What can I say that hasn't already been said? Yes, the bagels are expensive at $3 a bagel, but they are so freaking good. The lines are always super long and wrap around the block. You can order ahead of time (no same day orders) for pick-up. If you order 12 bagels, you can get 1 free. Because the lines are always crazy, and parking is never guaranteed, I typically order bulk in advance for pick-up. You can cut all the bagels in half when you get home and freeze them. They toast perfectly and keep really well. I personally love the pumperthingel, the eggy-thing, the classic everything and the salt & pep bagel. The salt & pep bagel can be a little salty, but goes really well with cream cheese, a slice of tomato, pickled red onions, and a sprinkle of fresh dill. If I'm eating just a cream cheese bagel, I usually scratch off some of the salty flakes. I'm normally not a big breakfast person so I haven't tried any of their sandwiches yet but I've only heard good things! If you're not a bagel connoisseur, sure, maybe you'll opt for a cheaper bagel option ~ but if you have bagel standards, this is your place to go in the east bay! read more

This is an okay bagel shop. The staff is friendly and the prices aren't bad. Their toasting is a bit off, as my bagel did have some noticeable burning on the edges, which made more than a few bites unpleasant. The cream cheese spread is very dense and pretty much just as it comes from the tub. It was pretty underwhelming to pay $1.50 for a couple heaping globs of boring cream cheese, but nothing crazy. The other toppings are looked fresh, so maybe that would be the way to go? The egg bagel I got had a good crunch on the exteroir and a soft doughy inside. Not a great bite, as I struggled to get through both sides cleanly and pushed a lot of the spread out from the edges a good number of times. Bit of a mess. Not much in the way of flavor. Egg bagels usually have a richness and are extra soft, so it was disappointing to see this as more like a regular bagel with 1 extra yolk in the mix. The bagels sold at Boichick Bagels are the real deal and worth the wait, as lines, especially on the weekends, can be overwhelming at first glance. Owner Emily Winston opened Boichick two years ago and is a fully Kosher-certified shop that has evolved from local food festivals to pop-ups to the bagel shop of both Winston's and the local community's dreams! Located on the corner of College and Alcatraz Avenues in the Fairview Park neighborhood, in what was once appropriately enough a Noah's Bagel location, Boichick represents a new wave of bagel culture in the Bay Area where the thought process in creating the perfect bagel comes from trial and error, in this case they create traditional water bagels, boiled first before they get baked on stone at Boichick. Perhaps the greatest claim to fame in Boichick's brief history came from a glowing review this past spring from none other than the New York Times who declared the best bagels in the country are not in New York but in the hills of Berkeley, California. With such high praise, of course more crowds are to be expected, but the team at Boichick seem to have a process down for standing in line outside their front door, ordering from one employee stationed at their front door and paying with a credit card reader, all at a distance. This means you can't go inside their gloriously remodeled storefront to see the equipment in which the bagels are made, but the team working inside is still hammering away at creating a multitude of bagel creations from a variety of different bagel flavors from their menu. On the Friday afternoon that I decided to bite the bullet after hemming and hawing on finding the time to get down to Boichick, I just happened to get lucky and find parking at a meter right across the street with time in it no less. Taking this as a good sign, I got in line and the whole ordering and waiting for my order to come through took about fifteen minutes total. What's nice about the menu at Boichick is that they describe the steps in which you can order a bagel sandwich, in their words, like a proper New Yorker! Step 1 is to pick your bagel from fifteen choices. Step 2 is to decide if you want it untoasted, toasted or dark toasted. Step 3 is to decide your Spread from over twelve different options all sold at various prices. Step 4 is to decide your Salads and Fish from four options sold at various prices. And Step 5 is to select your veggies all sold at various prices. Of course you can choose to do just a few of those steps, but beware you may not be perceived as a proper New Yorker! And then they have traditional bagel sandwiches made with a fixed set of ingredients and this is where my eyes took me, as their Classic made with chive cream cheese, nova lox smoked fish, tomatoes, red onions, and capers sold at $15.50 was calling my name. As was their Mensch bagel sandwich made with whitefish salad, cucumbers and tomatoes sold at $10.50. For my Classic sandwich, I really wanted to try it with their onion bagel, but they were sold out by the time I came, so I opted for their poppy bagel and for my Mensch sandwich I opted for their Pumpernickel with Caraway and Salt as I knew that their brown bagel loaf mixed with their whitefish salad mix would make for a beautiful and overall tasty sandwich. To go with my two bagel sandwiches, I wanted to wash down my meal, and so I ordered their Chocolate Malted Iced Coffee for $4.75. My total bill was over $30 before the tip which wasn't super affordable but once you get your meal, you will realize it is well worth the cost just by judging by how much food one gets in each sandwich. As soon as I got home my Mensch sandwich was still crisp from the light toasting it received and still each bagel was still chewy and soft with each bite. I can confirm that both sandwiches were saltier than I am normally used to, but that goes with the territory with the homemade boiled and baked bagels at Boichick. My iced coffee drink was super strong, which was to be expected as it had both chocolate malt and caffeine from the coffee, but I wasn't expecting to be so wired after just a few sips. But I came to Boichick for the bagels and was not disappointed despite the price tag, which has some backlash for the price tag, but here you get what you pay for and at Boichick these were some of the tastiest bagels I have ever had thanks to the depth of maltiness, denseness, and chewiness with every bite. I can't wait to return one day to follow the menu's lead and build my own so to speak as their Eggything (an egg bagel with Everything seasoning) and Pumpernickel Raisin Swirl were calling my name because at Boichick, it feels as if I'm ordering from a traditional New York Jewish delicatessen which just happens to reside in the hills of Berkeley. read more

