Bluto's has a casual space and a very focused, limited menu. Not complaining though -- its nice to have that sometimes-- makes your choice easy. Their hummus was one of the best I've had. Also loved the beets & quinoa salad. Chicken souvlaki was good too. The only thing we didn't particularly like were the charred vegetables -- they were a little too smoky! They had to make us move to another table mid-meal just to accommodate a bigger group together. That wasn't an issue for us but they went out of their way to make up for it -- apologizing profusely and even offering free dessert (but we were too full to take up that offer). Best believe we got....not just one but TWO orders of the Greek fries here. Par for the course as I hit up this place with my ever so fry happy friend. We swung by around 5ish on a weekday and were able to grab a table pretty quickly. The interior is super cozy and I loved being able to see some of their cooking/fire in the dining area. You order at the front and then sit down. We ended up sharing a good amount of things including the hummus, the Greek fries x2, a salad, and souvlaki (meat for my friends, veggies for me). I will say that we both love fries to death so not surprising that we got two orders; I will say they were perfectly crispy with a great flavor and seasoning. Would eat again (though you'd find it hard to dissuade me from eating most fried potatoes l o l). The hummus was delicious and I enjoyed my vegetable souvlaki as well. Prices are super fair for the quality of food you receive and the experience. Parking in the area is street parking but fairly doable. I think this spot is a solid addition to the other Greek/Mediterranean offerings in Portland and fills that niche of being nice without being too pricey or fancy. My friend told me Bluto's was Greek food, but other reviews say "Greek-inspired" and someone else told me it's really more Greek-ish. It's a counter service restaurant where you order at the front and then seat yourselves but that does not take away from how amazing the food is. I finally made it to Bluto's, a spot I'd been wanting to try for a while. It had the feel of a true neighborhood gathering place--packed with locals who all seemed to know each other, adding to the warm and welcoming energy. I needed somewhere to hang out for about an hour. Since Bluto's is open 11am-10pm, I stopped in for a pre-dinner bite. I had a hard time deciding what to get but the staff made great recommendations. The restaurant serves "wood-fired" and "Greek-inspired" food. I would say about half the menu is vegetarian friendly which is more than I expected so that's nice! I got the spanakopita hand pie for $11 (absolutely delicious, ate the whole thing) and the charred snap peas and lentils for $10 (really tasty, took half home). I didn't get cocktails but they range from $10-13. Order at the counter, get a number, and they'll bring it out. They bus for you. The kitchen is mostly open. Had lunch at Bluto's yesterday with a friend. We both ordered a wedge salad, pita breads, and split an order of pickled vegetables and traditional hummus (total $46 before tip). We had both eaten at Bluto's many times and enjoyed it, and this was our first time back this year. The pita bread was fine. The salad dressing was less flavorful than I remembered, and bacon was dry and tasteless. The pickled vegetables were somewhat dry and missing that hint of cinnamon that made them so good. The hummus was nearly tasteless and what little flavor it had was slightly bitter. Very disappointing meal, overall. I do not plan to return. read more

This business overtly discriminates against those with disabilities. My service dog joins me everywhere - federal buildings, airplanes, work, the whole 9 yards. He assists me with a disability. This is normal. When I arrived here for a business lunch it was almost 90 degrees outside and I went inside to meet my colleagues, dog in tow, so as not to cook him alive in my vehicle. Reasonable, no? Immediately, Bluto himself (large, hairy, fat man with a dark beard - busboy?) stormed out of the back and told me that dogs weren't allowed, unless he is a service dog. I assured Bluto that "this is a service dog" and that I could show him proof if he'd like. Bluto insisted that he did not want to see any proof, but that the dog had to be wearing a vest in order to considered a service dog. Bluto assured me that this was state law - I assured him that it is not state law, to which he threw up his hands and suggested we sit outside. Even though it was an empty restaurant. Can't remember what I ate, because the food wasn't very good. Forgettable, literally. I do remember the sunburn I got outside, though, and the lack of attention our table received from the server while we were seated & eating. I do remember the server saying "not to worry about that guy" and that "he's just high strung when it's busy." So the restaurant considers themself busy at 30% capacity. To be clear, under federal law, specifically the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service dogs are not required to wear vests, ID tags, or any specific signage. - - - - - On the downside, this restaurant likely violated Title III of the ADA, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in the activities of places of public accommodations (like restaurants) as well as state-specific disability access laws, which often mirror or strengthen the ADA. We came specifically for their soft serve and it did not disappoint. The quality of the dairy used was noticeable. The pistachios with the chocolate shell was the perfect balance of flavors with the nuttiness and the sweetness of the soft serve. Very worth getting this sweet treat. They were super busy when we went on a Thursday at 6 and i was anticipating the line to move more quickly. They were a little slow in taking orders but the cashier was very attentive to each guest in chatting with them so that was nice. There wasn't much seating at that point for bigger parties so I would recommend going earlier. The food looked great to share and I would come back and try it. read more

There was a fried cheese thing that was super salty with fig and just fantastic. Lamb was tender and tasty & chicken had a tasty green sauce w/ it too and was very well marinated. However they were $9 each and it is one singular skewer and a small one at that. I would have to spend a lot to get filled up here. We also tried the beets n bulgar salad and a beer cocktail. I'm not even a beet guy or anything and def not a salad guy or a cocktail guy but both were excellent. Not your typical "hummus-pita-souvlaki" joint by any means. Exceptionally delicious versions of traditional fare that have a portland flare. such as mushroom hummus which I was initially skeptical of but would have regretted not ordering. The lamb skewer was so tender that I wish we'd ordered 2 instead sharing one but considering we orders half the menu it's best we didn't. The large white beans braised in tomatoes was divine. The pickle plate was the perfect accompaniment. And the cauliflower and lentils could easily be a meal in itself. I'm admittedly a sucker for soft serve ice cream so the fact that they offered that with gorgeous creative toppings had to happen. Despite being so full. You seat yourself after ordering. Tons of tables (inside and out) and a long window bar for window seating. They do bus the tables - but you serve yourself water and pull a number while you wait for food to be delivered to your table. Restaurant was very clean and well staffed. It took about 20-25 minutes for us to get food from when we ordered but everything came out fresh and tasting fantastic. We ordered tapas style and split between the two of us - a spiced lamb skewer, a sausage skewer, Greek fries to split, and a traditional hummus to share. The hummus does not come with bread - you need to buy pita bread separately. Pita is a little bigger than the size of your hand and cost $3 per pita. Food quality was great. This Greek inspired fusion restaurant knows how to show off it's best wares and bring innovation and technique into their kitchen. As much as I enjoyed the food, I do have my reasons why it's not a home run for me. I tried the hummus without the protein, it was fresh with herbs and olive oil, not sure if it was greek olive oil, didn't taste like it to me but still tasty. No pita bread with this order, pita is 3 bucks each (I blew through 2, for one hummus order) they're on the small side. I also tried the citrus chicory salad, a bit pricey but very good. I also tried the pickled veggies, these were great!. The service seemed stressed but were helpful. Wanted to try ice cream but ice cream maker was broken at the time.
