Sweet Asia Cafe has been my go-to spot since I moved to Southfield almost 10 years ago...something has changed. I don't know if the "business for sale" sign in the window has anything to do with it, but today's order was very disappointing...nothing was hot, I can't even say it was warm. My spring roll was actually COLD in the middle and the steamed dumplings were room temperature at best. I only live about a mile from the restaurant, so it's not like things cooled down on the way home (I bit into the spring roll while I was driving home...IJS). It's disappointing to order take out for lunch and then you have to heat it up at home just to eat. read more

The restaurant had one table of young ladies and a gentleman making their sushi when I stopped to pick up a carry out. A homeless man asked me for money on my way in. The food was fresh. They offer crab rangoon in place of egg rolls in the combination dinners, so that is a nice option. The Hot & Sour soup was full of vegetables, but meh. No spice, no sour, just bland. The crunchy fried bites to go in the soup were included. I had Szechuan chicken and the spice level was perfect. It had way too much green pepper for my liking. The side of fried rice is just rice, no meat unless you choose to upgrade. Overall, nothing to rave about, nor repeat. read more

Brand spanking new! This is a Chinese restaurant that has been open about 3 weeks. When I walked in the lady working the counter was very personable and helpful. I told her that I had never been in before and so she explained the portions and finding what I wanted, which was almond chicken, rice and a side of steamed broccoli. One thing I liked is that with the combo that i ordered, I had the option between egg roll or crab Rangoon. Unlike Many places just throw a stale greasy egg roll in without even asking... The food was great, especially the crab Rangoon.! I was disappointed that I had accidentally ordered fried rice instead of steamed (the menu DOES specify that fried rice comes with the combination plate), but it was actually pretty good. The portion was adequate. Prices seemed reasonable and they have wifi. I did not dine in, but the dining area was kinda cute for a take-out place. The lay-out looks more like it should be take-out, but the decor seems to lean toward trendy... This would be a good place to dine-in for lunch. They also advertise a sushi bar. I love the luncheons in here. Lots of fresh food on the cheap. Tasty. Spicy as asked. Good shrimp, chicken and beef. Nice vegetables. They deliver to my work, which is a must! If you order a luncheon here be prepared to share or eat it twice. Portions are ginormous. None of that overfried mystery meat. Nicely crisp if fried, tender and juicy if not. Actually good vegetables. Sauces are fantastic. I am a fried rice snob. This is awesome fried rice. For a buck you can even add meat of your choosing. I recommend it. Beef is my fave but all versions work. This makes your side dish into another entree. Happiness. They are slow but accurate. The one mistake ever resulted in a totally redone lunch on them. First time I attempted to try this place despite my hesitation based of other reviews! Absolutely disgusting! I order general Tao tofu. It was definitely cooked over and over again. I could knock the tofu on my dining room table and it made a knocking noise. Tried a bite horrible. I called to follow up. The owner was beyond disrespectful. Refused to remake or refund. He told me to call the police or my credit card company and proceeded to call me a psycho. At no time did I disrespect him just expressed my dissatisfaction for old food I was served! I've only been once, but it's solid American Chinese food. I had Kung Pao chicken, and it was quite tasty. The veggies were fresh and not over-cooked, the chicken was tender, and the sauce was good. Yikes! I'm not a complainer, but this place deserves a negative review based on the counter manager's rude, hostile behavior. I placed an order for a Buddha's Feast to go; was charged the menu price of $9.00 and left a $1.00 tip in the jar at the counter. After about five minutes, I changed my mind and told the man I wanted to stay and eat in. When he said that would cost $1.00 more I politely declined and looked over the menu to see if it showed the price difference. It didn't. When I tried to ask another employee about the extra charge, the guy came away from doing food prep out to the counter and basically exploded at me. He first said the menu I was looking at was the take-out menu, though there was no other menu, and became evasive and aggressive when I asked if there was another menu. I said this looked shady and he became really nasty. When I told him it looked shady, he snarled and told me emphatically to "go". It wasn't the $1.00 charge that earns this review, but the person's wholly uncalled-for defensiveness toward a simply-put, innocent question. Ironically, I still ended up paying $10 (including tip) -- but that will be the last and only time because I'll never return to this place again. read more

Found Sweet Asia Cafe after conducting a Yelp search for sushi in Southfield. I love the location...Telegraph at 9 Mile. I ordered two "Chef Special" rolls, which were both huge. I've eaten lots of sushi and I've never had rolls so large. Plenty of food for the money. The Southfield Roll - shrimp tempura and avocado with spicy salmon, scallions and crunch was good but the Dynamic Roll - salmon, asparagus and crab, was even better. The price of both was comparable to most sushi restaurants, $20. There was plenty seating to dine in and sit while you wait for your carryout. They also have a sushi bar. The menu is quite extensive, offering a variety of Asian fare including sashimi and Chinese food. According to the menu, they also cater, deliver and offer private parties. read more

