I really love stopping by this Alameda grocery store in the Marketplace on my way back to Oakland. They have produce, many dairy (and non-dairy) selections, healthy snacks, sauces, vitamins, beer, and beauty/ skincare products. It's also in the marketplace where you can find baked goods, meats, cheeses, and wine-- as well as to-go dining options like sushi, Mediterranean food, and salads/ sandwiches. The staff is great and I'm grateful to have even one full-service natural food store in Alameda. Recently they've lost a ton of my business because of substantial price increases--beyond what we've all come to expect. Unfortunately I'm now regularly going all the way to Berkeley for groceries. Ownership isn't local to Alameda--that's ok--but with such serious price hikes, I would expect a neighborhood market to post a note in the store or on social media explaining why they must charge $2-3 more, in some cases, for staple grocery items than almost any other small natural food store in the area. Are these prices keeping the doors open or is there a bit of price gouging going on here? I don't know if the owners understand that half of the residents of Alameda rent and are not well off. The produce is hit and miss, so I can't rely on getting everything I need for one dinner. I know it's hard for a small store, but it seems if the store were more affordable overall, they would have more business and could keep produce moving and fresher. See El Cerrito Natural Grocery for example. Also, there are issues with keeping items in stock and helping with special requests. The body care dept is great about this. But there was one specific grocery item, a certain flavor (high price point, small footprint) that was supposed to be in their regular inventory. It would sell out fast but they would not reorder that flavor for weeks or months. I requested it repeatedly, and the staff admitted they had a bad system: When an item sells out, they take the tag off the shelf. Then the buyer only looks at the tags on the shelf to know which flavors to reorder, so the most popular, sold-out flavors don't get reordered. I repeatedly assured them that if they could solve the problem and restock this flavor with any regularity, I would purchase at least 6 per month. They never solved the issue and finally stopped carrying the whole product line, probably due to low sales. Sigh. read more

I've been shopping here consistently for 9 years ago. They carry a wide selection of items, including bulk goods and cosmetics, and are conveniently located on Park Street with plenty of free parking. I am SO grateful to have a health food store in the neighborhood! Located in the Alameda Marketplace (a public market with about 7 other food-oriented businesses) is a huge plus; there's a cheese / wine shop, bakery, meat and fish vendor, coffee place, flower shop, and several really good take-out restaurants. Yes, the prices at ANG can be a bit higher than the regular grocery store. They're small, curated, and focussed on high quality. I don't rely on ANG for all my groceries. Also, I am willing to pay a bit more to support a small, thriving business that works hard to meet the health food needs of our local community. I love this little marketplace. Every time I'm in Alameda, I somehow end up here. This time, I stopped in to look for Odd Bagels Gluten Free Bagels. They're made locally and can be found in the bread aisle. They were fantastic! Nice and soft and chewy just like a bagel should be! Since I had a few minutes, I walked around and discovered other great finds like Far West Funghi wild mushrooms in the produce section. I'm definitely coming back. read more

So ended up here again 'cause I ran out of MCT oil and collagen for my morning coffee. My partner took pity on me and joined me for emotional support. I'm sure I'll be buying drinks after this. I seriously need to plan better via web orders or by hitting up Sprouts when I'm near one. I'm not sure if it's just me but it seems the price of some items has jumped big time. The place and staff are still annoying as hell and today upon checkout I was instructed there would be one more question for me to answer on the screen. Alameda Natural Grocery is the hippest place to shop for groceries in Alameda. In fact, some peeps come from the "mainland" to shop there.  As I entered the store from their parking lot, on the left was a bulletin board with information about music and children. On the right, there was a bakery display case. I couldn't resist getting a large crispy breadstick with seeds, jalapeno and cheese. I also got some  chocolate chip, molasses, and oatmeal cookies--they were so delicious I almost ate them all before getting back in my car.  They have a fresh fish and meat market where there is a butcher to make those special cuts of meat. Also, the animal products come from animals that are raised humanely. You can actually smell the fish before you buy (who wants to buy old stinky fish?) They have a wide variety of foods for vegans, and people on special diets, too. They steer away from chemically processed foods, including GMO. They have a beautiful selection of organic fruits and vegetables including the largest selection of fresh mushrooms I have seen in the East Bay. They carry just about everything you would expect for a natural food store. Something that surprised me located above their large selection of chocolate bars was some really beautiful large woven baskets. You can see them in my photos. I love coming to this store! read more

