I've been at Boss Barbell for 8 years. Boss has all the equipment you need to meet your goals. There's a dedicated powerlifting section with calibrated plates, tons of strongman equipment, Olympic bumper plates, and cardio equipment as well. Dan also adds essential strength equipment like a chest press, a smith machine, new dumbbells, and new benches. All of these weren't available when I first joined. What's best about the gym is that there's typically no wait which is in contrast to 24 hour fitnesses in the area. The morning time has a solid crew, and there are some really strong members in the evening. Dan is obviously one of the GOATs of powerlifting. As such, he has a ton of knowledge on strength training and lifting. If you're serious about your strength goals this is the place for you. Also, if you're new to fitness, Boss would also be a good fit since it's a private gym, and there's a lot you can learn from Dan and the other trainers here. read more

Awesome gym with something for everyone, an emphasis on strength training, and plenty of space. What this gym has is grit and relevancy where it matters by way of the members that comprise a community that's generally welcoming, friendly and tolerant. Though I'm just a hobbyist, of note at Boss Barbell are Dan Green's expertise, a good range of equipment, clean facilities that are well-kept, good hours of operation (with an option for 24/7 that I've opted into), fair pricing with respect to its location, and I've found it to be easy enough to get assistance on the few occasions I've needed 'administrative' help... In many ways, this gym is a second home that's low frills on unimportant optics. Snobby expectations are bound to result in disappointment -- there isn't towel service, a smoothie bar, cucumber water, or artificially friendly folks with name tags at reception that will pander to neediness and sensitivities and ask how your day is. For what it's worth, when I joined just over a year ago, I walked in unannounced at first and not knowing better (in addition to being a hobbyist at best), it was admittedly a little confusing as it felt like walking into a private building. Dan happened to be out front and invited me to explore at my leisure and email for an appointment. I really wanted to like it here. I really did. But on my first day, the vibe I got from the "trainers" just didn't sit well with me. My first experience was upon entering - Sparkle was at the front desk and I introduced myself and told her I was new. She didn't keep her eyes off the computer, said hi and that was about it. So I continued with telling her that I had my gymbag, needed to change, what should I do with my stuff, etc. and again it was a nonchalant you can leave your bag anywhere and just work out. OK... I guess my expectations were a little higher on the customer service front for new members but I get it, there's a newbie and I know some people don't adjust well to newbies... So off to the workout area. After introducing to someone that looked like a trainer (which he was) I asked questions about the programming on the whiteboard - I did crossfit for years so I was expecting the trainer to show me the correct movements -- no, he stood there like I was bothering him and half-assedly showed me the movement. I thought OK maybe he's with a client. But after a few minutes of watching him just STANDING there looking at his phone and not even trying to be helpful, I chalked it up to wow, this place really isn't that welcoming as they claim to be. I left Boss Barbell that night really conflicted - I wanted to focus on powerlifting and this place had so many rave reviews. I ended up not joining. 1I would say the trainers and gym members are extremely nice. Dan has a great personality and I did learn a lot from him. It is extremeley expensive, but he is also one of the best names in powerlifting so obviously it can't be cheap. I am definitely a more experienced and more confident lifter because of his training. A lot of these reviews are negative primarily due to Sparkle, the manager. As the reviews have made clear, she is not nice, which I was OK with. Not everybody needs to be nice. I would have written a 5-star review if it was not for this recent experience ... The way how charging works is you prepay for 15 sessions and then every 2 weeks Sparkle arranges your sessions for the following 2 weeks. My goal was that after my 15 sessions were complete, I would stop training to save up. In mid-June, I receieved an email saying that as of May 1st I have a balance of approx. $1000 in their account. First of all, it's poor timing to send someone an email about their balance in the beggining of May when it's mid-June. More importantly, I quickly did the arithmatic and realized that my balance should be empty. However, Sparkle had me signed me up for 2 more sessions past my prepaid 15 sessions. After sending some emails, I discovered the balance had been emptied. I quickly told Sparkle to cancel the future sessions since I hadn't been informed the balance when I agreed to them. Also, I didn't prepay yet. Sparkle just refused. She said I will owe the gym for these sessions no matter what. Obviously, she just can't simply take money out of my bank account. I have no financial obligation to pay for these sessions. I paid anyway since I thought the final sessions would be of benefit. If I didn't do these precalculations, and she charged me sessions for the rest of the month. I, according to her logic, would owe the gym $700+! The trainers here are definitely amazing and if you are looking for privacy this gym is great as well. However, be wary of Sparkle. read more

