We stopped by The Pig and ended up really enjoying it. I got the pulled pork sandwich and my husband ordered the fried bologna sandwich. We also shared a plate of three sides, originally wanted the fried green tomatoes, but they were sold out, so we swapped for hushpuppies along with collard greens and baked beans. I'll be honest, when my sandwich came out I was a little nervous because the slaw is BRIGHT yellow. I was expecting a strong yellow mustard flavor (which I'm not a fan of), but it actually wasn't like that at all and worked really well. My husband's bologna sandwich had a super thick cut piece of bologna and was fried perfectly. Everything we had was delicious, but I seriously could not stop eating the pickles, they were that good! The staff was friendly and happy to answer all our questions. It did fill up pretty quickly while we were there, but they've got a big outdoor seating area with plenty of space too. A small clean little place in a tiny shopping center with on site parking. Good service. The food is average. I ordered a barbecue plate which comes with hush puppies that came out of an extruder, sliced pickled cucumbers and a yellow slaw. I don't know what causes the slaw to be yellow whether it's a spice or mustard. If it's mustard, there's not much mustard flavor, and it was chopped into oblivion. More of a mush. The BBQ tasted pretty good although it was already sauced. The collard greens I got instead of the pickles was a generous portion even given that substitute sides are $3 extra. The collards didn't taste that good, but adding some of their vinegar sauce helped. The thicker sauce taste better, imo. It's OK, don't know if I'll be back, probably not, but maybe worth a try for you. read more

The Pig is by far my favorite BBQ spot in the area. North Carolina is known for pulled pork, and this place absolutely nails it. The plates are the perfect size and come with all the right sides: mustard-based slaw (not mayo), light and delicious homemade pickles, & great hushpuppies. The gumbo is a must-try if you're a gumbo fan. The homemade andouille sausage in it is incredible and adds so much flavor. Order with a side of the cornbread- the cornbread is fire. I stopped in for lunch one day and noticed a lot of people ordering the Vietnamese pork cheek salad- which I will definitely be trying next time. It might defeat the purpose of a "salad" with pork cheek, but it looked amazing. They also have perfect sweet tea and a few rotating local beers on tap. Service is excellent, and you can tell many of the staff have been there a long time. There are lots of tables inside- nothing fancy, but a cozy, comfortable spot to meet up with a friend and enjoy a great meal. read more

A friend recommended that I try this place and it was great. It was my 3rd choice if that and boy was I wrong, but how could I have known it would be this good? They have a diner sort of atmosphere. It also has a Vietnamese undertone to the menu. Bon mi and pork cheek salad are two indicators. In some ways, it is like someone who grew up in Vietnam moved to the deep south and worked in a diner. They make their own hotdog, I mean, like the sausage part of the hotdog. I had to try one. I ordered mine with mustard, ketchup, and coleslaw. Their coleslaw has hints of turmeric and spiciness to it, and sort of a yellow color, and it has carrot in it. Spicy with just a hint of Asian flavor. To go with this, I had the BLT sandwich, because I like BLTs. The pig makes its own bacon as in it cures and cut its own bacon. Their BLT was fresh and tasty just like you made it yourself only somehow better. Then I had the pimento and cheese french fries with bacon. A small plate of these is enough for two people, the pimento and cheese to serve hot melted over the fresh fried french fries with bacon crumbles from their house, cut bacon. It was amazing. It was delightful. It was sexy. There's a lot of good stuff on the menu, like they make their own pastrami. I probably should've ordered it because I love pastrami. They also have barbecue plates and the aforementioned pork cheek salad. When I get back this way in a couple of weeks, I'm gonna eat there again. It was over the top delightful. I came at least 3 years or more ago and was unimpressed by their food and especially their prices - that almost every entre doesn't include a side. We went again today and got a po boy, a single side of hush puppies, and a pulled pork sandwich- $33 - no drinks The sandwiches were decent but not anything I'd crave. The Pig was close to our rental house while we were in town. The menu was intriguing and we love barbecue so we decided to check it out. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to you. The guy at the register was very helpful and nice. The interior was pig themed. The food was definitely five star. They are modern style barbecue so some purist may not enjoy their menu as much. I had the pork cheek sandwich. It was Vietnamese inspired, so pickled vegetables as well as an amazing umami flavor. For my side, I ordered the fried green tomatoes, which were also excellent. First of all, I am vegetarian and I love The Pig. My whole family can eat there (plenty of options for grown-ups and kids), and I love the BBQ tempeh plate and shiitake mushroom tacos. The servers are always super friendly, and there's beer on tap! If you're hanging out there, you can walk over to Little Gem (connected to The Pig) or get dessert at Chapel Chill ice cream. We ordered BBQ plates: Pulled pork, with slaw, pickles and hush puppies. The pulled pork tasted fine, but was a little dry. The pickled cucumbers (rather than pickles, think of them as cucumber slices in vinegar / sugar water) were very good. The hush puppies were made with good dough (not too sweet), but their long curly shapes made the focus on the fried exterior rather than the flavor of the hush-puppies themselves (not so great - too much fried flavor, not enough hush-puppy flavor). The slaw was peculiar and awful -- it was yellow (not sure what that's about), but the big problem was that it didn't resemble normal coleslaw (or the coleslaw pictured on the restaurant's web site). This slaw had been run through a blender, chopped so fine that the little pieces were about 1-mm across (way too small, losing all texture and crunch). Someone left the slaw in the machine for far too long -- not good). The Pig had been strongly recommended to us -- we were disappointed. read more

