I tried the tonkatsu ramen and thought it was decent. I liked the bounce of the ramen and pork, and the freshness of the ingredients. The broth seemed light and flavorful at first, but it ended being pretty salty after eating few bites of the ramen and kind of difficult to finish. If it weren't as salty, I would like the ramen much more. As for the potato salad, I liked how creamy it was. It tasted like a western potato salad with an Asian twist. The service was great! We asked to sit at Izakaya Kazama because we also ordered food there and there was AC. The staff kindly brought our ramen over! I would come back and try a different ramen. It's been awhile since I visited Ramen Kazama and I was in yesterday so it's time to update my review. They still have the best ramen I have tasted in the metro area. There may be better but I haven't found it. I had the tonkatsu ramen which is my go to. The broth is rich, lots of meat and other goodies. A bowl will fill you up. The menu is still pretty much as it always has been. Service is minimal, you order and pay at the counter or via OR code at your table and they bring you your food when it's ready so you don't get everything simultaneously but this isn't fine dining. Ambience is used furniture but this is a ramen joint so no problem. My main complaint is that the temperature inside is too hot. It was a mild day outside but sweltering inside. I initially walked into the Ramen joint on the corner, but it was packed! So I walked down and recalled seeing a burger marquee. I stepped inside, mulled over the menu for a bit, and discovered that there is also a Ramen menu. This made my night because it is absolutely soup weather, if there ever was such a thing. My second restaurant in the group of 3 on this corner, and I was impressed yet again! The tonkatsu ramen was the creamiest I've ever had. It was a pretty decent serving size. I got the small karage bowl, which was a good deal for a smaller dinner, coming with kimchi and rice. The chicken was really juicy and flavorful with the spicy mayo. It's set up in a seat yourself and order from a QR code method, which I don't mind. The servers didn't say a word to any customers the entire time, including when dropping off food and drinks, which was a little strange to us. An updated review, Ramen Kazama is still a solid and staple ramen shop in Minnesota. They have the usual regional ramen styles (tonkotsu, shio, shoyu, miso). I am definitely a ramen snob! So here goes. The air conditioning is not working well, so for summer in Minnesota that did not create a perfect ramen environment. The noodle is okay, cooked perfectly but nothing special. I have eaten many tsukemen before. This Tsukemen is too sweet for my taste and the consistency is more of a curry than a proper tsukemen. The tsukemen shops typically offer delicious dashi broth at the end of the meal. Add the dashi broth to your leftover dipping soup broth and enjoy the savory soup. This is called soup wari (スープ割り). This place don't seem to offer that. The meat does not have enough fat in it. It is a little on the dry side and no crispiness to it. The egg is okay. Ordered the Torishio Ramen with Karaage (fried chicken) and traditional Tonkotsu (pork). Pork was better than chicken. The fried chicken was delicious but the ramen base had a subtle almost bland flavoring for the Torishio. Tonkotsu was not bad but not the best I've had. Two sake options. The service was fine- it's order at the front then a server brings it out so there really wasn't much "service". The egg and chicken karage were the best part of the dish. I have loved this restaurant since it opened! But not after today's experience. I could not get anyone to take my order at the counter despite making eye contact. No problem, I can order at the table, but I didn't get to ask about the different sakes available (no description on the menu). My table had no utensils or napkins, and although I was brought napkins, I had to scout nearby tables for a spoon. No effort was made to restock the table. Both "Help Yourself" water jugs were out of water. The tables seemed clean, the windows were clean, but the floor was grimy, greasy and sticky - like walk-out-of-your-shoes sticky. There was *a lot* of chitchat between tall with glasses guy and shorter with long black hair lady. (No name tags) I get it, I've worked in restaurants, but why not take my order and maybe have the opportunity to up-sell? The food: Hot sake was not hot, the ramen was not hot, but otherwise okay. The servings seem smaller and the prices are higher, but that is everywhere. When I eat out, which is becoming more and more rare, I want good food, decent service and a clean environment for my money. Especially when customers can see right into the kitchen! Kazama-san is incredibly friendly, treats his staff well, and works amazingly hard to produce excellent, consistent quality in all of his dishes. He's always tinkering with new food ideas, and every little special is a treat! The atmosphere evokes a little slice of Japan, and the drummer/rock band themes throughout the restaurant are charming! I write this review 3 years after my summer in Minneapolis to rave about one dish that I'm not even sure is on their menu anymore. In summer 2018, I had tsukemen for the very first time at Ramen Kazama and I was in awe of the deep, complex, umami, rich flavor of the thick broth that clung onto the perfectly al dente noodles. I was in heaven throughout this entire meal. At the time, I wasn't sure if this ramen was particularly good or if it was just average ramen and I was shook by the novelty of dipping ramen. But I live in NYC now and I've tried my fair share of dipping ramens in the city - I mean it when I say every tsukemen I've had in NYC has paled in comparison to this ramen I had in Minneapolis. I've had Ichiran in Hong Kong, which pretty much ruined every other soup based ramen for me, and I would dare say that Ramen Kazama comes close to doing that to tsukemen for me. I saw in another review that the dipping ramen may have been discontinued from the menu (?) which is quite unfortunate, because I thought it was really awesome that there was such delicious, authentic ramen in the Midwest. read more

I got the vegetable curry ramen ($15). You can choose between regular wheat noodles or kale noodles. I tried both. The kale noodles are slightly more interesting than the wheat noodles. The broth here is more like a thick curry sauce and not as soupy as I'd hope. The dish tastes okay but also has a starchy texture that bored me after a while. If you want better vegan ramen, I recommend Tori 44 in North Minneapolis, but Ramen Kazama isn't bad by any means. read more
