5* This is such a great local market to get groceries. I will say however that it is slightly more expensive if you buy everything on your grocery list here so you can be more selective as needed. In the current situation, it is a blessing to have this place because they have really good safety precautions, everything is sanitised, masks are worn and the lines are never too long. I feel safe here! The selection of things is fantastic 10/10. You can get bread, veggies, fruits and even toilet paper! The wide variety of local and organic products is what keeps me going back! Its always great to shop locally and support the business that adds so much value to the community! Love this neighborhood market with their beautiful produce and complete selection of groceries. Expensive but good meat and fish, often with items you can't find elsewhere (wild salmon). I love coming to this little market whenever I'm looking for something fancy. I would say this isn't the place to get all your essentials, but it's great for treats. They carry Cowgirl Creamery cheese, high quality meats, ACME bread, and delicious ready-made sushi that's way better than any other grocery store's sushi. I always find excellent and fresh produce here too, like heirloom tomatoes. It's a little pricier than other grocery stores, so come here for special occasions only! I usually just grab some nice bread, cheese, and meat. It's a small market so it's never super crowded, always plenty of parking too. There's a great little cafe and plant store next to it too so it's a perfect Saturday morning outing. read more

As soon as we saw Village Market on board with Instacart we ordered a pie that we've been searching for over the last three years. My spouse and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary, and our favorite dessert is Strawberry Rhubarb pie. They delivered an artisan made pie at such a very reasonable price, and we are both over the moon about the quality and delicious, authentic homestyle taste! In an overwhelming overpriced neighborhood, I often wondered how the BBQ might be. It's legit! Bro is outside, grilling on the hardwood, kicking up Chicken, Flank Steak, and Pork Ribs. Dry rub and delicious. Buy or make your own sauce. The sign says "3:30-6:30pm," however it's wrapping up by 5:30pm. There's packaged serving inside, but I was lucky to catch the last Flank Steak. $15.99 a pound! Saw the 7 bone-in Pork Ribs for the same price. read more

All the negative reviews here seem to be people who have a weird relationship with Covid. I've driven by Village Market countless times, and have always been interested and wanted to know what is inside! Well I'm glad I finally stepped inside. They have a lot of local items and overall fun things to shop for. I picked up this habanero salsa they have that is to die for, the perfect blend of spicy and refreshing. Also grabbed some guacamole and local tortilla chips. Made for a fun afternoon! When I went they had these gelato popsicles, which aren't there permanently. I got the tangelo flavor and my wife got the blackberry swirl. Both of them were great. This is the perfect place to stop if you want to make a special meal or enjoy a picnic somewhere. They have a great selection of meat and cheese for charcuterie if you are in the mood for that. I would definitely stop by if you want to support a local grocery store, but more so if you want to support yourself, because there's something to be enjoyed by all types of people! read more

I was trying time avoid writing a bad review bc it's a family owned business and it's a cute place but after spending over 350 on 3 bags of groceries with nearly half of it thrown away due to expiration I gad to let the public know. I am so disappointed in our shop I hate throwing food away and don't make a point of checking expiration when I shop unless it's on meat. I mean we shouldn't have to check the expiration of a bottle of soda or a yogurt if it's expired it shouldn't be on the shelf. But that's not the case here. No at village market you must check the date in every item. We bought Elleno yogurt, a coca-cola, strawberries, chobani yogurt, candies nuts, caramel popcorn, several packages of fresh pasta. All was stale and expired. I will steer clear of here in the future. It was a very sad experience to one spend so much above regular retail and then have to throw a ton of it away. read more

I've been shopping at Village Market since I was a child - over 3 decades. Yes, it is pricey - it is a small business. The main reason I am giving it 1 star is the strange attitude of the majority of the people who work there. For a small, local place, there is a coldness and tense attitude to the majority of the staff. A few are friendly, but the majority are not. Barely a smile, no hello, silence at the register if you try to make small talk. I've experienced this multiple times in the past, but since I enjoy their sushi and other niche homemade foods, I've let it slide. Today's experience, however, was the final straw. I walked in and was approached by a staff member, who told me that "the coronavirus is getting worse" and that I needed to wear a mask. California has been open for weeks now and I shop at multiple places that do not require masks. But fine, this is your business and you have the right to require masks if you so choose. If you are going to do this, then you should put a prominent sign up at the store entrance that you are requiring all customers to wear masks (regardless of vaccination status) so that your customers are aware. Instead, I felt shamed and like I was talked down to in such a condescending way. I asked the employee if I should leave the store, and was told they would provide me a mask. The employee handed it to me without a word and walked away as I took it and put it on. The entire experience was so uncomfortable and unnecessary. Run your business as you see fit, but put up a sign at the door if you want to not be open like the majority of businesses in the country and in California. Do not publicly humiliate your customers and patronizingly tell them about a pandemic the whole world is aware of. Tone matters, and frankly, after this experience I will never go back. read more

