Went in to buy some gifts/activities for a friend children. Told the owner i was looking to buy a couple items for each child. And as the owner was "helping me" (so pushy) she basically yelled at me when I told her some items were probably too difficult for the children I was buying for because my own children are not interested in them. She told me donate it all and be quiet because this is her business!!! I am all about supporting small business, which is why I was in the store but I will not be returning. Sat items down and left. I feel bad that I haven't written a review of the store before considering the fact I've been shopping there since they opened about 10 years ago. My children and I have had nothing but stellar service and love the selection of items there. I suppose I should know the names of the owner and her daughters who work there but for some reason don't. They always offer to walk around the store with me to give me recommendations for the presents that I'm buying. And if I don't want help, they leave me alone. One of the best parts about the store is their phenomenal gift wrapping that comes included in the price of their products. Yes, you pay a little more by shopping at the store, but I prefer supporting a local business, getting good customer service, and having the gifts wrapped in a way that always impresses the receiver. Plus, my kids always love shopping here as well. Somehow, they assist always end up getting something for themselves when we're shopping for gifts. LOL. read more

Just want to echo some of the other negative reviews for this "store." The lady who runs this place is NOT a nice person. She has an attitude, as if you are lucky to be allowed to be customer at her store. Apparently, she never got the memo in Business 101 that the customer is always right. We had a store credit. Keep in mind that a store credit or gift card means that this lovely woman was already paid money prior to actually selling a product at all (or after having another item returned). My wife was buying a baby gift for our neighbors and asked for a gift receipt (which we didn't get). After asking for the gift receipt, and without being asked, the owner volunteered that she "would not" wrap the gift because it was being bought with store credit. She then asked the owner if she had a little card or something to write on for the gift, who said she had a sticker but reiterated that she would not wrap the gift or sticker. No one asked her to wrap or write anything! Again, a store credit means the store was paid but had not yet sold any products. So, in essence, a gift card/store credit is a loan of sorts to the store in which they can use the money without first having to have sold an item. The owner would have wrapped the gift it was "fresh" money being spent, but because she already got a free loan (the gift card/store credit), she acted like petulant child and refused (without even being asked). There are so many small businesses, especially these days, that need and appreciate the public's patronage. Hip Hip Hooray does not appreciate their customers. Stay away from this store and its horrible owner. Disgusting! read more

This local small business is such a breath of fresh air from the Toys R Us's of the world. You can go in here with no earthly idea of what to get, and the owner and her daughters will help you promptly, so that you're quickly walking out with a (wrapped!) gift in hand. I would also say that many of the toys lead to more imaginative play and creativity; very little (if any) battery operated stuff made in China. I've basically stopped shopping anywhere else. I drove 45 minutes to get to this store on a Sunday. Got there at 315 pm. Hours for Sunday at their door say 11-4 and online too. Got there, and unfortunately, they were closed. There was nothing on their phone system that said they were closing early. I called the next day and they said, "oh we closed early because no one came and it was slow." Well, I came, but you closed too early to even know. Biggest waste of time. I love supporting small businesses, but things like this make it super frustrating. Save yourself the hassle and call before going in case they spontaneously close early. It's unfortunate giving them a 1 star rating as I didn't even get to check out the store. read more

