Avoid purchasing a boat through BoatMax! I trusted them when they said their mechanics did a full inspection and "all was in great shape" prior to purchasing, only to run into issues IMMEDIATELY after signing the paperwork (even before leaving the dock). $20,000 in repairs later, I feel completely taken scammed. For starters, I was lied to about the boat having a generator. I was told repeatedly there was a generator, and "what a great price this is considering it has a generator." Lo and behold, we find out 10 minutes after signing that there is not a generator. We thought "well, shame on us trusting them and not verifying ourselves", but decided to start the boat, cut our losses, and move on. Well, the boat wouldn't start. After an entire team of mechanics came down the boat and spent 45 minutes inspecting and trying to find an issue, they sloppily used a plastic bag to "repair" a leaking water issue and found that the battery had died. They recharged the battery, and told us that we won't have any more issues as the battery just needed to be jumpstarted after being out of the water for a while during the sale. 15 minutes later, an engine shuts down while on the water. An hour later, the second engine shuts down. We were sitting ducks in the middle of the Hudson. The boat would not start. We called BoatMax repeatedly during this entire fiasco and were essentially told that no issues were found during the inspection or bay test and that the boat is now ours. We finally got towed to our marina 6 hours later. We charged the battery overnight (thinking that maybe it just needed more charge), but everytime we have taken the boat out, even for 15 minutes, at least one engine fails. It has been a nightmare. I just paid thousands of dollars for the boat to undergo a thorough inspection and for all parts to be disabled and tested. It turns out that the boat has major engine failure to the point where it is completely UNSAFE to use and is prone to EXPLODING. I am now having to pay $7,500 to get it to the point where it is even safe to drive, and another $12,000 to fix additional issues that are not immediately crucial but are necessary within the next 12 months for the boat to continue operating. PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING A BOAT FROM BOATMAX!!! I bought a boat from Boatmax last year and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. We first saw the listing online and the pictures looked much better online than the boat actually looked in person. When we got to the brokerage the sales rep, Mike, told us that there was a generator in the boat and that the engine was redone in their in-house shop, and that all the electronics worked. We put in an offer, got the boat, and got the financing. When we did the bay test Mike went out with us and still told us there was a generator in the boat. He showed us around and told us that the engine had been redone. Everything started up great and ran smoothly. There were no problems at all and we were extremely impressed with the boat. When we came to pick up the boat. the boat on our closing day the boat was not in the water. When it was put in we could not get the boat to start so we called Mike. He came down and we thought it was odd that the generator wasn't working and he said he would have someone look at it, proving that he thought there was a generator. Then the worst thing happened - the mechanic that he sent down said that there never was a generator in the boat. We called Nathalie, the manager to complain. She said that our contract didn't specifically state that the boat came with a generator so there was no recourse. I wasn't sure what my rights were at that moment so I thought we should start it up and drive out. It got worse from there. The boat still would not start. All kinds of different mechanics started jumping into the engine room and working on the boat. No one spoke one word of English so no one could explain what was happening to us. Then someone stuck a PLASTIC bag in a hole at one point. Everything went wrong, but they said we had bought the boat and had to leave. They sent us out to sea with a boat. that barely worked. We broke down and had to call sea tow. $20,000 in damages later we are selling. BEWARE OF BOATMAX!! read more

If you love your boat STAY AWAY!! The owner is one of the nastiest, foulest, most indecent people on earth. The service manager is totally dishonest, understands only dollar signs and will soak you for everything you've got. The repair "service" itself is a joke, and the manager knows you're at his mercy with your boat in need of repair or maintenance. Best advice: do NOT have any service or winterization at this marina. Prices are triple and quadruple compared to those in other marinas. Oftentimes, work is charged but not done at all. Over the past several years every mechanic the marina hired has quit after being forced to claim work was done when it wasn't. The result: the service people currently employed are not certified or even properly trained (although the marina claims they are certified mechanics). Attached is a foto of a brand new engine installed in my boat at Minneford/Boatmax, after just three hours on the water. The alleged mechanics that worked on the installation had no clue and didn't hook things up correctly, allowing sea water to completely foul and seize the engine. Along with dozens of other boaters in recent years, I have left the marina -- despite its fine location right on the Sound. STAY AWAY!! read more

