I was worried about having to kennel my dog when we went out of town on vacation during the summer. He is very sensitive to change and I was worried it would stress him out by leaving him somewhere new. My husband did the drop off and pick up. He assured me Bear did great and that everyone there loved him, but I was still afraid he would come home with non-stop diarrhea. Thankfully he didn't. Phew! I still wasn't convinced it didn't stress him out though. We had to kennel him again recently when we went out of state for my grandma's funeral, and this time I did the drop off. I couldn't believe how excited Bear was when we got to the kennel. And the staff was equally excited to see him. This eased MY stress and I felt I was leaving him in good hands. And no stomach issues when he came home after again. Got me thinking, my daughter loves going to hotels on vacation, so maybe it was a vacation at a doggy hotel for him, too? Just thankful I can breathe easier knowing I have somewhere I can trust to take care of my fur baby when we can't take him with us! read more

I'd like to start off by saying PLEASE visit a facility before you board. I beg this of you because if you really love your dog, you should be as appalled by this place as I was. I wish I had taken pictures to share here, but honestly I never want to see the inside of this place again. I called and asked if I could come by for a walk-thru (without my dog) to see how the facility was, personnel on the phone was quiet, but polite. Not a problem. Easy enough to get there too. I arrived at Boise Kennels, a little surprised that it is actually someone's house. I was a little hesitant at first, but decided that I may be wrong about my gut feeling and walked into their office anyway. This was red flag number one. As soon as I walked into their office a horrifically strong odor of ammonia- a chemical in bleach and in urine that has been left to sit too long. I'm not saying this was a "nice, clean" waft, it was downright pungent. The owner introduced himself, showed me the outdoor area (which is failry nice, to be honest), and then led me back into the office to see the actual kennels. I'm not kidding when I say my immediate thought was "oh my G**... the mold". Seriously- red flag number two. I peered down a long, very, VERY dark hallway lined on the walls with minuscule chain link/soggy plywood crates. The owner walked me down the hallway past all of these cages (the bedding inside appeared clean at first glance, I didn't want to get to close to inspect otherwise). Some dogs had huge scrapes on the bridges of their noses- I assume from sticking their nose through the chain linked fencing that makes up the door to the cages. For the larger "families" of dogs, they have a chain-linked caged room with a door similar to what you'd see walking through one of those haunted mansions- the kind like in an old prison where they keep someone in a straight-jacket (without the padding, of course) and have a small barred window to monitor them. The "rooms" seemed to be the size of a large bath tub with 2-4 large breed dogs in them. They're small and the dogs are in there for a majority of their stay. The owner said that for an extra price each day, he lets them out for about 30 minutes in the grassy area. All told, the owner says they spend 2 hours outside of their holes. Their outdoor time kennels are under a corrugated metal roof. Dark, damp, concrete or packed dirt flooring. The kennels are narrow and short and stacked right next to each other. I can't imagine my dog being in a place like this- there's absolutely no way I would recommend this place ton ANYONE just based on the conditions these dogs endure. I implore you. Visit ANY facility before you reserve a boarding. Don't know if my review is realistic? Visit them. Walk through their facility and make your own judgement call. This was my experience and it was so bad. Maybe the workers care, maybe they don't- but as far as the management goes, I can only make assumptions based on the appearance of the kennels. It's a cheap place to bring your dog, sure, but its absolutely not worth risking your dog's health to save a couple bucks. read more

I have had my cat stay here twice. The first time that he stayed there, I felt like the price as well as the regular photos were worth the negatives. This time I have decided that it is not the case. I picked up my cat and seemed so upset when we were driving and first arriving home and he smelled absolutely wretched. The whole place smells so terrible that I can't even bear to go inside without feeling ill. All of the people there are very nice and as I said they send regular picture check ins, but it does not make up for the state of the place. I had to give him a bath, and he is just now calmed down and back to his normal self while I brush him and he dries off. I don't think I will bring him back. read more

They always pick up the phone as I call to check on him when I am away. Max has stayed their routinely over the last 6 months due to us being away. It is an unusual year for us. Boise Kennels is a no-frills, get what you pay for boarding kennel. We boarded our dog here for a long weekend on short notice. They were able to accommodate us very quickly and that was much appreciated. Being new to town, we decided to give them a try. I love this place. For a little over $15/night, my dogs are well cared for, fed, and returned bathed. The people who run it know and like dogs and are friendly and helpful. They have lots of space to play with the dogs out back and you can pay for extra playtime for $1/day. The first time I kenneled my dogs there, I paid for swim time and Gus wouldn't go in the pool so they didn't charge me. I thought that was pretty cool, since I have know way of knowing if he swam or not. I also like that they kennel and play the dogs separately (though you can ask to have your dogs together), so there's no chance of an altercation and it's OK to leave intact dogs there. Also, I've never had trouble getting a reservation, since they can fit something like 175 dogs. read more

