I tend to buy most of my 3 yr old's dance gear online. I've found adorable leotards on amazon and even better ones at zulily, although if you go that route I suggest ordering a size bigger since you'll be waiting months for it. Up until now I"ve also been buying my daughter's ballet shoes online, but since I just signed her up for a *real* dance studio* I thought maybe I should make sure the ballet shoes fit. And that's how we found ourselves at Body & Sole. My little one was fitted for ballet shoes and immediately found her way to their bar where she demonstrated some very awkward looking dance poses that made me think this ballet thing may be short lived. I wasn't planning to buy any leotards here, but couldn't resist buying her yet another sparkly pink ballet dress. It was more expensive than I've found online yet less expensive than what I've seen in actual dance studios in the past. My daughter was also quite excited about the ballet outfits they sell for american girl dolls here. The two women who helped me were very helpful and even had a binder of requested attire from all the dance studios in the area. Fortunately, 3 1/2 year olds can wear whatever they want so the sparkly pink ballet dress will get lots of use. Body & Sole dance really went above and beyond to help us feel comfortable from a covid perspective while still being able to get my son the tap shoes he needed. We are still not going into stores these days and the owner worked with us to find a way that my son could try on the shoes without having to come into the store. The owner was extremely helpful and worked with us to make sure that the shoes fit correctly. Highly recommend. read more

What I like is that they have a very good selection of leotards, so you almost always can find what you're looking for. It's nice to be able to try on different styles and sizes. Having said that, it's up to twice the price you'll find online. Still, I take my daughter here maybe once a year to buy a few things we need and usually a few we don't. The service is variable. If you come by around noon, they're hanging out eating lunch at the counter. They may or may not offer much assistance depending on the day. Overall, convenient location, good selection so that you can try on things, and expensive. read more

Love this place! After finding Body & Sole I never went back to some of the other stores I've shopped in for dance clothing and shoes. They sell a huge range of dance clothing and shoes anywhere from ballet, tap, jazz, and character shoes to tights, leotards, and stretch pants. They also sell clothing for gymnastics and ice skating. All of the sales associates are knowledgeable about the store's products, and especially when it comes to being fit for pointe shoes it's really important to have someone who knows what he or she is doing. I got my first pair of pointe shoes there and was able to find a pair fairly easily after trying on several pairs. Plus, everyone there is super friendly, willing to answer questions, and you always get one on one special treatment. It feels like you're visiting close friends whenever you go, and most likely you'll always leave with something. Prices are decent...leotards and pointe shoes are never cheap but everything is fairly reasonable. Definitely go here for anything related to dance! read more

I shopped here years ago and every time I went here, the employees were horrible! Not only were they older ladies, they were rude, rushed me in and out of the store. One time I called because I was in need of last minute shoes, and the lady told me "better hurry I will be leaving soon because we are slow" as an employee, who says that? So I saw it was under new ownership. I got excited. Finally I don't have to order online anymore. Wow, will I never give this store another chance! The set up is amazingly cute. New ownership, new look to the store, must mean new employees! I was excited. This time the employee was young, very cute and RUDE. She gave me attitude, she was very direct, she did not help me find what I was looking for, plus everything is overpriced! You can get these things online for HALF the price. I wish I got this young ladies name so I can put it in the review, but I was too upset. You would think new ownership means new customer service training, but it is only getting worse. Too bad they don't offer 0 star ratings, because at this point this is what this store deserves. Cute and welcoming on the outside, nasty and mean on the inside. read more

This is my go-to place for dance and theatre stuff. I have school age kids who need specific items for classes, shows, recitals, etc. The big positives here are: wide selection of good quality merchandise, a VERY knowledgable sales associates who know what is the best brand based on age, size, activity, and the fact that you can touch and try everything on right there. In my experience, finding the right sizes for these things is really hard, and online sales mean you end up returning things three times unless you know the exact brand and size you need. The only downsides are that the hours are not that convenient, and it is a little pricey, but to be fair, I would say that when I compare this to trying to buy online, you still come out ahead buying from this store where you can make sure it fits right, is not too see-through, uncomfortable, etc. read more

I visited Body and Sole in Winnetka some years ago, and when I asked about what size tights to buy and was helpfully told :"with thighs as big as yours, at least a medium," I decided not to return. However, recently I needed ballet shoes in a hurry, and Body and Sole was the only nearby dance wear store. However, when I inquired about the fit of a couple of pairs of ballet shoes, the salesperson on duty helpfully reminded me that since I certainly wasn't a professional dancer, the fit didn't really matter so much. I am a middle-aged adult, so I can simply write such people off as rude and take my business elsewhere, but parents of young girls or teens with any body insecurities or professional dance aspirations might think twice about subjecting their impressionable young dancers to the possibility of similar treatment. read more

I so appreciated the time that two different employees spent with me during two different visits, to fit me with character shoes I could actually walk in. I'm difficult to fit and detest any shoes without thick cushions on the sole. I ended up spending about $43 for a pair that fits my orthotics and is so comfortable that I may return to wearing shorter skirts and hose on special occasions, just because I can.
