Dr Southgate is the best! I drive 2 hours round trip to go here because he has successfully diagnosed issues with my dogs for the past 15 years. If your dog doesn't have health issues, maybe any vet will do. If there's something going on that needs troubleshooting, he's the vet to diagnose and treat! read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. This is the absolute worst vet clinic in the world, they charge insane prices, convince you your pet needs procedures and tests that they absolutely do not need, they don't disclose pricing & downplay pricing until you go to the desk and get hit with a $900 bill for simple bloodwork. My one dog that I take here, they treated for heartworm ($3000) and she still has it somehow after three treatments. I take my other dogs to Banfield in Woburn and Melrose animal clinic, and both those vets charge half the price of what Borash charges. Trust me when I say, never go to this clinic. There is a reason they can get you an appointment next day any time you call (which is the only advantage of going here) - but it's because they clearly don't have alot of clientele due to their astronomical prices. Do yourself a favor and don't get absolutely raked for cash by this place. read more

We absolutely loved Dr Porier at Borash Vet but she moved. We started seeing Dr Gervitz who completely mismanaged our cats diabetes for months. By the time we changed vets, it was too late and she died less than 2 weeks later. Our cat was diagnosed with diabetes and started insulin at the end of September. Every 2 weeks, Dr Gervitz had us check her blood sugar at home with a glucometer a few times in one day to see the effect of the insulin. Her blood sugar was always above 400 and at times above 500 which is extremely high. Based on the results, Dr Gervitz would increase her insulin by 1 unit every 2 weeks (which needs to be slowly increased to avoid sudden low blood sugar). Testing our cats blood sugar at home required us to prick her ear which was distressing for her and seemed painful. I talked to a family member who's a vet out of state. She suggested applying a freestyle libre, which is a glucometer that stays on the cat for 15 days and connects to your phone so you can see her blood sugar any time you want. Dr Gervitz put her under sedation to apply it but the monitor malfunctioned so we never could use it. Weight loss is a symptom of diabetes but it's not good weight loss. They lose muscle mass which happened with our cat, eventually making her spine protrude and look malnourished. Dr Gervitz told us to increase her dry food several times to counter the weight loss. I questioned if the insulin wouldn't work because she was getting more and more carbs with the dry food. She gave an explanation about the glucose moving in and out of the cells and how carbs are used. I trusted that this was true and the right decision. Three months into her being on insulin and her symptoms were only worsening: drinking so much water, peeing so much and rapid weight loss. Our family member also suggested testing for a UTI because having a UTI can make cats insulin resistant and they're more likely to get UTIs when they have diabetes. Her urine showed she had very high glucose and a UTI so she started antibiotics. It was at this time that I expressed my frustration to Dr Gervitz since she only checked a urine because I suggested it. She initially said "we want to keep costs down for you." I said that we had already paid thousands of dollars throughout this process and that clearly the cost was not the reason she didn't do it. Dr Gervitz did apologize at that point and said she should have checked her urine sooner. I also said that we weren't doing enough because she continued to lose weight and was wasting away. I said I was afraid we weren't going to get the diabetes under control before she had lost too much weight. She told us to increase her dry food yet again. It was at this time that I made an appointment with a new vet, which was 3 weeks away. In that time, Dr Gervitz checked another urine which showed the UTI hadn't completely cleared so she got more antibiotics. Two weeks later, she checked another urine which showed the UTI was gone but still had high glucose. A few days later we saw the new vet. They were great and came up with a good plan. They said the type of insulin wasn't working so we changed to a different type. They were very confused why we were told to increase the dry food so much since it had so many carbs. They switched her to diabetic food and all wet food. We didn't even know there was diabetic specialty food because Dr Gervitz never mentioned it. I told the new vet that we would try applying a freestyle libre again but I felt bad putting her under sedation again. They again were very confused saying they've never had to put a cat or dog under sedation to apply it in over 10 years. They were able to apply it to our cat when she was fully awake. Unfortunately 11 days later she stopped eating and suddenly couldn't jump onto the couch. We brought her in and found out she was in a diabetic crisis from having high blood sugar for so long. She was critically ill with almost no chance of getting better, so we made the difficult decision to put her down. I really regret not changing vets sooner and know that if we had, we would have gotten her diabetes under control much faster. She probably never would have gone into diabetic crisis and could have lived so much longer. I can't speak for any of the other doctors at Borash Vet but I would stay far away from Dr Gervitz. read more

