I honestly really tried to be polite during my time there, but I am pretty disappointed. I decided to make a same day appointment at around 12pm for a relaxer at 4pm. I chose to go for it because the site was offering a 15% discount at certain times of the day so I intentionally left work early for this deal. When I arrived, she was stunned to see me. I explained that I made an appointment for a relaxer at 4pm. She said that she never got a notification (insinuating I was lying) and pulled up her phone to check and... shocker I made the appointment lol. She even said that this same situation with not getting notifications for appointments happened to her twice a few days ago. Why wouldn't you take the time to fix something like that??? I literally ended up helping her during my appointment and turned her notifications on her phone lol. Backtracking a little to when I first got there, I explain that I grabbed the appointment last minute because there was a 15% off deal. She didn't know what the hell I was talking about and wouldn't honor that deal initially. She then told me that if I wanna wait she can do my hair at 5:30pm after she picks up her son from school. I was hesitant but I had already went out of my way to get there and had paid a deposit already, which she did offer to refund me if I chose to back out. So I agreed to wait in my car til she got back. She texts me at 5:25pm (five minutes before we're supposed to meet) saying that she will be there in about 20 minutes. At this point I am waiting 2 hours to get my hair done. I text her back saying I understand that these things can happen but I would really appreciate some negotiation when it comes to pricing as I have been waiting for 2 hours now. She says we can definitely figure something out, and meets me back at the salon with her son with a terribly mean look on her face. She was pretty rude at first about it at all saying that I chose to stay and wait and that she gave me the option to back out. Eventually, she agreed to honor the deal that was on her site. I genuinely was trying to be so kind about it and understanding that these things can happen. I kept it peaceful and let her start doing my hair, which was a doozy. She was smothering my hair with relaxer and throwing it on with her hands in a rush. The end result was very sticky and stiff, which I know can be common but isn't the norm if you're doing it right. She definitely put way too much relaxer in my hair and was in a rush to wash it out, leaving my hair sticky and with residue. I appreciate her still making the time for me, but my entire evening was wasted just waiting for an end result I didn't like. I didn't make it home til 9pm and just felt a bit defeated. read more

I have a personal rule before reviewing places: always go at least twice! I'm SO glad that I waited until my second visit to write this review because compared to the first time I visited...I am sorely disappointed. First, let me describe the type of hair I have. I have what most would consider type 4 hair and it is coarse and extremely thick. I have tested in the 98% percentile for the amount of hair I have on my head and I have yet to meet a stylist who does not comment how how thick my hair is, so I am very aware of how much/what type of hair I have on my head. I say this to say that Bonitas is THE ONLY place I have ever been that has ever used it as an excuse for their lack of talent/skills. Both times I've been here they always have so much to say about how much hair I have, how it's "not good hair" and how I don't have the "type" of hair to pull off a style. However, as someone who has been featured in quite a few hair shows and has worn MANY different types of elaborate hairstyles I do not appreciate being told that my hair is the reason for their inadequacies. I'm a creature of habit so I tend to get the same hairstyles over and over again lol. One of my go to styles is large Senegalese twists. I showed the the picture that I have always used in the past and immediately I'm told I don't have the kind of hair to make it that big. I'm immediately confused and ask what they would suggest instead. THE ENTIRE TIME, they made disparaging comments about my hair in front of me while ignoring the fact that they were damn near bald themselves. I ended up getting VERY BEAUTIFUL Twists that, although longer and smaller than I asked for I liked a lot. I received many compliments on them even once they started to get old looking. It was enough for me to go back once I was ready for a new hairstyle. I've attached a picture because I really was happy with it. On my second visit I brought in a screenshot of a hairstyle from a stylists Instagram whom I used to frequent in NY. It was a simple two braid style. So imagine my surprise when I hear that they won't be able to do it AGAIN because of my hair type. And even suggested that I relax my hair if I wanted those results. Unbeknownst to them IT WAS A PICTURE OF YOURS TRULY!! I kept my mouth shut because I like to let people look stupid all by themselves. Did they say this before I got in the chair? No. They said this after 45 minutes!! They spritzed so much water in my blown out hair that it shrunk and ripped out so much of it I had a headache afterwards. I mean, honestly, who doesn't know how to comb from the bottom to the top? Especially dealing with black hair. The next day, a friend of mine did the SAME EXACT STYLE for me with the bag of hair that I was charged $10 for that wasn't even used. It's a shame because the owner seems to be the most professional person on the phone, but wasn't there either time I went. Looking at the other reviews I suggest she invest in finding more professional stylists that are actually talented, don't blame their patrons for falling short or are rude when dealing with natural hair. When I discovered Bonitas, I was excited to find another (seemingly) highly-rated black-owned business so close to my house. First attempt: I went to the website, saw the appointment times I was targeting were open, and called ahead because I had a few questions. She informed me that they were closed on the day I had in mind, despite the website stating otherwise. She apologized, and informed me that I would have to make another appointment online. I chocked it up to confusion, and thought it was just a mistake. Second attempt: I made an appointment online as requested, received a confirmation email, and made my way to the shop a while later. It