I would suggest getting there early to choose a spot. Some campsites are A LOT better than others. It gets very windy at night, so this means it will also be cold. Campfires do not last long because of the wind. As of June 2013, Firewood onsite was $7 for a bundle, $13 for two bundles and $19 for three. The bathrooms are nice and clean with hot water and hot showers. The beach is close albeit cold and windy. As with a lot of Pacific coast beaches, water is very cold. read more

Went with a group of four famlies with 9 kids total and stayed in sites 5 and 7 this month. Based on the yelp reviews I thought we would see skunks gauranteed. We never saw one during our two night stay. The wind was as advertised :). A friends tent blew away twice so this may be a site to avoid. It was cold at night as expected. I loved the proximity to great beaches along highway 1 and waking up to a seal barking Sunday morning. Bring cash. I had to drive back into town to hit up an atm for the $8 per night vehicle fee. read more

Campground is awesome, in a great setting. Great location and lots of space. Campground host is really rude though. Went there to scope out some spots on a day trip. In bodega for the day and wanted information about future camping. He was not helpful, looked at me and my 11 year old son like we were asking to much ( I had 3 questions). Barely got a map out of him. Then went to Wright's beach and got all the information I was wanting to know. Of your job is working with the public, then learn to be a little more friendly. If your old and grumpy then retire. Would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn't for him. Love the ocean. read more

Not wilderness camping but decent place for car camping with your family with clean free showers. Skunks did make several appearences but I did not smell any spays. Most of the sites have privacy but sound carries well so don't expect total silence. Camp grounds are next to trails leading up into the dunes. Also included in your entrance fee is access to South Salmon Creek beach which has nice sand and big waves. It is a short drive from the campgrounds. The wooden stairs are broken and closed so it is a short hike up and over top of the sand dune to beach. read more

Long review incoming- as all the other reviews state, this campground is first come, first serve. Which can be a deal breaker for some. I just arrived back home from my two night stay here with one other friend. In my opinion this doesn't seem like the kind of campground you should bring a large group to stay at. It seemed most of the sites were quite small, best for one person or trailer camping. This was a great place for my friend and I. We arrived at around 11:15 and were told by the camp host to drive around and pick about three different sites that we liked and that the ranger would be at the kiosk at 12pm to check us in. So we drove for about 10 minutes and picked our top three. We decided to just park and wait in our favorite spot until it got closer to 12pm. We wanted to get out and stretch and get some fresh air since we drove for over three hours. It's about 11:30 now and an older man approached our car a bit confused and asked if we were camping at this spot. We said no and he said that his wife just reserved this spot. So we apologized and moved out and we were really confused. We drove back to the kiosk and of course at 11:30 the ranger was there taking people in. We were pretty upset because we got our hopes up for this spot as it was everything we were looking for. I'm sure it would've just been smarter for us to park at the small parking lot that is right next to the kiosk and wait for the ranger, but we didn't think they would let people check in before 12pm. I think if you're a first come first serve campground you shouldn't really be accepting people before the specific time given for check in. We wouldn't have mind waiting around until it was time. I don't think that's very fair, but we dusted it off and picked our other choices and decided to make the best of the situation. You're not directly on the beach but there is beach access very close by. Follow the signs near the small parking lot at the front and you drive up a short, windy road to another parking lot where there is a great balcony you can view the ocean at or walk down the railing to the beach. I don't recommend walking it, unless you want to go for a very long stroll. We were unsure about water access or dish washing. This campground has trash cans, recycling receptacles, and water spouts at every other site. There's also a small dish washing station at every restroom. It's a small sink outside of the bathrooms. The restrooms are extremely clean. Only one complaint about the bathrooms is that there isn't any hand soap available. All there was to use was a gross, tiny piece of a mystery bar of soap. So my suggestion would be to bring a small thing of hand soap into the bathroom with you as well as a small hand towel to dry your hands off with because paper towel or hand dryers aren't available either. The showers were amazing for camp showers! Bring cash/small bills with you when you come here! They have a token machine out front of the bathrooms. $1 gives you a 4 minute shower. A token is .50 each and is worth 2 minutes. 4 minutes was just enough time to wash my hair and body. If you require shaving or any other hygiene maintenance I'd recommend paying for more tokens. The water pressure was great and the temperature adjusts extremely quick so you don't have to waste your tokens time waiting for water to heat up. The showers were also very clean, but bring shower flip flops. They're located at the back of the restrooms and are like tiny single closets that offer a little extra spot to the side of the shower head to store your belongings and hang up your towels. One complaint I have about our campsite was the sand. Some sites had sand, others didn't. So I'd say come prepared if you have to walk around in the squishy sand, at times it was hard to maneuver around. I wouldn't walk around barefoot. Our site's sand had pieces of wood and rocks in it. We also had pesky birds and one single bee that wouldn't stop bothering us, but that's obviously not the campground's fault. Just our location choice. As for wild animals, we saw so many. We saw two deer passing through the back of our site (so cute). Also a family of wild turkeys that we saw pass through twice. We didn't see any skunks, but the first morning we woke up we did see muddy footprints on our table and some strange patterns in our sand so I'm not sure if there are snakes or not. You can purchase firewood at the available camp host sites. There are a few throughout the campground and sometimes one might be off duty, but the other one is. We only had an interaction with one camp host and she was very nice. Bundles are $8 or 3 for $20. We purchased three and it was the perfect amount for us for two nights, we even had two logs left over that we left at the campsite for our neighbors to snatch up if they wanted it. Overall, the camp was very nice. Everyone, including those staying, were extremely friendly and considerate. We slept so good because it was so quiet and peaceful. read more