You're disgusting behavior and unprofessionalism of not only staring at the floor while a customer is speaking to you, but making fun of my Samoan name. Sparkle has: -interjected in over half of my sessions, giggling it up with the coach, or SloOwly meandered across the grass turf as i am approaching, mid lap-crossing with weights.. enough people do this already. I asked her to text him instead. -Slammed the garage door shut in my face without warning. -@the event-- she circled her mic at me to say "you shouldn't be in here." I was validly waiting for my competitor to be weighed in, sorry you hate your life. I recommend paying a people-person to do your job. No need to stank the place up with that attitude, ma'am! ;) 5-stars for encouragement from 1-on-1 training sessions for the past 6 months. I am a "know-nothing," new to this sport. The trainer will work with you and your schedule adjustments. Other regulars do their own thing, are polite when aware you are in the middle of running sets, and help when asked..it's an easy give and take exchange. read more

A little pricey, but great, no-nonsense powerlifting gym. Pros: - Almost never have to wait for a machine/station- there are so many. - huuuge selection of (shiny new) dumbbells at 2.5lb increments. - no shortage of stations or plates. - competition-rated plates from Rogue/Ivanko(?) at a few stations. - no shortage of bumpers, including some Rogue ones! - plenty of different style barbells. - at least 2 chalk stations. - Great hours, wish they were open a bit later on weekends (: - last I checked, there's free pre-workout when it's stocked up. - plenty of bands, foam rollers, stools, and other misc equipment. - the vibe is great once you get settled. Folks have been nothing but courteous and polite. You'll see a lot of regulars very often- get to know them and say hi! - Almost immaculate bathrooms. This is such a big deal for me. - Dan the owner is very chill and approachable, and offers training sessions at varying price points per amount of pre-booked sessions. Cons: - $103/month is a weeeee bit pricey, but you rarely have to wait for a machine. I consider it paying for convenience. Plus, it's a family owned business in the Silicon Valley, not in Bakersfield. Folks gotta make a living out here. - honestly my biggest gripe is very mild: there are several different brands of regular plates (2.5lb - 45lb), and they are spread across the machines super helter-skelter. A few are cracked or have chunks missing, and across different brands and styles there's some variance between listed weights. I work around this by 1.) finding matching-brand weights or 2.) hitting the competition plates when I can. Not a huge deal. I hope they are one day able to standardize this. - It can be a little hard to reach management- I'd call ahead or email a few days in advance. My onboarding was a little rocky due to how long it took to get ahold of anyone but at the end of the day it was no biggie. - can get a lil smelly, but I mean it's a gym? ‍ Important notes: As far as I can tell, Boss Barbell doesn't really have staff besides Dan and Sparkle, the owners. I'm not saying it's not beginner friendly, but there's no hand holding I guess. You should already know basic gym etiquette, and be able to figure out your own stuff/take care of business- I didn't, but had a friend who was a member and he showed me the ropes. If you need equipment or items, just go look for them. Everyone minds their own business, but again they're all polite and will be helpful if you just ask. When it gets busy it gets really busy- but again, I've rarely had to wait for a machine. They'll often blast music which I don't mind- if this isn't your jam, bring some headphones and do your thing. Finally- A lot of people on Google reviews have a stick up their ass about Sparkle. Sparkle has been nothing short of professional, courteous, and helpful since I got here. Some of y'all need to take a chill pill and learn how to handle very direct customer service. Business owners shouldn't have to kiss ass or accommodate really stupid requests. In conclusion: At its "worst", Boss is like a big, fun, garage gym geared toward powerlifting. At its best it is a rockin place with a great vibe and everything you need to achieve your fitness goals. I have to travel a lot. And if it's somewhere new, I have to go through the rigmarole of 1) finding a gym that is for lifters and 2) that does day and weekly passes. Doing map and Yelp searches, I usually come across two types of gyms: 1. There are tons of CrossFit gyms with all the equipment. Unfortunately, they don't usually do day passes. So those usually don't pan out. 2. Commercial gyms with shoddy equipment and have no interest in selling you a day or weekly pass. So when I touched down in Sunnyvale, I happened to come across the Boss Barbell Club. Not totally out of touch with the sport of Powerlifting, I immediately thought, "That's so cute that their gym is name the same as Dan Green's gym." Uh, that's because it is Dan Green's gym. That might not mean much to most people but to me who likes to pretend that I lift, it's a huge deal. (World Record holder in multiple lifts, no big deal.) But that's not why I would recommend this gym. Simply put, Dan and Sparkle are pretty much the nicest people you'll ever meet. And from what i can see in the morning crew, people who lift at that gym check their egos at the door, and just come in and put in work. And have a good time doing it. Free scoops of BCAAs and preworkout is a super treat. If you love picking up heavy objects and putting them back down, this is the best place to do so. I am so glad to have an office close by so I can come and lift again. (And maybe not fail my Joker set in Deadlifts next time.) read more

