One of my employees and I attended a Christmas Dinner last night in the event center. This is the second event I have attended at this hotel. The event center has a separate entrance from the main hotel. Our large group was seated for a plated dinner, which started with a Fresh Greens Salad. The entree was Roasted Chicken, Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans. We had Cheesecake for dessert. The staff did great taking care of our large group. The food was very good. Historic Hotel in downtown Berea. Rooms are small, so is the bathroom; both befitting the style of the early 20th century. Property is well run and very clean. You can tell who the students are, they all wear blue button down shirts! The hotel has a white table cloth dining room. Students are involved in the running of the restaurant. Went on a weekend getaway to Berea and stayed at the Boone Hotel Friday-Sunday. Here's what we loved- The staff was incredibly friendly at check in and the restaurant. Even through the restaurant was poppin they were able to serve us drinks and spoon bread in the cute lobby/lounge area. One of the days they had a young man playing piano in the lobby and it was also a great touch. You also can't beat the location - it is nestled on campus with shopping and dining within walking distance. Other things worth noting - the rooms are a little small but probably to be expected with a more historic hotel. Nonetheless, they offer a quaint historic vibe while also being very well maintained and upgraded with all of the features of a commercial hotel (mini fridge, TV, drier, AC, wifi, etc.) there are limited channels on the TV but also added to the small town charm! read more

We decided to stay here while travelling through Kentucky. It's a pretty fancy place on the National Historic Register. Located next to Berea KY College, it's in the heart of Berea which makes traffic a problem at times. The rooms were nice enough but our biggest gripe was the window air conditioner that left a lot to be desired from a noise perspective. And being right in the heart of Berea, the traffic noise was more than expected. They have a nice restaurant and a beautiful lobby. The bathroom was roomy and the bed was comfortable. Free parking in their lot. It cost a few dollars more than other places but it was fun to stay at such an historic hotel for one night. read more

02/04/2025 Checked in at the hotel. One thing I noticed with this hotel is that the parking is to the back of the hotel on approach. The parking spots do seem small and I wonder if there are enough spots, for number of rooms at this hotel. The interior of the lobby is really homely, arm chairs, fire places, etc. I was able to turn the key and enter my room (you had seen that right. One uses a key to enter their rooms at this hotel). What I had noticed though is that there is a MASTER SWITCH one has to turn on before the bathroom light comes on and the main light/fan over the bed. I found this to be an inconvenience because it was never told to me upon check in that I would have to do this. One can find this information on a document on the dresser next to the coffee and under the t.v. What I found interesting was there is a sign on the t.v. that states "You Hungry?" yet I would rather have that same sign display the fact that a master switch needs to be turned on before electricity is on in the room. I feel like people in my generation probably do not know what a master switch is, so I feel like this needs to be displayed somewhere easily seen and explained. When I got into the room, the first thing I did was bee line it to the bathroom. Would it make sense to put it there? I do not know. Would it make sense to put it on the t.v.? I think that would be the best place. Another inconvenience was that there was no waste basket in the actual room part. There is one in the bathroom and so this led to me always having to go to the restroom to throw anything away. Restaurant The restaurant part of the hotel is really nice. I was able to get a table next to the window and one can see all the college students walking by. I had the smoked rainbow trout cakes and the spoon bread is COMPLIMENTARY. I did not know that from other reviews on here. It reminded me of a puffy pancake with corn taste. 2/5/2025 I ended up waking up to take a shower and noticed that the shower had taken a good amount of time to get warm. Is there a way to fix this? Also, I ended up getting breakfast, two biscuits and two turkey sausage patties. I found it interesting that they served the biscuit with apple butter in addition to regular butter. For the $180 we paid I did not get my money's worth. I get how the place has historic relevance, and that's what lured me in over the box hotels on the highway. For an old building it was beautifully kept. But when you spend $180 a night you want a good night's sleep. The bed was miserable. If you're wanting to sleep try your car bc it would probably only be 2 steps behind what I felt this morning after sleeping on that rock of a bed. It's 9 am and I'm as tired as if I never slept last night. So I've got a 7 hour drive ahead of me that I stopped to sleep and be up to finishing the drive. Not worth $180. read more