appeared to be closed, so I hit the doorbell and waited- no response. After a few minutes I called the business. She answered, I inquired about my appointment, and she then informed me they were closed. I informed her that I scheduled an appointment online, and she just said that they were closed. She didn't apologize, nor did seem apologetic at all. I thought maybe she had read the date wrong, but then she started to blame me for not calling to confirm prior to leaving...and then she hung up. It was totally unprofessional. I returned home, and decided to read the reviews thinking maybe I was an outlier, but and they all seemed to echo the same sentiment- atrocious customer service. I called on a whim to see if they did dreadlock re-twists and the person on the phone said yes. She quoted me $65 and up with an extra $10 of i wanted my hair washed. She also said they were thinking about closing early. I washed my hair (c'mon! $10) and got my butt in gear. Easily found parking on the street. As soon as I walked in, a beautician (I assume) pointed me to a chair and said' "go over there she's waiting for you." So I dutifully walked over and sat down in the chair and waited. Another lady tells me to sign a form relinquishing them of any liability and it talks about braiding. I wasn't there for braiding but signed it anyway. It was about 15 minutes before the woman who ended up twisting my hair called out 'hey' and asked if i needed my hair washed. I said I didn't. She came over and got started. I have a tender scalp and said that before we began. Must've fallen on deaf ears because my hair was pulled and parted, smeared with some kind of mixture, (later found out it was gel and another product) then twisted. She was quick. Put me under the dryer and I was well on my way. I'm not sure if I'd return here. I had a headache when I was done. I am giving it a 2 because half of my hair is beautiful and i know the other half could have been equally as beautiful if she was not rushing. I arrived on time for my appointment and their seemed to be some sort of confusion. They told a lady she needed to get up because she didn't have an appointment and i did. They start doing my hair. The lady who is now waiting, after a while gets up walks past me and says "bald headed bitch" no one said anything to her she sat back down. About 10 Minutes later she gets up gets in my face and threatens me several times. Tells me "oh I'm going to get in your personal space." "If you want to get up now and for outside I'll beat your ass." Mind you i don't know this woman, have never seen this woman and don't know why she tried to attack me. This whole thing happen and no one in the shop ask this woman to leave after. She just sat down called me a bitch over and over and just looked at me while i was getting me hair down. I paid close to $200 for micro braids & came out with box braids. I kept asking my stylist to reduce the size of the hair and each time she would say "it's okay" & continue to braid the same large braids. The policy is that they charge for length, not size and the stylists said I would be charged if they got smaller. But both the ladies who worked on my hair had an idea of what was beautiful for them (big, thick, full braids) and not what I (the paying customer!) requested repeatedly from them. They made me feel awful for speaking up - I've never felt this used and un-beautiful in a business. All I wanted were simple braids so I didn't have to worry about all of the hair I already have when I exercise. I walked out feeling like I had a mop on my head. Thanks for imposing your standard of beauty on my head. Also important, the "FREE" meal that they provide is included in your fee. You can only order up to $10 (and most people don't go over) and there is no option to remove that "FREE" meal from your total price, so in the end they make a profit and you pay for a required lunch. I think Kemi is a lovely person which is fine, but this is a business. I've been to worse, less professional shops that charged much higher-but at the very least of these terrible experiences - at the very minimum - I got the style I paid for. I'm from out of state and I decided I needed my hair professionally braided back again because I wear wigs. Unfamiliar with hair braiding salons in mpls I came across this salon on apple maps. I usually just dutch braid it back on each side but it makes my wigs bulkier. I came here because it's near my apartment complex. So I was very anxious about coming here but was recommended by a friend. That being said, they did a lovely job with my box braids. My only complaint is that they would not give me a price estimate until I came into the shop. I paid $310 for waist length knotless box braids, which I feel is a bit overpriced especially when I'm paying in cash. This is not my first time having them installed and I've never paid more than $250. But, two women were working on my hair so I can understand the expense. That is my only downside. The braids were done VERY fast. I was in the chair at 1045 and out by 245pm. It looks great so far. They also were very careful to ask about if they were braiding too tight. Let me first say I love my braids. They are cute. With that being said, this was my first time trying this salon. Everyone was polite and very friendly. My only issue was the woman who did my hair, Dora, was very heavy handed. I was convinced she was trying to pull my hair out or snap my neck with the way she kept pulling my hair. When she wasn't doing that. She was braiding the braids so tight it felt like I would have hair that will come out along with the braid when I took it out. Like I said, I love how my hair came out, but not sure why she felt like she had to yank my hair to get the braid in good. I had a headache for two days after that, and my scalp is still tender. If I hadn't paid over $200 for my braids(I was quoted $150 over the phone) I'd take them down. The wait time was twice as long 2.5 hours. As a customer I do not expect to debate with you over price. If the extra bun cost more, you should have told me beforehand. My daughter had a braider stop doing her hair and another braider finished it. Your braider showed attitude from the beginning. You never apologize for the original braider walking out on my daughter nor the excessive wait time. So I got my hair in Senegalese twist for the first time on 4/20/19 for a festival. A week later several of the twist came out and