3.5 stars. It's been a while since I've tried a new Indian place in Austin. Here's one for my friends in case looking for a new place to try. We decided to stop by Bombay Dhaba for a quick bite before a play at UT theater, courtesy of Yelp. Since this was the first time, we stuck with the basics; Samosa & Paneer tikka masala. Turned out to be a good decision. Initial reaction was positive as parking was easy and they have a nice seating area with cute lighting. There are also other few food trucks in the area so you can go with a group. Service was quick. The prices are very reasonable and portions are pretty big for that. I liked the 3pc Samosa. Chutneys seen store bought. The paneer tikka masala came with rice, but tasted more like ready to eat paneer makhni (buttery tomato sauce). Tikka masala is ideally made by grilling marinated meat or paneer over charcoal then sautéd with buttery, onion+tomato gravy. We also ordered the jalapeño cheese roti - which was expectedly sinful and tasty. However, seemed it was an improvised version of the frozen layered parathas with jalapeño & cheese. Nevertheless, ideal expectations aside, this is a great value place for a quick lunch or take away. Don't hesitate to try. read more

Came here for lunch and had the Mixed Plate - the portion sizes are very generous for the price. The rest of the food, per Austin Indian food standards, was decent. If comparing to Houston Indian food, I'd probably knock off a star. Samosas were excellent and in the future, I can see myself coming back just to pick up a few of those. Chicken Tikka was very good, as were the rotis/rice they also gave. The only thing I probably wouldn't order again is the Saag Paneer, simply because it wasn't similar to traditional saag paneer I like, it was different in texture and taste. Possibly more of a South Indian take on it. Not bad in taste though. I'd also recommend they get fresh(er) chutney for the samosas. Raita was good, but could use some salt. Overall, great experience, and the food is packed in a way that's easy to eat there or take home. Definitely stop by to pick up some samosas! read more

HANDS DOWN THE ABSOLUTE BEST SAMOSA YOU WILL EVER HAVE! (And being from Houston, I've had a lot of restaurant and homemade samosas.) Bombay Dhaba is the best Indian food I've ever had. It's comparatively cheap and the portions are generous (especially in a dish like the Chicken 65). If you call in, your order is ready when you get there. Plus he has lunch specials. We go here once a week and don't get tired of it either. Tip: his chicken tikka masala is already delicious but if you want to add to the transcendence, ask him to add some paneer to it. I got the chicken tiki masala and it was okay. I ordered and the guy immediately handed me a bag so I wondered how long it had been sitting there. I also had asked for zero spice and it was very spicy. Overall, it was convenient but I paid 13 dollars for this before tip. Probably won't go back but glad I tried it. Being an Indian, the last place I expect to be racially abused is at an Indian food place! Seriously, the guy called me an "Indian a**hole" over the phone! Tldr: very avg food, extremely rude, racist, and confrontational staff. I ordered through Mr. Delivery (which is awesome!) my order arrived without the breads I had ordered, I called the driver back and he said this is all he got from the food truck. So I called Bombay Dhaba and ask if the driver forgot part of the order there, and the guy yells back at me "why are you calling me!? Did you call me before you ordered with Mr. Delivery!?" I told him that he's being extremely rude and that I'm merely asking him if the driver left part of the order there. I'm usually a very calm person, so I tried to ignore his tone and requested him to calm down and once again restated that I'm only trying to confirm if the driver picked up the complete order. But the guy starts yelling at me again! I tried again but to no avail. I finally lost my cool and told him to screw off and disconnected the phone. I wish that were the end of it! The guy calls me back and starts cussing me out! Tells me I'm an "Indian a**hole" and that he knows my name and number (whatever that implies). He goes on to send me text messages after I stopped taking his calls! I'm completely at a loss for words at this point, I mean all I wanted was a nice Indian meal, which I didn't get and was now being called all sorts of names for merely asking if my food was still there. Mr. Delivery was extremely apologetic about the situation and assured me that they will take up the matter with the restaurant management. I also received a refund for the things I didn't receive, as well as a $10 credit. In the end, this was the worst dinner experience I've had in my life! The one thing I'm thankful for is that the food was extremely average. Being a foodie the last thing I'd want is to WANT to go back to this place!! read more