The burger itself looked pretty average, but the house-baked bun really made it stand out. The connected hotel has a great historic vibe, though we didn't stay overnight. First rule of Spoon bread is do not ever try to get spoonbread during the Spoon-bread Festival in Berea. Save your self-time and trouble just go to Boone Tavern and get it there. The Tavern is beautiful but pricey and has a limited menu. I love the rustic feel of the place. I had a sweet onion soup to start off, it was like french onion soup with gruyere cheese. Jennifer had the Trout cakes, which as a interesting take on the traditional style crab cakes. I was going to have the grilled Ribeye, which is a 12-oz ribeye, (Med Rare of course), cooked in a garlic herb butter glaze with a truffle pomme pave' which is very thin sliced potato dish. I had to look that up because I had no idea what it was. Priced at $48,00 is is some what pricey. But opted for a cheaper option of the Wilderness Burger instead. My wife had the had the Chicken Saltimbocca, which is a chicken wrapped in prosciutto and stuffed with ham and mushrooms along with smashed potatoes on the side. The downside to the dinning is the limited menu. The Flourless Cake is amazing, and so is the Ky Butter-brown Cake. We stay the night in the hotel as well, the rooms vary in size but all have the rustic decor and feel for them. We had breakfast the next morning before leaving, once again limited menu options so we settled for Biscuits and Gravy with 2 eggs on the side. The downside that is always common with biscuits and gravy is the ration of gravy to biscuits. Not enough gravy with the biscuits. If you are thru the area visiting in Berea, check out Boone's Tavern, nestled among many craft shops that you will most certainly find something to catch you eye, but don't forget your wallet $$$$$$$ read more

Actually getting ready to check out but I have to give credit where credit is due! This place is awesome!! I would recommend it to anyone traveling to or through the area. The hotel is beautiful and the staff are amazing. Very very nice and accommodating. I had something delivered to the room and it is customary to tip the person making the delivery. My tip was declined. He said, with a smile, "oh, that's not necessary" Everyone here loves being here and loves what they do and it shows in their hospitality! read more

My roots are from the Berea area. I've loved the Boone Tavern since I was a child and actually do still love the hotel. I gave it a 3 rating because I'm very disappointed to see what they have done to the dining area. It's like they took a page out of Cracker Barrel's playbook. The dining area is totally unrecognizable, which has taken away from the charm of this beautiful, historic building. I hate to say it, but I think some of the staff took on the personality of the new atmosphere, too. The smiles and friendliness were gone, as if the soul was sucked out of the building. I understand the need to refresh from time to time, but to do such a dramatic change feels disrespectful to a place so loved and filled with history. You'll start to see some familiar things around the hotel from the college craft. Here for dinner? The signature Spoon bread is gluten free corn meal- dig in ya'll! Moist and mealy! They sell the mix too as an add water only mix if you want to make it at home too! Want to make it even better? Ask them for some of the amazing honey they carry, or maybe a dab of some hot sauce for an extra kick. We just wanted a light meal, so we ordered the Kentucky Burgoo, which is like a combination of veggie stew and chili, with chili powder and cumin flavors. Garden salad with red Russian dressing may have had an interesting kick of Worcester sauce in there. Dessert was a decadent and dense bourbon glaze bread pudding (no raisins) that made me crave a coffee to wash it down. Apparently it's a dry county but restaurants and the tavern can sell beer, wine, and liquor- so if you're visiting the college, come here for your sips of Kentucky bourbon. A $30 breakfast voucher was included on a website special for booking a room online, and for our voucher, we got two coffees a Classic Tavern Breakfast of eggs, local farm sausage, herbed breakfast potatoes, and biscuit; and a yogurt & granola plate, and a slice of banana nut bread. read more

