Bongos is affiliated with the Bellwether hotel. The location is absolutely amazing and right on the beach. Most of the tables are literally in the sand. You are paying for the beach/location/ambience. Food and drinks not as good. Always live music it seems! We stayed at the Bellwether three nights and every night had a different musician, all were great! Some confusion on where the hostess stand is and if it is seat yourself of wait for seating - not much signage. All of a sudden a staff member swooped in and saved the day with bringing pagers and taking names. There are two bars, they have lots of cocktails. Mocktail wise, not many options. The waitress said they can only do a pina colada or daiquiri. My husband got the Bongos Kool-Aid drink and he said it was just ok. Menu wise is pretty decent but food wise was bleh. We came for dinner, so not sure how their breakfast tastes. Went with the 3 amigos which includes nachos, queso, guac, and salsa. The salsa tasted like a jar. The queso was warm and gooey and the guac was good. I got the mahi dinner which included a good size of mahi which was cooked nicely. But the rice was pathetic and the arugula salad was just a garnish, not an actual salad of anything or tasted like anything. My husband got the rice bowl with chicken and he said it was good. Finally I found the margarita I've been looking for! My boyfriend and I stopped here as I remember this bar from a few years ago. I was visiting with my son, his girlfriend and her family and we loved it here. Brian made the perfect skinny margarita without sweet sour and with jalapeños! Perfection! Wonderful beach location. Lots of seating and a great stage. Today there is live music by Santana & Joe! Amazing! I remembered the fabulous whipped cream that they used on our drinks. Came on a Friday just after sunset. It's a very casual beach bar & grille. Nothing fancy but it's a nice ambience with live music and you get to dine right on the beach. Service was great and food came out quickly. We started with the fish spread and it had a generous 2 scoops. It wasn't spicy but it tasted fresh. I had the coconut shrimp as a meal and there were about 10 shrimp, nice and crispy with orange spread. My husband ordered the portobello sandwich that came with a side of fries. I wasn't planning on coming back here after my last review but my friend was hungry and this was the closest restaurant to us at that time. We came for an early dinner on the beach. We got seated almost immediately but the waitress took forever to come by once we sat. Our drink and food orders seem like to take forever even though it wasn't busy. The bar was busy but the tables were pretty empty since it wasn't a good beach day weather. The drinks were good and strong. Definitely recommend getting one! The food was meh. I ordered the fish tacos which was mediocre. Can't say too much about it other than it wasn't bad but it wasn't something I would necessarily want to go back for. The fries were good but it's hard to mess up on that right? The prices were expected for a meal on the beach. I didn't know this but they have free parking in their lot so definitely try to find one before paying for the meters spaces. read more

We were pleasantly surprised by Bongos. We stayed a week at the Bellwether hotel, which is where this beach restaurant is located. The hotel itself was an unmitigated disaster, but Bongos was actually a very good experience. I was impressed with the food quality; the Cuban sandwich was one of the best I've had, and the pork belly nachos were equally outstanding. The service was about what you'd expect over a busy 4th of July holiday, but as busy as it was, we still got our food relatively quickly. You can't beat the setting of Bongos. It's been a long time since I first experienced Bongos; 2013 to be exact. My brother threw a birthday bash on the beach. Bongos roped off a section of the beach tables and arranged a buffet, complete with servers and open bar; the sunset was an added bonus. With about 30+ guests, I can say we had an amazing time but I couldn't tell you about the food or drinks; jus the laughs and craziness.... but here we are now thinking, lets check out a beautiful sunset with dinner and frozen cocktails... Since it's still Covid times, we called first to make sure they are open and if reservations or anything like that is needed... what they didn't bother to tell us, is that the Gulf Boulevard (the main road passing through St Pete Beach) is under construction killing traffic and making it very difficult to finding/getting to parking PLUS the property that Bongos is on (at the Bellweather Beach Resort) is under construction and there is no parking (something that we should've been told). After wasting too much time, my wife hiked to the restaurant while I waited in a condo parking lot down the street and the hostess told me over the phone where the employee parking is and sent me there (thank goodness for her). Once here and sitting at a table with our shoes off and toes in the sand (with a lot of other families doing the same), all our earlier frustrations were long forgotten. We started out night with a round of cocktails (pina colada for myself) and some appetizers to share. The SMOKE FISH SPREAD was decent but not great. Served with the tortilla chips instead of crackers wasn't a great choice on their part but the dip itself was tasty. The AHI TUNA with wontons was very good. When it was just about time for the sun to fall into the ocean, numerous tables (including us) got up and walked onto the beach for better sunset photographs. When we returned to our table, we were ready for round 2 of drinks (Bahama Mama this time). For dinner my wife had their LOADED NACHOS (blah at best) and my son had a CHEESE QUESADILLA (not impressed); lucky for me, my dish was much better, BLACKENED MAHI TACOS. It seems most of the people at the beach tables come early to have their food before the sunset and once the sun sets they are gone. While we ate dinner, most the beach tables were open but the bar and live music stage up on the deck was very busy still. Even with the parking and traffic fiasco, and the drinks and food being average, our time here was awesome... the view can't be beat and the staff are all smiles. read more