I used to live across the street from The Village Market. I rented an in-law from a family on Buena Vista off Broadway. I was working in Oakland and didn't have a car for years. I often would just cross the street for groceries after a long day after getting back on a bus late at night or walking because I didn't have bus fare. Probably didn't have bus fare because I was shopping at Village Market, hah. They have an awesome selection of cheese and foods prepared by their deli. There is a little salad bar and all kinds of unique items. I would describe Village Market as a little gourmet market. I used to have the coolest Village Market reusable burgundy bag. I bought two. Okay, ya done it, you devilish little minx, you! You stole my heart because in my moment of desperation, you offered cashback. I could smell the sweet and tempting aroma of fresh, RIPE fruit and produce but was in such a rush I just couldn't afford to get caught up in your tantalizing web. After realizing the neighboring Valero wasn't a minimart but a mechanic, and therefore was void of the ATM I so desperately needed, I walked in and asked the cashier if they offered cashback. They did, and as I reached for a water bottle he pointed out that there was candy in the next aisle. Determined not to become diabetic by age 27, I refused and kept my 69 cent water in an effort to keep costs low. (Damn, this turned out to be way cheaper than an ATM fee anyway! Super score!) The cashback limit was $60 and I only needed $40, and the super sweet cashier Arturo slyly grinned before asking, "That's all? Just $40?" Between him encouraging me to get candy and pull out more money, I think that as sweet as he is I had better just stay away from him... If we end up best friends I know he's going to get me in a lot of trouble: excessive spending, cavities, etc. read more

I just can't say enough good things for the Village Market. Ever since we moved to this area many years ago, this was and continues to be, our convenient and close by market of choice. Today, we were given free samples of oranges by the super duper kind produce man, Mike. Everyone here are so genuine and sincere. They are familiar, personal, and sincere. By the way, the oranges were soooooooooo luscious and sweet. My folks and I enjoyed them so much, we're going to go back and buy more! Get the oranges at Village Market!!! It's soooooo delicious, and quenches your parched tongues! They also have organic watercress! It's so difficult to find organic watercress. Whole foods even fails in that area. The samples are always abundant and eclectic. The Village Market is family run, so it's nice to support these types of honest peeps! :) read more

Came back here again while visiting friends. We stopped in here because I was to make dinner for us. What I like about this place is its convenience to my friend's house. The variety isn't all that great because the market is really quite small. Some of the produce isn't the freshest (garlic all had dents in them) and the pricing is on the high side. However, when you want something and don't want to go far then this is a really good place to go. They carry grass-fed beef as well as some other gourmet produce which is a plus in my book! There is also stuff out for sampling. I tried some of the cheeses which were rather delicious. They also had cake out for tasting but I didn't try that. read more

I am an avid shopper at Village. It has a nice small local vibe to it. All of the employees here understand that probably 90% of the customers are locals who regularly do their shopping there. They know most of them by name (or at least recognize them as regular shoppers) too. The employees here are warm and friendly. I have never seen a negative attitude here. They go out of there way to please the clientele, and they all seem happy too. That makes the shopping experience here @ Village a more pleasant experience. Perusing the aisle you will notice that their offerings cater to the more affluent clientele who reside near the store. Imported butter and cheeses, higher end meats, hard-to-get spices, etc. etc. While Village is small, it sure doesn't lack in packing almost everything you would be looking for in a market. Their prices on some items may be a bit higher than other supermarkets in the area but the convenience of being able to drive down the street to pick up items in a pinch is well worth it. I call it a relatively minor 'convenience fee'. Their meat department and glass counter/case is well stocked. High quality proteins are available here. The dairy section in the back wall of the store is well stocked. Lots of higher quality selections here. The cheeses available here are ditto. The breads available are not your average supermarket selection. All Primo stuff here folks. The best part of this store however is their stellar produce section. While it is small and does have a rather limited selection, the prices are in line with almost everyone else. The quality of their fruits & vegetables is as good as (if not better in some cases) as the iconic Berkeley Bowl Market. I love, love, love shopping here! read more