Not impressed one bit. The historic hotel was pretty but otherwise nothing here was impressive. It really stinks when you spend a good amount of money on a meal only to be so disappointed. We ordered two lunch meals and had water to drink and walked away spending like $40. If the food was good, that would have been a different story. We started with spoon bread - so bland. I ordered the Mac and cheese with pulled pork. It did get a little better as it sat a short time but still not very good! Especially for $21 - wowza! Hubby ordered the grilled chicken club sandwich. It had good taste but the chicken breast was tiny compared to the large bun. The fries were just alright also. So bummed we wasted money here when there are so many good restaurants! NBD My dining partner had the chicken in a nest; not exciting but sturdy fare and the mashed potatoes were spot on. I enjoyed the butternut squash ravioli and the leftovers were great for breakfast the next morning... LOL Bread pudding could've been a little less sweet, maybe skip the layer of sugar on top. This very lovely colonial/southern style hotel built in 1909 manages to retain its original style and charm without showing any of its age. The rooms are up to date, but evoke images of what we might have experienced a 100 years ago. It has two large, charming, and yet cozy feeling lobbies to curl up in. Also in warmer weather the porches are a great place to sit and talk or read. There is also a great restaurant with real tablecloths and saucers for your coffee or tea. Truthfully the food seems a little underpriced considering how good it is and how beautiful the dining room is. Even if you don't spend the night, try for at least one meal. But wait, there is more. A small, very nice bar sits off one of the lobbies if you are in the mood for a relaxing drink. Now for the staff. They were all super friendly and seemed to truly enjoy working there. We stay every year or two and have never been disappointed. It is worth it to choose a weekend just to visit the charming college town of Berea and stay at Boone Hotel (named after Daniel Boone). Boone Tavern is a famous historic Berea College landmark. When I first moved to the area I was told about the famous Spoon Bread. I had never heard of such a bread. Naturally this hotel restaurant became the place for all my special occasion dinners during the time I lived there. When I return to visit eating a meal here is a must. The menu has plenty of choices I can enjoy. The food is prepared to order. All ingredients are fresh and as far as I know local sourced. I've never had a meal I didn't enjoy. Boone Tavern is definitely a beautiful setting to celebrate a birthday or just enjoying a meal with old friends. We are new to the area and moved to Berea last September. On the two occasions that we have thought to try the ambiance of the Tavern dining room, we have been completely disappointed with the service. Our previous dinner with out of town guests included extremely slow service. We had to ask our waitress three times about the "included" spoon bread and finally received a portion as we were finishing our dinner. The food was just okay, but reasonable enough for the ambiance. The dining room was not busy or full. We waited and waited for our final bill and finally had to inquire about it. This morning, we thought we would try breakfast while on our morning walk. We were seated and then ignored. We waited at least 10 minutes while we read the menu. We had our choices planned, but no one came to bring water or to offer coffee. We never saw a single waiter or waitress in the dining room. Once again, it was not busy. There were perhaps 6 other people in the room. We decided to leave, but we did stop to comment to the woman Maitre d that had seated us and explained that the service was lacking and that fast service was not evident. As we walked away, we heard her say, "that's okay, we're not in a hurry here". Wow! Just wow!!! If this is representative of the caliber of service and attitude that is expected of the staff and/or students at Boone Tavern, then the showcase of the establishment of the Tavern to highlight the college to visitors has completely failed. We love living in Berea. We chose Berea. The Boone Tavern does not represent the hospitality or charm of this wonderful Appalachian town, and does not even offer a level of service that we can get at little hometown diners here. Our first time staying here, and dining here, upon recommendation from friends. The hotel was remodeled a few years ago. It's quaint and comfortable. Service from front desk and staff was great. Very cool historic hotel. Room is very comfortable and clean. No complaints. The dining room was also very nice. Our meals were all very good. Well presented. Ruth, our server took great care of us. A real disappointment. In-laws visiting from out of state were very eager to try this place and it was a major let-down. Got seated around 5:30 on a Saturday evening and the place was about 20% full (which may have been the first sign). Proceeded to check out the drink menu which was a decent collection of wines and beers - everything looking good so far (except the restaurant decor which was really lacking any feel or imagery of what you'd expect out of a place called Boone Tavern.... After an unusually long wait, our drinks finally arrived, and the red wine was "garage warm". While drinking wasn't our priority, it would have been nice to have red wine at room temperature (at least). Placed our appetizer order, and I have to say the cheese board was awesome. Easily enough for four people. We proceeded to place our main order. After several questions about the menu (which were answered with very un-inspired recommendations), we ordered the chicken nest, catfish, a salmon-salad, and soup. Dinner arrival took a very long time. I'd estimate 30 to 45 minutes. While one in our party specifically asked for the soup to be extra-extra hot , it arrived at room-temp. Started to eat my chicken nest and it was also cold. We flagged down our server and she promptly took the plates back. Upon return we were told that "maybe the heating station wasn't very hot". All this added another 15 minutes to our evening. We declined an offer for free desert, as we were starting to get bad vibes about the overall experience and had already been there for an hour or more. On to the food, the chicken nest was just awful. So bland and HS cafeteria-ish. I simply could not eat it. The house salad was nothing but packaged greens and a small cup of dressing. The salmon looked like a compressed piece of chicken breast (no color and about 1/4" thick). The catfish was over-breaded and literally sitting on about 4 lbs of cold french fries. Taste wise, the catfish was ok, but the salmon was just dense and unflavorful. Three of us left plates about 60% uneaten as we prepared to pay the bill. On the positive side, the management did knock some money off our bill and had we paid the full amount, we would have been very disappointed. Overall, we were very shocked at how disappointing and mundane the experience was. We would not consider going back. read more

