We were there on a Friday night - arrived early around 5:30. There were already quite a few people there and within an hour there were several couples waiting at the door. Food was excellent. I got the shrimp and fish platter. I usually use a lot of tartar sauce but the shrimp was seasoned so well it would have been wrong to cover the taste with tartar. Catfish great. My wife got the Salmon and loved it too. Service was good though the place was full. No long wait, attentive service. All good. No complaints or problems. This place is one of our new favorites and we will definitely be back. Ambience - plain. Nothing fancy but nice environment for a casual or semi-special evening. The best catfish, period. The blackened redfish served on dirty rice thats usually a special is my favorite. Cajun alfredo and lobster mac kicks ass. My wife says the fish and chips are the best shes had. We have been going there for four years and even the longer wait on Friday nights were totally worth it at the old location. While in Kerrville looking for a quick lunch, a friend suggested this seafood place. Now, Kerrville is not known for fine dining but this place ups the towns reputation a little bit. The food is good - not great. My wife ordered the burger and she loved it. She eats a burger at a seafood restaurant because she does not like seafood. I do! Anyway, I ordered the Fish and chips and a cup of seafood gumbo. It came in a bowl and yes, it was tasty. Not New Orleans good but hey, it's still Kerrville! The fried codfish but dripping in oil and that's the biggest complaint about the dish. It was difficult to hold it up because it was too oily. They may have to alter the cooking process with the oil already hot before putting the breaded fish to fry. Sometimes, frozen breaded fish come out oily. The service was excellent! Our server was friendly with a great smile and she was fast and efficient. All good things there. We have been going to Wahoos for several years now. Their new location is wonderful with more space and the ambiance is great. The food is always consistently fresh and delicious. I found this gem last year at their old location 905 Sidney Baker St location and it was AMAZING. Fast forward to this year (2026) and even though Google still showed the 905 location "open" it has been closed for quite a while as their new river front location on 1701 Junction Hwy is now open. My Uber had to drive me to the new location since they can not list the previous location as "closed" apparently. No biggy. Arrived to the new location (much more up scale/swanky) but grabbed a bar stool and was ready for a repeat of last year as it was THAT GOOD. Server was amazing, drinks and appetizers were amazing, but the main course "special" of the Cajan Ribeye with Blackened Shrimp killed this evening. All the seafood and sides were GREAT but the main feature ribeye was HORRIBLE, very tough, LOTS of sinew and hard fat, I literally could not eat the steak. When my server asked me if I wanted the left overs to go, I pointed to the pile of sinew and half of the steak left and let her know that this piece was sub-par, literally not even a choice cut of meat, she apologized and was going to let the Chef know. Well even after all of that I received a check for the full amount of everything. OK that is fine. I paid my full bill and gave my server 20+% tip as she earned it. Nothing she did would warranty a no tip situation, however NOTHING the management did would warrant a stellar review. I did not want anything comped, but just a simple apology would have been nice?? I can not hold my server responsible for the restaurants lack of proper management, but WOW with over 150.00 bill for food/drinks could you not talk to me about a really crappy steak???? We used to eat here several times a month and before they moved 9 out of 10 times rated five stars. We are sad to say that 1 out of 4 times lately has been worth the price and comparable to what Wahoo's used to be. The past 2 times, the stewed okra had no stew, mostly bell peppers and was undercooked, the beans were lukewarm and the fried shrimp was bland and tasteless. Brought my daughter in for dinner at the bar top. It was a Sunday so there was NFL playing on the TVs. I hear they have the NFL Sunday Ticket. The food was amazing. When we finally received our food, it was lukewarm at best. And cold fish is not good. Yelp, at its most basic level is really "Word of Mouth" on a much grander scale. And comprised of reviewers who are giving you their opinion. At that capacity who's opinion do you value? Does an Elite badge necessarily quantify that it is more valid than the Yelper without one? I do read many reviews before I offer my patronage to a business. But I only trust a few. What had started a few years ago, a friendship with Don c/s ( whose counsel on Yelp I do value) at a set of Yelp lunch gatherings has grown into meeting more often over great meals. The last one was at an Indian buffet. The next one was suggested at Wahoo's Seafood Co. in idyllic Kerrville, Texas. If Don says a place is great it can be empirically proven true. So I made the hour trek with my co-pilot to ensure parking with finite spaces was available and away we were. Don was spot on about the parking situation. I saw this immediately after we left the restaurant. The place itself is really, really small and intimate. There are a few tables, booths. We were seated by a friendly server who gave excellent service. Full disclaimer: I do not eat seafood. And Wahoo's does Cajun style cuisine with a heavy emphasis on the Gulf Coast. They do offer a burger, which I ordered. Whilst in the presence of great company I found myself looking around the room primarily at its aesthetics. The decor is very simple with a local flair. One thing I liked were the windows with a Louisiana influenced theme: Expressionist decals with a Jazz motif. In keeping with "the local" this place buys fresh fish, crab, shrimp etc. from fishermen everyday. This was indicative in all the plates I saw. My counterpart ordered the Taste of Louisiana overflowing with potatoes, sausage and shrimp. Don and Peg's plates were filled to the brim with fish and red beans. And me, I'm the boring person. I had their burger which was really good with an accompanying local