Today's Lunch I ordered the Sesame Chicken with crab ragoon and an order of sushi; salmon avocado roll. The order took less than 15 minutes to prepare. I immediately dived in to get to my sushi roll; I've been thinking/craving it for over an hour. Upon entering the establishment, the ambiance and environment was clean and inviting. The staff was friendly and helpful. I immediately got the impression I would be in for a great experience. I even saw a sushi bar to the left of the entrance, which made me feel a lot better about trying what they had to offer. Upon receiving my order and opening up my sushi I noted the presentation was good, 6 rolls a side of ginger and wasabi. I couldn't wait to eat it. I mixed my wasabi and my soy sauce as I usually do and ate my first roll. I was caught off guard by the cold texture. It reminded me of refrigerated sushi ...and I despise refrigerated sushi! I ate a few more bites just to make sure because I never cannot eat sushi, unless if it wasn't fresh and had been sitting in a cooler of some sort. Needless to say, I didn't finish it and I was highly disappointed that my first impression of this restaurant did not meet my expectations. The Sesame Chicken and fried rice tasted like mall food court food that was sitting under a heated lamp. There wasn't any indication that the food was prepared fresh, aside from it being warm to touch. :( I wasted $15 and only ate a few bites....now what am I going to eat for lunch! We came here via Yelp because of the reviews and we want to say spot on with the high marks they received. First time I had the Chicken and Broccoli combination. The wife had the Almond Chicken combination with a side order of Chicken Fried Rice. Wow...food was incredible...very high quality food and large portions. Service was excellent...very friendly and prompt. Latest visit I had the Mongolian Beef dinner platter and my wife had the Chicken and Broccoli combination. Ordered online for a quick lunch, work right around the corner. Thought by ordering online and waiting 15 minutes before picking it up that it would be ready when i arrived, I was wrong. Still had to sit there for 10 minutes for them to make my meal. Which was just chicken, some fried rice, and two spring rolls. The fried rice was lacking. It wasn't very fried and it was missing flavor. The spring rolls are also just okay, again, not much flavor. Not sure if I will be going back here. I HATE THIS PLACE THEY STOLE MY MONEY This was the worst experience I've ever experienced in my entire life. I verbally said wow that's a lot sauce but I kept going thinking maybe I'm going to enjoy it. I got in my car and tasted the dynamite it was gross just extremely cold and bland nothing like me a avid sushi eater it tasted old! Not fresh! But that's not the worst the Las Vegas was warm and soft n mushy advertised as a spicy deep fried roll with spicy mayo and a jalapeño so much sauce it was no longer crispy I couldn't taste nothing but sauce and a very loud tasting salmon they poor sauce on to cover bad food. I called and asked could they recook it with no sauce she said she would have to call me back and ask the chef who is on a delivery WTF !! This place has a full menu with sushi. Nicely decorated. They have a steam table with a few items already prepared ala Panda Express that is cheap for $7.00 that they pile on the food. You order at the counter then they bring your plate and drink to your table. Then they present your bill at the end of your meal. The full made to order menu items is pricey though. read more

I recently visited Sweet Asia and after about 5 minutes of compliments from the staff, I got my General Tso chicken dinner and was on my merry way! The meat used in the dish was actually chicken... now this might sound funny but if you eat quite a bit of fried chicken at Chinese restaurants, you get it. The pieces of meat were large and still tender. The General Tso sauce was a little different from the norm but equally delicious. Their egg rolls disappointed me because they were mainly cabbage and had a much different sauce than the plum/duck sauce offered at most restaurants but they were still good. The crab ran goons were also delicious and I loved having the option to have either the egg rolls or 2 crab ran goons. They were not filled with creamy cheese, but had chunks of "crab" which added a nice texture to the filling. I will definitely be back due to the quality of the food and the prompt service (much more take-out than dine in style) read more

I came in to Sweet Asia with a coworker for lunch. The cafe is fairly close to my office, and we were able to be eat and be back at our desks within an hour. Prices are average for strip-mall Asian fare, but portions are generous. I had a Thai noodle dish that had lots of veggies, and my only complaint is that is was a little dry. Could have used more sauce. My coworker got spicy string beans and said it was fantastic. When I checked in on Yelp, there was a 10% off offer. We happened to come in during Chinese New Year, so they had already discounted the 10% off the check. Two entrees, drink, tax and tip were under twenty bucks. I wasn't thrilled with the dish that I ordered, but I'm willing to give Sweet Asia another try. read more

I'm not sure how this place got such high reviews. Upon arriving today we were advised that here was no sushi chef employed here at the moment and we would have to order off the standard menu. That's fine, I like Chinese food. The wanton soup was pretty good. That's the only positive to this place. My coworkers ordered the following: - Schezuan chicken -super thick sauce but passable. -Mongolian chicken - indistinguishable from the Schezuan chicken (except missing broccoli) -Sesame chicken - this actually looked pretty good, and my coworker indicated that this was indeed the case. Here's where the review really goes south. The egg roll that comes with the combo is hands down the worst eggroll I've ever eaten and the fried rice was really burnt and gross looking. I ordered the Schezuan beef. This is my standard "I've never been here before so this is hard to mess up" dish. They put Indian curry powder in it! It literally turned my white rice yellow.