On our first visit to Boone Tavern and restaurant several years ago we were very disappointed with our meal. Last week we had a totally different experience. The food was prepared farm to table and was fresh and tasty. The chicken salad croissant was excellent. The hot brown was prepared traditionally and had great flavor and satisfying. "This place is so boring, I'm about to put a turtleneck on" - my wife But that being said, our service feels like we have inconvenienced a dedicated drug addict. I'm not kidding. The atmosphere is the ideal of the south, the essence of charming. My wife said she wanted to plan a getaway for us from our five children. I insisted that we came to the Boone Tavern, because of the amazing spoonbread and Southern cuisine, mixed with excellent hospitality. Well, I feel like an idiot. I spent more money on childcare than our room and dinner combined, but still got the short end of the stick. We have been sitting here for 20 minutes with zero service, and our server brought us dry dispassionate bread. What a great disappointment. If you live in the greater Cincinnati area, I recommend skipping the 2 hour drive south, and stick with hotel 21 and maybe a meal at Boca. So much for convincing my wife that the southern charm of Boone Tavern is worth the sacrifice. Thank God the south will never rise again. The essence of the hotel is great. After 45 minutes, we got average fried chicken, a Kentucky hot brown covered in diabetes, and honestly wonderful green beans. We just received dessert - bourbon bread. You want the good news or the bad news? Actually they are the same...they serve alcohol now. Finally. But they closed the gift shop to turn it into a small bar and they serve you in the lobby of the hotel. And there are dirty glasses and loud conservations yelling over the piano player. It just feels wrong...serve it in the restaurant and the bar but keep it out of the lobby. There's a new chef in town and while it pains me to say it but the food just isn't as good as it always has been. And it sure isn't cheap to dine here...2 drinks, a shared appetizer, 2 entrees and a shared dessert was more than $100. It wasn't awful, it just wasn't as good as it always has been. While I say it wasn't awful, the fried devil eggs were spitting out awful. What was I thinking? But you gotta try something new, don't you. Loved the spoon bread but they were stingy with it. And Bread Pudding, while tasty, was the consistency it should be. Was more coffee cake like. It's still drop dead beautiful, and it is the nicest place in town for dining. But I think from now on I'll just remember what it used to be like. And the rooms here are nice, but you need to spring for a suite or it's very, very small. read more

Staffed with extremely well trained college students from Berea college, we enjoyed the fine dining experience and beautiful dining room. Dinner was served with the Boone Tavern "Spoon Bread". As always, my better half ordered French Onion Soup au Gratin and said it was wonderful, but not the best she's ever tasted. Also, eating light this night, she further consumed the Tavern Green Salad and was satisfied with its quantity and quality. I had the signature "Boone Tavern Hot Brown...A Kentucky tradition for 98 years: shaved ham and turkey topped with creamy Mornay sauce, sliced tomatoes, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese and then browned to perfection." Glad I had this Kentucky tradition that was tasty, but not something I would usually order. The bill was extremely reasonable at $50 with the tip and no drinks. read more

