This is an exceptional used bookstore with a good variety of fiction and non-fiction books in hardback and paperback. I have been shopping here for years and I am never disappointed in their selection. I don't always find what I am looking for, but I usually more than make up for it by finding books that I wasn't looking for (kind of like what happens at the grocery store). Bookman is super easy to navigate. Each section has a clearly visible sign and most main sections, such as History, are broken into subsections, such as California history or maritime history. I truly appreciate their selection of science books, a category where many other bookstores come up short. They have a couple aisles (at least) devoted to science from astronomy and physics to geology and marine science to natural history and ecology. They have 3-4 shelves devoted to marine life. They have 3-4 shelves devoted to polar science and exploration. They have a case or more devoted to environmental issues. If you like fiction, you can usually find a favorite novel from a classic author (though they don't stock as much of the top authors as I would like). We've found books by Rona Jaffe, Jacqueline Susann, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemmingway, Clive Cussler, and Ian Fleming, among others. They also have a good selection of paperbacks, especially science fiction paperbacks, and they just started devoting an end cap section to pulp paperbacks. Outside you might find a treasure in their $1 book collection. I recommend that you get on their mailing list because they have great sales from time to time. Their staff are highly knowledgable and very friendly. It's always a pleasant experience. We are very fortunate to have one of Southern California's few remaining top-class used bookstores in Orange County. Buy a book and support them! read more

I always went here when I had to trade in books for store credit or buy books for school when I was in high school. Always found what I was looking for at a lower price than B&N or Borders. They used to give cash for books, but eventually changed policy to store credit that can be used for up to half your total. Kind of complicated, but I think they had to to help business. I never minded since I always knew I'd be coming back for more books. Their romance section is gigantic and their juvenile is fun. They even have great carts out front that are clearance. Staff is friendly and always seem knowledgeable about their HUGE inventory. I haven't checked out their cookbook section, but I will for sure next time I am in. read more

