Worst bonchon chain I have ever stepped into. Does not wipe the tables when seating guests. Chicken was awful - we ordered the 10 piece wings and five of them were smaller than the size of my thumb. Some of the chicken pieces weren't even coated in sauce that they just tasted bland. I have been to multiple locations throughout the east coast and love the chain but this one... I recommend saving yourself a trip and going elsewhere. read more

Located on the very end of Franklin St, Bonchon is an Americanized attempt at Korean Fried Chicken. While it doesn't compare up to other KFCs like Soo Cafe in Northeast Raleigh, it's a pretty good choice if you're craving some crispy fried chicken. I've heard some people complain that their chicken can be dry but this was not the case for me this time. We ordered half and half Spicy and Soy Garlic. It was pretty good. Service was fast and the interior was clean. Pretty good overall. Will come again for a quick chicken craving since Soo Cafe is 45ish minutes from UNC. Ahhh. read more

Well, not an entire miss but just in the okay zone with me. I've tried both the Katsu chicken and the chicken wrap. Neither were particularly flavorful and like others have mentioned there isn't about sauce which would go along way to ameliorate this issue. Ugh. Soo disappointed. I love Bon Chon from New York visits. I swore by it. Crispiest wings known to man. But damn, the space they took over seems like an odd layout, needs to be redone. The service is dingy and staff seems confused. The chicken is crispy but they lack sauce and they refuse to allow you to add extra. What are wings without sauce? I don't see this place surviving at this rate. It's like they are resting on their laurels. Why are they not doing gorilla marketing in the streets? Should of gave out wings when UNC wins. I think this place is very special it's right off campus and you get that atmosphere with the same comfortably as your local high school grill, the food was outstanding truly delicious! I got the fried chicken combo with fries, and order of fried rice and to be honest I can't pick what I liked the most everything hit the spot and had me in food ecstasy. We were served by Anthony and he did a great job walking my partner who wasn't as familiar with Korean styled dishes. I would say all in all this place is perfect for my taste at least and I'll definitely be back soon and I'll be hungry when I come read more

If you are looking for something authentic to eat past 9 pm in Chapel Hill off academic period, this is a good place to visit. We visited in the deep summer so almost all restaurants on Franklin Street were closed after 9 pm. We accidentally found this restaurant as we arrived late. What a pleasant surprise. Waitresses were very friendly and the tables arrangement was socially distanced. We ordered half and half combo fried chicken. The chicken was crispy outside and tender inside. The Korean taco (we ordered bulgogi) was very tasty with soft taco skin, plenty of vegetable, topped with mayonnaise. Shrimp shumai is one thing I would not recommend. It's tasteless and somewhat watery on the skin. As for the drinks, I was hoping the restaurant would have some authentic Korean drinks. Great lunch takeout. Had 3 fried chicken orders to try everything, spicy and the soy garlic, wings and drums. The batter was crispy even after delivery and stayed delicious for repeat trips to the kitchen for an hour. Very pleased with the texture. The glassy honey made them also attractive, but sweeter than I needed. I'd definitely prefer to have some less sweet options when eating a large quantity. Twice fried fries were generous. Bulgogi and bibimbap were good for takeout, but id much rather eat at the restaurant. No one in the family cared for the radishes. We had our own kimchi, so didn't order that. The japchae was full of ingredients and flavor. The noodles were cooked just right. I would get it again. read more

