So there we were, my wife and I, driving through North Carolina when we discovered these fast food joints we don't have here on the West Coast. Hardee's, the Waffle House, and Bojangles'. We quickly dismissed Hardee's since it seems to be a rebranded Carl's Jr. We'd filled up on donuts for breakfast and weren't really feeling like packing in more carbs at the Waffle House. And so we were left with Bojangles'--which turned out to be a good thing. We grabbed two combos with a couple of sauces. Pretty pleased with the rich flavors and more than satisfying size of the combos. More food than either of us could eat. You could do worse if you're looking for some good old fashioned Southern food.

How does a chicken joint run out of chicken? Twice in two weeks time. Your supply system sucks. Do something about this!

One half feels historic and the other half feels modern with the artwork, mirrors, and finishes. The lighting is dim but you can still read the menu. It wasn't busy while I was there but quiet enough I couldn't hear other conversations. Initially the host wanted to seat me at the bar but when I declined, gave me a seat near the open kitchen. My waitress was friendly and helped me select the strawberry blonde to go with the strawberry salad. This was smaller than expected and just one or two strawberries. There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time.

The staff that we had encounters with were friendly and stayed busy. The atmosphere is comfortable and home feeling. My wife that had the pork enjoyed the plate. Said it was fresh and hot. I had the shrimp plate with fries, Mac, and hush puppies. The shrimp seemed as if it is definitely frozen for a bit but still tasted ok and was breaded decent. The fries were fries you'd get at a store. The Mac and hush puppies were hot and fresh. I gave four stars because their salt and pepper shakers got some humidity and didn't work. This was throughout the restaurant. An employee was helpful and gave us one that worked some. The floor also appeared to be a bit slippery and sticky and I would guess it's whatever they use to clean with. In the end of it all, I'll be back to get more.

The interior has tables and tables to seat maybe 40-50 folks in total. It was rainy and windy due to Tropical Storm Debby but the restaurant was still pretty busy. The guy at the register was friendly and patient as I looked over the menu boards. I ordered a bacon-wrapped hot dog with ketchup and mustard and a side of mac and cheese. The food was ready quickly and brought out to my table. Customers continued to come in despite the rain so I know this place must be a community favorite. The hot dog was good. Bacon could have been a bit crispier in parts and I think they could have been a bit more generous with the ketchup and mustard. The mac and cheese was pretty tasty too. Service was great and that took this place to 4 stars. I'd be interested to return to try some of their other offerings.
