Currently my favorite spot to shop outside of actually going to a farmer's market. Reasonable prices - similar to farmer's market and less than the Marketplace. They also seem to have more turnover than the Marketplace, so it's fresher. Their organic Granny Smiths are some of the best I have had - crisp, slightly sour and super juicy. They also carry a variety of microgreens. Interesting small producers in the pantry section. The service is always friendly and efficient. Request: carry maitakes! I paid in cash and the bill was $10.04 and they asked for a nickle. Isn't the credit card fees are more than $0.04 and everyone else pays with a card... I brought back the amount within 2 minutes and they charged me $0.05. The clerk is a member of the family that owns the establishment. Yeah this is petty, but you should never threat customers like this. Word to the wise. read more

This little corner market is small, but mighty. Their fruits and vegetables are reasonably priced and very fresh, with lots of organic options. On my most recent visit, I tried their fresh squeezed OJ, and let me tell you it's delicious! During my previous visit, I saw one of the staff members working hard using this machine to package OJ pints, 1/2 gallons, and full gallons. They have a small rack of discounted items that are extremely ripe or nearing their expiration dates, which is a hit or miss. One time I got really awesome discounted veggies and fruits. Another time, I had to pass on everything as most of the items were way past ripe or almost ready for compost. They partner with couple of local shops for ready-to-eat items. I've seen Burmese Tea Leaf Salads, hummus wraps, and etc. The veggie hummus wrap was delicious. Staff members are friendly. This little market takes cash or card. Great store, terrible service. Cashier just asked me whether I wanted a plastic bag to keep the little bosc pears in and I said no thanks, that I would be gentle. So I come home to find she put them at the very bottom of one bag, with heavy apples and whipped cream on top, mashing the pears. The other paper bag contained my olive bread on the bottom of all the vegetables which were wet and soaked the bread. So for trying to be green and save some plastic. As I was walking away the same cashier noticed my library book and I came to get it from her to be met with a very cold stare. And this place isn't cheap. It was like I was lucky to be there. Got 3 organic white nectarines and 3 Manila mangoes for almost 10 dollars. We are okay with pricey, but pricey for rotten fruits, no thanks. All 3 nectarines were rotten and to think that we went through the pile making sure to pick the best looking ones. I should have put them away after finding most of them bruised or molding. Anyway, so the nectarines weren't all that great, but then we tried the 1.98 inorganic mango - yikes, not very flavorful or sweet. The only reason why we came here was because we didn't want to make a trip to Berkeley bowl and Trader Joe's ran out of organic mangoes for 1.49 each. Dude, the extra gas cost to Berkeley bowl would have been worth it. Lesson learned. read more

The fresh air shopping experience is unique and refreshing. The high quality and large variety of fresh fruit and vegetables resembles a farmer's market' stock and energy. The manager (Jay) is well organized and a generous donor to local schools, fire stations, and other local organizations that need a helping hand. At the moment a seasonal display of pumpkins on haystacks decorates the entrance. When I lived in Oakland and Berkeley and visited Alameda's beaches I made a point of stopping here on the way home. Now I like to ride my bike here and fill my bike basket with fresh produce. Dan's Produce is a gift to our community. There's nothing else like it in Alameda. I remember this place being called Rick and Dan's Produce many years ago. It has been a long time since I've come to this produce stand to purchase their fruits, especially the strawberries. They were a deal, 1/2 flat for $5.00, and were definitely the best looking and best tasting strawberries around. Well, this afternoon after being at the Alameda Theater for the showing of Star Trek Into Darkness, and since I was in the neighborhood, I wanted those strawberries. They did not have the 1/2 flat, but they had organic strawberries going for $2.99 a basket, which was a little pricey, but that is to be expected. The limes were a deal - five for $1.00. (I have just learned how to prepare strawberry agua fresca - ice cold filtered water, sugar, pureed strawberries and fresh lime juice - yummy). What else did I find in Dan's Fresh Produce? I have been searching for the cinnamon raisin bread by Alvarado Bakery at Nob Hill and Lucky's for quite a while. Under my nose and in the refrigerated case was a loaf of the cinnamon raisin bread staring at my face. I grabbed the last pack. Roma tomatoes were $1.29 a pound; zucchinis were going for 99 cents a pound; yellow squash, $1.59 a pound - definitely better deals than what Safeway is offering. Peaches and plums looked pretty good. I will have to check those out later. The cantaloups were huge and I think they were $1.79 each. Since I did not bring a bag for my purchased items, it was no big deal to get a sturdy paper bag with handles for a dime. Geraldine, the cashier, was helpful and she was kind enough not to charge me for a smaller paper bag for my strawberries (did not want to take those little green baskets home with me). All in all, I need to start getting more of my fruits and veggies from Dan's Fresh Produce and to support a small business more so than a large chain grocery store. read more

