I've been here a few times with my friends. The Korean double-fried chicken drumsticks and wings are good, but my favorite is their bulgogi (beef) bibimbap $13.99. The bibimbap is cooked in a stone bowl so the rice, fried egg, bulgogi beef, and the vegetables are kept very hard, throughout the meal. My friends and I got the large combo chicken deal which comes with 15 wings and 8 drumsticks I believe as well as a side order of the spicy rice cakes. The chicken had two flavors (spicy or a soy garlic). Both were very tasty and crispy with a satisfying crunch without being too heavy. The spicy rice cakes, though massive in portion, was disappointing. It felt as though they just microwaved the plate and threw everything together. Coming back from a delicious meal at this Harvard Square location. This was my first time here. Although they are renovating, it's a nice change of location and atmosphere. I'm glad I came here because there was no wait time which is what you'll NEVER find at the Allston location. I was seated right away at prime time dinner time 7pm. We ordered garlic soy chicken (always a go-to) but tonight I also ordered Mandu-guk soup. That broth is to die for. I drank all my broth and didn't finish any of my dumplings so I took it home! But it's so warm and huge!! It's the size of two people's faces. You can definitely share this bowl of soup with friends. This place was very fast paced! You sit down, order, get your food and the check is nicely sitting there for you to pay up. Whoa. Our server was polite though (: Food: Always have to have those crispy delicious soy garlic chicken wings! It's very consistent to their other Bonchon in Allston. So Yum!! Having gone to the Bonchon in Allston multiple times, we were happy to stumble upon this place for lunch while in the Harvard Sq area. In fact, we walked around for over a half hour while we waited for them to open but alas, our Yelper friends are totally right. If you're feeling the Korean hangry pangs, drive the extra minutes to Allston unless you're only getting their wings. Although I didn't try it personally, it got a thumbs up with the soy and ginger wings being the better of the 2 flavorings. The seafood okdal bibimbap that I tried however was a bit bland and not at all what I'm used to when I've ordered it in other places. It needed an unusual amount of the red chili sauce for it to have any flavor. Also be prepared that this location doesn't have a sushi bar either. Their menu is much more limited. I've been going to bonchon in Allston for years now but I was in the area and decided to stop by here. I had the kimchi jigae, my friends had the chicken, and my girlfriend had the Galbi. The kimchi jigae was a lot smaller than the Allston location but the flavors were somewhat comparable, but for the same price I could have gotten twice the portion.. The chicken did not taste, look nearly as good, or crispy as the other location. The Galbi quality did not live up to the price tag and the marinade was very salty. The food here is comparable to the Allston location but this place is super dingy! The booths were scratched up and the bathroom was falling apart. Half of the menu items were X'ed out because they weren't available anymore. After some point, maybe the restaurant should consider ordering new menus. Other than the food was as expected. I don't think you can get better Korean fried wings in Boston than from Bonchon. It had been a while since I last had it and enjoyed that they had a lunch special. I have been a big fan of Bonchon for many years and enjoyed providing them my business. Today I decided to try the soy garlic boneless wings and ordered two boxes. I was not happy with what was provided. Maybe someone made a mistake in preparation but the wings were too salty, little to no sauce (maybe they forgot a step) and worst of all DRY. This was nothing like the wings I have gotten in the past and think someone probably just messed up my order as I typically give Bonchon the benefit of the doubt. If I was rating this location just on food & service it would easily be 5 stars. The food is always great (full disclosure I've only had the wings/strips and the dumplings the 10x I've eaten at various BonChons). The service is always very good. Very friendly and always there when you need a refill or to just see to your needs. The problem with this specific location is that it's filthy. As soon as you take the escalator down - there is lots of crap on the floor and around the entrance. The restaurant itself looks beat up and the ambience just feels chaotic and unkept. I went to Bonchon with a very large group (~25 people) and found that the service could use improvement, but the food was pretty good. We had to wait several minutes after our official reservation time before we could be let in. I was surprised to find that we were served on pretty low-quality tableware, like plastic Solo cups and paper plates. They also took a really long time to bring some people's food, but that may have been a result of us having such a large group. Additionally, the location is not that great, being in a somewhat dingy basement that isn't the nicest on the eyes. