I had the bulgogi dinner. Sizzling hot, with white rice. Ate most of the rice and about half of the steak. It was good. I can't eat a lot of Asian food, but worked out to be a good choice. Supposedly, they are open until 9pm but they decide when they want to close the kitchen. Some days they close it at 8:30 some days it's 8pm. That's not the way restaurants run. You are open until you close the door. Update your business hours if you want to be closed at 8pm. read more

I ordered this food through Uber Eats, who also are complicit on how lousy this food was. It was cold, not at all appetizing. The worst defender is Bonchon, the fried shrimp were almost black. They were so ridiculously overcooked, the chicken was cold and greasy. The coleslaw that they packed in the same bag was warm. Will not order again from this restaurant. It used to be good, it seems the quality is gone downhill quickly. Just a lousy meal. read more

It was missing the essential runny egg and the gochujang was not authentic-it tasted more like a simple hot sauce. The egg "strips" included tasted like they had been cooked earlier , then thrown on (gross). I have never had a reaction to MSG before until I ate this dish, which tells me that a lot was used--as a consequence I literally felt ill well into the evening - no bueno! Atmosphere: Bonchon has always been nearly empty every time we've gone. Clean interior, but camera doesn't eat first here--the lighting is a bit weird. Service: Fast service, food comes out pretty quickly. Servers have always been friendly, but nothing special. Food: Decent if you're specifically looking for Korean fried chicken in the area, but there's definitely better Korean fried chicken out there. The chicken is good at first, but we get tired of it pretty quickly and it lowkey starts to smell like dog food. We'd recommend the soy garlic chicken. Their tteokbokki is probably better than their chicken, and their tonkatsu is pretty solid as well. Overall: Bonchon does not live up to the hype from UNC students. If you want fried chicken, maybe seek elsewhere unless you really want Korean fried chicken. Bonchon is also on the pricier side, which makes the food not really worth it. read more

A solid Korean Fried Chicken Experience. I had a craving for Korean fried chicken and Bonchon has been on my list of places to try in the are so my wife and I decided to give Bonchon a try and see how they stacked up against the local competition. There's not a lot of competition for korean style fried chicken in the area, but there's more than you'd expect. It's a food I love so I'm always eager to try out what's new in the area. Bonchon is a chain restaurant so I was aware of that going in, while that sometimes has it's negative connotations but it also means consistency. After finding parking which can be dicey in this part of town I sat down with my wife and we ordered a few different things. I got the 10 wings order with half spicy and half sweet crunch. They have chicken served in a lot of ways but the korean style fried wings are my favorite. My wife ordered the lunch special of 8 strips combo with half so garlic and half sweet crunch. We also ordered the TAKOYAKI (octopus hush puppies) to start.  I'd recommend skipping the TAKOYAKI. It was fine, but there's more interesting foods on the menu to try. I really loved the wings. They came quicker than other korean fried chicken places in the area. Like super quick. Didn't even have time to finish the appetizer quick. The sweet crunch flavor I loved. It's very sweet. It was a nice contrast to spicy flavor. The spicy flavor has a kick but it's not too much. My wife was not a fan of the sweet crunch at all. So to each their own but it worked for me. The strips she got were not the conventional strips. Here strips is more of a flattened strip into a disc like shape. They are good but not the traditional american chicken fingers most people are probably expecting.  The service was quick as mentioned before, and the staff was super friendly. This location has a lot of space upstairs and downstairs. It's a place where you can take your time if you'd like and good for large groups. I really enjoyed the chicken here and I think it stacks up to the other local places even if a chain. You're getting a consistent product and they have it down to a science.  A must try for fans of korean fried chicken. read more

The staff are very friendly and prompt. I have tried everything on the menu (yes everything) and below are my recommendations: 1. Korean Fried Chicken (duh): Comes in two flavors soy garlic and spicy. Get half and half if your first time. The soy garlic tastes great and the spicy is actually very spicy but very good. 2. Korean tacos: All the appetizers are very overpriced but the korean tacos are definitely worth getting. They chicken is juicy and the sauce on top makes them something to come back for. Stopped in on a whim early this afternoon, after lunch time. It seemed as if they might have been understaffed today, as the one waiter I could see was running like mad but just couldn't keep up, even though the crowd was very light. I picked a spot outside and ordered chicken strips - half garlic and half spicy - a side of seasoned fries, and a coke. The coke took a while to come out and they offered to comp it for my wait. When my food came it was very good. The chicken had the crisp coating you're looking for and excellent flavor. And the seasoned fries are tasty, although I think they may have paired better with the bulgogi sliders. Next time I'll give that a try. read more

