I usually get deli sandwiches which have deli meats but this place has fried chicken sandwiches . So I was craving a sandwich so I headed to Crave Subs in Downtown Berkeley next to BART station. They have lots of sandwiches available on the menu. On a Summer stroll getting some sun in Downtown Berkeley I landed at Crave Subs. Inside it's like you stepped into an ice cream parlor with a comic book shop and arcade and a deli all at the same time. You will see sandwiches on the menu called the Pikachu, Ned Flanders, and Bart Simpson. You will see Chewbacca fries along with the Spider-Man fries and the vegan Sailormoon fries. I got the Captain Boom Halal Fried Chicken, Boom Boom Sauce, Cheddar Cheese and Crave Sauce on a roll. It was tasty and a bit crunchy and had lots of flavor. It's one of the best Halal chicken sandwiches I had. If you crave a fried chicken sandwich then Crave Subs is the spot. It will "cost "you an extra 50 cents if you want to "floss" with extra drip "sauce" to show off on social media and during OSL my social media feed was stuck in the" Land of OZ" If you want great fried chicken sandwich you don't need to visit KFC or meet the chicken"commanders" like the late "Colonel Sanders" just get a Captain Boom with "Halal chicken standards" or grab a Pikachu sandwich or a turkey sandwich called the "Ned Flanders "

One of my biggest pet peeves is when restaurants reduce the guality or quantity of their meal to cut costs while charging premium prices. I will say I didn't mind paying a few dollars more for their subs in the past. I went there today for the first time in a couple of years, ordered a regular size basic ruben sandwich (no add-ons) and was ok paying nearly $18 dollars for just the sandwich until they handed it to me. what I got was a small 6" sub. When did their subs shrink?? in this economy we are all struggling. I get it, things cost more but Craves' owner is not doing his patrons a service by charging them premiums while cutting back on the meals. If you're ok paying that much for a shrunken sub, more power to you. I l, however, will not be going back there.

They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.

This place is great! I work nearby at the Research Institute and this is one of the only eateries around there. Although at first I was kinda bummed that I would have only one eatery around to get lunch from, it turned out okay because this place is great! They have really good food, and they provide good portions too so I'm not left hungry after finishing my food. Their sandwiches are delicious. They're soups aren't always the best but they're sandwiches are bomb. Their coffee really is quite strong. If you're not used to very strong coffee, be ready for jitters through the rest of the day! read more

I live a block away from this cafe but absolutely avoid the place because the owner is a jerk. I had a different review detailing my experiences, but I deleted it when I met a different owner named Keyta who was really sweet. Unfortunately, I've only seen her once or twice and the guy who is always there just acts like he wants to fight everyone. I miss the two previous rounds of owners but it looks like these people are here to stay. It's really unfortunate because it's so close to my home. They really need some work on atmosphere. They blast corny soft rock music and white-guy "funk" and they've been littered with acid casualties and Berkeley dads on both occasions that I've been. This is the kind of place that out-of-touch gentrifier techies and burning man types go to feel at home. read more

Every time someone enters **or leaves**, the door chime sounds **twice**. With a constant flow of customers, that means the chime is going off over and over again throughout the entire time you're sitting here. It's loud and extremely distracting if you're trying to work, read, study, or even just enjoy your coffee. I politely asked one of the employees if the chime could be disabled. He explained that they need it so they know when customers enter. I could understand that in a large store where employees might be working out of sight, but this is a relatively small café. There were two employees working up front, with the counter roughly 12 feet from the entrance, and a steady stream of customers coming through. The café itself has a nice atmosphere and could be a great place to sit and work, which is why this is particularly frustrating. A motion indicator, quieter single chime, or some other less intrusive system would accomplish the same purpose without subjecting customers to a double chime every few minutes. It's a small operational issue, but after sitting here for an hour, it has had a disproportionately large effect on the experience. I hope management considers changing it.