This was great when it first opened up in the Chapel Hill area, but when we came he after about 2 months of opening, their quality went downhill. The fried chicken was good, but we only wish that there were more sauce with the fried chicken. The glass noodle dish was a little small for the price that we paid for. I wish I could give a 3.5. Bonchon is a cool place. The decor is nice and the food is good. The chicken is extra crispy and a nice size. I have had both flavors and found the spicy was too spicy for me although my husband loved it. The flavors of the soy garlic are perfect and honestly, I think THAT is what made the chicken. I also had the avocado ball which has a lot of different ingredients and flavors but they meshed so well it was absolutely delicious. I wasn't a fan of the seasoned fries. I didn't taste the parmesean and they had a strong onion flavor and were very crunchy, reminscent of a funyun. I would be interested in trying some of the more traditional meals and cocktails. What takes away from Bonchon though are the prices. The avocado ball was $10.95 as are most of the appetizers and the smallest amount of chicken you can get is $12.95. I do think the menu is a bit misleading/confusing when ordered the chicken. It states 6 wings and 3 drumsticks but "wings" include wingettes and drumettes. So for someone thinking they are ordering more "flats" than not, to end up with basically big and small drumsticks was disappointing. The "combos" are laughable, it's basically chicken with either coleslaw or pickled radish (both $2 as a side), it may be enough for 2 people but no substitutes, so if you don't like either of those things then you are out of luck. Combos do not include a drink, I'm not sure why they are called combos anyway. Their chicken is "meant to be shared" but if you want to order for one you must order at least 10 wings for $12.95 but again that is JUST chicken. I think they are in the middle of the road. Chapel Hill should be grateful that Bon Chon has opened here. Yes, the service can be uneven, and the food quality at this point (open for less than 6 weeks) shows some variation. BUT the experience varies from not the best Bon Chon (but still on of the top places in Chapel Hill) to a great Bon Chon experience, which is absolutely delightful. I've been a few times, and I notice that a lot of people are making odd choices, so here's how you Bon Chon: -Never, for the love of god NEVER order chicken STRIPS, take that order to Chick-Fil-A -Order wings and drumsticks, spicy is better if you like spicy food, soy is good if you don't, half and half is always a winner. -Order a side of "Bibimbap sauce" AKA Gochujiang for dipping of the wings -Order some JapChae, or a salmon ball, or something else to complement your chicken, but not the takoyaki. Skip that -Share your order, this menu isn't designed for individual servings -Try to get them to bring both coleslaw and pickled radish with the chicken If you adhere to the above you're in for a good time, if you don't you'll be leaving a 3 star review and wondering what all of the fuss is about. This is my second time at this location and I absolutely love their wings!! But first, let me explain this establishment. Parking is kinda hard here depending on when you go. It's only street parking. The first time, I went on a Saturday night and it took us about 30mins to find parking. Second time, I went on a Sunday evening during snow time. So parking was very easy since no one was around. I believe parking is hard in general. So be prepare to be on the search! This place was actually roomy. Pretty big! Lots of seating and chairs. Kind of lacked decoration, but that's alright. The first time we went, I forgot to take photos... oops. But I remember what we had. We had the Korean tacos, the spicy rice cake and fish cake dish, and the medium chicken combination where it came with big drumsticks and wings (spicy flavor). - Korean tacos had a weird taste.. we didn't exactly like it. I think because of the coleslaw with bulgogi wasn't a good mix. - their spicy rice cake and fish cake thing was pretty good, but couldn't finish it because there was a lot! And the taste does get a little old quick. We could only eat so much. - the spicy flavor for the fried chicken was delicious!!! Chicken was sooo crispy and flavorful!!But we definitely prefer the wings over the big drumsticks. With the wings, you can taste the flavor better. For the drumsticks, it's dark meat so it has a specific taste where it kind of mask the spicy flavor. So definitely just get the wings! PS, the spicy isn't really that spicy. But I love heat, so still take caution if you're not used to it. We eat a lot of Korean food and my sister thought we should try it. Nice atmosphere with K-pop playing in the background and two big TVs good for watching games. They had a deal on yelp for their cocktails so I ordered a Moscow Mule. I guess I should have asked how exactly they made it because when it came it was pineapple juice, coconut juice, and midori with whipped cream on top wtf. I understand making unique cocktails but don't call it a Moscow mule if it isn't. I ordered the tteokbokki which I've ordered at least 20 times in the past at more authentic Korean places. It was so spicy I could not eat more than a few bites. I think the lid to the spice jar must have come off or something. Came during soft opening, which means I understand if the food comes out slow, something is missing, the waiter/waitress forgets an item, etc. These things all happened, but on top of that, the food was downright awful. I got a rice bowl with veggies, bulgogi, and some Korean sauce. My friend got the half and half chicken tenders. We also split the steamed shrimp dumplings. His chicken and fries came first--the fries were absolutely tasteless, and the chicken was some of the driest I've ever eaten. Shortly after, my bowl came as well as the shrimp appetizer. The shrimp was complete mush, and my bowl, which was bursting with colors, was completely flavorless. If anything, it had a slightly offputting beef taste. My friend said that he felt sick after eating the food, and I didn't bother eating more than a few spoonfuls of the bowl. When we told the waitress, she apologized, but didn't offer to take something off of the bill or get us a coupon for next time. To top it off, the atmosphere in the place is bad and the food is expensive. It's huge with a lot of grey walls and not much else. We ended up paying $45 for the two of us with a tip but no drinks. Between ordering and receiving food the wait time was approximately 30 minutes. This was longer than expected given the place was not particularly full and it was prime dinner time. One person's dish came out about 15 minutes before everyone else's. Sauce was inconsistently applied on chicken, with some drenched and others dry. Chicken is done in Korean style but nothing particularly great. Tastes like mediocre chicken you get in Korea via motorbike. Quite expensive given the quality. The two flavors were indistinguishable, which suggests they may have messed up our order. Sad to see Mandu do not look Korean style and are very expensive. Appetizers in general don't look particularly appetizing but this is not factoring into rating since we only had the chicken and bimbimbap. read more

Food was decent. Ordered the wings (sweet crunch and spicy garlic). I, personally, did not care too much for the sweet crunch; it was too sweet for me. I preferred the spicy garlic wings. I asked the waitress if I could have extra sauce on the side and she said she would have to take the wings, which had already been touched and partially eaten, to the back to cook them in more sauce - which seemed like a health code violation to me?