Buyer BEWARE! One star is too generous a rating for this racket. The owner is nasty and unethical. Last week I purchased a bunch of merchandise, including 2 tank tops marked as $28. When I got to my car, I realized I was wrongly charged $38 for each tank top. I returned minutes later to inform her of the $20 overcharge but was quickly interrupted before finishing my sentence. She angrily said the tank tops are $38 and were all mis-marked with the wrong price. SERIOUSLY?! She knew she overcharged me and then didn't tell me; she just hoped I wouldn't notice and would get away with it. Not only did she not honor the price tagged on the merchandise, she did not inform me of the error. After asking her why she withheld this information, she ferociously barked for me to "SHUT UP", "STOP TALKING", "SHOOSH", and "GO AWAY". What is even worse was that my 10 year old daughter was by my side the whole time witnessing this incident. There is NOTHING unique about the merchandise that can't be found at other local stores. After further research, I learned the prices at Hip Hip Hooray are significantly higher for the exact same merchandise at other stores. Wish I knew, I would have saved a lot of $$ over the years. I have since reached out to my network of friends and based on their own terrible experiences with the store owner (30 families and counting) have all decided not to patron Hip Hip Hooray. Here are some examples of their poor customer service experience: - Two different people (separate incidents, same issue) went in to use their store credit and were told by the owner the credit had already been used. They had the physical copy of the store credit receipt and the owner insisted she remembered them using it and would not honor it. - Many people complain of being made to feel badly if they do not make an "expensive enough" purchase. - The owner has a serious aversion to any merchandise returns. If you return ANYTHING you are considered cheap. - On several occasions, when I returned merchandise (which, of course, was frowned upon) the tax was not returned but the store still charges tax on the new purchase. She double taxes her customers as a "penalty" for returning. The way customers (many loyal for years) are treated at Hip Hip Hooray is UNACCEPTABLE and should have consequences. I would like to say that I had very unpleasant experience with return and the ladies were not helpful whatsoever, I needed To return an item and the sales person told me that it's supposed be a second piece which I didn't receive originally with that gift, they were not very helpful to resolve my issue! Very nice and unique toys! I came in looking for a gift for a birthday boy and the lady (probably owner) went with me through each isle and showed me different toy areas and what would be appropriate toys for a 4 year old boy. Toys are very well organized and the store is small so you will find toys pretty fast. I selected a few different toys and they even wrapped them up for me after I paid. I will be back soon! I have been in here twice and had such a nice experience. Both times the employees and owner were super nice and helpful and helped me choose some really cute toys. I was a bit nervous because i had heard some of the negative remarks about the attitude of employees but im so glad i went in to see for myself because they could not have been nicer. I've owned a retail business catering to kids and i can tell you from experience that it is tough. Many people allow their kids to destroy stores and then refuse to pay for what they break or get upset when small stores wont break their own return policies for them even though they knew the policy before buying. They expect that a small business can and should act like Target or Nordstrom and that just isnt possible with a small business. While there is seldom a time its acceptable for an employee to treat a customer with anything but respect- that respect needs to go both ways. Just my .02. read more

I just came in to this store to do an exchange. I was happy and in a good mood. An older women, possibly the owner, handled my transaction and treated me without one shred of respect. I have seen her interact before with other people, seemingly wealthy older women, and her tone has been completely different. It is apparent that this woman favors certain clientele over others. I went to the Whole Foods next door and decided to check this toy shop out with my son. I thought the store had some cute things, but unfortunately not too many eco-friendly or green toys except brands like Alex and Melissa and Doug that I saw appropriate for a toddler. I was surprised in an affluent suburb in Chicago there still isn't a demand for this. Also, there were way too many things in that store to comfortably get around with a toddler. Is there such thing as a baby-proof toy store? If you need a gift and are in a crunch, they have some cute clothes for babies, new moms and newborns. Other than that, I would rather get something from Whole Foods toy section next door. I didn't see anything really that unique for ages 0-4. It looked like there was a lot for older kids. read more

The only place I will go to buy a toy or gift for kids. Other places may have cheap toys but if you want to get personalized service to get the correct gift, this is place. They have items you will not see at the big box stores. They will often monogram items on the spot and gift wrap them for you. This place is worth it because kids actually play with the things from here. read more

Went here because it was suggested by a friend that they have great jewelry for little girls. I was looking for a little bracelet. They did have great jewelry at resonable prices, but the owner is so rude! When I set the bracelet down to pay and I said you have great stuff, I will definitely have to come back and get more, she replied," well you should. Your five dollar bracelet isn't going to pay my rent." I said well that's not my problem and she replied, well it should be. I don't need this type of attitiude! I have shopped for gifts at this store several times in the past. I prefer to support local shops, so I am disappointed that report that I will not be going back to this store. I went in with my kids (2 & 4) and my friend with her daughter (2 yrs). The first thing the shop owner says is, "oh, I see I'm running a daycare..." Off putting to say the least. It's a toy store, you don't expect kids to be there? Not a few minutes later my daughter (2) began pushing a baby doll around in a small shopping cart and was scolded by the shop owner. I was watching her closely and she as not making a mess or causing any issues, so I did not feel like it was the owners place to speak to my child like that. If she had a problem with it, talk to me first. To top off our "great" shopping experience, my friend set her coffee cup (with a lid) on the floor to look at the item and the shop keeper took it aggressively and said, "I'm putting this up on the counter." Like she was a toddler about to spill all over the merchandise. Overall, I would not recommend this shop. They have an ok selection of items, however for the prices and poor customer service, I would go elsewhere. read more

They carry toys and crafts that inspire creativity and imagination. They also sell the cutest and best quality costumes for kids. No one in chicago carries cuter or better quality costumes (Rubies, Puppetworkshop...). Many of the same costumes can be found in the Chasing Fireflies catalog but here your kids can try them on and you don't have to pay shipping! They also have very cute boutique clothing. Oh now it's my time to chime in. This "older", short hair woman we speak of is NASTY! I took my 11 year old there a few weeks ago to use a store credit from a gift she returned a month earlier bc she couldn't find anything she wanted and was waiting for more camp stuff to come in. We were looking through the shower flip flops and I pulled out the basket and was looking through them with my daughter. Nasty woman (NW for short) abruptly came over, grabbed the basket away from me and sternly said, "We don't have her size," I replied, "You don't even know her size and I was planning on putting them all back too." After that I basically made my daughter pick out a pair of pj pants just so we could get out of there, use the store credit and never have to go back and see NW again!! I advise NO ONE to shop there ever!! So many other great, small business owner, local stores around here with nice, kind owners who actually care about their customers and how they treat people. read more