My ManiCat stopped seeing Dr. Southgate sometime after after we both moved locations, however my ManiCat reached nearly twenty years of age and that was with Dr. Southgate's appreciation and care of him. The many years we had with Dr. Southgate will never be forgotten and I will forever appreciate him. The testimony of Borash Veterinary Clinic is witnessed by the testimony of my dear Mani and his long, heathy, lifespan. In spite of severe asthma, heart problems, and also near death from eating the small bit of Christmas tree netting left on the tree trunk (watch out for this unknown danger..) ManiCat lived well and not without Dr. Southgate's watchful eye. The galaxy does not have enough stars to rate the competency, care and professionalism of this clinic, nor any clinic affiliated with the good fortune known as Dr. Southgate. EDIT: I'll never forget when Dr. Southgate was in North Reading and had the guts, but really professionalism and competency, to tell a shocked me that my Mani was too fat. This was super important, especially considering my Mani's health conditions and I remember this most because Dr. Southgate is such a doting doctor, but also a veterinarian of veterinarians, and he exhibited first hand that he will always do what is best for your pet, and this is why my Mani lived to nineteen. **Thank you, Dr. Southgate, thank you Borash Veterinary Clinic. If I could give this veterinary office zero stars I would I brought in a rescue cat that I found off the street in the middle of the winter while snow was on the ground and it was raining, it was awful the cat was in terrible shape was limping and was malnourished etc. it took me nearly 2 weeks to finally get an appointment with Barash who I am already a patient with my other animals. they proceeded to scan her microchip and they found her owner they told me that they would only called them a couple of times, they proceeded to make me wait 30 minutes while they got a hold of the owner then proceeded to treat me like I was a thief and I didn't rescue this cat they made me feel awful they told me that they were going to call animal control to see for neglect but then proceeded after I called for a follow up to check up on the Cat and told me that they had already situated a pick up for the cat and the owner though the owner was neglecting their cat and not obeying outside regulations especially in a cold environment, they returned her to an unsafe environment and then proceeded to give us wrong information on how we could go about knowing what happened to her and if she was in a safe environment. Furthermore, when they treat my animals they are very skittish they need three or four people in the room with them their bedside manner is not what it should be for a vets office as well as they expect me to sedate my animals before every vet appointment because they think they're too rambunctious. I don't know what vet office has been this scared of energetic animals but I will never recommend this to anyone I know! read more

Dr Southgate confirmed he had a yeast infection and they cleaned and medicated his ears and we were in and out in about 30 mins. We are new clients. Brought our dog here a couple times for routine vaccines and an overall physical. Very very nice staff. Very friendly and professional. Our dog is a little skiddish because he's a rescue and they made him feel comfortable. The follow up phone calls are very comforting. My only complaint is you have to wait outside. Unbelievably unprofessional behavior by Dr. Borash! Told us that our puppy was "very sick" and needed special treatments for a 102 temperature. I found out later that this is only slightly elevated. He even offered to come to our house to retake her temperature the next day since I was going out of town and my daughter doesn't drive. I can't recommend this vet clinic enough. Staff was amazing today when I brought in my chinchilla. They took my monetary concerns into consideration and when we realized dental X-rays were needed Dr. Borash made sure to personally to them today to save me having to make a second visit as he knew I had driven from Lowell in order to see a vet that specializes in exotics. We have a 14 year old cat suddenly got really sick, she suddenly stopped eating and was vomiting on her bed and was having watery diarrhea for 3 days. We took her to vet and found to be really dehydrated and also lost a lot of weight. Dr. Borash and the staff were so attentive and helped our cat, gave her IV fluids and some medicine. We were really scared that she would not make it. Dr. Borash was really caring and reassured us and our cat got better after a week. That said, everyone was nice and very professional and we are thankful for everything they've done for our Thalia. read more