I've taken my dog to Boise Kennels a couple of times in the past and he seemed to like it. He's been to other kennels where he wouldn't go into the boarding area at all but he doesn't hesitate at all here. The last two times I've boarded him were very last minute as had medical emergencies. They were great about taking him and keeping him for an undetermined amount of time. Every time I called saying it would be a couple more days they assured me it was fine and he was well taken care of. When I picked him up he was nice and clean and his goofy self. I just left Boise Kennels off State and 36th in Boise. I entered with a mask and was assaulted by the odor of animal waste. The tour began with mounds of wet towels in a corner, followed by more odor and out dated and dirty kennels. The small dogs no not have access to the outside. They have to be taken out. There were 3 people working, so many dogs, and ONLY ONE dog was outside at my time of visit. I could not finish the tour. It was so very upsetting. Please SERIOUSLY consider NEVER taking your animal to Boise Kennels. read more

My dog lily just stayed here and I was worried at first. She is a rescue and I didn't know how she would react going to a kennel. She actually walked in there, not forced, no yelping no nothing. 4 days later we pick her up and she's happy to see us but not afraid, not begging to leave. She smells like cedar chips and is happy to be home but not scared to have been gone. I look forward to using them again next week. My only comment would be I left two bones and a blanket and I don't think she had them with her in the kennel. They might now allow bonds though I didn't ask. The owners were pleasant and were swift and efficient at in-take and for the return of our dog at pick-up. They did give her a bath as requested. She smelled great. I made a reservation on-line and they were speedy in getting me my confirmation. They do appear to be dog-oriented and have worked on the dog-show circuit. However, the facilities themselves were older and definitely not the best. Given the excellent presentation of their website, I had expected a really modern and top-notch facility. The facility was outdated and just so-so. The outdoor cat play area looked a bit run-down and the outdoor dog kennel area looked kind of cobbled together. I also have concerns about how big each kennel is for the individual dog or cat. The building is not very big at all and yet they state that they have room for well over 100 pets. I was never allowed past the main office so I cannot confirm the individual kennel size but given the outside dimensions of the building, the space per pet can't be all that much. read more

My dog's digestive system has never been off after his stays, so they must provide good-quality food (I typically feed my dog Iams). I really loved this boarding place. I needed to go on a last minute trip to San Francisco and the owner was able to meet me early on a Wednesday morning before they opened to get my dog in. They were very accommodating and filling out paper work is really quick. I called 2 days after to see how she was doing and they told me all about her eating habits and how well she was playing with other dogs. If you care about dogs as much as I do then you know this information is greatly appreciated when someone is looking after your dog. I felt like they really do care about these dogs as much As I care about my own. It was really great to get that confirmation that my dog was well and happy. They took really great care of my dog and they called me to confirm when I was going to pick her up the next day so they could give her a complimentary bath before I saw her. When I saw her she was very clean and smelled great. The only reason I gave 4/5 stars is that they lack surveillance cameras so I can't check on my dog during the day. There's not a another place in Boise that I'd take our pup. In the past we've struck out in regards to boarding and we heard about BK through a friend so we thought why not. At first we were skeptical about leaving him (since we've had bad luck with other boarding facilities in the area) but the staff was so friendly and reassuring about everything. We were gone for 6 days and we had asked for additional playtime each day. When we got back they let him have that extra playtime and they also gave him a much needed bath at no additional charge! They were also very straight forward about his stay and let us know how they handled a few unfriendly encounters. My dog stayed for a day here a couple of weeks ago for the first and last time. Upon arriving, the young folks working the front were very pleasant - which is why they get one star. However, upon bringing my dog into the facility they didn't want to let me walk back to see where he would be staying (now I know why). I asked and they allowed me to stand at the door and look but I followed them back anyways. The kennels were horrendous, and not because of the age, because of the lack of care of them. It smelled SO strongly of ammonia and feces and wet dog. The kennel they wanted to keep him in was dirty and had another dog that usually was in there - my guess is it wasn't cleaned before he was put in there due to how he was when I picked him up. My worries were somewhat settled when they said once the doors were opened the smell would subside and his kennel would be cleaned prior to him going in. There is absolutely no way this was the case. When I picked him up, he smelled SO strongly of urine, it was as if he bathed in it. Keep in mind, the dog is 100% potty training and sleeps inside and is kenneled at home frequently when we do errands without any accidents. His blanket also smelled of urine. When I picked him up, he was very mopey and not very happy. I had to bathe him twice to get the urine smell off him. Fast forward to a week later - he has kennel cough and he had his bordetella shot weeks before his stay. He hasn't been in contact with any other dogs since I picked him up so this was the only way he contracted it. I warn folks not to leave their dogs here as the way they care for the facility is a direct reflection on how they care for their doggy guests. read more