Definitely superior to American KFC (since korean friend chicken is commonly also referred to as KFC) - and this is a different rating than what I would have given if I had rated it back in 2018 when I visited with my husband. My first visit wasn't awful - the server was nice, things were brought out quickly despite it being lunchtime and it was much fuller when we left - but the Pork Belly Bao taco things... meh. It was my first time having pork belly and the fat didn't melt away like I'd heard it would. This second experience was vastly different - I placed my order for pickup with DoorDash, and stepped up to a window to pick up my order. There wasn't a staff member there, but they had a helpful note to call if no one was there - there's no ding for that, things are staffed way differently now - but they came out soon after I called and I received my order, which was fries, half spicy and half soy, and some radish kimchi (because I can't be sure they don't use salted shrimp or a fish sauce with shrimp in it for the regular kimchi). Now, this is absolutely what I should have ordered when I came here the first time - the chicken was INCREDIBLY crispy despite the wait time between picking up and consuming the food, the fries were a little soggy but still well seasoned, and the radish kimchi was a nice light break. The spicy was left to me to eat for the most part, and I ate it with gusto - the first piece was pretty spicy, but then my mouth adjusted and I want to figure out how to replicate it at home. I'll definitely order from here again if I'm back up in Chapel Hill! read more

I've eaten at quite a few Bonchons around the country and a lot of them are not very good. This one was surprisingly good as far as their spicy and soy/garlic chicken goes. The spice level was on point as were the flavors. The pickled daikon is the perfect side. Of course the best thing about Korean fried chicken is the candied crust and this did not disappoint there either. The only thing that was disappointing were the side of onion rings. These were clearly frozen onion rings thrown into the fryer. Also, for around $7, we got about 15 onion rings. That's pretty steep for what we got! That's been my experience at every Bonchon I've been to. The chicken is by far the best thing on the menu and the other main dishes and sides are super underwhelming and very expensive for what you get. But, I'm happy to give 4 stars for the chicken at this Bonchon!! read more

I'm disappointed. I think this location still has some work to do because I know that other locations of Bonchon are amazing. I rushed in when Bonchon first opened and had a bad experience, but I chalked it up to the newness and scolded myself for never remembering to give restaurants more time to sort out the glitches. I went for lunch on this visit, and it was packed. We waited for a table, service was slow, and it took a long time to get food. The food we had was mediocre at best (bibimbap and one of the salads). I just went back recently after giving it time to figure things out, and I was still let down. Though it was noon on a weekday, the restaurant was almost empty. No complaints about the service this time. My friend and I both ordered the wings after hearing from others that it was the best choice. She has the strips with spicy sauce, and I had a combo order with the soy garlic. The breading was extremely crispy, and I liked the flavor of my sauce (though it could have had more!). The wing itself, however, was not the best. I've had much better wings (and KFC) at other restaurants in the area. The location on Franklin St. is convenient while I'm on the UNC campus, but otherwise it would be a hassle to find parking and not somewhere I would get takeout. The inside of the restaurant is nice enough, though a bit dark. I do like that they have lunch specials. Unless someone I'm dining with really wants to return, I probably won't come back. read more

I'm only upset that I just heard Bonchon has been here in N.C. since January. I don't know any other asian flavored wings better than Korean style. Bonchon is my all time favorite! I do hope they build another one somewhere in Raleigh, Wilmington, or Cary. This location is a good one, but only if you're a student at UNC. I'll probably come by again, and definitely before the semester starts. The customer service was good, could've been better because we had a party of 6.5 (half because we had a baby present.) Their sweet tea was not the greatest, it had a weird taste to it and I still give this place 5 stars because the wings! The price isn't bad either. I know if i was a student at UNC, I'd be here all day! The ambiance is comforting, its not upscale nor cheap. Nice enough for a family, and good places to stroll after. I really enjoyed my meal at Bonchon! We got the garlic + soy potstickers and the chicken katsu. Both were delicious, and just the right amount of flavor and spice (definitely not mild, glad we didn't get them any spicier). The service was good and food came quickly. My main issue is with the prices. Even most of the appetizers are over $10 and the volume of food for the chicken katsu entree just wasn't enough for the price. Two of us (small women) split the chicken katsu and the potstickers, ate pretty much all of it. We were satiated but not full and didn't have any leftovers. I would love to try the bulgogi, but at $17, I don't think that's going to happen. Finally, it said online that there was lunch pricing for the day/time we went (Sunday from 12-3pm) but when we got to the restaurant there was not, only the standard more expensive pricing. I did take note that it looked like they had a lot of cocktails for a good price ($6!), so maybe I'll come back and try those. read more

