It is small enough that you can pay a visit even if you don't have a lot of time. There is a number you can dial to follow along with a audio tour. The info is posted on the wall on the west side of the memorial. The audio tour is part of Oregon's Mt. Hood Heritage Trail series. It is # 9 in the series. Text "hood" to 57682 & followed the link to the mobile site. While I was there, and there was a man lovingly doing some repair work there. He clearly has devotion and dedication to this memorial. He was also kind enough to take a picture of me and my dog with Telnet statue with the three soldiers. Thank you veterans for your service and for all of those that are dedicated to caring for this memorial.

It reduces the experience to facts and figures and while a nice remembrance of those that have fought for their country, it doesn't really make as much of an impression on younger visitors who are far removed from the conflict. I've been intrigued by this particular memorial for years because you just can't miss it as you drive along Highway 99 at the southern end of Canby. A "Huey" medivac helicopter ("Little Orphan Annie") is on it's approach landing just alongside the road. This is the dramatic focal point of the Vietnam Era Veteran's Memorial which is dedicated to the men and women who served in the military (not just Vietnam) between 1959 - 1975. Across the plaza, which is shaped like a "shou" representing long life and longetivity, there is a Buddhist bell with the inscription, "Believe in Peace" in Vietnamese. Approaching the helicopter is the bronze statue, "A Hero's Prayer" which depicts three larger than life-size figures of an American soldier carrying a wounded comrade towards the helicopter while holding the hand of a small child. The statue depicts PFC Gary W. Martini, USMC, Oregon Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in action in Vietnam. The second figure is U.S. Army Spec-4 Warren E. Newton, a Canby soldier listed as Missing in Action in Vietnam. The memorial started taking shape in 2006 and is still well maintained. I particularly like that it focusing on the humanity as well as the heroism of the war experience. If you look down at the plaza, you will see the red cross making the landing spot for the incoming helicopter and bricks covered with names of those who have made the memorial possible.

Midway between Newberg and McMinnville, some call Dundee the heart of Oregon wine country. A charming town of about 3000, with a small "downtown" area on Highway 99, I often choose to use Dundee as my base when spending a few days in this region. It's also a perfect day trip if you just want to get out of the city. Home to Knudsen Vineyards, the pioneers of Oregon Wine Country, I love visiting their vineyards and tasting room. The vistas are just incredible! In fact, The Oregon Wine Country license plate is a pic of their rolling hills. Fun fact! For a more modern setting, I love Furioso. Inside is all white and minimalist with floor to ceiling windows allowing the vineyards to be the focus, and living art, in the tasting room. A French winemaker plus an Italian owner make fabulous wines. The Four Graces has that quaint, farmhouse vibe with many seating areas out in their patio and lean. Love starting my day here. Sokol Blosser is another vineyard with a gorgeous, modern aesthetic. Visit Domaine Roy & FiLs for an elegant Tuscany experience. Lange Family Estates, Durant, Firesteed, Dusky Goose, Argyle, Dobbes Family Estate - there are so many vineyards right in Dundee. For a small town, they have several great restaurants. For breakfast, lunch or make your own charcuteri, definitely stop at Red Hills Market. Their prepared sandwiches and meals are fantastic and don't break the bank. Their pantry items are from the best of Oregon's best and make great gifts. For an elegant dinner, go to Tina's. The food and service is impeccable. For a casual stop, find out where Los Kopitos Food Truck will be, they post on FB and Instagram. They move around and support various events. Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Dundee is a Charming town, a perfect day trip from Portland or a home base for a long weekend in the Willamette Valley. Definitely make a point to visit.

This community still has a small town feeling to it and once in a while you will see a tractor driving down the road even. Currently there is a small grocery store, post office, Café, tavern, hair salon, drive up coffee, veterinary clinic, automotive shop, gas station, well drilling business, a grange hall and a newer fire department not far down the road. This is where you can come to see acres and acres of Christmas trees and pick out the perfect one There is also hey Holly Farm or two . A fun place around Christmas time. Lots of acreage and farmland. A beautiful drive beautiful drive out this way with the backdrop of Mount Hood. 2015-60

This area is called the Clarkes-Highland area. Clarkes Four Corners is a dedication to the Clarkes pioneers and settlers that came here. There is a general store, school, grange, church and pioneer cemetery in short proximity to the intersection.
