So here's the sweet sweat deets on Yogashelter. I went in to try out a complimentary beginners…read morebalance yoga class. The class instructor Marni Stone was informative, knowledgeable and positive which added to the overall experience. I had never been to a yoga class but once I found out that they offer a free 'Yoga 101' class once a month I figured it was worth a try. When you arrive you are greeted and given the lay of the land. They have a book section, chairs and comfy bed to entertain yourself before or after yoga sessions. Just a little ways down are cubby holes to put away your stuff, then grab your loaner mat (they have them there in case you don't wish to invest in your own one at first). The class comprised of 11 students whose experience ranged from none (me) to 50+ classes. We went around the room and introduced ourselves and stated what we had hoped to get out of the session. The things that the teacher advised we would get out of yoga would be mindfulness, focus, better breathing ability and awareness to the present moment. The class lasted about an hour and included a range of positions. I found it challenging but achievable and at the end I felt more energized than depleted (which is what I tend to feel after an hour in the gym). I stayed behind to talk to Marni in more detail about the benefits of yoga and sign up for a promotion they have going 30 days of classes for $29 including one free trial for aerial yoga at the Grosse Pointe location that I'm hoping I can get to by day 30.

I liked their one-time first-time promotion prices as well. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. This might just be a pet peeve of mind, admittedly, but the instructors clearly have favorites and the favorites, like the instructors, are all beautiful, young, white people. (I'm white, but it still bothers me.) Besides the cliquish vibe I got from before the class started to its final minutes, there is also no accommodation for folks at different levels. I'm at about a medium, but even for me, the instructor didn't make any offers/suggestions of adjustments for moves that were waaaaaayyyy out of my league. For some of the students who weren't as capable as me, well, it was difficult to watch these poor souls struggle without the teacher making any attempt to offer adjusted poses, offer encouragement, etc. After the first-time limited-time (short term) offer, the prices are not competitive at all. It's also inside a shoppig mall - maybe just me, but kind of weird/off putting for a practice that is meant to be a spiritual retreat as well as a physical workout.

But, I had purchased a 5 pack of classes and the last class expires tomorrow, so I had to use it. The schedule at this location had the class and time that I wanted, so since it's Easter Sunday, I decided to trek out here and get my Yoga on. The studio's in a strip mall just like their Troy location, at the corner of 12 mile and Orchard Lake Road. The lobby area's well taken care of full of product for sale. Yoga mats, towels, and a few sweatshirts are there for purchase. The lobby usually opens 30 minutes prior to class starting so everyone can get checked in and set up in class with their mats. If you don't have a mat, they will rent you one for a few dollars. They also have towels as well, but I think they charge for those too. I've forgotten my mat at home before and had to rent one, just make sure you return it to the counter. The bathrooms here are fabulous, and there's tons of space and cubbies for putting your items away while you're doing yoga. The showers are great just be prepared to dress in front of other people. They also have cubbies up front, which are the ones I use when placing my shoes and keys away before class. Remember kids, no cell phones are allowed in the yoga studio during class. Also, no shoes past the lobby area! As for pricing, they are not cheap but not the most expensive I've seen either. They have a variety of different packages available for purchase. You can purchase classes in a bundle (10 classes, 5 classes, etc.) or you can get a monthly membership. They also usually have new student discounts so check online and with the staff. They also have a drop in fee if you just want to do one class to check it out or get a yoga class in for fun. *most* of the instructors here are good. Over the years I've had a few that were NOT good, unfriendly or just unhelpful. But, most are good at leading class and get to know you by name. Make sure to bring water, a mat, a towel and get ready to do some Yoga!

It was such a wonderful experience. The instructor was so sweet and kind, we really explained everything position very well and made us feel very comfortable. They offer a wide range of services and different yoga levels too. Thank you for a wonderful time. They also have a little cute gift shop with rocks, oils, bracelets, bags and other different accessories. Definitely well worth the price of what we paid for a group get together for the Canton Women's group. I will definitely be back soon.