People don't realize how special it is to have a "Bonchon" in the triangle. Over the years, I've had the chance to dine at this franchise through my travels in larger cities like LA, Washington D.C. and San Fran. This is by far some of the best KFC in the nation. It's consistent and likes​ nothing else. It blows away fried chicken chains. Although​ the restaurant can vary by size, it's consistent for the most part. The unique side items compliment​ the crispy fried chicken. The price point can be a bit high but for the quality, can't really complain. This is a great addition to the food scene here in the triangle. The shop is tucked away at towards the end of Franklin St. but it's worth making a stop. I enjoy how spacious it is! Also, it's not that hard to find parking since it's on the corner end of the street. Can't wait to stop in again! read more

I frequent this establishment on a near-weekly basis, enjoying pretty much everything on their menu. My favorites include the 5-drumstick set, their full variety of Korean-inspired fried rice, and their bulgogi tacos. All of these are simply to die for! This Bonchon is nice! I enjoy getting their food for takeout. They've got a nice little pick-up window right now during COVID. I've had Bonchon in NYC as well as DC, so one ends up comparing subconsciously. I would say this is a solid choice for Korean fried chicken (KFC) if you are craving it! We always order half spicy and half soy garlic, of which I tend to eat more of the latter. They are delicious! I love the thicker, crispy batter. If you can't eat right away, I'd advise putting in an air fryer if you can to crisp it back up. I love that they do include a little container of pickled radishes on the side- so refreshing! Well I am korean and when I heard of this place- I needed to try it. Price: average Food: I'm impressed. It's definitely kfc(korean fried chicken). Flavor is there- original(soy flavor) and the spicy flavor. It's crunchy and saucy outside and tender juicy inside. I DO NOT recommend ttuk bbok gi (spicy rice cakes). It. Is. Not. Good. This place is a wonderful addition to the Korean Fried Chicken places in the RTP. For comparison, I've tried both M Kokko and H mart KFC. While the KFC at M Kokko is better than Bonchon Chicken because it's crispier, you also get a lot more at Bonchon. H mart KFC (after two tries) still lack greatly in crispiness and flavor compared to both Bonchon and M Kokko. Still haven't tried Soo cafe, so I can't make a comparison there. The service is quite good, especially since I tend to get there a little early for dinner. There's also a bar and several large screen for watching sports if you're into that. In short, this is a great place to hang out for some drinks, and KFC always goes perfectly with drinks! Highly recommend this place. read more

Our family loves the Soy Garlic Korean Fried Chicken! The Bibimbap was good. I'm not used to the eggs being prepared the way they do but it works. Not a fan of the Cole slaw, pickled radishes or fries. We definitely will be back for chicken, just hold the sides. read more

I was so excited for bonchon to open because I love their fried chicken. I've been to this location twice now and both times I was disappointed with their chicken. First time we ordered the combo medium half and half and the sauce for the spicy chicken tasted pretty good but the soy garlic was way too salty. The skin was overwhelming, and for some of the pieces the fried portion was all I could taste (along with the oil?!?). I love the crunchy batter but this was a bit too much. Second time I went we ordered chicken tenders. First off there was barely any sauce on the chicken. We asked the server for more because some pieces didn't even have the sauce on it but the server said she wasn't allowed to give us more sauce. lesbehonest.. Korean fried chicken is about the sauce so I was v. v. unhappy. Getting over that initial disappointment I bit into the chicken to be, yet again, disappointed. The chicken was incredibly dry. My friend ordered a salmon dish as well and all he could say was the taste was interesting and not worth what he paid for. Interior. They have ample seating (2 floors). The walls are red and seats were black matching the logo design. I felt like they could've filled that area somehow to make it feel a little more cozier. I bumped up a star because both times I was here the servers were super nice and friendly. I'll start by saying that the chicken was enjoyable. I came with some friends and ordered chicken drumsticks and wings to share, splitting it halfway between spicy and soy garlic. The spicy was legitimately spicy, and the soy garlic had so-so flavor. The most impressive part was the crisp of the skin. The tenderness and juiciness of the meat was still retained as well. It came with pickled daikon, which I liked. The pricing, however, was a little on the steeper side, in my opinion. The service was lacking. Our server was nice, but not only did it take a while for the food to come out, she also got a friend's drink order wrong and asked him if he would just take the incorrect drink instead of offering to correct the problem. The location on Franklin is nice, even though it's right on the eastern edge of the Franklin Street businesses, where McAllister's used to be. Overall, it wasn't bad, and I wouldn't be opposed to coming back, as long as my expectations for service are tempered. read more

