WOMEN BE CAREFUL I am writing this to share my own experience with Douglas. Many many years ago I was sent to Douglas because the ENT practice couldn't resolve an issue with my ear. Perhaps 'Biofeedback ' could resolve it. Part of his process was to lie me on a table and Douglas literally says "I have to check your gag reflexes". I felt creeper out and got out as fast as I could. So many years later I still feel this frightening violation. I decided to see if I could figure out who it was. I checked Yelp The first practitioner I looked at was Douglas. There was the 1 star review by someone else whose experience was highly disturbing. WOMEN, BEWARE. my experience with douglas warrants my first yelp review ever, and i'm writing it to protect other women. I had received a massage from him once before, many years ago, and my experience at that time was uneventful. this time, however, was completely different and left me feeling violated. here is a (sadly, non-exhaustive) list of violations and inappropriate behavior i experienced at the hands of douglas: * he almost walked in on me while i was essentially naked. he'd knocked after giving me almost no time at all to change clothes, and i said, "just a moment, please." he immediately opened the door, peeked his head in, and asked, "was that a yes?" * during silence and without any context, he said, "it's good to see you again" -- *as he was pulling down my panties.* * a few minutes after that, for some reason he thought it was a good idea to inform me that he had been accused of sexual harassment -- right after he started heavily massaging my bottom. cringey. * he referred to my body as "a Maserati" -- on two separate occasions. * while he was manipulating and stretching my legs, he said, "it's not every day you get a skinny white guy manipulating your body." (I am a woman of color.) * it gets worse. toward the very end, while he was doing trigger work, he said, "press your body against my finger... *just let it slide right in... just let it slide riiiight in...*" ewww! that's when I went from feeling low-key uncomfortable to high-key icky. I feel disgusted even writing the words he said to me! that was the straw that broke the camel's back. his phrasing and emphasis struck me as wholly inappropriate, especially given that i was in such a vulnerable position. In addition to all of this, he ridiculed me for believing in chiropractic and disparaged me for wearing a mask (in his very hot, humid room with zero air circulation), telling me they don't do anything, and that besides, he won't be able to hear me as well. "well, I don't intend to talk much," I'd said. "I'm exhausted and I'm probably gonna fall asleep!" He responded with something akin to, "Ha! Well, good luck! I like to talk!" or something to that effect. And, indeed, he talked the entire time, which seemed so incredibly rude, given my stated preference. He made it abundantly clear throughout the massage that he wasn't there to respect any of my requests. For instance, he insisted that i spend part of my massage time walking up and down the hallway because he wanted to assess my gait -- never mind that i'd told him i was there for neck and shoulder work and reminded him that i'd specifically selected a massage whose description *did not* include this postural assessment. i kept resisting and he kept insisting, until it was obvious that he wouldn't accept no for an answer. i finally gave in and wasted 15-20 min of my massage time walking for him, to no benefit for myself. Furthermore, I told him before we began about the areas I wanted to focus on (entirely upper body), but ultimately he spent less than 5 minutes on all those areas combined, and even joked that he knew I had specific requests, but he was going to do the massage *his* way. This kind of mentality is dangerous and should raise red flags for all women. Even if you view the possibility of getting violated by douglas as remote, don't expect to get a relaxing massage. Not only will he talk the entire time, charge you for a 2hr massage but only massage you for an hour and spend the rest of the time griping about how little money he makes (!) and making you walk up and down the hall, but, believe it or not, he has an actual CUCKOO CLOCK in the massage room -- not even kidding. a cuckoo effin' clock! how ironic. and it somehow went off multiple times during what ended up being a 1hr massage. Not exactly anyone's idea of a relaxing massage. The next day, I scoured the web looking for other reviews of douglas outside of yelp. I found that another woman also reported feeling totally uncomfortable during her massage, and that he'd mentioned being accused of sexual harassment to her, as well. I had my credit card company reverse the charge because i refuse to pay to be violated. Multiple bodyworker friends, both male and female, are recommending I report him to the licensing agency. I do see that several women here rate him highly. I don't know how he chooses who he will respect and who he will violate. But you've been warned. Book with this person at your own risk. read more

I had my first session with Douglas today. I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. We started off talking and then he had me walk. I am a dancer and have great balance and move well on the dance floor. But walking always felt clunky to me. I felt that I never learned to walk correctly and he helped me with that today. It was hard but I went home and walked through my neighborhood slowly focusing on what he told me. Then I walked again tonight and what I noticed was I felt no tension in my neck or shoulders. It still feels alien to me but that is to be expected. It was a great session. Thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and look forward to seeing him again soon. Thank you Douglas. read more