Lovely CSA box. I picked the standard mixed box. They provide a great variety of in-season fruits and veggies. My latest summer box has plums, peaches, nectarines, oranges, strawberries, blackberries, avocado, lettuce, kale, spinach, carrots, radishes, broccolini, and broccoflower, as well as a bottle of delicious fresh squeezed blood orange juice that I never would have purchased on my own. I've gotten lovely blueberries, chard, cucumbers, leeks, and other things in the past. Quantity-wise, they generally provide one "unit" of any given item: a head of broccoflower, a bunch of kale, a box of berries, a pair of peaches, etc. It doesn't overload you on any one item (though it's definitely not conducive to planned bulk meals). I've had boxes from other places where it looks like they just had too many potatoes in the store that week. This box feels intentionally selected. The box forces me to cook more veggies and snack on fruit, which is great. The price is super reasonable: $40 including delivery in Alameda. It's almost exciting every Wednesday to see what's in it this week! read more

I want to support the independent businesses and I really like Dan's farmer's market but I have a problem when the price reflected on the item is not reflected when it's rung up at the register. I was charged an additional $1.50 for a package of Taro Mochi puff mix (sticker said $4.99) and an additional 0.80 for a bag of flour ( was listed at $7.49 at the shelf). I know prices are higher but I want to know what I am paying for precisely. I can do the math so please don't try to make me feel like I am being taken advantage of. Us Alamedians are incredibly lucky to have this place. The best and most fresh produce on the island at very reasonable prices. I stopped in for a variety of vegetables because I was hosting a get-together. Everything was very fresh and made a great veggie plate. What's more - I was picking out fruit (strawberries, raspberries) for an angel food cake I was making when I was asked if I was finding everything okay. When I explained I was making a cake, the owner took the time to help me pick out the most VIBRANT berries. I'm in and out of Dan's at least once a week. They have an interesting mix of locally sourced produce, cheeses, dry goods, pickly things, breads & flatbreads, a few individually wrapped sweet treats such as pumpkin cake for the local high school kids, and some very delicious, expensive-but-worth-it-if-you-like-something-new-and-delicious, sausages in the freezer case. I grew up with an orchard in my backyard. At Dan's, I can get my hands on a genuinely tree-ripe apricot, nectarine, plum, or a bunch of vine-ripe grapes or tomatoes... the produce *smells* good. It brings tears of nostalgia to the eye sometimes. Very rarely do I run across anything squishy, moldy, or slimy. They take good care of their produce! Dan's also carries Gravenstein apples at a reasonable price, and they're only good for maybe August or September, so if it's that time of year, seek them out! LOCAL TREASURE Since moving to the Bay Area, this has been my go-to produce market. I do not purchase produce anywhere else! The staff is very friendly and knowledgable. Dan the Man himself is frequently around and seeing him in his own family run store is pretty darn cool. You can tell the market is run with pride and integrity. Everyone is always there with a helping hand, either to sample some fruit or carry your bags to your car. The thing I really like about the market is that everything is FRESH! Straight from the farm to you. You don't have to wait for the weekend anymore, It's like going to the Farmers Market any day of the week! Dan will never let crap food go on the sale floor. All the food here is quality. Prices are great. Parking is never hard to find. It's never too crowded. Finding ripe bananas for 49 cents a pound on their sale rack is always nice :) Dan's cares about the community and the food that goes into our bellies. From the front, it looks like any open-air roadside farm stand you could find in your average cross-country driving trip.