The seafood trio appetizer was good, but I wouldn't order it again. The wings were actually very tasty and tender. LOVE dining with our feet in the sand. The only place I've discovered where I can eat high quality food on the sand while listening to live music. Danto was performing the day we visited; what a good singer and entertainer. Parked 2 blocks away in their smaller private lot while their large parking lot is undergoing construction. EXCELLENT! We are staying at the Bellwether Resort so super convenient but also, not much wait time for seating and food was pretty quick. The main thing about this review is that the food was AMAZING! The peel & eat shrimp was bar far the best I've had and my husband said the same. He got the shrimp Mac & Cheese and I got the grilled mahi mahi. Delicious!!! The view is perfect and the live singer/guitarist was cool too. It's our first time here at St Pete and our first night. Wow, I can't even put into words how much we LOVE Bongos!! My mom and I came from Indiana for our fall break/my bday. The food and drinks are truly made with love. The staff made us feel like family. They went above and beyond for my birthday and our entire trip. The scenery is picture perfect. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, happy hour- everything is perfect. Waited 20 MINUTES (!!!) for some one to see that we needed to order. We were going to leave but really wanted a drink and some food. Just know it's beach time here. Our waitress seemed stressed and busy but can't imagine what was taking so much of her time. Food was finally delivered a good hour after we got there and was just okay. We knew we were getting subpar food coming in but really wanted to be surprised. Caesar wrap was drippy and soggy. Fish tacos were fishy and scary to eat (food poisoning potential?!?). Mac and cheese with pork was so good but more hangover food than beach food. My ranch water had little to no alcohol and I asked for less grapefruit juice and I think they added more in spite of the ask. 100/10 I wish this was my local bar. Had a couple different drinks over the course of our vacation and every single one was top notch. Also it is right on the beach. One of my favorite casual places on St. Pete Beach for food, fun, drinks, live music and an incredible view. The dishes here are tasty and not bad in price. Our table had fish, chicken and shrimp tacos. As other reviewers shared, the "Wholly guacamole" is in an individually packaged cup, not made fresh, but was still delicious on the tacos. The vodka lemonade drink special, with strawberries was tasty but, wow...really strong! Maybe it was because I hadn't eaten yet, but one drink went straight to my head. Good thing I had a mile walk back to my hotel to "sweat it out!" I loved the acoustic guitar music and relaxed atmosphere here. The food is ok - sandwiches, wraps, burgers, salads, pasta, some seafood options and a kid menu. There's a good chance you'll even see wedding at the Grand Plaza since Bongos is situated within earshot to one of the hotel's two designated wedding spots on the beach. You have your choice of a table literally on the beach with your toes in the sand, tables on an upper deck area with a bubbling water feature, a covered area, or a stool at the bar. No matter where you sit, you will hear the live music being played and feel the ocean breeze in your hair. Their menu is pretty large and covers all the bases of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, wraps, and entrées. We started with the seafood trio, which was the star of the meal - 2 perfectly cooked & chilled jumbo shrimp, smoked fish dip & water crackers, and 3 scallops drizzled with an orange balsamic glaze. Triple YUM! For dinner I had the grilled grouper sandwich with fries and my friend had the mahi-mahi sandwich and fries. Both were very large and honestly the bread was too much for us, so we took the bread off and just ate the beautiful fish. We will definitely be back to enjoy the atmosphere and food. This is the perfect spot to grab a table after a day at the beach and watch the sunset while sipping a cocktail, which is exactly what we did. I had the Bongos Sunset in a souvenir plastic cup. Yummo! Ingredients shown in the attached photo. Parking can be tricky, but we were able to check in with security and get a spot in the garage. Bongos is situated in a hotel and they guard their parking spots very closely. The paper we were given stated that they will announce license plate numbers from time to time and you must check in and claim your vehicle or else they will have it towed. They must have problems with people parking there to spend the day at the beach and not patronize the hotel or restaurant. We were there an hour and a half and we didn't hear them call out any license plate numbers while we were there. Service was super friendly, but they were so busy, there were a few missteps, like we were given our appetizer, but had to flag down the hostess to get plates and utensils. Also, our server said he would be back to refill our waters and never returned. Another flag of the poor hostess... We really didn't mind because our server was so sweet and obviously slammed. There are several decks if you don't want to sit on the sand. All the tables have umbrellas. The food is very good and portions are generous. The blackened mahi soft tacos were spicy, but good. The turkey, bacon and gouda sandwich was delicious. The fries that come with the entrees are crispy and very good. The bar drinks are reasonably priced and a good size. The frozen rum runner was well made. The strawberry daiquiri I had previously was also very good. The servers and food runners were working hard to take care of the customers. They have a large parking lot in front of the entrance and also below. There is no charge, but it is first come. She looked angry that we wanted to order drinks. If you don't want to make money and get tips don't work in a bar as a bartender. Maybe 7 people in the entire bar area and two tables of four.