I have had many animals Over the past 25 years and treat them all like my own children. I can honestly say that this clinic also treats my animals as if they were their children. They are given individual love, attention and care from all the staff. They are kind and gentle and if you prefer to sit on the floor with your pet when they are in need of treatment then no questions asked. My bull dog mix was spayed a few months ago (at a vet in NH) and for some reason the stitches never disolved and her incision looked like a hernia. I took her to Dr. B and he was awesome. My dog is a little afraid of people but she loves Dr. B. He got down and played with her. She was so happy. He had to redo her spay incision. He did a great job. You can't even tell she had surgery. VERY strange place. A couple examples - 1) We left our two dogs at the boarding facility (NOT the vet) only to be called by Dr. B while on vacation that they both had broken back teeth. A man i had never met went on for about 15 min about how important it was that we deal with it ASAP. Ok...but also, were my seemingly healthy dogs being given oral exams in the first place? I never dug in to that. We got the oral surgery. This was not cheap. On my second visit ever, i was hugged. When I picked up my dog from surgery, I saw Dr. B in the parking lot and he seemed genuinely confused why i was there, which was alarming. Didn't he just perform surgery on my dog moments before? He also took my child from me at one point without asking. I got multiple personal calls from him checking in on the dogs, and an insisted-upon house visit, because he would be driving by anyway. I chalked all this up to overly caring about the health and wellness of our dogs and being kind of an odd, but well-meaning guy. But then.. 2) I brought one dog in for a suspected UTI (which she has a lengthy history of), they asked to keep her to evaluate the cause of the reoccurring issue (which i already was told by a previous vet was due to tipped vulva). That felt weird, but i agreed. I got a call about 15 min later from Dr. B telling me that worst case scenario it COULD be cancer, and a host of other things - none of which was the UTI. I panicked and agreed to one of the recommended courses of action he laid out for me (one of which could cost $1000+ dollars). In the end, it was a run of the mill UTI. They *claimed* that the original UTI test came back with a false negative. I was handed a ~$700 bill for something I had already diagnosed when i arrived. I've never done this before - but i was so furious, i refused to pay the bill and demanded to talk to Dr. B on the phone (who had conveniently left for the day) and negotiated it down to.. $400. For a UTI. THEN, called me back a couple times that evening and left long confusing messages recommending different long-term treatment options. The one star is for the visit i had with the OTHER vet there, who I had a great experience with. read more

There rates are reasonable, and they truly care about the animals, not their pockets. They won't do unneeded tests, just so they can get paid . They are all about the comfort and care of the animals. Went to him for a bandage change because the dr that had done the surgery was 2 hours away, I was told to keep it. Overhead for two weeks and not let him walk on it aka bend it ... At the apt. He took of the old bandage because he got pee on it told me he didn't need one and forcefully bent it to check on it. When I got home I called place that did the surgery they were not happy says now he needs an X-ray at the end of 2weeks to see if the dr snapped the band in place if he did he will have a law suit ... I also had to go toms different vet to have it wrapped for the rest of the 2 we is because we were only like 4 days in. It ends Monday praying he didn't damage the 2,000. I just spent. read more