I have had NC BBQ many times on the past when I live in NC and also when visiting but today I decided to get a catfish po-boy We were in a group of 4 and all the food was good, service was fast and friendly. Potato salad is redskin potatoes and mustard based and really good, but the coleslaw is odd, finely diced ingredients and yellowish in color, taste started out like coleslaw but finished weird, not a fan as I prefer regular coleslaw Overall place was good and would visit again. We had just arrived in September in Chapel Hil from California and were starving after flying all day on pretzels and peanuts. Having grown up in eastern NC, whenever we visit family in NC, we make a beeline to the closest BBQ place to fill up on hushpups and Q. So, it was with the best expectations that we arrived at The Pig after a long travel day. It was late and the restaurant was closed, but someone directed us to the still-open bar, advising we could get food there. At the bar, we ordered drinks and a big to-go order. Two bbq sandwiches, one without the bun - just q - since you couldn't order just pulled pork at the bar. Hushpuppies. Fried okra. And sprouts and mushrooms. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice. I really liked the photography on the walls. I was also given a sample of a milk nitro stout, which was fantastic! I wish I could remember what it was called, because it hit the spot! We appreciated that they fed us so late at night, but when we got to our room, most of the food was disappointing. The bbq was decent, but I wish the serving size had been more generous. The pictures from the online menu show a much larger portion of BBQ than either of us received. The hushpups were the highlight and were delicious. The sprouts n shrooms were terrible... overcooked and burned. And disappointingly, the fried okra were missing. I really love fried okra and always look forward to it when in NC, so that was pretty disappointing. There was also a small container of pickled cukes which was another delicious highlight. In giving The Pig 3 stars, I bumped it up to account for the kindness of the staff in preparing food for us so close to the bar's closing time and for the yummy hushpups, the pickled cukes, and the taste of the nitro stout. But, the small servings of Q, the awful brussels, and the missing fried okra let a bad taste in our mouths, you could say. Bottom line: after we ate, we just tossed all the leftovers in the garbage, since the hushpuppies were all gone and nothing else was worth saving for leftovers. read more

So, my experience seems to be what a lot of people have experienced. I ordered the brisket plate and for just under $20, I received two dried out pieces of brisket with absolutely no flavor whatsoever. The hush puppies are bland as well. I didn't care for the Cole slaw, but, to be fair it was as advertised I'm just not a huge mustard flavor fan. The best part was honestly the homemade pickles. Brisket is supposed to be one those foods that the second you put it in your mouth it's a heavy sigh and your eyes roll back in your head from how good it is and this was far from that. 2 stars because the second piece of brisket was somewhat less dry than the first one and I've had worse (I cooked it myself, lol and yea, only two pieces for $20) and the homemade (I hope) bbq sauce was really good to me. It's a simple diner-style barbecue joint. The service is kind and the food is prepared quickly. The brisket is well-cooked, but gets lost underneath a ladle of warm sauce. The egg salad-type cole slaw is a little awkward and I'd recommend coughing up $2 to switch this side. The pickles are more similar to cucumbers dunked in vinegar, but still a nice refresher. The service was friendly and quick. That being said, it was down hill from there. First off, the bbq was dry and had no flavor. I've been smoking meat since my 20's (I'm 41 now..) and I've made better pulled pork dishes than these folks. Aside from that, their regular tea was a small cup and the price I paid for the tea and the sandwich was ridiculous! Over $15! Smithfield BBQ definitely does a better job and doesn't charge out the ying yang. Definitely recommend you look elsewhere for some good bbq, cuz this place isn't it! read more

