    The aftermath
    Mike R.

Five stars in a rural Texas town? Yep, and here's why: Boondocks has a large menu of seafood and beef. Seafood in the literal Heart of Texas? Absolutely. Farmed and trucked in? Yes. Excellently prepared with great flavor and careful technique? Absolutely. We started with the fried mushrooms - something we don't eat often but a treat done right. The breading was light and crispy, the mushrooms hot but not nuclear, and the flavor with just enough salt and spice. The accompanying ranch dressing was buttermilk ranch and had that deep buttermilk twang. I had the blackened Mahi-Mahi, my partner had the blackened Salmon. They were both perfectly fork tender, juicy and seasoned without being "nothing but spice." The accompanying (Cajun) brown rice paired well. It was a Saturday afternoon and the place was PACKED for lunch - full of locals. This speaks highly to the consistent service, excellent food and variety for everyone. Absolutely worth stopping for a meal when traveling, and worth eating at whether you want home style, fancy or both. The pic? The aftermath. :)

    Catfish Dinner

This place was really good, with great service and reasonable prices! I had their catfish dinner. It came with huge pieces of fish and great sides. I usually hit Brady about lunch time, and this is my new go-to place. If you're ever in Brady, try them out.

Well what a surprise. Best catfish I ever had. Free beans to boot! Watch out for the gator.

    Bacon Cheeseburger

Normally when cruising back and for from Midland to the Hill Country, I stop at a little place in Llano (bet you can guess which one) but I wanted something different today and rolled the dice on this place. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, which came with fries. The fries are fine, but this burger is a real show-stopper. It's an 8 ounce patty, fresh veggies, cheese, and bacon so think that Sir Mix-A-Lot could write a song about it. They pile that on a scratch made bun toasted till the interior is crunchy while the exterior is fluffy and pillowy. Honestly, this is in my burger top ten. Greatness.

Oh my gosh I was so surprised, I have tasted a lot of different chicken fried steaks and Barrel House was over the top. Friendly waitstaff kept our drinks filled and checked on us. Loved their sweet tea! I was hoping to come back in 2025 but I landed in hospital and we were broke by the time I finally got out. Highly recommend The Barrel house!!

While the atmosphere is wide open providing spacious seating, the comfort of seeing so many happy families dining was joyous. Since this is my first trip to the new restaurant from the same folks that brought you the Iguana Grill off of 620, the 4* rating reflects what I could reasonably provide. Let's get to food. The pull pork nachos, soft pretzel (huge worth splitting), and chips:queso were excellent starters. I do want to try their fried pimento cheese balls the next time. All great. For salad, I tried their Da Bomb with Turkey which was a bit of disappointment since it had scant cuts of Turkey deli meat. Feedback to this salad is to never ever use deli meat in a salad. Try streak, shrimp, or chicken. I also recommend higher quality fresh cheese like mozzarella or goat but the bomb had inexpensive grated Colby. I would also recommend glazed walnuts and berries but it didn't have either. For entree, I really want to come back and try their gumbo and e'toufee but decided on the sirloin which was cooked to medium. They also have several steak sauces included chimmichurri and hollondaise. Drinks were great. Recommendation. The service can slow down on the weekend when they get busy.

You should know, this is an intimate space with only eight 4 tops and a dozen seats at the bar and that's all. We got here on a Wednesday happy hour, and the place was almost full, so making a reservation might be in order. The happy hour food and drink specials is most likely the reason why the place was almost packed. The dinner menu takes the prices to the next level. We started off with a couple of $10 martinis and decided on four happy hour menu items. My shrimp Po boy came on a crunchy French baguette and the Seabass was cooked to perfection. No wonder this place was packed. At six on the dot a pianist took the stage and livened up the atmosphere. The happy hour crowd trickled out, and the dinner folks strolled in. We added their bruschetta as the final piece and it was really very fresh. Some notes of interest that others may have missed: 3% credit card fee, no wifi and there's mouthwash for you in the bathroom. Definitely a place to revisit. 10 informative photos to get you through the door.

We had a really frustrating experience at Martinis in Fredericksburg…read more We called ahead because it was cold, rainy, and we were traveling with babies. On the phone, they told us they had availability and could accommodate us, no mention of any restrictions or special policies. When we arrived, everything changed. Suddenly, they said they couldn't seat us because our group was "too big." Then we were told that any group of 7+ is automatically forced into a $145 per person prix fixe chef's menu. We had six adults and three babies (babies who obviously are not eating a multi-course tasting menu, they are drinking MILK) and they still tried to apply this policy to us. Not only was this never mentioned on the phone, but it felt completely unreasonable given the makeup of our group. Meanwhile, we were staring at an empty table that was big enough to fit our group. We were fully prepared to spend a significant amount of money there, and instead were turned away over a policy that should have been clearly communicated upfront. If you have strict rules like this, communicate them ahead of time, especially when people call to confirm. Don't tell guests you can accommodate them and then change everything when they arrive. The lack of transparency and flexibility made for a really disappointing experience. Would not recommend, especially for groups or anyone traveling with kids. Don't anticipate this place will be in business long.