Every time I take my dog in for a normal check-up they find "something" wrong that they need to check further and each visit ends up costing me $1,000+, while they then say, "Oh, actually everything is fine". I've been told they need to "re-test" things multiple times to get a more accurate reading and am charged EACH TIME. That is ridiculous. I will definitely not be taking my dog back here. I will not continue to be ripped off while also making my dog suffer through pointless tests that just leave her confused and scared. I recently got my first Bernese puppy and due to my location of being in Peabody, I decided to take him to Borash Vet Clinic. I'm new to this whole owning a puppy thing and want to feel educated and informed when I take my berner to the vet. Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience! First off, the front desk staff is very unwelcoming and far from friendly. When I first visited this office, I did see Dr. Southgate (who was a good vet) hence why I went back for the second time. The second time I went, I was barely greeted, my dog was pulled into the room and I was left in the waiting room. I asked for his weight, never got it. He went for just a distemper shot, came out with a lyme vaccine that I never requested and a sit down with Dr. Borash about how my 3 month old puppy needed an xray for potential hip dysplasia followed by a sedation and surgery but yet NO proof was shown to explain to me WHY he felt this way. Yes, my pup might be a candidate for HD down the road, but to rush into xrays and surgery right away like that? Give me a break. They were so urgent on booking it that the front desk rep said "it would take a a few minutes to get the pricing on this procedure" so I politely asked for a call regarding pricing for this xray that was going to be held on that Wednesday morning (the vet visit was Monday night). I didn't get the call until Tuesday night suggesting I call back to go over pricing for something that was supposed to happen in less than 12 hours. Give.me.a.BREAK. This vet visit and the lack of bedside manner left me balling my eyes out so I urged a second opinion. I am now SO MUCH HAPPIER with a new vet and received the peace of mind I needed. I am so happy I have found a vet that has given me the peace of mind I needed, reminded me that the tiny pain my pup feels could be from the rough play he has had with other pups OR the fall he had from climbing over his puppy gate. She explained how yes down the road to be cautious, all BMDs should get an xray, but 3 months? Just a little too soon. Oh & not to mention my dog was treated for conjunctivitis because Borash vet clinic never picked up on it and told me it was just "allergies" In short, this place is out for your money. I highly suggest if you love your pet, go elsewhere. You will not find bedside manner here, you will just find high prices, no actual relationship with you and your pet but opportunists for any procedure where they can get money from you.Thanks, but no thanks. read more

Only getting two stars (instead of one) because of the great care my Dr Southgate. However while I used to like Dr Borash I find him completely unprofessional. He's incredibly grabby and has poor boundaries with people and always made me very uncomfortable. Once while I was about to back out of my parking space he ran up to the car without me seeing him and yanked open the door to ask me something. Keeping in mind this is incredibly rude and dangerous anyways it really set off my PTSD. In addition he completely missed floating knee caps in both my cats who had been seeing him for years. (dr Southgate caught this in the first two minutes of having an appointment with him). Perhaps it isn't my place to bring it up but He also butchered a routine spay for my friends dog who looked like she had Frankenstein scars plus an infection. Needless to say we switched vets who caught numerous problems that he missed with our animals. Won't be returning and wouldn't recommend unless you ensure that only Dr Southgate sees your pets. read more

Brought my dog there a few years ago. She was old (16) and wasn't eating much and seemed confused. I thought it was her time to cross over the rainbow bridge. Dr. B told me her teeth were bad and that she needed to have many teeth removed and the reason she wasn't eating was because she was in pain. He did some test to check her liver and kidney functions and told me everything looked good. He pushed the surgery and I went along with it. It was very expensive and she really didn't eat much after the surgery either. She declined rapidly and I had her put to sleep 6 weeks later. (Different vet) She was skin and bones. 2nd vet said she was old and and had liver and kidney failure. He was positive that she had this before the unnecessary surgery!!! Sure I'm upset that Dr.B pushed the surgery and the $$$ it cost me, but what concerns me more is that he knowingly prolonged my dog's suffering just to make money off me. I haven't been back since. That experience still bothers me. It was horrible. read more

I have had several VERY positive experiences with Borash Veterinary Clinic. Several years ago when our female Yorkie was sick Dr Hutchins worked hard to diagnose what was wrong, treat accordingly and keep her comfortable. When she did pass the staff was extremely comforting - having us bring our male Yorkie along so that he could have closure as well. Now that our male Yorkie is aged and having some health issues there is no place I would rather go. Dr Southgate came in on his day off to review results of tests with us and come up with a treatment plan. The staff is always friendly and doctors accessible. I would be lost without them. Appts are always on time unless there has been an emergency, the Doctors and staff are friendly, caring and experts in thier fields. Very clean office & exam rooms. The office will take you in anytime in case of emergency. I personally experienced a terrible emergency with my cat this past winter and Dr Southgate opened the office just for me on a Sunday. She had to be put down but he made every effort to avoid it, he was very compassionate. The rates are not outrageous, either. read more

