I will not bring my animals anywhere else! I have been going to Baystate Animal Clinic for probably 25 years now. They are so wonderful with my animals. Dr. McNamee is hands-down the best Veterinarian anybody could ever ask for! He actually cares about the well-being your fur-babies (unlike some other vets that I will not name right now) that are more interested in the $$. My little Joey was diagnosed as a diabetic about 6-7 years ago and I was an absolute disaster. I had so many questions. Dr. McNamee talked me through everything and he didn't make me feel stupid like some of the other vets that I have gone to in the past. He would actually call me on his free time to see how Me and Joey were doing. Sadly my Joey passed away 2 years ago. He was 16 but had a very spoiled life - I miss him terrible but it was his time. Now I have three more cats and just recently adopted a senior chocolate lab (she's 12 now and has some medical issues of her own as well - but I will not give up on her.) STAY AWAY! Dr. Hoyt is the most abrasive, heartless not only Dr but woman I have ever come across in my 37 years. It's time for her to retire, her bedside manner is atrocious. Obviously one of the most difficult things to do is put a dog to rest, she is not the person to represent this animal hospital and speak to patients families. He and all of the other wonderful Veterinarians that work at Bay State Animal Clinic have been very honest and upfront with us throughout the years. Over the years as each of my pets have gone through any injuries or just normal aging issues, the Vets have been very upfront with me and have given me the facts and expectations of what options were available. Never once have I been pressured to spend money on a procedure to extend life when quality of life is not going to be improved. Sadly I wouldn't even give them one star but I had to star something before I could write this review. Let me start by saying this, my Boston Terrier Coco was a patient of Baystate Animal Clinic for about four years. Four years ago I took Coco to Baystate because of a growth on his back end. The vet assured me it was nothing to worry about after I begged them (over and over) to remove it. For four years, he told me "it is never going to turn into anything, stop worrying about it"!! Well, mid October-ish, 2014, I came home to an exploded growth and blood everywhere. I brought him back to Baystate... who did a needle biopsy, the biopsy came back cancer; the stage was unknown. They told me he had to have it surgically removed immediately. After an $1100 surgery, I find out it was Grade/Stage III cancer and he could have a chance at a few months even with chemo administered. Great job Baystate!!!! Needless to say I had to put my dog down November 7, 2014, weeks after surgery because he wasn't living his a quality life after surgery anymore (the histamine spread and ruined my dog as fast as I could blink my eyes). He was panting to breath, not playing, and not eating. He was only eight years old and had they removed the mold at four years old when I asked him to, he could've lived a lot longer. I hope you are proud of yourself Baystate, you greatly assisted in the murder of my dog. 14 months later, and I'm still not over the fact that you refuse to do a simple surgical procedure that could've saved my baby. You are terrible people that I'll never, ever forgive. Your staff are horrible people with zero bedside manner. Carry on Baystate. I hope you sleep well at night. There's no friendship like the one I had with my dog; the friendship you took from me. Ree!!!! read more

I brought my 11 year old cat Rascal to Bay State about 3 months ago for not eating or drinking and was vomiting. At that time, after an x-ray and ultrasound they said he was severely constipated so they gave him an enema and an IV along with other meds. He came home only to have to go back because he still wouldn't eat. So another 3 days in the hospital. The total for that was over 3k. Now here it is 3 months later and he is vomiting again and not eating and drinking very little. Again with x-ray and ultrasound, IV and meds. Thankfully no blockage this time. However, his thyroid numbers and calcium levels were off the chart according to them. Of course his thyroid numbers were high, he gets oral medication for it and couldn't keep it down! ! So after 3 days at the hospital I brought him home but not before they took more blood from him to do special blood work which would take 5 to 7 days to get results. Well my cat is still not eating, drinks some water, (a little at time) but the vomiting continues. He is so emaciated now and so thin, don't know how he is still alive. No one from that facility has called to see how he is doing. His regular vet office did call to check in on him. I wish they could have taken care of him, he probably would be better by now. The doctor called to today to say the blood work did not show cancer, but she still couldn't tell me what was wrong with him. My next option would be if I wanted to have him get an MRI to see if there is something in the brain causing the problem. Seriously!!!!! I have no pet insurance and this last visit cost me over 2k. How in the world can these people call themselves doctors when they can't even figure out what's wrong with my animal. I have had him for 11 years. I adopted him from my local shelter. He has been a very healthy cat with no problems. The doctor who called me was quite dismissive of my feelings, and rude, saying to me " let me finish what I was saying " because I had started to ask questions about what she was telling me. Then she had the audacity to tell me about what she did for her cat, including chemo. Well good for her !! I guess she could afford it. Would I take another animal there? ABSOLUTELY NOT !!!!!!!! NOR WILL I EVER RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE. Should you decide to use their services please beware. Best make sure you have pet insurance or win the lottery. I cannot find the words to express my utter disappointment in what should be professional services. How do I know that my cat didn't contract something from the first time he was there. My heart is so broken now because I have to euthanize my baby boy. I don't know how they can sleep at night knowing they contributed to his demise. Nearly five years have passed since my initial review of this establishment. After annual appointments for my dog and cat and my dog getting spayed, I have come to appreciate the veterinarians here a lot. They try to be efficient and caring with each visit, and seem to make a point to find out what's going on in your family's life so they can help your pet adjust or anticipate what your pet may need. As anywhere, their staff can be hit or miss, but every time my family has ever had an issue, everyone was professional and worked to find a good solution to the problem. If not for having moved out of state, we would have continued to frequent Bay State. read more