The hype is (almost) real! I've had Boichik bookmarked for a while, but they've really blown up in popularity after the New York Times article that named Boichik Bagels the best bagels (over NY!). I decided to brave the potential lines and stop by on a Friday when I was off from work. Luckily, the line wasn't too long when I arrived around 9:15am. Although the line almost reached the end of the block, it was only about a 15 minute wait to get to the front to order and receive my bagel sandwich. Everyone was really good about social distancing and wearing masks (including their staff). I really appreciated that they had menus posted throughout the line, so you could take a look and decide while you were waiting. I wasn't a fan of their ordering system- the person who takes your order sits ~6 feet away, behind a sheet of plexiglass. You basically have to shout at each other to place your order, and then you have to shout whether or not you want to add a tip. I hope they find a way where patrons can just select the tip amount on their end. You can order a custom bagel sandwich, or choose a bagel sandwich from their short menu: Classic (lox), Mensch (Whitefish Salad), or Daily Special (Honey Walnut w/Nutella). Their bagels are $3/each, and if you buy 12 you get 1 free. This is clearly not a New York bagel place, I think they want to be with the Greek blue coffee cups but they're trying too hard. Every small mom and pop bodega and deli in NYC is loads better and much, much cheaper. They're just capitalizing on west coast excitement for the legendary New York bagel. We got there around 8:45a, about a dozen people in line. Excellent service and got our order fast. They had an amazing system outside to make it efficient and Covid safe. We ordered two classics (one on everything, one on onion) and two coffees with oat milk (no additional cost) We parked about a 5 min walk away, by the time we opened our coffees they were cold. Onto the bagels. The bagels were not toasted as asked for, the tomatoes still had their seeds and juice so together with the cream cheese made a milky oozing puddle. We were eating these in the car so it was not great. The onion Classic had overwhelming cream cheese, and the everything Classic was cut so oddly that I couldn't actually hold it (picture included). It's like they didn't stack it before cutting. Mine also was missing red onion. Fish was fresh, not as flavorful as most lox is and should be. Overall they had fresh produce, clearly. They have all the components but missed the mark if they're going to taut being a NYC bagel place. If they said they're just a bagel place I'd maybe give them three stars. read more