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the food - I got the Bugolgi beef dish and found the meat very tender and juicy. If you are vegetarian, though, which was the case for some members of our group, beware that there are very limited options. Let me preface this by saying that I just spent 10 days in Seoul, so this review probably has some unfairness to it. I came here with a friend. First off, the restaurant was hot. I'm not sure if they had a/c or not, but it was warm. The service was great. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Going through the menu, I was saddened by no Korean BBQ. There is a post it covering that portion of the menu, although you can see that the tables are designed for it. We got soondubu, which turned out to be pretty good. We also ordered fried rice fritters. I expected some sort of fritter, but it was just the tteok that was battered in something and fried. It wasn't bad, I just expected something else. DIRTY, UNRELIABLE, UNPROFESSIONAL. Ordered and prepaid for a large order of wings for a 6 pm networking event. I took care of this the night before. Pick up time was set for 5:30. I drove to Cambridge to pick up the order at the appointed time and was told that I had to wait 15 minutes. I waited 15 minutes and checked back with them and was told that my order hadn't been started and that it would be 50 minutes. At this point, it was 5:50 and I was late for the event. When I asked to cancel my order, a server told me I couldn't get my money back because it was a large order. She asked me to come back later. When I asked to speak to management, she told me that the manager was "out," with no further explanation. They denied me a refund, even though they hadn't started the order. Ridiculous. So, I asked them to deliver the order--the least they could do--and was told that I'd still have to pay for delivery and tip the driver. I've called the establishment five times now, and they haven't picked up. The management at this place is utterly incompetent and has no business running a franchise. They leave their vegetables and boxes of oil in the hallway outside of the restaurant; the bathrooms have no paper towels, just loose rolls of toilet paper; the tables are greasy; and the servers manage the restaurant. Their cooks speak very limited English (and that's being generous), so it's no wonder why the staff is neurotic, stressed and fragmented--just eating there is stressful. Would NOT recommend this place to any self-respecting patron. This location does not deserve business until they make some serious changes. Very disappointed. read more

Bonchon Chicken in Harvard Square is a good place to eat and it's popular with the students from Harvard and Lesley University (and probably Tufts). One thing that could be improved is definitely the decor. Granted, the building has been around for a while, I think, but the place could use better lighting and a repaint. Other than that, the Korean chicken is excellent. You do get a choice of two flavors: spicy (hot) and soy garlic. My family and I ordered the hot and it was very, very spicy, so be careful if you don't like extremely spicy food. They do give you cole slaw and radish as starters and eating the radish helps tone down the spiciness of the chicken. They changed the strip recipe entirely! Nothing wrong with this restaurant in particular, but I was so disappointed after living somewhere without a bonchon, finally being able to go back to my weekly bonchon strips after I moved to Boston recently. Besides the minor inconvenience of a slight price increase (inflation, what you gunna do), I was very disappointed to see the strips had been entirely changed! Instead of what used to be thin strips of breast meat, cut in random shapes (good surface area), now it's just tiny little sticks of breast meat covered in way too much breading and sauce. Supply chain issue or not...I have no reason to go back to bonchon after several years of weekly/monthly visits to what was formerly my favorite fried chicken place, . I really hope this wasn't a decision made to try to pinch every last penny out of a dish, it always backfires on chains as they grow and cut corners. Bring back the old strips! Clarification: The Cambridge location did nothing wrong, staff was friendly. I would give Bonchon 4.5. Of all the Korean chicken places in Boston, I would say Bonchon is a solid option. Food I've tried: - In general, I would go for the bone-full rather than the