My son was wanting to find the lodge in order to attend a wedding their in a week, so we traveled to Buckhorn in order to find it. I want to emphasize that this park isn't easy to get to. We were traveling from Morehead to the park, the same route my son will take next week. The roads are small and winding and you can't expect to get in a hurry. However, the views will be spectacular, especially in the spring while the red buds and dogwoods are in bloom. It took us just under 2 hours to travel the 85 miles. When we a arrived, there was very few people there. It was about 4:00 PM, so it was a little early for dinner or to check in. The dinning hall didn't open until 4:00 and I think it is only open Friday-Sunday. We were the only people dining. The view is beautiful, but the water level was down. It is still pretty early in the spring and I'm sure they are preparing for the spring rainy season. We both ordered the fried catfish with fries, hush puppies, and a side salad. The side salad was very small, but was OK. It could have been better. The catfish was very tasty and fresh. They could have been a little meatier, but were acceptable. The fries were good and hot. I was not a fan of the hush-puppies. They were obviously home made, but the spices were too strong or something, and I think they need to find a better recipe. There were several cabins on the way to the lodge. They don't have a campground, but a private one is near by. They have a few hiking trails, and from the looks of them, they would give you a pretty good workout. If you want to unplug and hide for a few days, this would be the perfect place. The lodge is small, but clean. However, there was no cell service, and no wi-fi. At least while we were there. I think if I wanted to find a nice quiet place to "reboot," this would be on the list.

All off the staff were super friendly and we also ate there the fried chicken was awesome and they only had WiFi at the lodge and no service on your phone any where else in the park. We also played putt putt golf and you can rent a pontoon boat for the whole day to go on the lake. I highly recommend going here it's very relaxing and away from everything.

I think you have to request for these for additional charge. I am not very picky on where I stay when I go hiking as long as it's clean. However, for the hotel itself I have to rate it 2/5 because of the missing basic appliances in the room, the room smells like stale smoke even if I asked for a non-smoking room, the shower pressure was so light it's just like dripping water, the internet signal was non- existent like I was back in the 90's, I feel like I was in the boonies because my Verizon is not getting any signal while I was inside the room, and the towels were very hard and has stains. I'm glad I brought my own towels.

I would recommend the hotel owners to look into mesh networks if there is a common issue with the wifi. In an area that has no cell coverage it is important for the hotels to have good wifi.

Camped here on a Saturday night recently -- I'd rented a cabin in the Gorge and backpacked here…read moreseveral times, but never car-camped. I think I was a little afraid that the campground would be similar to Miguel's -- lots of party-time people and little privacy. However, our small group was pleasantly surprised that many of the sites had their own sense of "place." While few of the sites are completely secluded, they at least have plenty of trees around them to give you a tiny bit of privacy. We got a double-pad site since we had two tents, and this was more than enough room. The pads are very generously sized, so if you have one of those ginormous 8-person tents that are bigger than a Manhattan studio apartment, you should have no issue setting it up. Each site comes with a picnic table (ours had 2 but not sure if that was because it was a double?) and a fire pit. You can purchase wood and ice at the campsite host. There are also some short but fun trails that lead off from Koomer Ridge, and I think at least one connects to the Rough Trail, which is a very long trail going through the Gorge that also lives up to its name. The only downside is you can hear the traffic from the road fairly easy, but giving how close the campground is to the main road, this isn't really surprising. I just figure it's part of the territory with car camping as opposed to backpacking.

Wonderful, spacious sites and nice clean facilities - what more do you really need? The campground is conveniently located near the highway and for short drives to the surrounding area for hiking, sightseeing and whatnot. There is access to at least one cliff trail at several points around the campground, and you're never too far from a pit toilet. But if those aren't your idea of a nice place to do your business, the actual restroom and shower facilities are amazingly clean. My only complaint is that the frogs don't know what "quiet time" means.
