Dinner our first night in Barcelona was down narrow, winding, sparsely trafficked (compared to the rest of the area) streets at the southern end of the Gothic Quarter. Bodega Vasconia opened in 1905, making it 113 years old. The menu features many typical tapas dishes, but also highlight their paella, which is of course made to order and takes 20 minutes to prepare. We began our meal as we began many others this week, with glasses of sangria. It was good but tasted slightly watered down upon arrival. I think it was one of my less favorite sangrias of the week (and we had TONS). Patatas bravas has been one of my favorite tapas dishes long before ever stepping foot on Spanish soil. The patatas here were served piping hot, and drizzled with a bit of spicy bravas sauce plus a douse of alioli. These were a tad salty, but hit the spot. We also tried the gambas al ajillo, or spicy Spanish style garlic prawns. The shrimps themselves were tiny, not deveined, and underseasoned, but the butter was a bit spicy and good for dipping. It wasn't bad, but could have used salt in my opinion. The bit of excess salt in the patatas kind of balanced the lack of salt in the shrimp, although that certainly wasn't the intention. Although regionally speaking, paella is not a dominant culinary force in Barcelona, it was a specialty of the house so we had to try it. Overall it was very good, although there was a bit of grit in a clam or two. The prawns were large, sweet, and tender. We could tell they were excellent quality. Some of the rice at the edges tasted borderline undercooked, and had just a little too much bite in my opinion, but the overall flavor and execution was satisfactory. Additionally, the staff was nice, friendly, and helpful. The restaurant only seats 6 tables, so there could be a long wait at busy times (we arrived on the early side by Barcelona standards for dinner and had to wait at the bar for about 15-20 minutes or so), however it's in the less touristy part of the Gothic District so more effort to get there than other restaurants.

I came across this hole-in-the-wall restaurant while I was walking back to my hostel, and I had to stop by after reading that they offered oxtail at only around €10. Bodega Vasconia was founded in 1905, so they've been doing something right. When I got there in the early afternoon, I was the only non-Spanish speaking person in the restaurant. Service was excellent. The waiters frequently conversed over the counter with the customers, and they also checked in on me about how I enjoyed my food. This was my first time trying oxtail, and it was so delicious. Oxtail goes back all the way to Roman times. It's often slow-cooked so the meat is fall-off-the-bone tender with hints of garlic and red wine. Be sure to use the free bread to soak up the remaining gravy once you're done.

We started with Clara( beer with lemon soda), great summer refreshing, after that we had a glass of house rioja. Amazing tapas like, pulpo a lá gallega, (octopus)almejas ( clams), navajas a lá plancha(razor clam), anchovas cantabrico ( anchovies). All delicious!

    Seafood paella

Why we went here: good ratings on google (4.5), TripAdvisor and ok rating at yelp What we ordered: Sepia grilled (13€) and paella for two (26€). No drinks What was good: sepia was ok, service was nice Why my bad rating: the paella was very disappointing. It was completely undercooked and almost raw. I don't mind chewy rice but this was simple not ready. The amount of fish was also pretty low and end up eating only rice almost (4 tiny shrimps, 4 mussels, some squids. That's it).

This was our first stop on a food and wine tour of barcelona. Even though our interaction with the staff was very short because our tour guide did most of the talking, the staff was very friendly. We got some bread with topped with tomato and jam on. So simple, but it hit the spot. Mostly because I was starving and the jam on was fresh. This is such a cute little spot and very casual. The ambience is casual, chatty (?)...why I'm trying to say is that it's not one of those bars where you can't see or hear the person sitting across from you.

In summary: food here is overrated. Tried the paella which was undercooked so much so that we could hear the rice under our teeth. It consisted of mostly rice and barely any seafood. There was not a single mussel or shrimp in it. This was the most disappointing paella I've ever had. Staff were very friendly and attentive.

Best Tapas in Spain! We had their Oxtail, buttered cod with sauce , potatas bravas, anchovies, calamari and Iberian ham. Owner even gave us chupitos (digestive shots) on the house! Located in the alleys of the gothic quarter creates An authentic feel and ambiance.

The fact that even after a decade, it's rare that I go back to the same spot let alone they're still around after all these years. You already know that tells a lot and I feel bad for those who didn't have the same great experience, hope they give it another shot. See y'all soon! Salut, Vermouth!

The highlights for us were the Bacalao -- so tender and full of flavor -- and honestly the best octopus I've ever had in my life. We also loved the soft steak with duck liver served on a slice of French baguette, the shrimp skewers, patatas, and the Spanish ham with tomato toasts. Every dish was unforgettable. On top of the incredible food, the restaurant itself has such an elegant atmosphere with beautiful décor that made the whole dining experience even more special. The service was excellent, our server spoke English and knew so much about American pop culture. He even sang NSYNC songs to us while serving us dishes. As for the food let's get into it: - Lobster Croquettes (8/10) We've had a lot of croquettes this trip, but these were on another level, get one per person. - Paella (7.5/10) Different style of paella from other places we went. It was almost like a paella curry, which was still rich and delicious. - Squid Sandwich (10/10) This is hands down the best appetizer I've ever had. The squid was packed with flavor and the mayo sauce they used paired perfectly. Order one per person, and be prepared to order another to go. - Garlic Shrimp (8/10) Solid entree paired with sourdough bread. Dip that bread into the sauce and you'll be satisfied. - Aged Beef Steak w/ Foie Gras (9/10) This might be one of the best steak dishes I've had traveling abroad. It was cooked perfectly, and came with a potato crust on the bottom and Foie Gras on top. Definitely a must order. Overall a great experience, from the service and ambiance to the quality of the food, this is a must try when visiting Barcelona. Would I go again? Absolutely!

Cañete was booked out for 2 weeks straight, so we decided to risk it and see if we could get a spot as walk-ins; and were lucky enough to want less than 5 minutes before being sat at the "bar" in front of the open kitchen, which is honestly the best seat in the house IMHO. You get to see all the 'action' and interact with the friendly and often funny staff. Everything in the menu we tried was fantastic, but a few standouts for me were the squid sandwich (do yourself a favor and try it, even if you aren't a "squid person" the bread is fresh, and the butter garlic sauce they use should be sold in bottles at the supermarket), the lobster croquet was refreshing, and the aged beef steak with foie and truffle sauce was delicious and cooked to perfection.