An eclectic approach towards a grocery store. For a grocery store of this size they have a wide variety of produce and product that you would not see at the big box stores. I came in for a few minor things and much like Costco I came out with more than I went in for... one important note, they have a chocolate selection that'll make your tastebuds do flips. In addition to this store, it is located in a co-op style building. So go and be prepared to spend more time as there is a plethora of businesses. I found a cheese store that has an amazing amount of different cheeses and other fun things to top your next feast. I can't forget to mention the butcher, bakery stores. So much to see, so much to eat. There is even small eateries for a quick takeout too! So go see for yourself. read more

Kudos to this store for doing a great job during Covid-19! They have hand washing stations and sanitizer outside, so everyone washes/sanitizes hands before entering the building, in addition to wearing a mask. That's a great idea -- I'm sure that greatly reduces changes of getting the virus in there. They limit the number of people in the store, and at max, it feels ok. I'd like it if there were a few fewer people, but I was able to reasonably social distance most of the time, except while waiting to check out, because there are grocery products near enough that people have to go near you to get them. They put tape on the floor in the aisles to show you 6 feet apart, which helps a lot. Customers I've encountered there have generally been pretty good about being polite and attempting to keep social distance. The store is small but they pack a lot of variety in, even so. The produce is all organic and is usually great quality. The employees stocking shelves are very helpful in terms of helping you find things. This isn't the kind of store that has mainstream brands, only the earthy-crunchy stuff. I wanted to buy organic cream cheese and organic American cheese, and they didn't have any cream cheese or American cheese, just lots of vegan "cheese" and other cheeses like cheddar and grated parmesan. But that aside, I was able to do all my grocery shopping here, plus get some toilet paper, dish soap, etc. They have a huge supplement and natural personal care section with knowledgeable employee staffing. The last few times I have been into this store, I have found many shelves missing items in that the shelves were totally empty. Now they have taken away Dave's bread, which is organic bread, and the only kind I or many other people will eat. There were no organic crackers or bread to purchase today. Regarding vitamins, many of the vitamins that I regularly purchase in a particular brand are no longer there, and these shelves look like they're coming to an end. I have been assured by the store that they are not going out of business, but it's hard to believe that when you walk in and have shopped there for such a long time, and have seen that things have changed drastically as far as the stock on the shelves is concerned. This is my favorite store in all of Alameda and I really depend on it to eat healthy and feel secure about it. I mostly love this place. Usually excellent, very fresh produce, decent selection, and friendly cashiers. Mostly. There have been a few abrupt cashiers and other minor annoyances, and of course they are VERY expensive, being a small, independent natural market. But overall I've been fairly happy with them. I try to only get items there that I can't get better or cheaper elsewhere - mainly produce. I'm resorting to Yelp because their website does not have a functional "Contact Us" section as of now, which I've informed them of when I contacted them via private Facebook message. I've sent several private messages to them via Facebook with either feedback or product requests, and they rarely reply. This time, my issue is with their organic strawberries. Twice now, I've spent about $7.99 on a container from Yerena Farms, and they've molded in my refrigerator within 1-2 days of purchase. I never left them out on the counter, I refrigerate immediately upon arriving home. Yes, I'm aware that organic produce has no preservatives, but I've rarely had this issue with Driscoll's organic strawberries from the supermarket. I think theirs start out fresher at the outset. There's something promising, even inspiring, about walking the aisles of the Alameda Natural Grocery. Always an interesting selection of products, from the dark chocolates to the spices, from the fresh fruits and veggies to the canned alternatives. All the coffee beans. There's something grounding about seeing the prices; I'm frequently stopped short midway through reaching for something by the vanity or convenience margin added. Fresh, organic, and even exotic items are available everywhere, at competitive prices, so the ANG needs to step up their game. There's great possibility here, but without the prices to match. I'll keep returning, getting those things which just can't be found elsewhere in the area, but it'll take a lot to make ANG my first shopping stop. read more

I guess my one piece of feedback is get those fruit flies out of the dried mango bin. I've seen them in there every now and then over the last 6 years. Took me several years to fully jump on the organic bandwagon. I scoffed at those who stated organic tastes better but understood the health benefits. Today, I see the clear difference even between organics. For efficiency and a 20-30% savings, I buy from Safeway if I need a mid-week fridge recharge. The Driscoll strawberries looked fantastic and $2 less per package than ANG, but boy were they mushy in texture. The carrots, beautiful again, but flavorless. ANG, yes you cost more, and you have the snootiest patrons, but you REALLY carry superior local organic produce. Thank you for stocking the most obscure produce, a variety of mushrooms, having a fantastic bulk section and making me fall in love with my Bellweather Farms sheep's yogurt. read more

