We live in Brooklyn and somehow just made it to Bordertown for the first time. That is a mistake we will not be making again. We are from LA so Mexican food is something we take very seriously. Bordertown passes every test. Everything we ordered and we honestly lost track because we were too busy enjoying ourselves was bold, fresh and exactly right. The fact that this is in our own neighborhood and this good is both exciting and slightly embarrassing that it took us this long. We will absolutely be back and probably soon. I had the opportunity to try Border Town as a pop-up at a Driftaway coffee event with my sister. I remembered at the time, I liked their tacos and that the tortillas were handmade. When they launched their brick and mortar, my husband suggested to go. We went there Sunday early evening with a plan, knowing there was going to be a wait. We asked for a table of 4 and was told 60-90 min wait. We said cool, put our names down, and walked to Mcgolrick part for some playground time. Had fun with some slides and bubbles, and then ambled back to Border Town, within less than an hour. We practically ordered every single taco on the menu, Carne Deshebrada being the most unique and my favorite. The Frijoles y queso was great for my toddler as there is no spice. As for Botanas, we went with Frijoles con Veneno and the Gringa. Both delicious but definitely the Gringa stood out with its mushroom take of the al pastor. There was a bit confusion on our end. We forgot we ordered the frijoles con veneno, and added the Costillas en Salsa Verde. By the time the Frijoles came, we were full! Costillas en Salsa Verde became a to go order and next day lunch. I reheated the tortilla over a frying pan, and tasted almost just as good as if in person. The lightly microwaved pork remained intact and easily pulled apart, perfect along with the rice and refried beans. I do wish there was maybe 2 or more tortillas per dish. when we came in we had An assortment of tacos, a salad, the pork ribs plate, and the guacamole. The pork ribs plate was our favorite. The ribs were cooked very well and paired with the rice beans and signature tortillas. It was a good bite however, I wish it was more flavorful. The talk of the day we had was Carne Asada, which is loaded with meat however I wish there were some veggies or other things added to provide a bitter freshness. The salad we got was very disappointing. We didn't really taste any of the dressing so overall, it just felt kind of flat. And while the tacos were good at this price point, I would've wanted a lot more. They were lacking variety in the flavors and textures. Service is also friendly. Overall, at this price point, I feel like I'd rather go elsewhere, but I am glad I tried them and I feel like they'll only get better from here. read more

I went opening night, excited to try a New Mexican spot. We did have to wait for over an hour but that wasn't surprising given the hype and it being night 1. The host and servers were all super friendly and welcoming. Ambiance wise, very warm and nice sit down tables with a bar as well. The music was very loud, which we didn't enjoy. I did love that they had the Spanish audiobook of Harry Potter playing in the bathroom. The food rundown: - guac + salsa huevona: solid guac. I really loved the kick of the salsa huevona. I wish it came with more crackers given the portion of the guac - ensalada: honestly it was a little bland and awkward to eat because there were full leaves stacked in top of each other. Thankfully we had some guac left which we mixed into the salad. -gringa: this was one of my favorite dishes but I can't get over that it costs $22 for basically a single quesadilla. - frijoles y queso taco: the biggest disappointment due to the tortilla being undercooked/raw-like. I'd rate this place closer to 3.5 but the service is the reason I bumped it up. read more

I finally got to check out the brick and mortar restaurant after seeking out all the pop-ups over the years from chef Jorge Aguilar. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, but very cozy. We had to wait about 2 hours to be seated, but walked around the area until we were told our table was ready. Our server was excellent and super friendly. I really wanted to love all the food we ordered, but unfortunately was not wowed by everything. The guac and chips were very good, as were the tacos (the tacos are really why you should come here and you can see them being made which is cool). We also ordered the gringa, which was different flavor wise but didn't blow us away. I'd definitely come back here for the tacos, but would most likely skip all the other items. read more

We got here at opening and got seated right away. The inside is actually quite spacious, which I really appreciated. The restaurant was quite packed. I also liked that we saw them making the flour tortillas in the back! We tried one of each of their tacos (frijoles y queso, carne con chile, and the special: potatoes and peppers, actually a bit spicy!) Each taco was a bit different so I enjoyed the variety. Don't walk, run. Bordertown is so special. I came here on my birthday taco crawl and have been back 3 times. The beans are amazing, tortilla incredible, I love the big plates, the breakfast burritos, passion fruit cinnamon roll, coffee, everything. I am originally from Arizona and there is still a major shortage in NYC of top tier refried beans and tortillas. Not anymore. We love you Bordertown!! Service top tier! read more

I had heard about Border Town opening through some foodie influencer posts on Instagram and I was immediately drawn in by the beautiful tortillas and cheese pulls. I arrived early, probably too early on a weekday. There were a few strollers, babies and nannies.. so there's definitely more of a relaxed family friendly vibe than a romantic date night. No wait when you arrive close to opening. It starts getting fuller around 6-6:30. It was actually a little chillier inside than outside! AC was pumping so my husband was a little cold but I didn't mind it. It was cool to see how they're constantly rolling tortillas and you can watch them make them. The tortillas truly were the highlight of the meal. They're so perfectly thin that they're actually transparent when you hold them up to the light! Fluffy, light, warm, and perfect for filling. The taco fillings were a little hit or miss for us. Some lacked flavor and really benefitted from (or really required) the hot sauces on the table. The guacamole was delicious though and the big tortilla chips they came with were hot! Service was super friendly and efficient; they even brought us an extra "chip" for our guac which was much appreciated. The costillas en salsa verde was tasty but the rice that came with it was a little too mushy for me. Highlights were certainly the service and the tortillas. I think I'd come back when they start selling the tortillas or maybe when they open up for brunch. read more

WOW. Came with my friend and we split two tacos and Costellas en salsa verde and each got a ancho verde to drink. The food was AMAZING. I cannot think of a single flaw. Not only was the food a highlight but I cannot say enough good things about our server Alana. She was so friendly and made an already delicious meal that much better. I've been very hyped to try this spot (especially because my boyfriend lives on the same block!) but left pretty disappointed. The vegetarian, pescatarian, and vegan options are extremely limited. As a pescatarian, I only had a few choices to pick from - even the bean and cheese taco isn't vegetarian-friendly. The waitress, who was wonderful and also coincidentally a vegetarian, was very helpful in suggesting options, so I luckily was able to eat. It's a bit weird though, they do offer the tortillas to be made vegetarian-friendly but there's nothing vegetarian that can go in them. As time goes on, Greenpoint/nearby neighborhoods have become very plant-based-friendly, so it's a shame that this new place (that apparently once shared they wanted to be "for the neighborhood") doesn't offer more inclusive options. While this spot is new, I really hope they can adjust this. As for ambiance: very cute place but insanely loud. Could barely hear our thoughts and had to keep repeating ourselves so we could have a conversation... read more

Border Town was good!! But that's really all there is to say. It was a good meal, very simple dishes in the best of ways. I'm not sure whether it's a meal worth waiting 2-3 hours for - it's the sort of meal you crave on a Wednesday and want to walk in, sit at the bar, and enjoy. That's a rather subjective opinion but with so many incredible local Mexican spots, I'd recommend waiting for this one to cool down a bit. read more

Tacos were solid. I think a little over hyped but they were good. The actual tortilla itself I think was the star of the show vs the actual filling but for the reviews i thought it would be spectacular. Service was good and we were surprisingly seated very quickly, albeit it was a wednesday night. I traveled from lower manhattan which i wouldn't do again but if you're in the neighborhood or fairly close in BK i'd absolutely swing by. LT #1 will always be my north star for NYC tacos. read more