Both myself and another chiropractor commented on how we could tell when Doug worked on the patient, because the mobility of the joints was where so good. Had a wonderful deep tissue massage from Douglas earlier this week. He really took the time to find out all my ailments and worked diligently to make me feel close to perfect again. I originally thought a 2 hour session would be too long but by the time it was over, I wished it could have continued for another hour. I felt like I was floating just walking back to my car. I've never had a through deep tissue massage like this before. Great conversation as well. I highly recommend him to anyone. read more

My guy friend and I did the two hour couples massage training class with Douglas. First, he took the time and attention to hear what we wanted from the class and what some of our challenges were with our (older) bodies. He then showed us, using one of us as a demo how to do 13 different massage techniques targeting various areas on the back, shoulders and neck that were all very effective. I already knew Douglas was well trained and competent but it was a pleasure to see and later hear how pleased and impressed my partner was after the session, this from someone who used to be less than enthusiastic about massage. Douglas is one of the best bodyworkers in Sonoma County that I have had the blessing to work with. As a body worker myself I have very high standards. Douglas fits the bill. He takes the time to really hear what is going on with you. He evaluates your posture and your gait. His hands are PRESENT to what is going on under them. And if anything feels uncomfortable he is open to your communication and adjusts. I would say aside from wanting your highest healing, he wants you to be comfortable. He's pressure is "just right". Best bodywork I have ever experienced. Douglas is skilled and intuitive with his hands. I make it a point to see him once or twice a month. He really keeps me aligned and healthy. He's friendly, professional, intelligent, intuitive, and very caring. Douglas spends so much time with you during the session (usually around 2 hrs). And his prices are amazingly affordable. He even offers a sliding scale based upon what you can afford. He also has great flexible hours of availability. He is available for sessions after regular "work hours" and even on weekends. His schedule is great for me since I have busy work-weeks and it isn't feasible for me to get bodywork done mid-day (a lot of places have their last appt at 4pm). No matter what, he always finds a way to schedule my session at a time that works for me. I recommend him to anyone. He's fantastic! read more

Douglas is more then a massage therapist. He truly knows what he is doing. If you have pain, structural problems, or stuckness in energy, difficulty walking, whatever it is that keeps you from feeling fully energetic, or moving freely, he can help your body be more flexible, experience less pain, and have way more energy. Highly recommended! Doug is a miracle worker, plain and simple. He's truly the gold standard for a massage therapist. He was my assigned therapist when he was working at a Calistoga Spa 8 years ago. I had never been to a spa or had a massage before, and it was like fate intervened and gave me the best therapist EVER. All subsequent other massages with other therapists fail in comparison (and yes, that includes Burke Williams, and Nob Hill Spa and any other hoity toity place where you are paying more for the ambiance than a good massage). I try to go back once in a while since his office is quite a drive. He tackles any problem areas with the skill of a therapist that has been working for years (of which he has 30+ years) and approaches a massage not in the traditional sense but in a very spiritual and elemental way--body healing is a good way to describe it. He works with a gamut of clients which include regular folks and those that have acute pain / arthritis issues, and just has an innate knowledge of what is needed to bring pain relief and to make you feel better. It is a delight to meet a person who is kindhearted and an amazing healer. Not only that, he let's you pay based on a sliding scale. He is about getting a good result rather than getting a paycheck. I tried too many bodyworkers for my back issues which now has gotten so bad that i can't hike/walk too well. I get debilitating migraines as well. I found Doug last yr but was unable to get an appt with him then (i'm 1.5 hours away), and finally recently, i contacted him and made an appt a month out. I talked to him over the phone for 5-10m about my issues and was skeptical since i've been through so many referrals. But, i was pleasantly surprised, he met with me and spent 15 m with gait analysis and afterwards, we got ready to do the bodywork. I met Douglas last week for a body tuning session. My sciatic was acting up and I had pain in my mid-back and neck as well. We discussed my history at length and he felt he could help correct my problems. He is a very spiritual person, well informed, a healer with great technique like I've never experienced before. The session was successful at alleviating my pain symptoms, although it took a couple days to recover from the deep tissue work, which was little price to pay! Doug is absolutely amazing! I showed up a little past my start time and I still feel I received the whole experience. He first took the time to hear me out and explain his technique and what he offers. After listening to me he was able to sum up what I needed in my massage. This was the best therapeutic massage I've ever experienced. His pressure was perfect! Not too soft not too hard and he relieved ever "knot" around my shoulder without, as he puts it,"biting the leather." While he worked his magic he shared his knowledge of how I can learn to release the tension myself on a daily bases by breathing and correcting my walk. I felt like he really listened to me and was in tune to the tension in my muscles. After getting up from the amazing two hour massage I felt like a huge weight was lifted from my body!