bone-less option, as I find the bone-full chickens to be more moist. Bonchon's chicken batter isn't super thick (like you would expect at other Korean chicken places) but the skin is still crispy and well seasoned. The price varies depending on how much chicken you want ($14 - 10 pieces, $25 - 20 pieces, $35 - 30 pieces). In terms of the flavor options, the spicy is indeed very spicy and I have a pretty high spice tolerance. If you are looking to mix and match, I would get 1/3 SPICY and 2/3 SOY GARLIC. The spicy is pretty much is initial sweetness, replaced by pure fire on the tongue. The soy garlic has a slight touch of sweetness in the flavor as well. The radish and coleslaw that comes with the chicken is pretty standard in terms of flavor. - EDAMAME ($6): tastes like edamame, no surprises there. - SHRIMP SHUMAI ($9): tastes like shrimp shumai you can buy at any grocery store. So average in taste, and I only get this if I come as a group and we want to munch on something while we wait for the chicken. - TTEOKBOKKI ($15): pretty average, for an average price. Atmosphere: - The lighting is one of those dim atmospheres. - During peak times it can get pretty crowded, and it has a lively vibe. Service: - The staff is friendly. She was very short and rude and said that they were very busy and hung up on me. 1 star for rudeness and taking so long to deliver my order at a delivery fee that is frankly too high. I've been to this Bonchon spot probably ~10 times over the last several years. Food: Bonchon is basically known for one thing, and one thing alone: Korean fried chicken. Their fried chicken comes in two flavors -- spicy and soy garlic -- both of which are super tasty. Everything else they offer (bibimbap, japchae, etc.) can be bought, at higher quality, for the same/lower price at any of the many Korean restaurants in Boston (Kimchi Kitchen, Kaju, etc.). Ambiance: The atmosphere surrounding this spot in particular has really gone downhill in the last couple of years, as the building Bonchon is hosted in has undergone extensive construction (and many of the other businesses in the building, such as Wagamama and Kaju, have moved out). Bonchon's ambiance itself is still quite nice, though it feels a little more frayed than in years past. Overall, if you're going to Bonchon, you're going for the chicken, which is solid as ever. I consider myself a true champion of Korean fried chicken, both in the sense of an advocate and as a victor. Having dined at multiple venues, and not all of the Bon Chon brand, and subsequently introducing dozens of friends and colleagues to the glory of this type of chicken, the title of advocate I believe is well deserved, but the victor business needs some s'plainin'. In short, one venue in particular, Boka, which serves Bon Chon in NY, has a happy hour special that is AYCE and AYCD. I am undefeated. You may refer to that review for details. TABLE / BON CHON / CAMBRIDGE, MA Me: Can I get the spicy pork bi bim bap, and 10 piece half and half? Waiter: Oh... you cannot get half and half with 10 piece, you have to pick one. Me: But if I order the 20 piece I can get half and half? Waiter: Yes. Me: Ok, 20 half and half. Waiter: Sure. You can get the leftovers to go if you don't finish. I use Boka as the gold standard, not only for their happy hour, but also because their chicken is amazing. Most Bon Chon is good to excellent, but Boka's is life changing. The chicken at this Cambridge venue is excellent. The flavor is plentiful, the skin is crispy, and the meat is tender, with all of the said qualities being a bit less so than at Boka's - but don't let that deter you! As far as drinks, they do not yet have their liquor license. To make up for it, they have unlimited refills on soda. Where they stand out, however, is in service. All the staff members are attentive and polite, as per the industry standard, but they are all extra nice and super enthusiastic. I got the impression that they were all happy to work there and talk to patrons. Additionally, my server pretty much met every Asian stereo-type, from his trendy hair style, to his anime facial expressions, to the way he literally ninja jumped over (empty) tables and benches to help a coworker fix something. +1. Seating-wise, they can accommodate both large and small parties. The table dividers are removable, so they can arrange seating as needed. Soondubu jiggae ($12.95) I order is fiery and complex - loaded with chunks of tofu and plenty of beef - a delicious rendition. Tofu & Kimchi Da Eji Bulgogi ($15.95) is thin sliced pork with gochukang (fiery yet sweet chili sauce) served with thick slices of tofu. Galbi tang ($13.95) has a rich broth. I was walking by the BonChon near campus & was thrilled to learn they have an 8-piece chicken strip lunch special for $7.95! Half & half gets you soy garlic (not