someone had to redo them. I went back to the shop the next month to have the edges redone. One of the staff members was debating with me that she didn't braid the back of my hair. I was very shocked that this happened. I was a first timer with extensions and I told the stylist I wanted to cover my heat top to bottom because I have thinning hair. She spent 15 minutes arguing with two of the other stylists ( I think they are stylists) about who's job it was to bride my hair and why they were sitting on their buts instead of braiding my hair. I should have walked out then. I went home with a painful scalp that gradually got worse but was told that was " normal after braiding". After waking up the morning I was in even more pain and looked closer in the mirror an started to cry. Blood was leaking around some of the hair folicals the front edges were completely Physical before it's even the smallest hair is in the front of my scalp pulled into the weave. It looked extremely unnatural. The way she styled my hair prior to my leaving cover those edges but the way it was without curling the extensions made me look like a store manikin. Where at the rows of hair were sewen in the back and on the sides were left a huge for protruding lump that make me look like I have a flat top haircut. I Called and complained and she did offer to have me come in but I explained to her that I live three hours away and she had no one to recommend to help me. I started calling around town to find someone that was willing to because at the time most salons were doing extensions. I ended up at a beauty school where I begged them for help. Lucky for me one of the instructors had some experience. If I had known what a frontal was I would've Demanded that they add one to round out the weave and cover the thinning and pulled hair in the middle of my head. Waste of $500. read more

I called this salon after finding some positive reviews for it online. I had some basic questions about having hair extensions installed, such as 1) price; and 2) who supplies the hair (the salon or me). The person who answered the phone was extremely condescending and rude. She told me the price range is from $125 to $275 for a sew-in and the price depends upon the style. I asked for an example of a $275 style and she repeated the price range which did nothing to extend her answer. When I asked her what brands of hair they used she told me "Indian, Brazilian, Malaysian, and some packages". When I asked again for the BRAND (not the type) she repeated the same answer. Thinking that she misunderstood my question, I said "Indian is not a brand" -- and she hung up on me. I think business at this salon must be quite good that she is comfortable with not working with new customers; however, with the poor customer service that I received, I cannot imagine how the business could be successful. ETA: Since posting this review I have received several text messages from the business. 'So you know how to use a computer to review a business but can bring yourself to business. LOL lord help your sad soul.' 'And you are so right I will never service a client like you who don't appreciate people time.' To put these in context, I asked for some preliminary information over the phone so I could determine if I would want to go in for a consultation, e.g., if they charge $500 for a sew-in, there would be no point in going, or if they only use 'plastic-ish' hair, again, no point in going. I had explained that I was a novice seeking information before committing to going to the salon. I was interrupted, talked over and eventually hung up upon, and then I receive supplementary, superfluous texts from the business. I wanted a professional stylist, not a drama coach. Worst customer service experience ever. I left without my hair braided due to the fact that I was quoted at once price but then up-charged when I got there. Aside from that, the person that was scheduled to do my hair left and no one else in the establishment seemed interested in doing my hair. At that point I expressed my concerns about this additional charge that was never mentioned to me on the phone and suggested that I would go elsewhere. Do not waste your time. The worst service that I have ever received in my life. As soon as I walked in the door some woman was standing there in a jacket with her purse Like she was ready to go. She asked me " what you want?" Immediately I felt uncomfortable and unwanted. My price kept going up and they kept discussing what they would charge me by looking at me. What bothered me the most was how they treated me because my hair was natural and full. I literally started crying and was willing to pay for the opened packages of hair because I was over it! The owner did not offer me anything, she did not call, she did nothing! Kids were sitting on the sofa watching Tv. Unprofessional. I waited a whole hour just to get the run around because my hair was longer then they wanted to deal with. This is a situation that I will never forget about. The way they looked at each other and my hair and then changed the price. I just never thought I'd be treated like that by people who look just like me and have hair just like mine. Disgusting. Before today I had been here one other time. The first time was pretty decent. I went in around noon and came out 4 and a half hours later. They offered me a meal since it was over four hours. But did not ever order it because I was almost done with the single braids I gotten and they told me I had to eat it there and that it was too late to order.. Okay whatever! So, today I had an appt at 10 am when they opened. I showed up early, 930 to be exact. Sometimes braid shops open up early before the actual time. Any who, it got to be 1002a.. I called kemi and she apologized and stated she was in traffic.. No problem. At first, then it got to be 1022.. I called again. And she kinda sounded irritated... Moral of my post is that they are greedy africans whom wouldn't give a discount if they lives depended on it. They showed up late and blamed traffic. They're just ridiculous. Don't waste ya money on this place because there's other shops in mpls. That will do single braids for cheaper and their on time. Africans.. I guess everybody has to be on their time.. And then the lady joyce even asked for an extra $3 because the "hair they provided". They had to take a few pieces out an extra pack. And had the nerve to ask me for an additional three dollars..
