Decent market for this area of Alameda!! I used to come in here often, long ago, when I used to play basketball at nearby Washington Park. Markets always come with market prices, so I usually just get something to drink. Parking isn't too bad in this plaza as this market is the main draw here. But it's very well stocked, ok service as far as I could tell!!

Rude, combative lady at Bonfare Market at the end of Webster in Alameda.

I just went into this market to redeem my winnings from a powerball ticket and was met with the most incompetent, rude person that I have ever dealt with at this market. My winning ticket was for $4 and so I asked her for 4 Super Lotto tickets($1 each) instead of the cash. I then gave her a $20 bill and asked for 10 Powerball tickets($2 each). She clearly didn't bother to listen because she ends up giving me one Super Lotto ticket($1 total) and 5 powerball tickets ($10 total). When I tried to explain what I asked for versus what she gave me, she became agitated and short with me. She forgot that I am owed $4 on top of the $20 I gave her so she starts saying that I am wrong and that I cannot get my 3 Super Lotto tickets and my 5 Powerball tickets because I have already $9 worth of tickets and it won't add up with my $20 in her hand. Again, she clearly forgot about the $4 winnings I had. The guys who I always deal with had to come in and fix it because she didn't want to be helpful. She wanted to argue and be abrasive and combative. She probably would've tried to physically fight me if she wasn't working. Once I got what I asked for from the guys who know what there doing, she continued to sat that I was wrong all along and as I left she yells at me, "YOU'RE NOT GOING TO WIN ANYWAYS!!" Completely unnecessary and unprofessional! I will take my business elsewhere. That lady shouldn't be interacting with customers if she doesn't want to listen and be combative once someone tries to get what they actually asked for. My photo shows her purposely hiding from my camera. If I was so wrong and she was so right, then why hide!?

The pistachio cream cake and ricotta and pistachio cake sound good too, so many desserts. They also have Mitchell's ice cream. Although there is a sound effect that goes off when you step in the door so the owner or staff must've known when I came in, and they also looked up when a few other people went in and out of the store, I was standing at the counter for about 5 mins before they realized I was waiting to order, so that was awkward. I realized the register is set up for grocery store and not like a restaurant so there wasn't a way to enter a tip for the drink order when paying with credit card; they only have a jar for cash tips. It says minimum $5 for credit or debit or they will charge you $0.50. The owner/employee is pretty no nonsense in demeanor. I ordered a $5 hot mocha for 16 oz. The prices are pretty good for hot drinks. For some reason, for iced drinks, which have a smaller selection, the price jumps up significantly between the 12oz and 16oz size. You can get up to 20oz size for the hot drinks. The coffee itself was pretty good, though, and I liked the amount of chocolate in it. Not bad for drinks, you just might have to try to speak up to get the owner's attention if they are busy washing dishes or not looking your way / not at the register.

The pricing is always on par or usually lower than other spots in town. During the pandemic, a beloved clerk there (Kenny, miss you!) told me that a customer had told him they should raise prices on an item, because another market in town was selling it for 30% more or so. Kenny mentioned that to Sam, who firmly said, "no, I'm not raising prices." Our hero. He also stocks things for neighborhood locals if they even mention wanting them. It's the spot for every kid to run into and pick out an ice cream or candy (and maybe tell Amy about their baseball game, she always asks). I went in a few years back after living elsewhere for years, and Sam was so lovely. He also knows my entire family - Mom and Dad go in all the time; Dad is now buying most groceries there; my sister, brother-in-law, and nephews lived in the neighborhood for most of the last years and they travel here weekly now and usually hit up A-1 to get favorites. They have amazing vegetarian and vegan options; the produce is ALWAYS fresh and well-picked (and priced - best price for avocados); the frozen foods are always interesting and tempting; and they have fresh Firebrand bread every day! It's also a really safe space for everyone - kids, adults, all of us. Between the lovely culture he's created, and the insane merchandising skill, and the products... I think Sam might be a magician. Go! You will not be disappointed.

If I have ever been in need of help they've always been there for me. The layout is easy. The signs are in good shape. Just about the same as other Safeways which is nice and familiar. They have a good amount of veggies and fruits that are both organic and not. Well stocked in other areas too. Oh did I mention that they have their gas station too? Like what's not to love! Solid for me. No complaints! 5/(
