I've sang in a lot of places, in pubs, clubs, bars, coffee shops, bookstores, malls, outdoor festivals, streets, subways, you name it. But unlike James Corden, I've never Sang On Wheels. This food truck, though, has. What to get: whatever she gives you. That's not just for this truck but general advice for life. Amazing service from a woman that really cares and will stuff your box (so to speak) full of all kinds of crazy wild food. The service definitely gets a 5. The prices and food are a 4. They are good but not amazing. You get a ton of food, including meatballs and drunken noodles and all sorts of other weird stuff. It's all good but none of it was like, omg wow I can't wait to come back. The Thai Tea Bubble Tea was pretty yum, but the bubbles in it were not so fresh at all. I'd have enjoyed it more if I had ordered it without bubbles. Overall a great experience. My first food in DC after driving non stop from Pittsburgh, where I had just driven to from Buffalo. A crazy long drive which ended in me eating a ton of food from this truck and so it will always be a really positive memory for me. Customer Service is a big deal to me - especially when it comes to food trucks. In the case of Sang on Wheels, few come close to how amicable they are. This was my second visit in three years only because, until the DC Food Truck Lottery (love it or hate it), they did not visit near my work very often. I didn't recall from my first visit anything extraordinary about their service, but that was not long after they started...I think their first week. Anyway now, Sang on Wheels seems to go out of their way to leave a positive impression with each and every customer. In my case, not only did I get what I ordered, she doubled the amount of noodles that would typically come with the meal and added extra chicken too. This was no exception as my coworker got the same and we were each given free egg rolls too. I also ordered the Asian Empanada which is apparently a new offering. Overall, the chicken and noodles I would give a 3 or 3.5...but the volume of food for the money bumps it to a solid 4. The egg rolls and empanadas? 5.0 hands down. The impact of the DC Food Truck Lottery has largely been negative for the consumer in the Foggy Bottom area as variety is sorely lacking compared to before. But this is one exception where they brought an elusive truck back to my backyard. Check them out...but make sure that you are hungry! read more

Sang is my new must-visit foodtruck! I had become a big fan of hers through Yelp reviews and word of mouth, but all I could do was to watch her pop up in other neighborhoods via her Twitter feed, and even then her occasional appearances were as unpredictable as a groundhog, due to her splitting her time between running her food truck and cutting hair (see reviews for SangInWoodleyPark). Now she spends most of the week serving food (I heard you can also order food from her salon!), but due to the new DC Food Truck lottery system, it's become difficult for her to find a decent downtown parking space so she's been branching into other neighborhoods, incluidng ours -- their loss, our gain! For nine bucks, you get a styrofoam box crammed to the brim with fried rice or Asian noodles (conventional Pad Thai or Lao Drunken Noodles, which use the same wide rice noodles in Thai Pad See Ew or Chinese Chow Fun), topped by a couple of grilled chicken sate skewers, lamb or beef meatballs, or a mountain of tofu (for you vegetarians). For a few bucks more, you can add a spring roll, egg roll, Asian empenada, a cup of soup, or whatever else she decided to make that day. And a few bucks more will get you a quart-sized container of Lemon Tea, Thai Iced Tea, Bubble Tea, or whatever else she decided to make that day. If you're a regular, she might slip a lagniappe or two into your bag! (And unlike other food trucks, she doesn't try to collect the annoying DC bag tax from you). Food portions are huge (especially if you add one or two of her sides) and Sang always welcomes you with a smile, no matter how bad the weather outside may be. Again, I'm forced to eat out for lunch. This time I used my trusty food truck app and spotted Sang on Wheels. Is there gonna be someone singing? Just kidding. I was happy to see Lao food served by real Laos. I mean, you just can't get that unless you know a Lao. Or you get lucky and go to the Buddhist temple in Fairfax for Lao New Year. Or, to be honest, just go to any Thai restaurant because they're practically the same. :) Anyway. I had the Drunken Noodles combo with a Crispy Spring Roll on the side. Cost was around $12. First I devoured the Spring Roll. You have to, before it gets soggy. After the 10 minute walk back to my desk It held up to being enclosed with the noodles absorbing the steam. It