I'm a big fan of their Pumpernickel flavor bagel, it has just the right amount of salt and herbs and texture, I gobbled the whole thing up before I remembered that my girlfriend didn't have a bite yet... opps! ..heh.. At long last I was able to check out the famed Boichik Bagels on a Friday afternoon when the line was more manageable. We got there around 11 am and there were about six people ahead of us. If you try to come on a weekend, be prepared to see it snake down the block and around the corner. All of the different salads and spreads sounded very tempting, but we decided that the Classic sandwich would be the best first impression/thing to judge by. $16 seemed quite steep, but the size and filling of the bagel are generous and proportional to value. All of the components were tasty, but the bagel itself was just above average. We both said we wouldn't wait more than what we did (about ten minutes) for it. I think the fact that there's no space to eat it onsite while it's hot and freshly toasted detracts from the experience too - but we did see that a large dine-in site is in the works in Berkeley. I've tried various bagels but my favorite one remains the everything bagel. It has long bits of toasted dry onion, which are a nice flavor pop. I do wish there was more seasoning on the bagel, though. The service is also great and fast. Everyone is always nice and it takes max 5 minutes to get your bagel once you've ordered. Seriously the best bagels around, line moves quick even on the weekends. Get here early to make sure the bagel you want is in stock. My recommendation for people who love everything bagels is the salt and pepper bagel, it's underrated and I love the large flakes of salt and fresh cracked pepper. I was intrigued by bialy bagel but they said since it's so thin they can't toast it - but I can buy it and toast at home. I ended up getting an Egg - which has everything seasoning on it with egg salad and lox cream cheese. Yes it was two meals for me! And the iced coffee was so strong and tasty. The cream cheeses I got were pink label (tangy cream cheese - tasted like sour cream), regular, and honey/walnut. I'm usually a savory person but I really like the honey walnut! After moving to the bay area from NYC I had been missing the easy access to bagel spots. My go to in SF was Uncle Benny's which filled the void and also doubles as a donut stop. I now live in the East Bay and decided to finally give Boichik a try. Great quality. The bagels had just the right amount of chew and the shmears were tasty and soft. I opted to bring the bagels home and use some fresh tomatoes from the garden and my own pickles so I can't speak to the quality of their toppings. I will definitely be back. read more

I came here to experience the hype that's been going around ever since the New York Times article dropped and let me just say- worth it!! Even though the line seems really long, it moves by quite fast and they're generous with the amount of filling they put in your bagel. I had to try The Classic on the everything bagel, and I agree that it's better than other lox bagels I've had in New York. Though the price of the sandwich shocked me a bit (~$15), after eating it I appreciate the meal and would buy it again as a treat yourself day. Literally everytime I visit Berkeley, I drive by ths treet where boichik is at and I always see this line wrap around the building and around the block . For the longest time I thought it was some underground club that people were trying to get in, then realizing that it was 6AM that it probably isnt a club... come to realize its this bomb ass bagel place. My sister and I came up with a game plan to wake up at 6 and to be in line before their 7 AM open. We thought we would be first in line but boy were we wrong. we were already waiting at the end of the first block. The wait once it opened moved fairly quick, i'd say about 30 ish minute wait. I remember before the doors opened a couple of people behind me were wondering if they would be sold out by the time we got to the door, which my first thought was holy cow how good are these bagels? We bought 2 bagel sandwiches, one being the bagel of the day, a lox sandwich, and then a regular sesame bagel for the road. buying 3 bagels seemed like a good idea until we saw that people were buying the bagels by the dozen. I held my stance and went with the 3 bagels. By the time we were eating, I was super bummed we didnt buy more. they were the best bagels i've had. YES YES YES YES. WHAT A BAGEL! Super soft and just the right amount of chew. We finally found New York's competition. We ordered the Egg Everything bagel with hatch chili cream cheese add onion. Came out to $5.50. I would of paid twice the amount of that bagel. That was fantastic! Had a generous amount of cream cheese as it should. Shoutout to the cream cheese gods. There's a feeling you get when you eat something special. Don't know how to put it into words but when you know, you know. What I do know is we're coming back here. The lady taking our order was very nice and helpful! Extremely friendly and made the experience that much better! They are taking orders outside and have two separate tables for getting through the lines quickly. When we arrived there was about 5 people in front of us. In total from the minute we stepped in line, it took 6 minutes to wait, order, wait again, then enjoy our little doughy heaven. In a nice quiet section of Berkeley. I woke up this morning pretty hungover and sadly it's my dads birthday so I'm forced to be social. Normally I go to McDonald's for hangover food but my housemate recommended this place! oh my god, I got the onion bagel with cream cheese and cucumbers. So good, it literally brought me back to life. There was an elderly lady working the cashier and she was so sweet, she triggered my mommy issues in the best way possible. She told me to have a good day and I wanted to hug her. These bagels are so fricken good, this is my new go-to place. I'm going to take my ex boyfriend here so he will fall back in love with me. read more

I am from the east coast and I know good bagels. Unlike the NYT I do not think Boichik Bagels are better than my home region. BUT...they are the closest you will get in this city and beyond. They also make pumpernickel unlike many CA bagel makers. Great process for ordering, quick service and wonderful bagels. read more