I LOVED this campsite. However I'm pretty sure that was mostly because we went there in October and no one else was there. The weather was really nice too. Just had to bundle up at night. We had the whole beach to ourselves and the park rangers were really nice. We were able to drink, play guitar, and have a blast. Makes me wanna go back right now just thinking of it. read more

We were just out at Bodega Dunes for 6 days. We had beautiful sun and LOTS of fog and towards the end of our stay - falling fog. It's perfect and what you would expect at the coast. We were in the back of the 50-98 section - it was QUIET for the first part - louder near the weekend but the rangers are quick to quiet people after 10 pm. It's a GREAT place to camp with kids - especially little ones (ours is 3) who are content to play with sand toys and run up and down the dunes. There are skunks - they're pretty passive but they sneak up on you so you end up playing "what's that sound?!" all night long. We had a family of racoons too. Tons of birds in the day time and some nights we heard the hawks or owls doing their calls - it was very cool. We were there last year in August too - didn't see the sun once last year so we feel fortunate to have blue skies a couple of days this time. All of the beaches are a pretty close drive up the coast - nice central location. read more

I LOVE this place!!! I've been a few times and it is by far the best place to camp. Kid friendly!!!! It has private spots(I love that) and open areas for those who like to mingle or camp with groups. I really liked this place. It was a clean and spacious campsite. We went at the end of August during the week so not sure what the weekends are like here. We had 104 degree temps inland but it was just perfect for a full moon campout on the coast. The only problem I had was the dang foghorn. It goes off every 5 seconds and goes all night long. read more

Good campground. Not the best, but certainly not the worst. It is usually foggy and chilly, but it is cool. Lots of things near by and the beach is great....not really a beach you would swim in, but cool just to hang around. Gets really crowded so make sure you make your reservations early. Close to Jenner which is a prime fish local. read more

This place was awesome! Our only complaint was that it was a little chilly at night. The campsite was great. We were right next to a big sand dune which kept out the wind and gave us some privacy. The campground was pretty quiet all night, despite there being a big group of boy scouts there. The host was very helpful in getting us registered and set up with firewood. Also, if you go, check out Captain Davey's Ice Cream & Espresso on Hwy 1 in Bodega Bay. The coffee was amazing after a cold night in a tent and Davey was very helpful in giving us some ideas of what to see in Bodega Bay. read more

We have enjoyed years of camping during both the summer and fall @ Bodega Dunes. Easy to make reservations online, great park personnel, with both clean camp sites and restrooms. The past 3-4 years we have had the same unpleasant experience when deals with one employee name Dave @ the main gate. Dave is difficult to communicate with and seems to have an attitude toward people. Dave should not work with the public. We try to avoid having to interact with him. I plan to write the Salmon Creek Ranger Station regarding our recent stay. We hope this is our last encounter with negative park employee. read more