Bombay Dhaba serves some of the best Indian food I've ever had. The fact that it's also affordable is icing on the cake. Mr. Bombay Dhaba, please see your amazing reviews as a testament to how you're doing everything right and never, ever change. It's a food truck with a covered area over a few red picnic tables, which is nice as there's shade. The address listed on Yelp is correct, but the Yelp map location is wrong. I'd recommend entering the address on Google Maps. We ordered: samosas, lamb vindaloo (spicy), chana masala (mild), and lamb curry (spicy). It was all scrumptious. The samosas and lamb vindaloo were especially worthy of praise. The samosas were fresh, crispy, and flaky. When you bite in, the crunch of the shell releases fragrant steam (hot hot!) and the filling is so flavorful. The filling is generous, yet not dense with just the right balance of spices. Dare I say - best samosas I've ever had? Maybe it's been a while since I've lived in Toronto - the mecca of Indian food in North America, but Bombay Dhaba's samosas can compete! The tamarind sauce is the other key area of my samosa assessment and the one here was that perfect sweet and tangy complement for the savory filling. Basically, order the samosas unless you want to live the rest of your life riddled with regrets. The lamb vindaloo trumped the lamb curry, although I wouldn't pass up the lamb curry either. The night before we got takeout at a nearby Indian restaurant on South Congress, their lamb vindaloo cost $15, contained 5 pieces of lamb and a whopping TWO pieces of potato (not an exaggeration). Bombay Dhaba's $10.99 lamb vindaloo was not only much more generous and a much better value, it was also exponentially more delicious. Tons of potato AND tons of lamb, so it wasn't like they were using potatoes as a filler and skimping on the lamb. The vindaloo sauce itself was indeed the best I've ever had. Fresh, spicy, and with a nice hit of acid to help with the heat. You could see the fresh herbs, chilis, and even some remnants of tomato. Their vindaloo was so good that I dumped some rice into the container to make sure I soaked up all the sauce. I need to stop writing this review as it's making me very hungry and sad seeing how I live 1300 miles away from Bombay Dhaba. I'll end by saying their chana masala was also wonderful and a great pairing with the spice of the vindaloo. And a plea: Bombay Dhaba, can you please move to Durham, NC? read more

Food/Price ratio is insane. This guy really hooks you up with the portions. The owner of the food truck is very amicable and so genuine it makes me happy seeing him enjoy his work. I'm not sure what authentic Indian food tastes like but this is what I would imagine it to be. The curries aren't too spicy and they have lots of flavor. The rice is always so perfect, idk how they do it. I've had everything on the menu including the Tandoori chicken. That took a while to come out but man was it worth it. This afternoon I read Ashish A.'s review and thought "Well, that's sort-of on my way home", and decided to stop there. There were a couple of people before me, but I soon ordered pakora, garlic naan, aloo gobi, and lamb biryani to bring home. When he handed me the pakora, he told me to leave the top open or it'd get soggy. So, I'm in my truck, with an open bag of great-smelling pakora beside me. I munched it all way home (about 10-15 minutes). When I got home I saw that I hadn't even eaten half of it. The naan was the size of a 33 1/3 album, and perfect, with lots of garlic. The biryani was HUGE and wonderful. Lots of tender lamb. I ate all I could, and there's easily enough there for at least another 2 meals. And a midnight snack. The aloo gobi was in a pint-sized container and packed full of cauliflower and potatoes. Everything came with containers of a couple different chutneys, and the appropriate sauces and yogurt you'd get in a sit-down restaurant. I told the guy medium spice, but I could have handled it a little more spicy. Next time I'll ask for more. And yes, there'll be a next time. The amount was $28 something, and the amount of food would easily feed 3 or 4 hungry people. I like Clay Pit, Asiana, Tarka, and other Indian places; some northern India friends of mine like Masala Wok (kind of Indian with a Chinese influence) and I like it too. But Bombay Dhaba was easily as good as any of them. If I was this guy's business manager I'd tell him to reduce serving sizes (or increase prices), but as a customer I'll keep my mouth shut. read more

