Had the pleasure of experiencing their 'que while spending a day at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. They were parked at one of the food courts, and as a BBQ fan I could not resist getting my lunch from them! The truck smelled great as I approached, so I was getting excited to try their goods! I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and a basket of queso fries then waited patiently for my number to be called. Bingo! I heard my number and rushed up to grab my grub. As they had a selection of different regional BBQ sauces, I figured I'd try a few so I selected both a Carolina mustard-based sauce as well as a KC style sauce. All of the food was delicious, and it was fun to mix and match bites of the sandwich with different 'que sauces. Hope I run into these folks again, at some other venue around town! read more

While at the zoo back in the wintertime, I opted to get food from this food truck versus pizza, which my son got. I got the Beef Brisket Sandwich with fries. It was $20! It was pricey, but good. I got some bbq sauce to add on top. I got my food very quickly. No complaints really. I'd eat from them again. read more

Today I visited Bootheel BBQ Food truck at the Smithsonian Zoo. I had high hopes because my experience with D.C food trucks has always been excellent ; however a good experience is not what I received from Bootheel. When I walked to the window, I was not greeted by anyone and actually believed they were closed for a few minutes. I ordered the chicken nuggets and fries but before I could finish my order the woman at the window walked off. I stood there with my young child who had his heart set on chicken nuggets so when she came back I proceeded with my order which included an extra fry and two gatorades. She told me the total and walked off AGAIN! I did not receive a receipt or any information on how long the food would take to be ready. I sat at a table close by the truck so I could keep an eye on when my food would be ready. About five minutes later the woman at the window randomly yells NINE out of the truck window once. I look around and assume the food belongs to me because, again I did not get a receipt and she's maybe spoken 3 words to me for the entirety of our interaction. So I go to the window to collect the food I paid almost $35 for and she hands me the food without saying anything and without any condiments. I didn't receive ketchup, mustard or at the very least BBQ sauce! When I ask for BBQ sauce and Honey mustard she did not say anything but did not look happy about it and only gave me one of each. I sat down to eat the worst nuggets and fries I have ever tasted because my son took one bite and said it tasted weird. He was right. He fed his fries to the birds and I chalked it up to a lesson learned. I won't be repeating this mistake. read more

Food was delicious but the lady taking orders at the National Zoo was horrible! She was mean to someone many people. When we got in the line, the lady taking orders was in disagreement with the couple in front of us. The couple did not order and left. Then we were at the window and I was giving my order and she yelled at me asking if the little boy opening the drink fridge was ours. He was not but he was just trying to get a drink. We gave her our order but when we picked it up, we did not get one of our southern sides. I asked and was told that we did not pay for the second side and brushed me off. The lady taking the orders continued to be loud and rude to the customers after us too. We sat near your food truck and could hear the comments. Your barbecue was great. However, this particular staff member needs lessons in hospitality. read more

As Helen O said, the zoo location, food was good but the workers were miserable and rude. The young man didn't say one word to me, not when taking the order (he just stood their pretending not to see me for about 3-4 minutes), not when handing me my order, not when I had to ask for my other order of fries or bbq sauce. It was almost like they had something against me from the get go. Same with the older woman. Not one word at all. How can you be so mute, miserable, and rude in the food service industry? Again food was good and it's a shame the quality of workers they have. Not a pleasurable experience. Very, very awkward and I wouldn't recommended going there with these type of employees. read more

This meal was $16.00......sixteen American dollars......... I ordered the 2 meat platter. I'm giving them 2 stars for the customer service and the mustard bbq sauce. But the Mac and cheese literally has zero flavor. It's like they boiled pasta shells and then just stirred in a pinch of shredded cheese?????? The brisket was chewy and the ribs barely had any meat on the bone. I was also expecting the brisket to be sliced brisket...not shredded. Beware of their unethical business practices. I went to the food truck that is at the Smithsonian Zoo. I paid and signed for $41. Before I could hit "next" after singing, the attendant flips the iPad and adds himself a tip on my credit card. It is not a service fee but a tip which I did not approve. If you can, just pay cash because they can charge you any amount they please without your consent. read more

