This was my first time visiting the Bonchon in Farmington Hills. Since it's a chain, I had a general idea of what to expect, and overall it was a solid experience with a few minor drawbacks. I stopped in during lunch and ordered the lunch special with boneless wings, French fries, and a fountain drink. The fries were actually excellent--crispy, hot, and probably my favorite part of the meal. The sauce on the boneless wings was delicious and full of flavor, but the chicken itself was a bit more crunchy than I prefer. It felt slightly overcooked for my taste. I understand that everything seems to be made to order, which I'm totally fine with, but the wait time felt longer than expected for a simple lunch order. Also, while the person who took my order wasn't rude by any means, he wasn't very personable either, which took away from the experience just a bit. That said, there are plenty of other menu items I'd like to come back and try, and I wouldn't hesitate to give this location another shot. We wanted to get wings for the soccer game this evening and went to redo our order from the week prior. They had a new employee who didn't know how to ring up the order. I had to wait for him to text his manger to figure it out, which was fine. When I proceeded to order, he charged me the full price. I explained we had a large order the week prior and didn't have any issues. He said he'd text his manager again. I was in the store for almost 30 minutes, missed the whole first part of the soccer game, and left empty handed. The manager suddenly "stopped answering" and the employee didn't say anything. If you have never had Korean Fried Chicken, run don't walk to your nearest Bonchon. First and foremost, this place did not seem busy enough for the quality of food you get. Bonchon is set up like a fast casual restaurant where you order at the register and then pick a seat. They have quite a few Korean traditional choices and so much chicken to choose from. If you go at lunch time they have several really well priced combos all served with a side and drink for around $12.99. I got the lunch wing combo with yaengneom (sweet and spicy) sauce served with fries and a drink. My wife got the boneless wings with rice and a drink. My daughter got tenders with rice and a drink. I also got an order of Korean street corn. Korean wings are twice fried, so they are super crispy outside, but very moist and tender inside. These ones did not disappoint. The yaengneom sauce was the perfect balance of sweet and heat. I also got a side to dip my perfectly crispy fries. Then there was the street corn. This gives Mexican street corn a run for its money. It was crunch, creamy, salty, sweet, spicy, and just dang perfect. Try it and thank me later. If you see a Bonchon near you go there. You won't be disappointed. My only criticism was that the bathroom was not super clean. However the dining room and rest of the restaurant was spotless. Also, very fun Korean and chicken inspired decor. read more

Service was great too but I cannot give 5 stars due to the state of the bathrooms. I was putting up with the texture because the spicy sauce was ok, but then found a small hair. Pulled it off and inspected the rest. Likely a one time issue. I was a little hesitant to try this restaurant because of the rating. But it's better to give something a chance and draw your own conclusions rather than rely on what others say. I'm not saying this is the best Korean chicken wings I've had, but I was very satisfied with my lunch. 6 wings, a side of pickled radish and drink was my order. My chicken was perfectly cooked, well seasoned and had a nice crispy texture from the skin. The radishes did not pass the eyeball test, but they more than made up for it with the acidic flavor and crispy bite. So, I am rating this solely on my experience and not my wife's. For some reason, I decided to try the soy garlic chicken sandwich. The cashier asked if I wanted to make it a combo with fries, so I did. They featured Stubborn sodas which were amazing. The food came out fairly quickly. The customer service was great and efficient. When we got back to our hotel, I dug into my sandwich and it was amazing. I wish they would've been a little more generous with the soy garlic. My fries were a bit cold, so that was a bit disappointing especially since our hotel was down the street. Unfortunately, my wife got sick after eating her wings. It's a chain, first one I have ever seen in MI, so far. May be short lived after this visit. They need to work on food execution and their customer service skills, it's non-existent. We ordered the Spicy Chicken fried rice, 12 boneless wings with spicy sauce, pickled radish, kimchi, kimchi coleslaw, japchae with chicken. $57.77. Mostly a twice fried chicken spot and brushed on sauce too. Charged us for 12 piece bone-in wings instead of 12 piece boneless wings. The boneless was $3 cheaper. The slaw was so-so, as was the pickled radish and kimchi coleslaw. The kimchi was just ok, it's a bit more mature than I prefer and the flavor was just average. The japchae was lack luster, not super flavorful and lacking in mushrooms and veggies for me. The spicy chicken fried rice wasn't too bad, had good heat. The boneless wings came out on a tray, lined up like soldiers and with barely enough sauce to cover even half of one side of the wing. The tray was so bone dry after picking up two boneless wings, a telltale sign they gave us almost no sauce. I asked another staff member if they could give us a side of sauce or at least more sauce on the boneless wings. She said that's how much sauce comes on the wings and they can't give us more. Wow! Lacks customer service here. I was quite put-off by the staff's resounding no to my request for more sauce and took the tray back to the counter and asked to either give us a refund on my boneless wings or give us more sauce on them. The first staff member that waited on us said she would speak to the back kitchen and gave us maybe slightly double the first round of sauce, quite pathetic still. The spicy sauce tasted decent at least. I had to wait for my refund for the price difference of the $3 and had to ask about it a few more times before leaving as well. They are unbelievably cheap about saucing their wings and boneless wings here for sure. Bad idea for a chicken place in my opinion. I haven't ever been to another wings place that was so deliberate in giving customers as little sauce as possible, just to save a few pennies. We got Doordash from here today, I had heard very good things and had been wanting to try it. Overall everything was good but not mind-blowing. My favorite item was the chicken sandwich with coleslaw, we got it with the soy garlic sauce. Like others have mentioned, the sandwich and the wings aren't super "saucy"... We also got the 12 pc of boneless wings with the same