We camped at Wright's Beach campground 6 miles north of Bodega Dunes, but we came to Bodega Dunes twice during our trip to use the showers, which Wright's Beachers can use for free with no entry fee. We drove through the whole campground and went to the beach just to see what it was like. The entry road to the camp and the road to the beach are beautiful; there is nothing like that at Wright's Beach. Most of the campground is set far back from the main road, so there is no road noise except for some of the sights at the southern end of the campground which border Bay Flat Road. Wright's Beach, on the other hand, is at the bottom of a cliff beneath Route 1, and we did hear some road noise from our campsite, which was annoying when motorcycles or trucks passed, although I think the campsites right on the dunes did not hear road noise. However, Bodega Dunes is much closer to the main town than Wright's Beach, which is rather isolated in comparison. As far as the camp sites themselves, most of them at Bodega Dunes are fairly spacious and you won't be right on top of your neighbors, although you may hear them a little. Each site has a fire pit with a grill grate, a wooden food locker (bring a padlock to secure it), and a paved parking space. Some of the sites are all sandy dunes, while some are a little more woodsy. Most of them have some shade, although we saw some that had no shade at all, which would have sucked, as it was quite hot when we were there, and you would be boiling if your tent was on the sand with no shade. We liked the loop for sites 1-22 the best; it seemed quiet, the sites were well spaced, it was pretty and woodsy and more interesting looking than the other camping loops, most all of the sites on the outside of the loop had good shade, and the toilet and free shower facilities were very clean and nice, although you should definitely bring flip-flops for the shower. If we were to go back, we would reserve site # 15, which was in the woods with no sand and directly across from the very nice toilet/shower facilities but not so close as to hear people constantly. The camp sites at Wright's Beach were similar to Bodega Dunes, but they were much smaller and more packed together. You will definitely hear your neighbors there; in fact, you could probably hear every word they say, if they are loud talkers, although most of our neighbors were pretty polite and quiet. We had site # 22, which had good shade, and we liked it, except that it was almost entirely paved, so we could only stake down our tent in the rear, and thank goodness we had an air mattress so we didn't have to sleep on top of asphalt. It would've been a better spot for an RV instead of a tent, but we liked it overall. We saw a fox, there were lots of birds who were fairly vocal in the morning, and there were field mice, but they didn't try to get into the tent, and we kept our food locked up away from them. If we went back to Wright's Beach, we would reserve site # 4 or # 10, both of which have good shade, but are also right on the dunes facing the ocean. Those spots are hard to come by though unless you plan far in advance. The toilets were not as nice at Wright's Beach as at Bodega Dunes, although the rangers did a good job trying to keep them as clean as possible considering the number of people using the same, five stalls, and there were no showers there. Also, people kept inexplicably smoking in the bathrooms; maybe it was kids hiding from their parents. However, we thought the beach at Wright's Beach pretty much blows away the beach at Bodega Dunes. The Bodega Dunes beach is wide, flat, fairly boring, and there is nothing around except some driftwood washed up on shore. The beach at Wright's Beach, on the other hand, is incredible - a mile wide with dramatic cliffs, lots of interesting rock formations out in the water, big waves, hidden coves, amazing sunsets, lots of seagulls, we even saw a sea lion or two swimming around. Wright's Beach also has a nice picnic area, and the Kortum hiking trail that runs north all the way to Goat Rock through beautiful countryside starts right from the upper parking lot. If we come again, I still think we would stay at Wright's Beach if we could get spot # 4 or # 10. If not, # 15 at Bodega Dunes would be my second choice. Either way, bring warm clothes and lots of blankets to sleep under at night. While it was pretty hot and sunny when we were there, it is more often foggy, windy, and overcast, and I think it's almost always very cool at night. It was 75-85 F during the day when we were there, but it was in the high 40's or low 50's at night. read more

I was worried because we were coming into town so late that we wouldn't be able to find a place to camp, but it has a kiosk where you can drop money in a slot to pay, so you can arrive as late as you need. They have like 100 spots and it's $35 to camp overnight. Campsites are nice and the bathrooms are clean. The town is really cute, right on the coast, and everyone is super friendly. I would recommend this spot to anyone! read more

Shady, windy and cold. Most of the sites are covered with trees so you can't get any warm sun. We went in early June. The trails weren't kept up so we got lost on the way to the beach trail, we had to turn around. The trail to the beach is mostly in low brush and sand. Not recommended for seniors or young ones. read more

Stayed there this past weekend and had a great time. Its super close to Bodega Bay if you're going to do any fishing etc, and the campground was really nice with what looked like most sites having ample room and spacing, nearby trails and beach access, and the staff was nice too. Just be aware there are Racoons (cute) and skunks (a little scary until I found out they're very tame and supposedly have never sprayed anyone according to some regulars & my interaction with them) roaming around so put away your stuff before going to sleep. read more

Came here in December 2012. No one was tending the gate at 2 p.m. in the afternoon. Found only a CLOSED sign with no explanation. Tried again November 2013, 3:15 p.m. in the afternoon. No one at the gate, no explanation. Not sure what they are using my tax dollars for? Unless you are looking for a CLOSED sign with no service and no explanation, I would not recommemd going here. read more
