This is the place most convenient for me--right in my neighborhood. And I have gotten good food there as well. My problem is with the owner operator: He can be super rude to me while he seems to like other customers. Last time he did it I stopped going for a year or more. Fast forward: I have been on a jag to find the super classic NYC bodega breakfast sandwich. Egg and cheese on a soft roll that was grilled on flattop for a minute (sometimes a panini press does the job--it hard to find a good one that doesn't cost $20 in the east bay these days. Today when walked in and he seemed to have nothing but time on his hands. I said what I was looking for and he snapped back, " I don't know what that is. Why don't you start here with the menu." Those words are all fine but he delivered them with an edge like he thinks he's the sandwich nazi (no line out your door sweet heart) The menu is poorly placed for an average height man to read. And I thought, nah I am not doing this again. It does seem like Tristan reads these comments, but I don't expect a change in his attitude about service. He clearly doesn't want to do special orders with the 10 ingredients he has to work with. So carry on. But when you wonder why you are not busier, this is a little insight as to why. I am so glad that Tristan and Earthly Coffee are part of our neighborhood. I'm not a big coffee drinker, but I order food from here on the regular and it is solid. You really can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches and the breakfast burritos are great. There are good veg / vegan options too if that's your thing. read more

Went in this morning- like other reviews I agree this is more of a locals spot. Person working there was helping another customer when I arrived, actually just talking. Seemed nice with previous customer but I did not get the same service. Not very friendly, maybe it takes a while for him to warm up to you? As I was leaving I said thank you but was not acknowledged. Bagel was ok, got a cream cheese (just on half the bagel) with veggies (tomato, onion, cucumber). Picture attached My daughter got a breakfast sandwich on sourdough with avocado (no veggies) she said it was a little dry and not that tasty. Sorry no picture. I got a drip coffee- Coffee was mediocre, strong but not exactly in the best tasting way. Kind of bitter. They don't allow people to put their own cream and sugar, they do it for you so it wasn't made to my liking and I didn't want to bother by asking for more cream. If you live close by it's probably your only option in walking distance. Not many other shops close by. Maybe if I lived in the neighborhood I would give it another try but since I don't I won't be going out of my way to eat here. read more

Earthly Coffee is located on a high traffic street. I'd imagine if you drop by earlier the parking would be better but there's also residential parking if you're willing to walk a little. The upbeat acoustic morning music, quaint table setup, and the owner's down to earth attitude really ties the ambiance together. I've ordered the pepperoni bite (delicious btw) and a hot chai sub oat milk. Did not disappoint at all. Would love to return if I am in the nearby area running errands. I stumbled on this place when working across the street servicing a customer's equipment and needed to grab lunch nearby. Had the best turkey and Swiss deli sandwich of my life, not kidding. Now, every time I drive by the place I salivate. Had the chance to stop by there again today, one year later, and the turkey and Swiss sandwich was even better! This is definitely more of a local spot. We were driving through Oakland on the way back home and stopped by. I have a gluten allergy and was hoping to get something quick. As soon as we walked in and I asked for gluten free options ( Which btw on the menu online, glute free options twere present. See photo attached). The person behind the counter answered " no" before I could finish my sentence. He offered a salad option but since it was 7.30AM, I did not sound appetizing. I proceeded to ask if he would be able to make me a burrito without the tortilla and he said that it wouldn't come out right. Just felt unwelcome. I have worked in service industry for years and so has my family, surprised to see they could not offer even a side of eggs? I ended up getting the he burrito and throwing out the tortilla. Really nothing to rave about. Ambience is okay. The plants and decorations were cute but overall the place could use some deep cleaning. Just didn't feel like customer service was there. Please update the menu on Yelp so no others make the same mistake I did. read more

A divvy neighborhood cafe with very delicious food and strong coffee. The owner is your chef! I got the roast beef sandwich with fresh horse radish on a baguette and it was so damn good. I am European with European flavor buds and this sandwich made me feel I was back there not somewhere in Oakland. Dress code: casual Plenty space for laptop workers and readers - and surprisingly not many in here. Most people tend to take their items "to go" instead of eating in here. Decor: everything is second hand. The couches, the board games, the chairs, the random books. Don't expect chic / sheek and modern. Expect a great cook inviting you into their living room. I just wish it wasn't on such a busy street. Been here multiple times and can't wait to try the rest of their menu. Ps. Food might take a second as it's made fresh when it's ordered. This cafe cafe is a real sweet spot, good food great coffee. Just as you would want your neighborhood cafe they serve food with a flair- their breakfast sandwich or burrito is the bomb! They have McLaughlin coffee so they know their grinds and flavor is strong but well rounded. read more

It is time I updated my review. It's been three years and ownership has changed. The food and service are still great. I work nearby and get lunch here frequently. There are two things that are good that aren't on the menu: Gluten free bread for sandwiches is available! - just ask. I think salad isn't on the menu, but the guys always make one for me. Oh yeah, I had one of those bacon jam sandwiches last week and it was fantastic. I am going back for more. Review from 2010 with previous owner I second everything Rachel Z said. The place is great. Coffee drinks and pastries are standard fare, but their lunches are special! The owner keeps creating new foods that are excellent. I've been in here a handful of times, mostly to grab coffee on my way somewhere. This time I noticed they had some fresh juices. Got one of them (mango lemonade of sorts) and loved it (as did my young boys, who I had to fight with to not drink it all!). ;) Both guys behind the counter were super friendly - notably, the one that carried himself like the owner. Visiting California for my second time and this breakfast place made me feel right at home. I know they have lunch but I think their breakfast is just amazing. The "couple" behind counter were not only friendly but so passionate about what they were doing. I LOVED the atmosphere while I was here and the food was delish!!!! I ordered a bagel with eggs and cheese, my friend got a burrito. Both were amazing and we shared each other's food. Their iced coffee was made well and not watered down like other places. The bagels were soft and warm. Overall I recommend this place to anyone, if you live in the area this could be your replacement to Starbucks or something haha If the owners / couple read this, I LOVED U GUYS! The stars are for the food and coffee itself. Excellent spot, aesthetics wise. I decided to come in to finish some school work. The cook/owner, was pretty passive aggressive after he saw I had some food from another place. I'd take it as a compliment, I chose your spot to eat and enjoy the atmosphere. The bathrooms were pretty dirty, but then again, I went there to eat not to use the bathroom. Maybe it was because I came in 45 mins before closing. Might try again. read more

What's different....the coffee is now what they serve at Cole coffee on College (local roaster McLaughlan), there are great sandwiches and home made soup, it's clean and comfortable, regular hours (to expand soon!). Food: The breakfast bagel was terrible and overpriced. The bagel itself tasted stale. And the whole thing was super bland. Service: The woman behind the cashier was friendly enough. I asked her how she was doing and we shared a brief exchange. But the cook was another story. It was 7:30 on a Monday morning and I was one of the only people there. I was standing at a high table with my laptop. I'd moved over the stool to make room and left my bag on it. There were countless places to sit, including at that table. If someone walked in and wanted to sit right next to me, I of course would have moved my stuff - after momentarily wondering why they couldn't warm ANY Of the other seats in the place. And yet the cook steps out from behind the counter and starts moving my stuff, suggesting that I've commandeered the whole table. It was bizarre. I didn't feel welcome and won't come back. read more