Really enjoyed our dinner here. It's not cheap but it's a good change of pace. Started with the Caprese salad. Then We both had the filet mignon with really tasty roasted potatoes and asparagus. I was very disappointed in this hotel. The room was extremely small, parking near the hotel was limited, the furniture was old and very scuffed, the air conditioner was so loud one could hardly hear anything making sleeping difficult. That brings me to the beds which were old, squeaky, the mattress was so lumpy and felt as if a spring was sticking in my back. For a hotel that advertised itself as a luxury hotel, I would call that false advertising. Oh, we could also hear all of the noise in the hallway. And there was no one to help us with our bag. Let's just start by saying we were all looking forward to going here for Mother's Day as this place was top notch and fancy. First of all the dress code has been dropped and you no longer have to dress up. Any attire is welcome. Started our meals with the fried green tomatoes , fried deviled eggs and cocktail shrimp. Tomatoes and eggs were good. Cocktail shrimp were mushy from being frozen. The strawberry salad was ok but not worth $12 and the balsamic dressing was so sour it was awful. Then we get to the entree's. Three of us ordered chicken francaise with mashed potatoes and broccoli had an ok taste but for $28 you would think you would get a whole breast not a half. The sauce on it was nonexistent. The whole dish was cold. One person had the halibut and wild rice and asparagus. For $32 you would think you would get a whole filet not just a 4 ounce piece. Wild rice was just plain nothing special and the asparagus looked like it was leftover from the night before. Their plate of food was cold also. The last person in our party got the gnocchi. That was the worst meal in the group. Frozen gnocchi with a can of pea soup poured on top. Boones tavern is known for their spoon bread. We asked several times for some bread and was told they would bring it out when we started to get our food. Will we got our bill and paid and was still sitting there and the waitress came by and asked it there was anything else we needed and we told her we were not leaving till they brought us some bread. We were there for 2 hours and 20 minutes from the time we sat down at the table. I don't mind paying for a good meal and service but the meal and service we got for $300 was horrendous. The hotel was historically lovely. Hotel room was small, but clean. Bed not super comfortable, though. Good bathroom. Do. Not. Eat. At. The. Restaurant. Repeat. Do. Not. Eat. At. The. Restaurant. I'm pretty sure the food was as old as the hotel. It was cold; probably due to the 30+ minute wait for the entrees after the salad. The chicken had no flavor. The halibut was rubbery. The rice almost made me throw up in my mouth. The wedge salad was good, but not sure how you would mess that up? They need a new head chef ASAP to salvage what would otherwise be a good experience. We had lunch at the Boone Tavern Hotel main dining room. My wife's chicken salad sandwich was very good. Same for my onion soup and strawberry salad. Service was good, and ambiance is very nice. read more

What an amazing experience we had during our stay at this historic hotel! At first sight, you see this welcoming veranda with lots of chairs, tons of colorful flowers and plants with just enough ceiling fans to make your sit outside comfortable even on otherwise hot days. All the landscaping was vibrant and highly impressive! The building itself is a gem and the inside is well-appointed with elegant, detailed furniture and furnishings. There is a grand piano in the lobby and two computers for your use just off the lobby. One thing of great note is that it is a gold-certified Leeds Hotel which means it is a green building and is an environmentally-conscious choice. The gold level means they have gone above and beyond others with only one other level above them out of four. Two examples of this just in our room was that there are full-sized shampoo/body wash and conditioners in the bathroom (instead of those little ones that never hold quite enough to do their task) plus there is a master switch right next to the door so that everything is turned off when no one is in the room. I think I need one of them in my home! The beds were very comfortable, too and most all of the wonderful furniture in the rooms were made by students or staff from Berea College itself. Students from Berea college work here along with the other professional staff and they are so welcoming and personable. Hearing how Berea College is changing their lives is incredible! One of them took us on a tour of the Inn. He let us know that the building was erected in 1909 and during their century anniversary there was a multi-million dollar renovation. This doesn't surprise me as I was noting that it doesn't have that musty old smell that you notice in older inns sometimes. The restaurant is a real asset to enjoy. As a matter of fact, I have been to eat there twice before and it was always a dining pleasure. One of the things they are known for is something called spoon bread. It is a butter, egg, cornbread version which could be described as a heavy souffle. The wait staff walks around and spoons out some to each diner. I liked it so much that I looked up the recipe to enjoy at home. Before the hotel was dry, but now has several wines and cocktails on it's menu. During the afternoon on the veranda, you can order drinks to have outside while you relax. The rest of the food is delicious! It was such a positive, relaxing experience that I will highly recommend it to everyone. read more