was still crispy and the flavor of the meat was good. Let me just say that Sang's Drunken Noodles were friggin' outstanding. The noodles were cooked to perfection. The sauce had the right amount of fish and soy sauce, chilis and basil. They totally did it right here. The meats were tender and had that slight charring from the griddle. I felt like I went back to Thailand (I've never been to Laos, so I had to go with the next best thing). Or better yet, eating that was like being at someone elses grandmas house, throwing a mat on the floor and sitting down cross-legged and eating authentic food of their homeland and you don't have to speak the language to show how much you're appreciating it. Food truck offering delicious and generous Thai and Laos dishes. My friend and I spontaneously choose Sang on Wheels when meeting for a quick lunch. I had the drunken noodles with tofu, which was also full of vegetables and delightfully spicy. My friend had the tofu pad thai, also full of broccoli and bean sprouts. Both portions were more than enough for us, so we ended up with leftovers. We also both received complimentary giant drinks - Thai iced tea for me and the Thai iced coffee for her - which provided more than enough sugar and caffeine for the rest of the day. The service was quick - even by food truck standards - but also friendly and patient with those of us who struggle with menu decisions. It is true that the lady running the cart is very nice, and she gives you heaps and heaps of food. The pad thai was the better of the two, but it was certainly a curious version of the dish. The noodles were cellophane, and the sauce was a lot sweeter than usual. Normally I would give food of this quality 2-2.5 stars, but this place deserves the boost because the lady who runs the truck is incredibly affable and enjoys giving free items to her customers, especially later in the afternoon. I ordered chicken sate over half drunken noodles and half fried rice. Not only was the portion humongous, but the lady offered me complimentary egg rolls as well as Thai iced tea. And my meal only costs $9! But, the food does have issues. The chicken is relatively insipid and particularly dry. A nice sauce or more noticeable rub would surely enhance its flavor. I hadn't re-tried this truck in nearly a year, and with two of my co-workers visiting nearly every week and raving, I wondered what I missed on my first visit and decided to try it again today. I decided not to order the dish I didn't like last time (pad thai) and went for the drunken noodles instead with the meat balls. The drunken noodles were prepared well - had a bit of a kick (not super spicy), not too overdone and packed with vegetables (carrots and broccoli) as well as chicken and tofu. Instead of the chicken skewers, I went for the meat balls. They were very large and well-prepared, although could have used some more seasoning. I have to admit, though, I felt a little strange eating meatballs with thai food...just a quirk of mine, I guess. My dish was $9, which wasn't bad for how much food you got (I should have cut my dish in half, it could have easily been two lunches). I didn't get an egg roll with my order this time so i can't comment on that. Overall...this visit definitely improved my opinion of this truck. Still haven't gotten out of the three-star category - definitely a solid "A-OK" in my book...but I won't avoid this truck if I see it at State Department like I used to. read more

Hands down the best food truck service. The woman who runs it is just a ball of energy and cheer. I don't think I even ordered - she just handed me soup and food and a thai iced tea. For $11-13 combos you get way more than other food trucks at comparable prices. So many things wrong. I had the pad thai and it was nothing like pad thai that I'm used to. The noodles were clear vermicelli noodles, not the normal rice noodles. The sauce was more like it was floating in the think orange duck sauce from Chinese restaurants, not a nice light sauce that is usually with Pad Thai. No egg and very few veggies (I ordered veggie pad thai). It had only a little broccoli and carrots on top. While it wasn't what I would call a Pad Thai it did taste ok, but sweet. I really really really wanted to love this place, but alas, my hopes that I would get amazing Laotian street food were crushed when I had this truck's version of drunken noodles. Maybe I just don't like drunken noodles? I don't know, but these just were not good. I have to say, the lady running the truck is adorable and generous. She gives you A LOT of food and if you are poor and hungry, this might be a decent $8 to spend. That's where the good stops though...the bad is, the food is almost inedible! The noodles were gluey, gooey and the meatballs? Why? they are