What a great place. We've been bringing my cat here ever since we got him (12 years ago, he was 7 weeks old). The staff are very friendly and gentle but firm when handling the animals. Though my cat is always nervous to go, when he's there they keep him calm so that they can perform the checkup. Highly recommended. read more

Dr. Emara is FANTASTIC; you can tell he is truly invested in the well-being of the animals. He has recently treated 2 of my cats for infections, and I have never felt more assured that they are in the best of care. I have known about Baystate Animal for 30 years. Having been a client at other facilities I prefer the smaller atmosphere where my cat Ozwald can get one on one attention. If the need arises I can always take him to Wakefield or Bulger or Mass Vet referral in an emergency..but for now we would never dare give up Dr McNamee, Dr Jensen and Dr kay for anything. All are both capable, knowledgable and caring. They give time which is a rare commodity in this day and age. Yes there is bigger, yes ive been to the really big vet up on the hill who gave little time and staff was not greeting me as a client should be,. Walk into Baystate and its like coming home. On Wednesday 9/4/19 my lab Bella had an appointment at Bay State Veterinary To see how she is doing with her auto immune disease. She looked great-she was eating, taking walks at night and just happy so I thought everything was going to be great. When my husband Vic brought her he put me on speakerphone so I could hear what was going on in the room. The assistant weighed her and then said she was bringing her in the back area to take blood sample to check her platelets levels. So I heard her leave and five minutes later the vet comes in with Bella and he asks how she got hurt. I say what are you talking about, my dog is not hurt. He says she has cranial cruciate ligament injury! What the heck is that I'm thinking. He's says that a ligament tore on her knee. I'm like what are you talking about, what's going on-Because I'm on the phone. And my husband and the vet are talking about her limping. Mind you when she left the scale to go in the back she wasn't limping. I saw her that morning while working and she wasn't limping. All of a sudden in five minutes my dog comes back and her ligament is torn? Now my dog is limping around my house. It's breaking my heart! The vet insist she didn't get hurt there. But I say if my dogs leg had been fine how is it now she now needs surgery??? Bay State Veterinary Emergency Services--we were told to go there because my dog had been sick a few weeks prior. The dr who saw her owns the clinic in swansea, ma. I have had animals my whole life. When you bring them to the vet, there is always an assistant in the room when the vet is there. HE brought my dog back in and the assistant never came back in-like he didn't want us asking her questions. HE kept telling us she must have been hurt prior to visit. My dog got very ill on 8/12-was in a different ER for 5 days, left on very strong medications. She hasn't been able to run for over 4 weeks, only walk....there is no way she tore her tendon. My neighbor saw her the morning of the injury and said to me she is so calm...it is impossible for her to do that in 5 minutes. I think the assistant tried to get the blood. Bella probably jerked her leg and the assistant pulled it and tore her tendon. After this issue I read other reviews of dogs being injured there or dying. Don't go there. Shame on them! Admit you did it and fix my dog. read more

I brought my cat to Dr. Dana MacNamee after a very unfortunate set of circumstances...my cat had broken her humerus near her elbow, and when I took her to our regular vet (a GP/ER/Specialty hospital) I was essentially given two options: have the board certified surgeon FIX it with plates and screws (for 5200$) or completely amputate the leg (for 3200$) I was in a panic and reached out to my numerous animal friends on FB and was given Baystate as the place to go to get her fixed (one way or another) for a very reasonable price. Now, I understand the philosophy "you get what you pay for", but this was an extremely reliable friend and I trusted her to the hilt. Well, when I first got there the receptionist greeted me like an old friend, or long time client. She very warmly checked us in, and then we saw the Dr. He said he was pretty sure we could SAVE the leg, AND have it functional. I was blown away. Now, it was still pricey (over 1000$) but it was MUCH better than the estimate that they gave me at my regular vet. My kitty Faith had surgery 3 days later (it was over the weekend that we were seen) and she is doing PHE-NOMINAL. She is full of life, pain free, and even starting to use the leg...even with TWO external fixators. She is adapting extremely well less than a week out from surgery and I am ETERNALLY grateful to this hospital and the entire staff. Dr. M has a great reputation of putting broken pets back together again and for once, ITS NOT ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!! I highly recommend this hospital, and am sure Faith would agree =^..^= read more

Let me start off by saying I am an animal lover and my dog is considered my baby. I am extremely disappointed with baystate and will soon be finding a new vet. I switched over to baystate when my boyfriend had recommended them to me. I had a pleasant enough experience and we decided to stay. Recently my dog got sick he wasn't eating or drinking and was vomiting To be safe I scheduled an appointment to Have him seen. I was upset all day at work while I waited for our 5:30 appointment. I was really worried about my dog. I am a school teacher and I had to stay late and hit traffic on my way home. I called to tell the receptionist I would be late. But she informed me ever so rudely that my appointment had been canceled by my boyfriend (through a miscommunication on my part). However Pattys response was uncalled for and just down right rude. I asked if I could still come in and keep my appointment and she scolded me telling me you'll never make it! She proceeded to FIGHT with me on the phone! I asked her if I could come up anyway and if I made my appointment I made it if not I would go home. She put me on hold and then came back on the phone and told me no. I promptly hung up pissed and still worried about my dog. I have never been treated so poorly. BAYSTATE you have great vets and Tecs but you need a better receptionist she is just bad for business and a bad representative for your company.