My second home library... I love it there. I've been coming to buy used books for the last five years when I first discovered the store. They've remodeled recently and their shelves seem to be growing with books! You will not find very many newly published books (i.e. don't even bother going to the keep-up-with-technology sections), but you'll definitely find classics and sometimes even first-edition books from long, long ago... at low prices-- some of which are steals. I bought a paperback for $5.95 which is cheaper than the used copies on Amazon. I looked up the same book on Amazon and the lowest used price was $7.59 (shipping included). This used bookstore carries such a wide variety of subjects and their signs make it easy to navigate the store and find your subject. If you can't find what you want, the employees are always happy to help out. I guarantee you, you'll spend at least an hour browsing the shelves of your favorite subject because they carry books that you won't find at Barnes and Noble. This is my favorite bookstore. It has the feel of one of those places you wander into and find the walls just lined with books - books EVERYWHERE! But it has the advantage of being organized. If you are looking for a specific book, it's trs easy to find, but you're also good if you just wand to browse the horror fiction. Or crafts. Or whatever. They have a great selection of used books, but they also have some new stuff, too. So if you want to support a local establishment, you can buy your favorite new release and pick up the author's classics on the cheap. Plus, it's next to Pepperland music so if you spot a biography of your fav musician, you can pop in next door and buy their LP. I've been going to Bookman since I've lived in this neighborhood (almost 15 years now). I loved going when I was younger and I realized yesterday that I STILL love coming here. It definitely has an oldschool vibe inside, but the selection is vast and seemingly infinite. The staff has always been incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Special shout out to Paul who helped me immensely yesterday. I came in with a list of obscure books that I had no idea about (no genre/authors on some of them). Despite the store being busy, he was kind enough to help me hunt down the books in between helping other guests. He was extremely helpful and selfless in showing me where to find the books. There was also a younger guy (didn't get your name, sorry) in glasses who was equally informative and helpful when Paul was too swamped with customers. Mark was also very patient and helpful in assisting me using the computer database. You guys are awesome and I appreciate your time and dedication in helping me find books. I walked out with 3 books ranging from 120-500 pages, and none of them were over 6$. You really cannot go wrong with the fair pricing here. Coming in here makes me want to keep coming back and more importantly makes me want to read more. If you are fan of books, this place is a must (assuming you haven't heard of it already). I love me some Bookman. Wasn't that the name of the repairman on Good Times? Bookman is what commerce used to be. Small, privately owned places where the people who work there are as interested in your field as you are. But the small bookstores are going the way of the dodo. Now it's either big box stores or online retail. For that reason alone, I will always buy my books at Bookman. I think the small hobby stores are the only holdouts. My kids love going to the hobby store an love the people who work there. That's how I feel about Bookman. They've got excellent staff, a good selection of books. Pretty up to date stuff. Aisles and aisles of used books, it's so exciting!! Prices are reasonable especially knowing that the value of a book will never go down! They have all sorts of genres that are organized neatly and clearly labeled. Makes searching for specific books easy! I love the Bookman! I've been coming here for 10 years! It's my favorite book store in the entire world! I have so much store credit saved up. I always check here for books I want before searching anywhere else. I read a lot! The guys here are super friendly and always helpful. They allow 1 box/bag of trade-ins per visit. I have a medium sized shoe box that I have dedicated to my used books. When it's full I bring it in. My mom carries a copy paper box because she reads more than I do. Come in, set your box on the counter and let the guys know you're trading them in, then go browse for about 15 minutes, when you come back to the counter they'll be ready to check you out and get you on your way. When you have store credit and are there to pick up more books they will allow you to use half credit and half out of pocket to purchase your books. Great deal! Most paper back books are half price or less depending on the condition, new paperbacks or hardcovers are a little more. But I guarantee you'll still get a better deal than any other book store. If they don't have what you're looking for they will order it new for you. If you call ahead they can put books on hold for you so they don't sell out before you get there. Three reasons why I love this place-- the smell, prices, and service. Right when you walk in you are greeted with that old book smell, it's wonderful. The books are cheap and reasonably priced. I was here today and got an old copy of "A Passage to India" for $4. When it comes to finding whatever I'm looking for I'm never let down. Great selection. It's a great place for English/Literature students who do a lot of reading and buying of books. The employees are all very kind and helpful. I've been coming here for 10 years now, yet never wrote a review! Great selection of books, and I had a credit slip here for trade-ins for years. The last few years, it's been 1/2 credit and 1/2 cash to buy things ... and the price of books not as cheap as before. Which brings me to the "friends of the library" bookstore. If the library has what I want, it's usually 25 cents to $2 for the books. Which is a lot more afordable than here. Then again, the bookstore has much more selection. It's a tossup. And depending when you go, you might score and you might not. read more

The staff at Bookman is friendly and helpful, the selection is great, and the store is well-organized and neat. They buy books back (great for those of us who can't help ourselves and must take everything home.) There are usually fantastic finds for kids at the bargain (94¢!!!) book carts outside the store, if you have a moment to dig through. My only wish is that store credit could be applied toward 100% of my purchases; Bookman's policy changed a while back and now books can be had for 50% credit, 50% cash. But really anything to keep these folks in business is fine by me in the end - I don't know of anything else like Bookman in the OC. My dad used to take me here when I was young and would buy me a book or two, now I come here all the time digging up all types of gems. You might not find exactly what your looking for if your being super specific (maybe you will, I have) but if you dig you will leave with treasure. Finally decided to go here and trade in 3 large bags of books. The owner only took about one of the bags and gave me $30 to trade in. The store is super organized for a used bookstore. It was easy enough to find authors I like and books on my "To Read List" BUT I will say the prices are higher than I expected ($5-$10). I wont be here unless I have some books for trade. read more

The foreign language section has a lot of Spanish, German, French, and Portuguese books and a few books to help you learn Latin. The Bookman is easily my favorite bookstore in all of Orange County. The staff is always kind and happy to help and the selection of books is always great. Whenever I go, I find a new treasure and usually walk out with about 2-4 books. Everything is inexpensive, they have books available for mere pennies on the outside shelves (& in excellent condition!) and even more bargains inside. For example, I found a an out of print art book that retails for $60 on Amazon for $12.50! The inventory is massive too, you can find books on any subject, ranging from out of print Babysitter's Club books to new celebrity memoirs to collections of art from the Northern Renaissance. The Bookman is an amazing place to visit and you can get lost in there for hours. read more