Decent pricing. Beef brisket was very good But portion on the meat is just ok, I wish there was more meat then the hush puppies. We really like their slaw , it's different from other places we tried and tasted very refreshing. The pickles is really tasty as well but I suspect it's a bit too much sugar. I can't tell you how delicious ALL of our food was when we came here. My boyfriend and I were in town, and were extremely disappointed the night before by going to Midwood. Growing up with actual pig pickins at family reunions outside of Wilson, NC, it's fair to say I'm a critic and analyst over anything calling itself NC bbq. My boyfriend and I arrived right at opening, and I will say, it's a walk up, order, then grab your drink and have a seat anywhere kind of place. After my initial moment of, "Oh, it's not a 'full-service' kind of place?" I got the memo. I decided to order the whole kit and caboodle. Mac and cheese, fried okra, which, to me, were coated in a mixture of cornmeal and sweet hush puppy mix. It was insanely delicious. Also ordered beer baked beans, and a barbecue sandwich with coleslaw on the side. Secondly, make sure to check out the pictures of the coleslaw in other reviews. Some people didn't know how to take it, but the main difference is that it looks like a food processor was used to make it. It still tasted like Carolina coleslaw to me, just had a slightly different texture than I'm used to, but I loved it! I HATE coleslaw normally. I almost finished the entire dish of it! My boyfriend ordered the bbq nachos for both of us to share, and they were so good, I ate them three days later, and still loved them! We shared the sides, and I swear I quit eating 5 times, but couldn't help but keep taking small bites, because the food was THAT good! I almost cried during my lunch: it was so beautiful to be reminded of the family reunions I attended as a child, with my grandmother, who is no longer with us, and of several family members who we've also lost through the years. Sorry for such a long review, but eating at this restaurant and eating Carolina bbq was/is it's own experience, almost a nonnegotiable reminder to stop, enjoy, and slow down. Oh my god it is SO GOOD!! I've lived in NC my entire life and I'm a southern good fanatic, so I feel like I'm relatively qualified to say that this is some of the best barbecue food I've had. I went vegetarian a few years ago and barbecue is the one thing I miss most, but The Pig's vegetarian/vegan options have 100% fixed that!! Their tempeh platter is my favorite. So few restaurants do tempeh well but the tempeh here is cooked and seasoned perfectly. Although it's called a bbq restaurant, I would consider it Southern inspired. I ordered the catfish platter and a side of collard greens. My daughter ordered the shitake po boy. My platter had an interesting array of items: an egg salad looking coleslaw (never seen anything like it before), hush puppy strips instead of the balls (again, a first), a sizable portion of chopped cucumbers that were pickled, and a decent sized piece of catfish. The catfish was not breaded, so, again, I was taken a little by surprise, also would have been good if there were either a bigger piece of fish or a second filet. The greens were solid. Daughter said, "I quite enjoyed my po boy. I would definitely get that again." I thought things were good, not great. Personally, I would only go back if others in my group wanted to go there. The coleslaw looked very different than what I'm used to but boy was it delicious! Of course I put it on my sandwich and loved it. The pickles were to me, basically cucumber salad cut like pickles. I loved them! We also ordered the 3 sides (baked beans, collards, and fried green tomatoes). Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious! I loved the house made remoulade that came with the tomatoes! Yumm!! Hubby loved his bbq platter. I liked their version of hush puppies... in the shape of twists. The restaurant is not fancy at all. This is a good place to get your money's worth of food. I ordered the rib platter thinking it would be 4 ribs, no it was a half if a rack and not baby backs either. They were good, very tender and the sauce was good also. I shared them with 4 family members and still took some home! The coleslaw that comes on the side is different. I wasn't a fan. The homemade sliced pickles were good, kind of on the bread and butter line of pickles but nice and crispy. It was a great value at $18. Employees were nice and courteous. read more
