Literally my favorite place in PHX, I try to frequent all the bookmans when I'm in town. Love love love this and can't recommend it enough!

I'm a huge fan of used bookstores and I miss spending time in them. Like most of the universe, I use a tablet to read a majority of my books, but there's just something about walking into an actual store, perusing shelves and shelves of titles and taking a crap shoot on what you might get that an e-reader can't provide. Bookman definitely fills that vintage void that the internet has created. From the outside, the place looks small amongst the other stores in the strip mall, but upon entering, you're greeted by massive amounts of books just waiting for you to flip through. The prices are super reasonable and they have a huge variety on almost any topic you can think of. I love finding older books with notes scribbled in the front pages from previous generations commemorating the reasoning behind the gift. One particular book we found was from December 25, 1901 that was a Christmas gift from one friend to another. I'm not even really sure what the book is about, but holding something old and knowing that it was given with love is an awesome find, and it was only $7.99. The piece has character and that is something that an electronic version will never be able to hold. The staff is beyond friendly and knowledgeable on their products and I am forever a fan. Ahhhhh the bookman. Another ones junk is another ones treasure. I can spend hours in here, well maybe not hours, but a long time scopping out the isles full of books. Sadly in a digital world, most of my reading is done on my Kindle or tablet. But I prefer holding a book in my hand. The smell of the pages, the crinkling of the pages and the hidden descriptions in books are one of a kind. The owner even once let me bring my class here on a field trip where they each brought a couple of dollars and bought their own books. Pricing is okay. Its just a % of the publishing price. Avid book readers unite! Throw back your tablets and reject Kindle. You can touch, feel, and fondle real live used books here at Bookman. I pretty much never read books online. I like to reach out and touch someone with my book. I want to touch, caress, and fondle as well as maybe underline my book, don't you? Thank God for the many aisles of real live in the flesh (soft AND hard! lol) books. Their hypnosis favored section cost too much. These are not classics. But in my other areas of interest, I got some great deals. read more

There are very few Really Good bookstores left in the LA, OC area. This is definitely one of the best remaining book shops. They have a great cross section of subjects and a good variety within each. They have a lot of books! Plus, they have an amazing amount of old and vintage editions. In terms of location, Bookman's is housed in a strip mall on a main street. So, there is ample parking and it is easy to get to. If you are driving there from other areas you can easily get ti them off of the 22 or the 5 freeways. Inside you will find long rows of books that have signs to guide you to the various subjects. The staff is nice and helpful. Overall this a great place to go book hunting. Recommended! read more

Wowowow. A used bookstore that actually has Vonnegut! And many many many... Vonnegut... books! Seriously amazing selection, HUGE inventory, and even better prices. The staff here were laid back and knowledgeable and made me feel at home x) I can spend hours here. I bought 4 Vonnegut classics, all in excellent condition for less than 20 bucks. Rounded up to 4.5 stars. My only knock is that they don't have as many hard covers, but that isn't completely in their control. I've been to many used book stores and this one has the widest selection! I love the people working here-always friendly and willing to help. I've never brought books to trade in because I hoard them, but the prices are fair and I LOVE that you can go online and make a "want list" and if something comes in that you're looking for, you can purchase it online or request to hold it. I have found several various printings of Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books this way. (I collect them) Including a first US edition! Love this place, please support them so they never go away. read more

If you want some vintage books and older used books this place is for you. The store is not huge but it has several sections including a few custom made sections of books. Everything from books to textbooks on the bible, the body, pyscology, gender, history, math and more. They also have older romance novels as well. Some of the books like like they may have been sold by your old elementary school. The guys were freindly and the atmosphere was easy going. read more

Visited here with my boyfriend on our search for new books to devour. Loved the huge selection of books and sections as well as their filing system as it's separated by subject and author (either first or last name, can't remember). Some of the books are dated, but I like how it adds to the variety of available books and since many of these books are donated, there are books here that you might not find in other book stores. Also, THE PRICE! I could go on all day about the prices! Many of the books are around $5!!! I think this is a great deal seeing as books typically go for about $10+ depending on where you buy them from. It seems that the older/more damaged the book is, then the lower the price is. I saw some books going for about $3 (what a treat!) If you actually want to take your time in here, there is no air conditioner so it gets pretty hot during Summer (I entered as dry as the dessert and left with pit stains). Something you can do to counter this is look on their website beforehand at some of the books that they have so that you have an idea of where to look and what to grab when you're in the store. Huge selection! Isle after isle of books on every subject imaginable. But the best part is inventory is automated, so you can look in advance at orange.ebookman.com to see if the item you are looking for is in stock. If you want to get lost in the isles and flip through pages...great...but not necessary. You can browse online before you go, and simply pick up exactly what you want. Oh...If you can't find it on the shelves, just ask. Staff is so helpful they will help you find it or even find it for you and hold it until you arrive. They have been on Tustin Avenue forever, but they are in the process of moving around the corner to Katella. Love this store! read more

Oh Bookman, :D I'll always enjoy the feel of a book, turning of the page, and smell of paper! I've been coming here for years now, and it's my favorite used bookstore. It's really hard to come by a good used bookstore and this place is fairly big with many selections! Plus, the price isn't so bad either!! :) FYI!! THEY ARE MOVING TO A NEW LOCATION!! 320 E. Katella Avenue, Orange I believe they are moving by the end of July or beginning of August! A nice independent bookstore, located next to a used record/music memorabilia/guitar store and a thrift shop. There are tons of books loaded on handcrafted wooded shelves. If you can't find something - ask....the staff will help. I picked up an old punk rock book, "Make the Music Go Bang!". Had to grab it since I probably wouldn't be able to purchase it somewhere else. Nice comfy place, recommend to you! It's not cheap, about 50% off cover price, but you'll find what you want. read more