My previous review included a one star rating because of the way I was treated when seeking a gluten free option per my doctor's orders. I had vowed never to come here again, because of both my dining experience and because I was harassed by people claiming to be affiliated with Bonchon and my server respectively. HOWEVER-- A dear friend invited me here for dinner. She is new to the area, doesn't know about my Bonchon experience, and I didn't want to upset her. Since I have been advised I can eat gluten again, I decided to go with her. I had spicy chicken strips and they were delicious. I will ultimately continue to eat at Bonchon, but I will be aware of my friends' dietary needs and want to be sure that people who follow a gluten free diet will know they should skip this place. Certainly, look at the menu before going, and don't plan to make substitutions. I can't imagine, given my previous experience, that would go over well. read more

The fried chicken was good but it's the only thing saving the review. the bulgogi felt like 20% meat, 80% veggies, and the Tteokbokki was a straight up disappointment. It tasted like nothing, the sauce was so watered down, we couldn't eat it. If you're coming for the chicken then great choice! Hooray for Chapel Hill! WE have a Bonchon! This was not the first Bonchon I've been to, but it's the first time in this state. Like most of the others, it has modern decor, young servers, and pretty much the same menu. They've got other fun dishes, but you come here for the wings. Mine were pretty close to the others I've had in NY, DC, and others, but not quite there. (the ones I've had in NY were sublime..) If I have one complaint for Bonchon, and this goes especially for the Chapel Hill location -- can you do anything about those prices? The one "lunch special" is 8 wings for $9. Add a drink, some kimchi or radishes and you're quickly to $13 before tip. Remember, you're on a college campus. Throw the drink in for free, or drop it a dollar and you'll be packed every day. Korean cuisine is one of my favorites, so I was excited to try Bonchon on Franklin Street for the first time. The opening week for most restaurants is usually hectic, so I'll overlook the disorganized seating process and other small bumps in what was otherwise a decent experience. In terms of food, the chicken was definitely unique, albeit lacking a bit in sauce. There are only two flavors, but both are good, with a sweet undertone that I enjoy. The bibimbap, on the other hand, is average at best. The presentation was great, but I asked for extra red pepper paste to make up for the lack of flavor and dryness of the dish. For bibimbap, there are definitely better options around the Triangle, but as a closer alternative, Bonchon's is all right. My friends ordered the chicken katsu, which I heard was also just all right, and the fried rice, which seemed to be one of the better dishes. Price-wise, it's overpriced, in my opinion. Definitely expect to spend well over $10 for any meal. Lunch deals come close to fairly-priced, though, depending on what you get. Service is decent, attentive and friendly enough. The decor is minimal and modern with lots of natural lighting; two floors of seating is nice. Overall, Bonchon didn't exactly live up to the hype that surrounded its opening. The food is just good, and the pricing raises the question of whether it's worth it. I'll probably be back, though, just for the chicken and because it's the only place on Franklin where you can satisfy a bibimbap craving. read more

Small restaurant towards the end of Franklin St. This place is great for groups as the serving sizes are huge. The chicken dishes were extremely crispy and savory. We got the spicy rice noodles and fish cakes. If you're into super spicy and chewy things, get the rice noodle dish! We got half and half of the soy garlic and sweet crunch. Wow, great wings. I had been to one of the first Bonchon locations, in New York, years ago, and I remembered how good the wings were. Today I was driving through Chapel Hill with some time to kill when I noticed that there is now a Bonchon here. I ordered 10 wings spicy, and they did not disappoint. The wings were juicy and crunchy with plenty of flavor and kick. They were better than the last few orders of American style buffalo wings I've had recently. The wings are about the same size as buffalo style wings. And the spicy sauce was delicious. Probably toward the top of my spice tolerance level, but I had no problem finishing an order of 10. read more