I've been going to Borash for about 15 years with many animals. I've also in that time been to Danvers animal hospital and the ED in Woburn. All turned into around $5k+ and I always ended up at Borash (two were emergencies, and two were big $$$ because they missed something like the burr in my cats throat on Saturday, leading him to pulmonary arrest as I raced to the nearest vet which unfortunately was Danvers Animal Hospital who was nice (but missed something preventable and that I payed for, along with an emergency in Woburn, but cost me THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS.) Had I brought the animals to Borash, which most, if not all the times they were eventually transferred to, they were EXTREMELY WELL TAKEN CARE OF. I understand what people mean when they say the front staff in apathetic, lazy or whatever but come on, I've never had a "well go to another Vet." I'd love for some of these reviewers go to Tuft's Veterinary school, then bitch about wanting to get a mass tested (you could have said no and never known commenter, but because it WAS DONE, you know it is in fact not cancer.) The front staff could be more welcoming and warm, yes but they're also extremely busy. I've only had one interaction with Dr. Southgate, quite a few years ago but he was also great, much like Dr. Borash. Who are these people saying there is poor bedside manner?! Dr. Borash has voluntereed to come to my home because my cat goes psycho (like he's rabid.) They've always let me spend time with my animals when they were gravely ill and we're respectful and nice about it. When my cat was pronounced clinically dead, twice and revived, I was ALWAYS given time and compassion to be with my animal anytime they were there overnight or an extended stay. Go ahead, go to Banfield. You wouldn't think they were so great if you knew what I know has gone on in there, first hand......That's why they're built into the WALMART OF ANIMAL FOOD STORES. Dr. Borash is still on his game, most definitely doesn't need to retire. He's even wiser. He's so nice to the animals, along with the staff, it's like having a friend as a vet, literally. He's one of the most compassionate, competent, qualified and all around caring individuals I know as a veterinarian. I can understand people don't like paying big $$$, but you'd be paying a lot more somewhere else. Never have I had a vet NOT charge me for a follow up visit or give me a discount the way Dr. Borash has and they won't because they don't make them like Dr. Borash anymore. Not only is he smart, but he knows what he's doing and won't BS you. He'll also work with you if it is going to be expensive, but they've ALWAYS told me that up front and if they didn't, I'd be mad at myself for not pushing the issue. What happened to people taking personal responsibility? (I.e.) If you talked to 4 different people trying to get a price (and 3 of those people don't do that, it's your own fault, no the clinic's fault.) I've always gotten follow up calls, calls if something will be more expensive, etc. Do people not understand most vet's are big business now, as is almost as expensive if not just as expensive as going to a human hospital with no insurance. I just can't get over some of the reviews on here. Dr. Borash would rather come to my house than let my cat suffer a scary car ride and some people have the nerve to say he needs to retire?! F them! For 16 years I've been going here, I've NEVER had any of those problems on the negative reviews. I have however worked with the public and some people just aren't wrapped too tight . In summary, I'm so thankful for everything Dr. Borash AND his staff have done for me, while juggling the office, other patients and phone calls. Seriously, step in their shoes for a day. People are so critical. Well I am too and I think after 16 years, I have a unique POV on the review of Borash Veterinary Clinic. If I could, I'd have Oprah put it on her list of favorite things to thank Dr. Borash for always being there, working with me while I was a crying like a girl, had no money, etc. NOBODY ELSE would treat my animal/family as well and he wouldn't steal $6k from me like 2 other vet's in the area that both were liable for those bills for not being comprehensive, rushing, missing, or just not caring but charging me for something that wasn't done making a small problem a huge and expensive one. That's the difference. That's never happened to me at Borash and never would....but if in some universe if it did, he wouldn't act like it was "just what happens" and charge me for it...he'd make it right. 16 years and counting and I'd tell ANYONE to take their animal to Borash Vet, no hesitations.....I just hope he DOESN'T retire, I don't know what I'll do. It's like those good old neighborhood doctors that were before my time, before the big hospitals took over them all. I just hope that's not what happens to Dr. Borash!