sauce. A friend told me their Regular sauce is a bit spicy, just FYI. We also got the onion rings and garlic and parmesan fries. The onion rings had a nice crunch and the fries were also good but could've been crispier. Bonchon is pretty expensive... For our four items it was about $45 before doordash fees and tip. Was very excited to hear the news that there's a Bonchon franchise here in Michigan. They specialize in Korea's version of fried chicken, which is lightly breaded, deep fried, then hand-brushed with thin coat of their signature soy garlic or spicy sauce. We came in around 530pm for dinner. Waited in line and finally reach the only counter/cash register. We placed our order and paid the check at 540pm. Our takeout meal of 8pc chicken wings half and half was received at 645pm. We were told it was a 45 minute wait but turned out to be an hour. Instead of waiting inside the dining area, we walked out then went to Aldi to buy groceries. When we came back there, still the order was not ready. Spent $21++ for 8 pc chicken wings, an ounce of coleslaw as a "complimentary" side, a special side of Mac kimchi (in a 10-12oz paper cup) and a plastic bottle of peach tea. Was it worth the wait? Yes and no! The spicy sauced chicken was good. The soy garlic chicken felt rubbery when I took a bite. Maybe because of the weather, or was it because the service was too long that the chicken turned cold. It was no longer crispy when we ate it. Loved the peach tea. Although the noodles were tender, There was not enough kimchi in the Mac kimchi. A lot of people are standing in line, and some are sitting while waiting inside the small dining area. No social distancing. This location may not be the safest place to eat during this COVID times. The tables and floor needed to be wiped clean. The quality of their food is not as great compared to other Bonchon locations from abroad. It's either because of the cold weather that affects the crispness of the chicken. Also, the kitchen looks too small to add more equipment, and the limited kitchen crew is overwhelmed with orders. There might be a potential to improve the quality of their food during summer, and the service becoming faster once the crew gets a hang of their job during the peak times/demand. The service itself went smoothly, and we weren't waiting for our food too long. I wouldn't exactly say that you're getting the best bang for your buck with this place. The portions felt like they were enough for one meal (which is fine), but the total cost felt like I should have had some leftovers. We also tried the spicy chicken sandwich. Fair warning, this one can have a little more heat than you're expecting (compared to something like Chic-fil-A or Popeye's). Just like everything else on the menu, it was fine. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with the food here. I think Metro-Detroit has better Korean offerings at a better value. First time I went to this Bonchon location the famous wings were perfectly crispy and flavored with sauce. My friend and I would definitely have given the place a 5 star rating for the chicken. But the chicken was a bit dry when we did takeout the second try when I ordered food from there. It was lacking in the sauce that it's dipped in. The 3rd time I went recently, I tried the boneless wings and wasn't impressed. And the regular spicy wings that my friend ordered weren't even crispy or looked like they had battering on them. My niece and I had a huge ordered and ordered it as curb side pickup at 12:18. Pick up time was 12:45. We got here at 12:30 and waited. 12:45 rolls around and still did not have our food. My niece went inside to ask them about our order, and they said it will be a few minutes. 1:03 rolls around and still no food. We keep seeing people going in and out with their order that they ordered inside the store. This made us pretty frustrated. She went back inside and it is now 1:05 and still no food. The highlight was the mac & kimcheese. Cheesy mac & cheese with a little tang from the kimchee. It was really delicious! Their signature is the chicken sandwich - 2 chicken fingers topped with kimchee coleslaw & I chose the soy garlic sauce, served on a brioche bun. Sandwich was good but not great. The bun was hard in some areas & I honestly expected the chicken to be more flavorful. Kimchee coleslaw was good. Seasoned fries were decent. It's a new place & they are very busy. Currently, the wait is long just because the grand opening was on the 29th. So, I am sure the staff is trying to get used to everything and getting inundated with a lot of customers. The wait was well worth it though I know a lot of yelper's are complaining about it like they can do better given the situation and giving 1 star ratings...really??? Easy to order online, thought there was a curbside option but had to go into the store to pickup. Just a heads up, prices are higher on food delivery apps vs. the actual bonchon site. We were shocked when we got home and looked inside and the sides were in tiny plastic cups that weren't filled. Only enough for one person, definitely not a family. Glad I finally made it here to see what all the fuss was all about! I'd have to say, it was just ok. Maybe my expectations were too high? Maybe I ordered the wrong entrees? The food was a 3 but their pleasant and helpful employees up front pushed them up to a 3.5 but in this case I'm not rounding up. They are located in a strip mall and the restaurant itself is cute inside and interior is clean, but it is on the small side, thinking this is more like a carry out location. The menu looked intriguing and I was torn as what to order! The japchae looked interesting but it has mushrooms in it, can't stand them. But I figured I should start with the 'basics' so I ordered the tenders (went with the garlic soy, thought the hot might be too hot?). Guess I should've done half and half? I ordered their spicy mayo to dip them into and it was ok, not that hot nor that interesting of a flavor. Kinda a hike from us (A2/Ypsi), but ecstatic to finally eat here. I've heard so much about this place. We ordered 12pc chicken wings 50:50 soy sauce & spicy. Japchae, coleslaw & pickled radish for sides. The chicken was crispy & full of flavor. It's honestly worth the hype. Japchae was okay, a little more flavor will give it more umpf. Also, I was expecting the regular yellow pickled raddish. Lol sides were alright. They have other food available that I'll try next time. Also, they have an interesting soda flavors. Aside from the weight of the food (I do always enjoy a weighty to go bag) and even though I've moderately enjoyed a couple other meals from here before, tonight's was a disaster. Starting with asking the order taker whether or not I could get tofu with the bibimbap and him saying, "yes if you put it on at home," one thing was worse than the next.