IPA. Judging by my friends empty plates and big smiles I know the food was good. Certainly the fine company was equal to that. In addition Wahoo's has a very laid back, welcoming vibe. It's very casual, no jacket is required. At the same time the excellent service, the welcoming ambience especially the plating was above casual dining. It's fine dining. We got there right when it opened. By the time we left the place was in full swing with parking spaces all filled up. Wahoo's Seafood Co. is a perfect place to visit or catch up with friends or loved ones if you're into Cajun, Louisiana themed cuisine. The service and food are excellent. Great food & wait staff. I tried to go for a more healthy option than the rice pilaf but it was not available (wanted veggies, instead of rice, due to dietary needs). Food is flavorful with Cajun flavorings. Fish is excellent but they cannot accommodate my dietary needs. I cannot eat white rice, according to my doctor. I would give them an A- but, unfortunately, for this reason, I may no longer be able to enjoy their salmon. It was greatly enjoyed in the past. Always ask what the specials are. They usually have a fish with Pontchartrain sauce on it. They also have green tomatoes with Pontchartrain sauce on them, which that sauce is probably the best thing on the menu. The fried shrimp is excellent also fresh the Gulf. read more

Astute readers may have noticed that I don't "Yelp" as frequently nor as passionately as I did a few years ago. "Why," you ask? The answer is that I struggle to find new places, little hidden gems, that reignite the embers of my dying Yelper fire. Ever so often, though, I will stumble upon a place so unique, so worthy of praise that I suddenly feel a second wind, a newfound passion to rage against the dying of the light. Wahoo's Seafood is exactly that kind of place. To say that I'm impressed would be an understatement; Wahoo's is a contender for the best seafood restaurant located within at least 100 miles of San Antonio. If you're familiar with my reviews, then you know that is high praise indeed. Before I begin the review, please indulge me as I provide a brief history of the restaurant and how it came to be. Chef/owner Scott Thibodeaux -- a native Houstonian/restaurant industry veteran with possibly the most Cajun-sounding surname ever -- opened Wahoo's Seafood Market in Kerrville about a decade ago. Dissatisfied with the quality of seafood available in and around San Antonio, Scott decided to travel to and from Galveston (at least once a week by car!) in order to procure the freshest fish, oysters, and shrimp available. Now *that* is dedication! The market became so popular that Scott and his wife April decided to expand to a full-service restaurant at a slightly larger location about a mile away. Now that I've provided a frame of reference for why this place is amazing (yes, a superlative!), here is the review. Enjoy! Seafood gumbo (5.0/5.0): A rich, robust roux with a dark brown hue sets the foundation of Scott's gumbo, which I place among the best I've had anywhere. The spice level is perfect (just a little kick), the rice is cooked al dente, and the seafood components are fresh and plentiful. The four huge wild-caught Gulf Coast shrimp are plump and meaty. The oysters are shucked fresh in house, and the crab claws are meaty and full flavored. The crusty French bread -- sourced directly from Gambino's Bakery in New Orleans -- is no afterthought, either. I used the bread to sop up every last drop of scrumptiousness from that bowl. Note: the gumbo is available in three sizes: an eight-ounce cup, a 16-ounce bowl, and a 24-ounce horse trough. Adjust your belt buckle accordingly. Pick-Two Combo (5.0/5.0): The menu gives customers the option to choose two of the following: shrimp, oysters, and/or catfish. I couldn't be bothered to choose, so I asked for all three, a request the kitchen was happy to oblige for a reasonable upcharge. The seafood options are available fried, grilled, or blackened. On this occasion, I chose fried simply because I was in the mood for fried seafood. As I mentioned in my review of the gumbo, the shrimp were plump and delicious. These wild-caught shrimp have a slightly sweet flavor profile absent from the farmed variety to which most consumers are accustomed. The oysters, likewise, were fresh and brimming with flavor. Even the catfish -- an afterthought at many seafood places -- tasted fresh, with a flaky, meaty interior and a crunchy breading. I was equally impressed with my two sides (included in the cost) that day: a creamy potato salad redolent with the spices of Creole mustard, and haricots verts (French green beans) cooked Lyonnaise style with bacon and butter. "The Don" Special (5.0/5.0): I know better than to order a steak at a seafood joint, but Wahoo's is no ordinary seafood joint. "The Don" (not, as far as I know, named after Dr. Don B., whose review of Wahoo's is definitely worth reading) consists of a 16-ounce, Prime-graded, blackened ribeye topped with Pontchartrain sauce (a rich, buttery seafood sauce) and four blackened shrimp. The steak was pan-seared to a perfect medium rare. This cooking technique rendered the fat along the edges, gave the surface a nice crust, and kept the interior juicy. The seafood sauce paired perfectly with the steak; I could taste every component (steak, blackened seasoning, butter, Parmesan cheese, crawfish, and crab) in every bite. Shrimp is a difficult protein, as finding the sweet spot between undercooked and overcooked/rubbery can be tricky, especially when blackened. Unsurprisingly, the four blackened shrimp atop my steak were cooked perfectly. The blackening seasoning was intensely flavorful but not overpowering. Bread Pudding (5.0/5.0): In less capable hands, bread pudding can become a cloyingly sweet pile of mush, but when executed with love, it can be a celebration of simple ingredients. At Wahoo's, Chef Scott uses French bread from Gambino's Bakery (the same bread that accompanies the gumbo), a few raisins, and a bourbon sauce with strong notes of caramelized sugar and a subtle alcoholic bite. I can't think of a better iteration of this dessert. As usual, I have a lot more to say, but I have already approached my character limit for this review. You people should know me by now.