overpowering--yay!) & spicy (my lips were on fi-yah...like straight sriracha on these bad boys!) Food: I generally prefer Cambridge over Allston cause of the Al Jigae. Allston has the Budae Jigae if I remember as a substitute. Chicken seems more fresh and tastier here and for Korean chicken, it's tasty. Crispy skin, juicy meat, and if you're adventurous, you can get the spicy flavor to push you. I think a medium combo with a soup dish complements 2-3 people perfectly. They do provide free radish and coleslaw which helps offset the heavy flavors. Service: Compared to Allston, much better. It might be because it's a smaller space, but the food seems to come out a little quicker and in better succession. I recently went to Allston and we ordered a large combo, Budae Jigae, and Korean pancakes (jeon). We got the appetizer (jeon) last and the Jigae didn't come out till half way through our chicken. It threw the meal off and is probably why I hesitate to visit that spot versus the others. Parking: Definitely a plus for Allston. There are viable meter spots and free parking a block down at the back lot (if you're fortunate to find a spot). At Cambridge, it's best to just pay for a garage. My friend treated me to a birthday lunch here, and ohhhh it was a happy birthday indeed. Let me list the wonders. - Mandu gui: This means "pan fried pork dumplings." Do I really need to say anything else? I meannnn it's fried pork. - Takoyaki: I'm a sucker for anything octopus, so I had to try the octopus dumplings. They weren't what I was expecting texture wise -- they were really creamy inside, with bits of octopus mixed in. The bonito flakes on top were also a really nice touch. If you're into interesting textures and flavors, you'll enjoy them. If that sort of food isn't your speed, I would say pass on the takoyaki. All that being said, I really liked 'em. - The chicken: Mercy. How can I explain the bombness of this chicken? First of all, the lunch special is only $7.95. For that price, it's hard for me to think of a better lunch in the neighborhood (although we all know how much I love my Grendel's french dip). I got half with the hot sauce and half with the soy garlic. Now, I usually don't believe in savoring food all slowlike. If I catch you doing it, I'm likely to call you out ("Oh what, you think you're BETTER than me???"). However, I lingered over every bite of those perfectly crispy, moist wings and drums. TL;DR: no AC. Fans only. NYC Bon chon was better. :( So the boy and I were really excited to go eat at Bon Chon since our last experience with it in NYC was uh-maaaazing. Unfortunately this location was a little bit of a let down. We ordered a small order of soy garlic drumsticks (5 pcs). The chicken was ok/juicy, and maybe it was the lack of AC that kind of killed the mood for us? We also ordered the okdal bibimbap. Came out bland and flavorless unless you added a lot of hot sauce. Terrible service. I ordered delivery from here and only got half my order. Called multiple times and no one picked up. After the 10th try, someone finally picked up and told us there was nothing they could do to refund us or offer the rest of my order to me. This is absurd. To the Yelp Universe- I had an underwhelming experience at Bonchon (Cambridge location) last week. Allow me to explain myself. I have high standards for fried meat. Higher for squirrel and possum, but still pretty high for chicken. I was disappointed in my garlic soy strips. Where's the crisp? Korean fried chicken is known and loved for its double-fried crunchy batter. My garlic soy strips were soft, and their centers were chewy. Wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't fully thawed. Plus, what kind of Korean chicken place doesn't serve beer. Cardinal sin. Layout of this place is a little too dungeon-y. Was good, but not as amazing as I thought. Chicken - the breading was great. Definitely worth eating over and over again. The meat was OK. Just not as delicious. Meh. Maybe we had a bad batch. Kimchi Jigae - They added Mushrooms to it, so... I wasn't a fan. I think they should take it out. I prefer the traditional soup. I could definitely taste the mushrooms. However, the other ingredients added were super good. My friends had the cold noodles/the spicy cold noodle. Both were delicious and way better than mine. Just something in them had a nice zing. KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN = the best fried chicken you can get. Way more crispy, and bursting with much more flavor than you've ever experienced. Between the spicy and the soy garlic I always go with the soy garlic. Besides the fried chicken this place is just mediocre hence only 4 stars. Tip: if you have a group of 12 or so you can get a long booth (they take out the separator between the booths) and you can all sit at the same table. read more