I bought my first Boat from Boatmax and the experience was wonderful. This was my first boat and they where very helpful as it pertained to my needs as a first time boater. I really enjoy the ambiance, the staff treats you with respect and the Marina security is very aware. As with any boat your going to need to repair things here and there and I'm grateful for the mechanical staff who will lend a hand at a moments notice. You know how sometimes you see a lot of red flags and you ignore them because you really want something? That's pretty much what happened to my husband and I at Boat Max. In May we stopped in to check out a sailboat that had been listed online. When we arrived we talked to the person responsible for sales. He was a large sloppy man who was was pretty much the quintessential sleazy salesperson. First Red Flag. After talking to him about the boat for approximately 5 minutes he discloses some pretty serious damage about the boat that wasn't listed online and presents it with a silver lining. Second Red Flag. While we are talking another worker goes into the bathroom behind sloppy man's desk and takes care of his business but it's so loud we can hear it. Some things can't be unheard. Not a red flag but seriously foul and inappropriate. We walk out to take a look at the boat and sloppy man doesn't join us to check things out. After viewing several boats we knew this was uncommon. But the boat was on the hard and he probably couldn't get up there. Third Red Flag. Now my husband and I are clearly IDIOTS. We put on offer on the boat. We still haven't heard back... it's been over a month. Fourth Red Flag. We had a friend call about a week later and ask about the boat. The sloppy man told them that insurance for the damage hadn't been approved. He told us it was approved. The sloppy man lied. Fifth Red Flag. I was always treated with respect and any issue with the boats handled swiftly. The great friendly attitude towards me and my friends ended up as a part-time employment situation, which I still enjoy. I don't know why I can't give ZERO (0) stars for this Marina. They are the most evil, vindictive, deceiving people on planet earth. They will steal equipment off of your boat before they deliver it to you. As a previous poster said, they do not have certified and qualified mechanics on site, yet they will not allow you to bring you own mechanics to work on your boat. Their storage and slip fees are also unreasonable. They are only in the business of ripping you off for everything you've got. Not to mention, one of the positive reviews here was written by someone that has a significant interest in this establishment. Don't be fooled by these people!! Well, I have been a customer of Boatmax and North Minneford Marina only 8 years...8 happy years of my life and life of my family. I purchased from Boatmax two sailboats and in both cases Bob/Robert helped me to make right decisions. In addition, he offered tremendous amount of support after the deal was closed, including becoming my sail instructor (at no cost!!!) and eventually becoming my very good friend. I guess Sarah is right in some of her observations, Bob is not one of those sales guys who will sugar coat the deal essentially forcing you into making a very serious decisions of your life - changing your life style and becoming a sailor. Well, Sarah, I'm sure he could also become your friend. I don't know all reasons to make Sarah feel uncomfortable at North Minneford Marina, sometimes we all happen to have one of those days. Sarah, I'm certain that you could also become a very happy customer of North Minneford had you chosen to do so. Why, just because I meet so many happy people every single time I get there. Stayed here for the winter and can't say I was thrilled. Went to get the boat launched and it was filthy as if it had never been wrapped at all. It was covered in dust from bottom sanding another boat nearby. Huge black exhaust stain on my brand new hull from another boat backed up to mine running. Big chip in the enamel on my brand new outboard from the forklift crashing into it during launch. Had an appointment for 10 am and got dropped off there only to find out they couldn't launch me until 2. It would be nice to find an English speaker but then again city island has become a step below an animal shelter. Won't be back. For the money, I would prefer a tiny bit of respect for my property. read more