Fast forward a few weeks later and I took advantage of the new student special for $69. It included unlimited yoga and salt options. I've enjoyed Yin so far and will try the salt bed soon. The yoga is held in a halo therapy room with salt added in the room. There are some health benefits noted, but I signed up to find a yoga studio that felt comfortable to practice in. I did notice my airways opened after the first class. There was also tea and coco waiting outside the room. Looking forward to trying more classes and I plan to join after the month is over. I've had a good experience so far, the owners are welcoming and the students practicing as well.

I…read morestarted coming here as a chance to relax after work a few times a week, I attended eight classes all together mainly on Monday's and Friday's for the basic yoga from 6-7pm during the entry unlimited monthly package. I REALLY wanted to like this studio but there were just too many little annoyances that I just couldn't overlook with a price tag of $97/mo. Cons: 1. People walk into the yoga room talking and caring on with their friends until class starts. I got to class early, like the website requests, to set up and relax before the start of class but found it impossible with people talking and dropping their mats on the ground in compleat disregard of other people around. 2. The Sun Room where they hold a separate class at the same time as the basic yoga class on Monday's is connected to the main yoga room which means all people attending that class have to walk through the main room. The rooms are not soundproof at all which means you can hear everything going on in the other class. 3. The entire studio is not soundproof which not only means you can hear the other class but also the traffic outside and people sitting in the waiting room while you are trying to practice. 4. The studio is FREEZING! Holly K. mentioned this in her review and I have to agree. My feet are ice cubes the entire class which doesn't make for a relaxing environment. 5. The building is nothing special and neither is the studio. It consists of a fabricated wood floor, drop ceiling, speakers, and fake candles. Some people might like the bare minimum feel but for $97/mo I expect a little bit more. 6. I understand most people don't get off work until 5pm but it would be nice if they offered a class at 5pm for people who go into the office earlier and therefore leave earlier. I find myself sitting in the parking lot waiting for class to start. Although, most yoga studios have the same schedule. Pros: 1. The studio is conveniently located off 275. 2. The classes are small. 3. Gary is an amazing teacher! He is funny, knowledgeable, great at relaxing his students, and melting away the day's worries. 4. You can cancel (not renew) your membership at any time without penalty, I think? Overall, I really did enjoy my time here doing yoga. The people that work here are great and hardworking and I honestly hope they continue to generate business. Just wasn't the place for me.

Inflexible Policies That Prioritize Revenue Over Members…read more I am an unlimited member at Club Pilates Novi and I deeply regret joining. The policies here are anything but customer-friendly, and I want others to think twice before signing up. One of the most frustrating aspects is that none of these policies are clearly disclosed at the time of sign-up. You only discover them later -- often when it is too late and you are already locked into a membership. This lack of transparency at the outset is, in my opinion, the biggest red flag of all. To start with what you will eventually find out: classes fill up so quickly that unless you book at least a week in advance, you end up on a waitlist -- which defeats the purpose of being an unlimited member. On top of that, if you need to cancel within 24 hours, they charge you a $15 fee with no exceptions. My biggest frustration, however, stems from what happened after I suffered a shoulder injury. I placed my account on hold while I recovered. Just two days later, I gave my 30-day cancellation notice, only to be told that members cannot submit a cancellation notice while their account is on hold. This policy makes absolutely no sense. Because of this rule, I was forced to pay an additional ~$250 before I was even allowed to cancel my membership. To make matters worse, the studio claimed they had sent me an email about this policy -- but they had the wrong email address on file, so I never received it. Being held responsible for a communication that was never delivered to me is completely unacceptable. I understand that businesses need policies, but these rules feel designed to trap members and collect fees rather than support them. Had any of this been communicated upfront, I would never have signed up. Please do your research and ask detailed questions before committing to a membership here.

It is spotless and big. Lots of room for the various classes offered, and there are plenty! A number of teachers have been there for many years and I believe that speaks to the business practices. I have been going here on and off (due to costs) for the last 5 years or so, and it really is a great place. I do recommend Mid American Fitness and while I know running a business is complicated, hopefully there's a way to make prices a bit more accessible for less affluent folks.