basically just dense balls of meat. No flavor at all and do not add anything to the dish. I have no idea why it's even offered. The meats offered (shrimp, chicken and beef) I think are just boiled. They have NO FLAVOR. It's basically just thrown in for good measure. Can you at least put a little seasoning on it? Whatever is in the drunken noodles themselves is not enough! I think the tofu is the best part really, but even that is bland. Overall, this dish is a hot mess. My vegetarian drunken noodles included a generous heaping of chewy wide rice noodles, broccoli (could be cut a little smaller), julienned (used loosely) carrots, and fried tofu. Sang's version wasn't spicy, but it was well-seasoned otherwise. I appreciated that it wasn't overly salty, as many drunken noodle renditions can be. The noodles also weren't clumpy and perfectly al dente, another point for that. An appeal to the owner: give this dish some heat and make the broccoli more bite-size, and it'll be even better! At nine bucks, the vegetarian drunken noodles is an average-priced item from a DC food truck. Adding a protein like shrimp will of course bring your price up a little more. Nothing outrageous, typical. Though not extraordinary, Sang on Wheels, from what I have tried so far, provides tasty and fresh to-go meals. The food truck phenomenon is alive and well here in D.C. The fact that it extends to Laotian food is proof enough that D.C. folk are serious about their trucks. It is a real treat to be exposed to such a variety of food, great flavors, and all at a nominal price. With that said though, Sang on wheels lies in the lower to middle portion of the spectrum for me. I wasn't taken with anything they offered up, but nothing was egregiously bad either. For $8, I was able to get a drunken noodle and beef BBQ combo. This was served in a rectangular styrofoam take-out container that easily weighed a pound or two. The lady really packs in the food. The drunken noodles, beyond the noodles, consisted of a sauce, some very large carrot slices, and a handful of proteins: tofu, shrimp, and chicken. The noodles were thick and sopped up the flavor of the spicy saucy pretty well. The flavor wasn't refined in any way though, consistent with street food standards really. The chicken was pretty bland and a touch dry. The shrimp were overcooked and few in number. Surprisingly, the tofu was the best of the proteins. Like the noodles, it really took on a lot of flavor and added some texture to the dish. If I were to order this again, I would just go with the vegetarian option. Rounding out the combo was the beef BBQ which was really just 2 beef meatballs. They were huge, tightly packed, lacking in flavor, and entirely incongruous with the rest of the meal. In all, there was a focus on quantity and value over quality. Ideal for the hungry and budget-conscious, but disappointing for the discerning. Until today, I thought Sang on Wheels was just a myth. I've heard of it, seen it's menu, even scoped it out but we have never crossed paths. Obviously when I found out it would be near my office I had to check it out. I'm not gonna lie, I had pretty low expectations for Sang on Wheels. But maybe that just has to do with its elusiveness and that I've never heard people talk about it in the way that they talk about Sauca or El Floridano. I have a soft spot for drunken noodles so deciding was pretty simple. For $6, I got a relatively small box packed with noodles, tofu and veggies. These were some good drunken noodles. They were loaded with basil-y goodness and had just a touch of spice to elevate the flavors. The addition of cabbage was a little strange and unnecessary but that can be easily overlooked. I wanted to try the Laotian egg rolls too but I just cannot justify spending $5 on three egg rolls. Maybe next time? The BBQ pork looked pretty tasty so I shall return if I can ever find this truck again. read more

Lots of flavor that I wish my basic palate could discern and describe. I'm not a drunken noodles fan because most places pile on mostly noodles, but this lady does it right. The tofu is excellent, too, but I'd still opt for the lamb. As others mentioned, the veggies rock. Crunchy and fresh. No one could accuse Sang of overcooking anything. Tried them for the first time today by Foggy Bottom. Pretty cool to try Laotian food out of a truck! The only other Laotian place I know is in Falls Church and I haven't been there yet. They had BBQ chicken, lamb and pork, which are all basically ground meat kabobs (with Asian flavors) on a stick. The $8 combo gets you 4 meatballs on a stick + either fried rice (they have shrimp fried rice too!) or Laotian egg rolls. I went with my coworker and he got the lamb, while I got the chicken. Both were good, but I really liked the lamb - juicy and flavorful. The egg rolls were good too - large and not too greasy. I thought that the food was full of flavor, but it just seemed like too much was going on. I had soup with seafood in it. The shrimp tasted good, but he mussels were horrible fishy mess. I tried Sang on Wheels yesterday for the first time during lunch. I've been meaning to try this because it was advertised to have Laotian cuisine and since that's my ethnic background I was excited to try it. Don't get me wrong, I am fully aware that things would have to be toned down to cater to..a different palate if you will. However, I was not fully satisfied with my meal. The menu itself was a little confusing but I decided on the Chicken Pad Thai and Tom Yum soup. Why am I getting Thai dishes at a Laotian food truck? Beats me. The soup was good and the spices were toned down compared to what you would find at a stand-alone Thai restaurant. She is very generous with her portions though! The price was decent for my combo, I paid $11. Now the Pad Thai I had, it was made with cellophane noodles instead of rice which doesn't bother me at all because I've had aunts make it that way as well. Plus it all works out if someone is actually allergic to rice. The way I see it, Laotian "Pad Thai" is more of a stir-fry noodle and not as peanut-y as the Thai version. I loaded the Pad Thai with a lot of Sriracha because I like my food spicy. It's what I've grown up with. The Pad Thai itself was extremely sweet and as much Sriracha I put in I couldn't get past it. I was so excited when Sang on Wheels came to Metro Center--I'd been meaning to try it out forever, and I already knew exactly what I was going to order! Unfortunately, the drunken noodles + beef balls + mango/sticky rice was underwhelming. the noodles were waaaaay overdone, and a lot of them were stuck together in large stacks--which also meant that they weren't very evenly or well-flavored. The beef balls were fine, except both of mine were burnt on the bottom. The mango in the mango/sticky rice were tasty (except one piece, which was hard...oh well), the rice was nice and coconut-milk-y...but I also think it may have been the thing that made me sick. One thing I really enjoy about DC's food truck scene, is the diversity it can bring to your lunch time. Instead of having to get food at that sandwich place on the corner or that other sandwich place on the other corner, you can choose from Indian, Korean, Italian, Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Mexican, or even Laotian all within a block from your office. I am not sure how much I would frequent Sang on Wheels if it was Sang on Brick and Mortar, but I do like having the option. Ordering drunken noodles from Sang on, you will receive the heaviest container of food you can imagine (if Sang on was one of those pay per pound delis, I think the meal would cost a fortune) - at $10 for a combo meal it is definitely more than enough food for your dollar. The actual noodles themselves are okay if, as others have mentioned, a little clumpy. The meat is also good but only lightly marinated and plopped on top, instead of being mixed in with whatever noodle stir fry you choose. The fresh and plentiful vegetables are a nice surprise. But the sauce is the stand out - spicy and sweet and extremely flavorful. I would order from Sang on Wheels again for that delicious sauce. read more

I just finished eating my drunken noodles with lamb. I wanted so badly to love this truck - an old coworker of mine gave it rave reviews a few months ago. Okay, the good: -The portions, as everyone says, are HUGE. I received a ton of fresh vegetables and my lamb meatballs were cooked really well. -My lemonade tea is great. I'm drinking this stuff out of a giant plastic cup, so again, definitely getting my money's worth here. Not amazing/to die for, but it's appropriately sweet and the flavor is good. The bad: -I sadly had to throw 50% of my drunken noodles away because the bottom half was just swimming in oil. I should have taken a picture for you guys, it was that bad. I used the top half of the container to fish out the noodles and veggies that were worth saving/eating. It was way too much grease/oil even for me, and I spent five years in Atlanta eating many deep fried things. Maybe this is a one-time occurrence, but yeesh, it was extremely off putting. -What I did wind up eating was mediocre at best. I eat more than my fair share of Pan Asian food in this town and have gotten much better food from other trucks with similar fare. I understand the cook is trying to keep the lines short and her customers happy, but a little more time and just a tad more flavor would go miles. In short, the food is passable. My only gripe WAS that the veggies weren't soft....I later decided that it