Three cheers for Hip, Hip Hooray! This is the most adorable local kids store for all ages. The selection is huge from novel gifts to the latest and greatest. The owner of the store is extremely helpful and always gives great gift ideas. Often times she knows the birthday child and makes sure that I select something they don't already have and that they will love the gift. They also provide free gift wrap and free personalization on select items. I love this store and really appreciate the friendly and warm customer service! I went to the Hip Hop Hooray store in NB/GV by the Whole Foods for the second time this past weekend and I cannot get my experiences out of my head. The 1st time we went, my child had worked hard for 3 weeks to earn a "reward", so I brought him there to pick anything he wanted. After several minutes of the owner (older woman) trying to "sell" my child different items and following him around to the point where he had to ask her for space- he settled on a Ring Pop. She just looked at him and I and said "Kid, you're going to have to buy more than that". Astonished, I told her that was his choice...and then awkwardly bought a catching mitt toy that was over priced and broke after 2 uses. This second time we went in was with my mom to buy my child a special gift from Grandma. Once again, the owner was trying to sell us all different items, but my child only wanted this tiny toy ice cream truck. He was playing with it and asking what kind of ice cream everyone liked and she said "Looks like you have one of those ADD kids, huh?". I was furious. I just said "he has an imagination and he is in a toy store as a special treat". #1, my child has never been diagnosed with ADD, nor has it been suggested that we do so #2 if he did have ADD, that is NO way to speak to the child or their mother. I cannot get this experience out of my head. So I bought the ice cream truck and walked my kids outside while my mom shopped. Of course she ended up with several items that were so overpriced and not even in my children's age range. I just wanted to share my experience with this store and it's owner and I will never go back. I usually like to support local shops, but I can't get behind this one. read more

My child was playing with a toy and was told by a staff person to be quiet because another woman in the store was on her cell phone. Really?! It is a toy store, not the library. Hip Hip Hooray in Northbrook is one of the best toy stores around; period. There is a rumor going around that the only reviews on Yelp that stick are the negative ones. Well I certainly hope that this positive one for this wonderful store stays for awhile so others discover this gem. The owner and staff of Hip Hip Hooray are extremely helpful and knowledgable. I go into the store about once a month to buy gifts for children of friends and family. I cannot believe how often new toys are made available. The toys are often more creative, educational and unique than what you find at Target, Walmart, Toys R Us, etc. The gift wrapping is free and the toys are competitively priced given the hands-on attention and assistance. I was disappointed that the store owner would not refund a game 12 days after purchase over Christmas. The store policy is no refunds past 10 days of purchase. I now know not to shop there especially over holidays when I like to shop early. The owner also lectured me about how she was not a big box store and lectured me about how unreasonable I was being. Hmmm ... well, as I entered the store, the owner (?) was busy disciplining a customer's children. Apparently, one of the youngsters punched her sibling in the arm (both kids were younger than kindergarten age) as they were using the coloring table, and the owner (?) said it was unacceptable and she didn't allow that in her store. Granted, I was walking in halfway through the altercation -- for all I know, they could have been related to her. While I don't disagree with the notion kids shouldn't hit one another, if it were my kids, I'd appreciate the chance to discipline themselves first, rather than a stranger doing it. It just made me uncomfortable. I had gone there in hopes of finding some of those idiot locker decorations that everyone just has to have now, seeing as it was my daughter's birthday. There was a small gaggle of women hanging out near the display, so I waited for a bit, browsing the store. Lots of cute stuff, but a little pricey. ($58 for a shirt) Once I got around to the locker accessory display, I settled on a mirror, some magnets, and what I thought was a cell phone/pencil holder that attaches to the locker door. I got in line to pay (mass chaos at the register) and first thing the owner (?) says to me is, "You can't buy just one of those. They come in sets of two." Um, OK. I didn't see any packaged, none in "sets of two" and really? What an unpleasant way to start the sale. Maybe if the owner had said, "Oh, I'm glad you like those, but they come in packages of two. We're all out, but I'd be willing to sell you that one," or "I'm really sorry, that's just part of the display. We're all out, but I'm getting more next week," I wouldn't have felt like an idiot. Instead, what could have been a $20 sale for the store turned into me saying, "No thanks," putting the stuff I had selected back, and walking out. But thanks for keeping me from buying stuff my daughter doesn't need anyway. read more