My recent review of Monterey Market has spawned an "I shoulda had a V8 moment", seeing as I have forgotten to review this wonderful grocery market on the heels of having visited Little House Cafe, practically a hop and skip away. I love stores that carry specialized items... like a heat-sinking missile, my ever-roving eyes aim to spot all specialty, independent labels. The organic grapes were so sweet, I had to buy some. And yet another store that sells Christine's Upper Crust goodies from Marin county! Brown Cow and Straus yogurts! Great new find reco'ed by cashier: Virgil's Root Beer. The pack was pricey, but the flavor is wonderful...Awesome. It was here that I purchased my first box of Cafe Fanny granola. That stuff is perfect atop yogurt and flaxseed meal....an empowering breakfast, to be sure. Store layout is a bit of a doozy..some aisles feel 'dead' (do these products move?), and some are wildly awesome...love the organic Castor and Pollux pet products that i used to buy in Portland, and come from OR as well! Great little Italian canned section with peppers and sun-drieds and capers. Opens early. Not the most cost-effective, but please name a place that stocks brand specialty items that is (even TJ's doesn't qualify!) read more

Alameda Natural Grocery is a great little natural food store well worth supporting. They have a decent variety of produce including many that are organic. You can stock up on Ezekiel bread in the freezer section or non-dairy coconut yogurt in the refrigerated section. I appreciate they have a decent bulk section of staples including: oats, nuts, raisins, beans, brown rice, & buckwheat I like bringing my own containers here to fill up in the bulk bins as I have been following a "package light diet" for the last couple years. While prices might be slightly higher overall on many items compared to Rainbow, Berkeley Bowl, or Sprouts one area where Alameda Natural Grocery shines is that they have a decent variety of monthly specials that are discounted. These are well worth seeking out. For example for a recent mostly special they had 16 oz coconut water for .49 cents, discounted organic apples for $1.99 a lb, & .99 cent Lara Bars. The staff that works at Alameda Natural Grocery are very friendly & helpful making my frequent trips here a delight. read more

They have they kind of groceries I buy - natural, organic, etc. decent selection for a smaller store. But expect to pay quite a bit more than Berkeley Bowl. Prices seem higher than Whole Foods. Produce is particularly expensive. When I was there they were out of bananas. What? Bananas? And the Alameda crowd just gets more snooty. read more

The staff here seem genuinely unhappy. My son used to work here and the management creates the opposite of a team feeling. Because the management does not seem to care about their employees, the ripple effect is that employees do not really care about their work. They hire young people who do not know any better. Another employee recently asked for a day off, 3 weeks in advance, and her manager said "no". Seriously? She wanted to take a weekend trip with her mom. Another reviewer says that "service seems stretched thin" this is true because they keep firing people. Maybe if they cultivated a team atmosphere of caring and took some actions to uplift and invest in their employees, they could actually hold on to workers. Do not shop here. read more

The parking lot is designed to inspire homicide. The spaces are too narrow. The parking lot is shared with Walgreen's, restaurants and other businesses and the accrued frustration of my fellow drivers is volatile. Street parking is packed around all these businesses. My advice? Park as many blocks away as you can carry. You'll thank me later. Otherwise, cool store, great produce and other natural foods and products, adjacent to awesome butcher, bakery and cheese shop. Not cheap, I call it "the food boutique". read more

I love this place for their grocery selection, but this review is specifically for their new program Paperless Parties. I've used them a couple of times now to disposable utensils, plates, etc at a couple of our parties and it's been great. Pickup has been a breeze, everything has come clean, organized and ready for use. The actual items appear to be Preserve brand, so a very durable plastic. And the napkins were simple yet fancy and they came folded, so like I said, ready for use. The signage they provide was helpful for our guests to know where to dispose their used goods and was a great topic for conversation. And we did our own washing so it was free--amazing. The staff was super communicative and now the reservation process has been streamlined. Highly recommend! Would use again! read more

Went here yesterday after having some coffee next door. Got lured in by all the sugary goods near the cash registers. Grabbed a Kerri's Kreation chocolate chip cookie and Justin's milk chocolate peanut butter cup. I don't know if I ever saw Justin's in milk chocolate before? I do know mostly at Safeway Justin's is always sold out. Happy to have it here in both varieties and cheap too. On sale .50 less than anywhere. Although after I ate it I realize that I prefer dark chocolate, I enjoyed the opportunity of trying this different variety. My Kerri's Kreation (hope I spelled that right) is right near the cash registers. It is in a small glass case and there are tissues above to grab them with. The cookie was super soft and beautifully 'created.' No funny flavors. Instantly I had the thought to buy them all... take them all home. Spread them out on my cookie sheet and pretend that I baked them so I could take the credit. So much to choose from here. Just mentioned two almost random products above but they do represent this store well. Both are unique and of high quality. This is the stuff you find at high end stores. Pleased to have this Market so close to home. With all the stores combined it represents a Whole Foods almost... only more unique. read more