Great food! I got the lunch mix plate and there is no way I can eat all of it *and* the super crunchy on the outside/fluffy on the inside samosas, but I am going to try! Today the mix plate was chicken masala, saag paneer and a lentil curry that was tasty but I cannot name. :) The naan was *very* fresh and I nearly lost my mind driving back to the office to get into the bag and eat it - smells *wonderful*. Masala was super flavourful and the saag was tasty. Samosas have a little kick! Everything on both lunch and dinner menu this week is half priced to promote their new location (now at 1207 S 1st, in the trailer park just north of the Torchy's one), and even without the awesome deal, it's all very affordable. On our first visit, Reddy, the owner I believe, showed us how everything is made, he extended such hospitality as if we were special guests. Yeah I'm a fan. Went here this past Friday around like 8 pm. There we re about 4 other food trucks there (southern bbq, thai, another middle eastern that was closed and one more i forget) Anyways the indian place has about 4 community tables setup with lights which is pretty sweet. It's a quiet area and clean. The food is worth it. I got the lam biryani, garlic naan, 2 masala chaos and samosa. IT is SO good pricing for what it's worth. I mean $!0 for biryani, $2 for naan, $2 for each chai and $3 for 2 samosas. And the guy is so nice, he gave me an extra samosa and a small side of raita and chicken curry with my naan and i didn't realize until i got home. The amount of biryani rice you get is ALOT. i can eat a lot, but this was good for like 3 people if not 4 (depends on how much you can eat). And the food was delicious, the naan was so good. The masala chai was ok, a little too strong and not the way i like it. so i probably wouldn't get that next time. But great indian food FOR A FOOD TRUCK. Bombay Dhaba is what a good food trailer should be. An ethnic food truck bringing huge portions at a great price without compromising quality of taste. I got the "chicken kati roll" for lunch which is technically listed under the appetizers. It is DEFINITELY not a starter, weighing in at twice as big as most wraps I've ever eaten. Did I mention this chicken roll is only $4.99? WOW, this was a huge portion. The wrap was stuffed, STUFFED with chicken. The sauce mixed with the chicken (I believe it is their Chicken66 inside the roll) was flavorful and a bit spicy with some nice bits of potato in it. Freshly made after I ordered. So good. We were in Austin for a SXSW event and were on our way back to the Hyatt Lost Pines when we decided we better eat something. We found this food truck park and stopped. I ordered the Lamb Biryani and it was so good!! I'm glad my son shared it with me because it was enough for 3 people really. The flavors were spot on and they even gave us extra sauce and yogurt to cool it down a bit (although I'm sure it's not spicy for most people, I'm just a light weight). Every. damn. week. I eat here because I fortunately (or maybe unfortunately) live down the street and it's the best Indian food that I've had so far in Austin. I'm typically a big advocate of Indian lunch buffets so that I can get the most bang for my buck and because Indian food is typically expensive outside of that, but the food is reasonably priced and, as I mentioned, awesome. I also like that the people who work here always ask what spice level you want your food to be. My go-to's are goat curry, lamb curry, lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer and veg korma - all good. But above all, the garlic naan is always a must. read more

Indian cuisine and food trucks--what a happy marriage. After trying Bombay Dhaba for the first time, I kept coming back for more. The first time I had it, I got a lunch combo with the chicken tikka masala. It was great, but a little too much on the tomato side from how I liked mine. However, I was blown away by the portion of it all. Along with my order of chicken tikka masala, we were also given another curry side. We thought it was a mistake at first, but the curry side was deliciously savor and our favorite out of our order. When I came back again, it was dinner time so the lunch specials were over. I tried the chicken biryani, and when I got it, I never looked back. The container felt like a size of a newborn child--so much that I almost dropped it. Again, it came with the delicious side I was secretly wishing for. The biryani was flavored with ACTUAL spices where you can see it in the dish. Garnished with some fresh cilantro, the dish was not only very generous with the protein, but flavored so well. I would say that Bombay Dhaba would be my favorite Indian joint in Austin. read more

One of my favorite Indian spots in Austin. Their food is authentic (I'm not from India but it sure does taste pretty damn authentic) and it is really well flavored. Let me start this review by saying the guy who is behind the window is super cool. He is always nice and offers me free water and other small goodies. Their gram masala, chicken masala and everything else I've had here is awesome. I'm a weirdo when it comes to spicy food, I like my food to basically set my mouth on fire. This guy understands when I say I want my food Indian spicy, what that means. The last thing that makes this place amazing is the amount of food they give you. This is the BEST deal in Austin. For around 9$ you get two different kind of curries, rice, a huge piece of naan, a desert and who knows what else he throws in there.