was a good thing, because it kept it's nutrients and taste. I was so excited to try this truck after reading all the reviews and hearing raves about it from folks in my office. First off, I want to kidnap Sang and take her home and force her to be my new grandmother. This woman is so unbelievably sweet and kind and I want her all to myself. (Just kidding, sort of). The day a friend and I went they were handing out free lemonade and Thai iced tea. I got the lemonade and it was HUGE. Literally a bucket of crisp, not-too-sweet, perfect lemonade. My friend got the Thai iced tea and it was also very tasty, although not as sizable. But, hey, they were free so no complaints here! The food. I really wanted to like the food more than I did and that sucks. It sucks because I LOVE Sang but the food was...meh. I got the drunken noodles with chicken and I will say that it was a huge portion and the chicken was all perfectly cooked and piled on. My issue is the same as others have mentioned, not so much on the flavor. Maybe I should have asked for spicy or something but I found the whole thing kind of bland and...clumpy? Is clumpy a word? Glumpy? Gooey and Clumpy? Anyway, tried my friend's pad thai and that was definitely better and had more kick to it. Think I will get that the next time I go. Also had a shrimp spring roll which was decent but liked friend's egg roll better. 1st things first.... The service is great... Love the owner (I assume she is the owner). She treated me great, served me quickly, and since I was a first time customer, she made sure I had a taste of everything. You have to appreciate that. The drunken noodles are pretty tasty and a good size portion. Of the meats she added in there, the shrimp could have been cooked with a little more seasoning and were my least favorite. Though I have to say that they did not use the small shrimp, which is great to see. The chicken, while a little bit dry, was tasty. The tofu (and I am no tofu fan) was actually good. The meatballs are where it is at though. No prepackage stuff here. These are good meatballs. The veggies are still crunchy, which is excellent. And the iced tea, while wrecking my stomach because I am lactose intolerant, is good enough that I don't care what will be happening to my gut in about an hour. The lines at Basil Tyme and Far East Taco were miles long, so I decided to try this Laos food truck. I ordered the drunken noodles with tofu, which were very spicy! The tofu was a bit hard and the noodles were swimming in the sauce. Be aware that the sauce is filled to the top, so be careful holding the flimsy styrofoam container. The drunken noodles with shrimp features a sweet and spicy sauce, and plenty barely cooked vegetables and good-sized, clean-tasting shrimp that are also far from overcooked. I added a Laotian pork eggroll, which isn't anything special IMO, and lamb meatballs, which are (I'm eating while I write this) tender, large (two of them) and tasty, all for ten dollars. Portions must normally be huge, cause they only had a half-portion left (at half price). And I could barely finish it for lunch. Reminded me of some Thai and Vietnam dishes, but with a subtle twist is spices. Watching for it to return to Franklin Square to try other offerings. read more

Wow! I thought i liked drunken noodles, but these drunken noodles put every other order of drunken noodles before it to shame. Chock full of perfectly cooked (still plenty of crunch) vegetables and just the right amount of sweet/spicy sauce. The tofu i got on top was immaculately cooked and the serving was generous without being too much. Definitely going back to get the pad thai. I watched the person in front of me get pad thai with a HEAPING mound of sprouts on top with an equally generous scoop of peanuts. Looks fantastic. I discovered this food truck today and I love it so much I reinstalled Twitter on my phone so I can follow her. The drunk noodles are AMAZING and they cured my hangover. The portion was ridiculously big for $10, and she was also giving out free Thai iced teas. read more

I asked whether I should get the drunken noodles (vegetable) or the Pud Thai (with shrimp). I didn't entirely catch the rest of the verbal exchange except that the bbq was only 2 dollars more ($8) AND would include the Pud Thai. What happened next was that they started adding an enormous portion of an astounding array of food to the take away box. When I opened the box to dig in, I found that it contained generous piles of drunken noodles, Pud Thai, AND barbecue pork. I kind of want to give 5 stars because the price to portion ratio is excellent, there was great variety in a single order, and I had absolutely no complaints about the food, but I try to reserve 5 stars for things that stand out as a paragon of flavor.
