I recently bought my first book from here about two weeks ago for a school project. I thought I could just read it and then return it once I was done, so that's what i'd plan to do. Today, (8-17-25), I went in to return my book and was completely ridiculed by the employee who was helping me. I didn't catch her name, but she had long black hair and wore glasses. I told her repeatedly that I'd never bought/returned a book from here before and that I wasn't sure how it worked or what I was doing. She asked if anything was wrong with it and I said no, and explained how I bought it for school and did in fact read it. She told that they couldn't take it because I used it and I can admit some of the pages were worn, so I accepted the rejection and said that I was unaware because AGAIN i'd never done this before and that the receipt doesn't specify that you can't return a used book. She could've just left it at that but no, she goes on to compare it to buying clothes, how clothing stores wouldn't take back worn clothes, which isn't true. She also told me that it's common sense, which was completely unnecessary and did nothing but make me feel belittled, especially since I told her from the beginning that I've never went through the return process at a Books-A-Million before. The whole time I was understanding and I told her it was okay and I understood why they wouldn't take the book back. I just don't understand why she thought it was necessary to basically tell me I lack common sense when she could've just told me straight up no and to have a nice day. Workers like her make people not want to return to the store. Do better. read more

I was in the area with some time to kill and since I love bookstores, Books A Million was an obvious choice. A readers delight - wonderful selection in all traditional genres, huge selection of magazines, and plenty of toys, puzzles and similar amusements for the non-readers out there Prices are standard retail, with a few discounts on some new book, some remainders. I love books a million, but then I love books and magazines. This store has just about everything! Great selection of books, magazines, gifts, candy and toys. I love the children's area. They have a nice little cafe, but I've never gotten anything there. They even have music and vinyl! Check out goes fast and when they ask if you want to try some magazines, I suggest saying no thank you. I don't know why they do that, but I don't want people calling me all the time! I enjoy going and just wandering around. I usually end up buying one of the Somerset magazines. read more

BAM is Borders bought out and refitted. The layout is more open, but it has many of the same general sections in about the same position that they were before: music, movies, children's, coffee (J. Muggs), bargain, and checkout. There's a loyalty program, also similar to Borders, that gives you discounts (even at the coffee shop), free wireless, and e-mail coupons. Today, it was offered at the discounted annual price of $16, and I included one in my purchase. My receipt shows I paid $20 -- oops, BAM loses a star for not delivering that promise. Still, it's good to have a retail bookstore close to home again. read more

I rarely shop here, since its about a 45 minute drive from my house. I usually shop at barnes and noble. Employees were a little rude. I walked by the same male employee about 5 to 10 times and no word from him until i was heading to the check out lane. The main issue i had was with the cashier checking me out. I feel like she took advantage of me. They were offering 3 magazines for 2 months free with automatic renewal. She did not tell me about the automatic renewal until AFTER i picked the 3 magazines. I thought they were free until she started to explain i had to call or go to a website to cancel. Nothing about the automatic part until the very end. She did not give me an option to discontinue the magazines or say no at the beginning. I am not fully sure what i got my self into. The subscription prices are expensive. The book prices are list prices that are the same as barnes and nobles. The selection of books is nice and the fact that they have movies and t shirts made the trip worth it. I probably will not be back for a long time. read more

Went to BAM today (11/4/2018)to look at books, get coffee and relax. Ordered our coffee and sat down in the cafe area but couldn't even think about reading and relaxing. A manager (I believe his name was Jim) was talking to the lady working in the cafe so loud and he was complaining about other employees. This went on for at least 30 minutes, then we had to leave. It was ridiculous. I complained as I was checking out but I guess it's hard to tell your manager to lower his voice and stop complaining. Awful customer service today. Less than 2 months ago I joined their Membership Club with an incentive of a $10 off coupon. Turns out it expired after 30 days. This coupon was the ONLY reason I decided to join because it was the only way that the membership was worth it to me. Then, she asked if I had my members only coupons. Since this was a spur of the moment trip, I did not. Instead of offering an already frustrated customer the coupon's discount (they KNEW I was a member) anyway, they TOLD ME TO GO HOME AND PRINT THE COUPON AND COME BACK. Spontaneous trip where I had over $40 of merchandise and you asked me to leave your store empty-handed. Not coming back. read more

This is the worst book store EVER! Even if there was a store that only sold one book it would be better than this store. Their selection is awful. Their employees, for the most part, are unhelpful. I went in there a few hours after they opened on a day a popular book came out and asked them if they had it. They told me that it was still in back in a box and they wouldn't be opening it till later that evening. They took my name and number and said they would call asap. That was three weeks ago. Girlfriend got a book here and the lady had her sign something to get a 2 month subscription to 3 magazines without telling her it would charge her after 2 months. We made it obvious that we didn't want it but she did it anyway. Just annoying and unfriendly staff read more

I'm glad Books a Million bought out this Borders store; it is good to have a nice book store--even a chain--in town. Decent selection of discounted books and there is a discount card you can purchase. The chairs could be a lot more comfortable in the coffee section and the staff is slow at times. Still, this is the only game in town. read more

This place cost me 100$. I had to cancel my credit card and redo all my automated accounts payable thru that card. Safe yourself time and use google or amazon for books. Businesses like this should not be. Go elsewhere to spend your money. Life is too short. read more

I find this to be a very good place to get or order books and it's so wonderful to still have a real, physical bookstore that specializes and caters to the literate. I felt I needed to write a review after reading several negative ones here. Do I think this is the best book store? No, but I think it's far from the worst. Do I miss Borders and its better selection? You bet! And I did on one occasion encounter a rude staff member. Where can you go these days and not encounter the occasional rude employee? And I do admit I have several times felt frustrated using BAM's website. There have been times on their website, I've located a book and been met with the statement that the store had a limited number available and confirm the number available by calling. I don't. My mistake. Instead I drive to the store, a BAM employee checks and they have none available...even a best seller. But I'm a book junkie and a trip to a bookstore is never a total loss. Something that I believe should be explained is that the employees at checkout registers (even at the snack bar area) are required to try to sell the store's membership discount card and attempt to entice you with the magazine subscription in order to keep their jobs! At one point (not positive it's still true) each BAM employee had a quota of membership cards to sell within a specified time period in order to remain employed and/or receive a tiny pay increase. The employees I have encountered have always explained the discount membership card and magazine subscription to me. And remember, I'm a book junkie. I've visited BAM many times, but we all know there are employees everywhere who don't do their jobs as well as others. My experiences at the Edwardsville location have been positive. read more
