Fun hands on foodie experience at BobaxRamen in Dinkytown with various ramen styles to choose from and flavor profiles. Create your own ramen was a new experience and I appreciate how niche this business is. Everything is a self serve style but staff remain throughout to assist! I was a little bummed that toppings were limited to (5) ingredients though they range from quail eggs, bok choy, sliced beef, and even seafood. I opted for a Japanese ramen that was mild In flavor and added various veggies and for the broth option - went with the Kimchi broth that was so flavorful. The interior was clean with the blue accents throughout with various seating options. This could be a little hard to navigate with mobility concerns due to the nature of the business and the walk spaces being somewhat narrow. I'd give a 3/5 due to several machines being out of order, some veggies looking to be past their prime, the tea machine having empty choice options, and pricing feeling a bit elevated for what you get.

Look at that cheese! The most exciting part

The broth seemed light and flavorful at first, but it ended being pretty salty after eating few bites of the ramen and kind of difficult to finish. If it weren't as salty, I would like the ramen much more. As for the potato salad, I liked how creamy it was. It tasted like a western potato salad with an Asian twist. The service was great! We asked to sit at Izakaya Kazama because we also ordered food there and there was AC. The staff kindly brought our ramen over! I would come back and try a different ramen. Hopefully it won't be as salty.

There may be better but I haven't found it. I had the tonkatsu ramen which is my go to. The broth is rich, lots of meat and other goodies. A bowl will fill you up. The menu is still pretty much as it always has been. Service is minimal, you order and pay at the counter or via OR code at your table and they bring you your food when it's ready so you don't get everything simultaneously but this isn't fine dining. Ambience is used furniture but this is a ramen joint so no problem. My main complaint is that the temperature inside is too hot. It was a mild day outside but sweltering inside. Still the food is worth it.

I just got the Classic Tonkotsu Ramen this time and I can say it's the best ramen I've hard in the Twin Cities so far. Delicious, deep, flavorful broth. Great noodles and pork. I would have preferred no sesame seeds but there's nothing to critique on this ramen. Quick service, not crowded. I tried the ice cream machine for a cup on the way out. Not that great, and a little more eggy/custardy, but what can you expect from a vending machine. The mix-ins were fun. Will definitely be coming back.

They have no sea-food option either, and they only have one chicken ramen. Chicken wasn't properly grilled and it felt like I am eating raw chicken. The ramen noodles were also interesting in that they don't look like any of ramen noodles I had before. Broth is just pure MSG so I didn't even bother finishing the broth. Udon strips-fried was surprisingly very good. It was a bit oily but chicken in there was tasty. Good amount of bean sprouts and cabbages. They seem to have multiple options for udon stir-fried, so if you want a traditional ramen or even udon with broth, this is not the place for you.

The menu is limited. We got the Mapo tofu mazemen, which is this brothless ramen with a Mapo tofu blend, mushrooms, eggplant, tofu, and doubanjian blended together. I wish we could see some of the distinct ingredients alone besides the tofu as it was a bit too blended for me. I liked how unique this ramen was!! The chicken karaage basket had the most addicting trio of sauces - yuzu mayo, nori ranch; and honey mustard. The yuzu mayo was so light and citrusy, and I could practically drink the nori ranch. The fries were shoestring and perfectly crispy. The issue lies in the chicken karaage - it almost felt burnt, and it was quite dry inside. The chicken age gyoza were yummy. I did love the crispness and the tangy kamikaze dipping sauce! Service is efficient!

My group made sure to have a reservation anticipating that there would be lots of people and thank goodness we did. Those that went as walk ins had a wait time of 90+ minutes. When we arrived, we were promptly seated and ordered food right away as we knew what we wanted. We got an order of NHK (spicy chicken karage) and it was the perfect appetizer to gear us up for our entree. The Tonkotsu Ramen was so rich and fulfilling, the broth had an incredible umami flavor to it and the noodles had the perfect texture to it. The staff were all so friendly and attentive to what our needs were. I want to congratulate the staff at Zen Box Izakaya for an incredible 20 year run, we'll miss them greatly

As far as I remember, Eagan location has more booths, which gives more traditional Japanese vibes. My chicken ramen was solid. Chicken was nicely grilled but the broth tased just like MSG. The noodles doesn't look premium (feels like packaged ramen) but overall I liked it. The pork meal was okay! The rice was oily and not much taste to it. It's also hard to eat out of the bowl without a spoon, which they don't provide. Japanese fries are a must-try; it's large not too salty and the sauces are just phenomenal. Service was good but a little slow. It was dinner time on Friday, so they were probably very busy. We pressed the button two times but they didn't come. They automatically charged 18% gratuity fees so you don't have to tip them if you don't want to. Boba bar is right at the entrance!! The brown sugar was phenomenal. I got it with milk instead of milk tea, which makes the texture less creamy but I really liked it. Dragon tea just wasn't it and it tastes nothing like dragon fruit.