I love all things books. The touch, the feel, the paper, the smell. I don't think I will ever buy a kindle. So a place like Bookman's is my mecca. It is a relatively small space packed with rows and rows of books stacked floor to cieling. Can you hear the choir of angels? They have an amazing selection. The staff is friendly. The place itself is a bit messy but that's only because they have so many books! I have been known to lose hours in this place. I only wish they had some couches to sit and read. I liked the suggestion of a small cafe. Then I will have died and gone to heaven :) read more

This seemingly small used bookstore is surprising in size and variety. This place is well organized and offers step stools so you can actually reach the top shelves. Books range from $1 to up to $15. Don't come here looking for used Harry Potter boons though because apparently they never can keep them longer than a day :(. Their philosophy section has some neat books. read more

My family and I have been shopping at Bookman for years. They have an enormous selection of used books with a lot of variety regarding genre and subject matter. There is a great trade in credit system and they honor their credit notes for years between visits. Very surprising and it definitely keeps me loyal! Sometimes it is hit or miss with the level of customer service depending on the type of book shopper YOU are. The people who tend to work in independent book shops are "book people" who don't necessarily thrive on social interaction. I know I horribly generalized them but after going to quite a few of these types of stores over the years I have discovered a trend with the people who work behind the counter. I enjoy it because I don't like to be constantly disturbed as I am browsing. They are always willing to help though when I need it! read more

There aren't many bookstores like Bookman around. The only other bookstore comparable was in Gold Beach and Ashland Oregon. I'll be back. I bought a how to draw book. The Caine Mutiny. I love Bookman! My sister and I have been shopping here for years, and it's our favorite local bookstore. All of the workers we've interacted with have been kind, and they'll say hello and then let you peruse on your own. We really appreciate that as we like to spend our time in book stores just quietly exploring and hanging out without being bothered. They have lots of books, organized throughout the store by subject/genre and they have new (used) books coming in each week, so we always find something new when we come back. They have chairs to read in and hang the work of local artists in the shop which as an artist I think is pretty cool. They'll also buy your used books for store credit, but call ahead and make sure they'll be able to accommodate you for that as only certain workers are available to do so. read more

Used bookstores are rare finds in Orange County. I was thrilled to find this store and check it out. The store has several aisles of books. All the books are clearly organized by genre, which makes searching much easier. It is still a bit overwhelming to look through all the shelves within a section, especially since most of the lighting is pretty dim. They have some very specific genres such as foreign travel, various art style books, and history from all eras. They also have a large fiction section. Most of the books I saw were in decent condition. Some books have recognizable authors or titles, but many seemed to be more obscure titles. The sports and finance section were small compared to some of the other sections. The book prices are labeled on the inner cover or with a sticker on the cover. Several of the books I picked up didn't have a price tag. The books I paid were reasonably priced and I imagine most are. read more

I love this store. Having recently relocated here, and being a lifelong lover of books, this place is a treasure of a find for me! They have quite a selection to choose from, great prices, the staff is very helpful... You can also search online and/or make a wishlist of things they don't have but which you want to be notified upon their arrival. Remember that scene from Harry Potter 1 where Harry enters Ollivander's wand shop and the shop is magically, wonderfully, stacked to the ceilings with wands? Well, Bookman is the book version of that! I came here to look for the book "The Martian" and was relying on the website's directory. Upon entering the shop, there were rows upon rows, books stacked against books, all arranged into this cute little shop. The employees are so knowledgeable - I couldn't find my book, so came up to ask for help, and just asked for a book by Andy Weir. The employee immediately knew what book I was referring to, and directed me to it no problem. I was even given an extra discount because of the book's water damage!!! Needless to say, I wandered around some more, and tried to look for another book I was eyeing for some time. It wasn't on the shelf, but the employee was super helpful and found a copy from the back! This place is pretty epic and absolutely my new favorite book store. They aren't as cheap as the dollar book stores, but they still give a fair price plus I prefer used books 10 fold over new, they have history, character, and AROMA! The employees were extremely nice and helpful and the lady (barbara?) in the back was insanely knowledgeable on literary fiction and just the damn location of everything. This store is HUGE! I mean seriously, impressively massive. My gf and I were taken back when we walked in. I'll come back just to be in that atmosphere even if I'm not looking for anything specific. I do feel bad, I purchased a book for $20 (brand new) but then saw it on amazon/barnes online for $11 and in store for $16. They did honor my refund since I purchased the book hours before. I felt bad after :-( they deserve the support and moving forward I'll do what I can to keep then in business even if it means paying a bit more for a human service and an art that is dying out. The Bookman is fantastic! They've been in Orange since I was a young lad, and I've been a customer of theirs almost that long. They have a wonderful selection of quality used books that are sometimes hard to get your hands on. I tend to be a hardcover snob, and they don't disappoint. I've purchased an entire hardcover set of Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia. Currently working on the entire Ian Fleming James Bond series, and they always have a few. That just moved around the corner to their new location on Katella Ave, so be patient as they get the new location. Even in the midst of unpacking, the guys were polite, pleasant, and friendly, welcoming me like a member of the family when I walked through the door. Check them out! You won't be sorry! read more

Three books we purchased somehow required 19 days to complete their planned 900 mile journey, as increased to 1,500 miles after they overshot their destination by 300 miles. Initially, we had few and sketchy details as to where the books were, then no clues. We made inquiry of the seller, which assured us it had equally little information. At 12 days out, the seller refunded our purchase price. We decided not to deposit or cash the refund check, hoping the books would arrive eventually, however belatedly. When they finally arrived a week later, two weeks later than expected, we returned the seller's check. Quite the experience. read more