We hired this food truck for our Food Truck Event for 299 of our residents a month ago and David (the owner) decided to CANCEL YES CANCEL 2 hours before starting time of the event. We only hired 1 other truck SHOUT OUT TO SAFFRON GOURMET- CHECK THEM OUT INSTEAD, THE PROFESSIONALISM WAS AMAZING AND SAFFRON GOURMET WAS MORE THAN PREPARED FOR THE LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM THAT BOOTHEEL HAD. David was also aware that there was only his truck and Saffron for this event. David's excuse on the DAY OF THE EVENT WAS "MY TRUCK ISN'T WORKING." Which I found to be very inappropriate considering he requested for ADDITIONAL TIME BECAUSE HE FELT AS IF HE WANTED TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE TRIP!!!! He also received an email from my company the morning of the event to inform him of details and also ask any questions that he may have had and did not respond to that email instead waited until it was to late to request another truck. His response to not being able to come was less than a sincere apology. This was extremely disappointing and I will not be using or referring this truck to anyone else. David, thanks for responding but all I'm saying is that when you were having trouble with your truck I should have been notified then so that I could prepare for a back up, plain and simple. Tried the food truck today in Rockville (Derwood) and it was a waste of money. Giving it 3 stars as the customer service was nice and the chicken/sausage gumbo had a good taste. Ordered a large and the small container wasn't even full. The shrimp po-boy had 6 small shrimp (seasoned well) and the bread was to big and hard. I'd suggest a smaller bun if this size/quantity of shrimp are being used. Ok, now the Mac-n-Cheese, they use big noodles with a heavily loaded bread crumb consistency with "where the heck is the cheese"? Even if a rue is made, please give me some cheese. Total scam. I ordered a shrimp po' boy and got four small shrimp on a soggy hot dog bun with mayonnaise. I paid $11 for this honor. My recommendation to the food cart: Buy better quality bread, toast the bun, and add couple additional shrimp. Maybe then the sandwich will be worth the price you charge. read more

I strongly recommend Bootheel for your catering needs. We have used them several times and the quality of the food and service have always been superb. We have had them cater everything from a formal holiday dinner to a lunch in a country field and their dishes are always perfect. David is a pleasure to work with, even when I modify the menu several times. The service staff are so professional and friendly. What a bummer! I tried their food truck today in Ballston and what a let down. The pulled pork was dry (tacky against my teeth), the coleslaw was super under dressed and the brussels were not seasoned (tons of pepper, not a lot of salt and just MEH). The only saving grace was the NC Mustard BBQ sauce. I think BBQ is so approachable these days that everyone is doing it. But that being said, that also means your competitors are capable BBQ'ers as well. There are a handful of BBQ trucks that roll through Ballston plus two local joints nearby and this truck would be the last on my list to eat at. read more

Absolutely knocked it out of the park, My wife and I were hosting a whole hog pig roast for Family which came from all corners of the country to share the wedding of my daughter,last evening. For the rehearsal dinner/family reunion I thought I would introduce them to the real Southern cuisine star ,a wonderful slow cooked pig . It was absolutely succulent nose to tail with traditional sides and a friendly pitmaster David Newton .He interacted with my guests and family professionally as well with true Southern hospitality. He arrived on time ,impressed us with his deft hand at smoking ,packed up the leftovers and left the area as clean as the area was at our countryside venue. Been in the food business for over 30 years an this experience has been one of the great ones. Will be doing more business in the future read more

Best BBQ I've had EVER! Just had Bootheel at the National Zoo. I bought the collard greens and the jambalaya. Both were extraordinarily delicious. The greens are not what a normal person may expect (bland, bitter, & boring). They were full of flavor, very tender, and down right tasty. The jambalaya really packs the flavor with a great heat added to it. It wasn't too much at all for my taste buds. The portions at the zoo were generous for a place like it. I will definitely be trying it again and may even have them cater my baby shower in October read more

I have used Bootheel Catering for several events and been to other events that Bootheel has catered. It is without question my all time favorite in Northern VA. A class act that has delivered a great full fixens meal on every occasion. The brisket is top notch and the sides have never disappointed. I have to admit that the hush puppies are even better than my Moms, which were my standard since ever. It has the look, taste and feel of a backyard BBQ done by someone who knows comfort food. I used Bootheel Catering for my dad's 75 birthday party and a Super Bowl party. The food and service were nothing less than fabulous!

We hired Bootheel Catering for our wedding reception for 170 people. It was an open house so our guests were coming to our home starting at 5:00 pm until well into the night. David Newton worked closely with our wedding planner to make sure all of the details were covered. He came to our home(venue) twice in the months before the wedding to talk about the menu and calculate the staff that would be needed for the event. He arranged to staff passed appetizers, two bars, the meal and desserts. It was well coordinated throughout the night and many guests were commenting weeks after the event about how delicious all of the food was. The party was such a success that the last guests left at 2 am and David made sure that we had staff for one bar until we were ready to call it quits. Everything was cleaned up before the staff left and put into containers and packed away in the refrigerator. We did not have to lift a finger. Note: Our reception wasn't a backyard barbeque by any means - the food was prepared so everyone felt like it "fit" the occasion. If you hire David and his team you will not be disappointed.