I rode my bicycle up to village market today after locking my bike up I go inside as I am browsing through the store I noticed that employees of the store are literally following me around threw out the store ! It was very creepy! While I was trying to decide which sandwich I was going to purchase this short guy that works in the butcher department walks up to me and asked me in a rude ass voice can I help you? I said no then he goes pfff with his mouth! He whole energy was weird as fuck ! I feel like since I was wearing a coat and had a backpack on they were profiling me !! Based on the way I looked I was being discriminated on and harassed for no reason!! All the staff in the store were acting snobby and rude for no reason! I was riding my ebike after locking it up I had an empty backpack on ! I wearing a backpack a reason to follow someone around? I don't think so! I bought 2 sandwiches! I was not rude or nasty to anyone yet I was followed around and treated like shit for the way I looked! Wearing a backpack and a black coat! Did they think I was a thief? If so why? This place wins over the nearby supermarets by being open at 7am, which works extremely well for me on the weekend, and by being just the right distance to walk to and back from my place. Even when "busy", parking isn't usually a problem, and there's never huge lines at checkout. For vegan options, they have loads of produce out front, and more inside, as well as a couple of vegan prepared items that are worth trying. The major point against this place is that it's a little pricey, and makes me reluctant to spend more money here, so usually I only get a few things. read more

Update: the owner of Village market has reached out to me, and I appreciate his public and private response to my review. I am glad his staff will receive the customer service training I had thought was lacking, and I will continue to shop at his establishment. Original post follows: Dear Village Market, How I've enjoyed going to you and snagging expensive fare for meals on the go and specialties I'd forgotten when near my parents' home. How convenient you are and how wide your selection of premade items, hard to find items, and my favorite delectable to-go sushi. I can't imagine how much money I and my family have spent at your store, your location is so isolatedly perfect and convenient to homes. Despite your high prices (because hey, you CAN!) I've frequented you whenever in the area. But then tonight, Village Market, you betrayed me. In a rush to get home after work, without dinner planned, I stopped in to pick up some premade food to heat for my husband. (I of course, expected to enjoy your sushi.) I bought a little single serving chicken pot pie, and brought it home in good faith, as you'd never steered me wrong before. I reheated it till hot through in our oven, and served it to my trusting and hungry husband, who was feeling perfectly fine but quite hungry at the time. Twenty minutes later, he's bent over the toilet, where he has remained for the past hour and a half, blasting violently until dry heaves wreck through his poor body. In short, he has wicked food poisoning. I called you quickly upon realizing what was occurring, and knowing the only culprit could be the chicken pot pie. I spoke with two of your employees, and told them very politely and with great concern that the pie had caused my husband's intense illness, and that they should probably take the rest off the shelves to prevent further contamination. I was queried on if the pie had expired. Seriously? No no, I get it, I'm in customer service so I didn't get snippy, that's a valid question, though poor on you, Village Market, for not knowing if your wares were expired on the shelves. The pie alleged to be fit through tomorrow, December 24. Perhaps, though, I was too lackadaisical on the phone, too concerned with the wellbeing of potential others, because for my (and more importantly, my husband's) pains, I was given a "well, sorry." Strike one was the offending pie. Strike two and three were for the pathetic attempt (was one even made?) at customer service on the phone. Serving third-party created contaminated food isn't enough to make me furious, but the blasé attitude of the "oh well" tone over the phone is enough to lose a loyal customer, and create this lovely little rant. As I mentioned, I'm in customer service. A more appropriate response would have been shock, sympathy, and consternation, followed by assertions that the manager would be called immediately and appraised of the situation, and if they were not on duty, to have my information taken so a personal outreach could be made when the manager or higher-ups did come on duty. No such effort was made. I get that it's late on a near-holiday, but please note that food poisoning lasts for goddamn days, which means my poor husband will likely be sick through Christmas from the damn pie. Maybe I should have been nasty on the phone, or expressed my frustration that instead of a lovely holiday, he now faces one-on-one time with the unforgiving porcelain god. I found myself becoming less and less complacent with each passing audible heave from the bathroom, and thus penned this somewhat dissatisfied review. I await a response.