This is a long one so bear with me...I was a member of Boss Barbell Club for approx. 1.5 months. I'm going to go over some of the frustrating issues I experienced and why I WILL NOT BE A MEMBER THERE ANYMORE. I recommend arranging some sort of agreement where you can pay for one month without signing up for a membership and trying it out first before committing. The first thing I noticed was their "t-shirt policy." In order to have a membership, you have to sign and agree to not wearing certain brands of shirts. They list several however, it is not limited to what's on the list. I asked specifically, if "Rogue" brand shirts were ok at the outset and the person I was working with said it was fine. My first day in the gym, I was approached by one of the gym managers and they said I couldn't wear that brand. I mentioned I was far from being a sponsored athlete and most of my workout shirts were Rogue. She then said, "Well, if a member complains about it, you won't be able to wear them anymore." They say the reason for the policy is due to "incidents in the past," which I find absolutely bizarre considering I can't fathom a situation where a t-shirt can violently disrupt business operations or culture of the gym. I was actually approached several different times days and weeks after about my t-shirt brand and felt like I was in the movie "Office Space - Did you get the memo on the new cover sheet for the TPS reports?" The whole thing was odd along with the policy. I should preface this with the fact that I've made a very good habit about racking weights and equipment when I'm done using them however, there was a morning where I forgot (this was an isolated incident). The only reason why I remembered was due to a staff member approaching me the very next day and said "I had to rack your weight yesterday, If you don't rack your weight, we will revoke your membership, if 'Sparkle' would have caught you, she probably would have." As someone who has been to a lot of gyms, I can understand why this is frustrating to employees however, for a first time offense the way she approached me was frankly unprofessional and yet again, bizarre. I also recently sustained some injuries and emailed the staff saying that I would like to cancel my membership due 8-10 wks of recovery with virtually no physical activity other than swimming. With their membership, you have to give a 30 days notice so essentially, I'm out $95 and won't be able to use the gym for the month of June. Lastly, the weights are very very old. There some dumbbells/plates with chunks missing from them, many different brands of weight plates, and overall the gym is not in great condition so for the price I'm not sure I will go back. The reason for me joining was because of their unique power/olympic lifting, "globo" gym, and strong man/crossfit type equipment which is awesome however, the more I went the more I realized this place needs some equipment upgrades. read more

I wasn't going to leave a review. Having read some of the others on here I can see that my experience wasn't isolated so I wanted to echo those experiences. I was really excited to visit after emailing the General Manager here, explaining my reasons for dropping in while visiting the Bay Area, etc. The correspondence made mention of how welcoming and helpful their coaches and members are and how I would have a great experience there. Unfortunately from the moment I walked in I felt unwelcome. I was met by the assistant manager and given a 2 minute "tour" of the facility, and then basically left to my own devices. No questions about my goals, how experienced I was or anything else to do with my visit. There were a number of members in the gym at the time, I don't think one of them made eye contact, and most of them went out of their way to avoid doing so. I get it, people like to be in the zone when lifting, and newcomers have to make an effort to get to know people. You can't expect to walk into a private gym and fit right in like you've always belonged. On the other hand, an introduction to one or two people goes a long way to making people feel welcome. I had no idea who, if anyone was an actual coach there, so I had no idea who I would even approach if I wanted a spot, or who to ask about which equipment I could use. I thought that perhaps I got them on a bad day, but I suspect that this is not the case. It's a shame, it seemed to have so much potential as a place to train on my visits to California. Sadly I left disappointed and mildly annoyed at their total lack of interest in having me there. read more

I've been a member of boss for a year and I canceled my membership due to the lack of care from the management especially sparkle. She is rude and disrespect to most. Even when they had interns working for free she casually talked about the negatives of one person during a speech at the end of boss of NorCal 7. She rarely spoke and if she did it was because you did something wrong. As time when on, the gym got more expensive and they lowered their hours. There is a all day option which adds more on top of the 98 per month. It started to feel that they only cared for your money instead of you. All of this was just too much for paying 98 dollars a month. read more

I've never written a negative Yelp review before but my experience with Sparkle at Boss Barbell deserves some comment. Sparkle is Dan Green's wife. For those in a hurry... Don't spend your money with this business. They don't treat their customers well. For those who want more details, you can read them here: In March 2018 I paid for 5 personal training sessions with Dan. My first two sessions went just fine. Dan was great and gave me some tips I could immediately use. As I left I made the third appointment with Malaya. Sparkle took one look at the appointment and cancelled it. "We don't set up any appointments more than a week out." This was never told to me when I signed up. Sparkle is quick to anger and easy to offend. She is very challenging to deal with. Just read some of the other comments in the Yelp reviews that call her out by name. Well, I do make an appointment that Sparkle agrees with but I have to cancel the appointment due to work concerns. I gave her 4 days notice. She charges me the entire training fee. I tell her that if I miss a dentist appointment they only charge $50.00. I asked her is there any period of time when I can make an appointment and cancel it without penalty? No comment from her. Now every time I call to set up an appointment Dan isn't available at that time. That leaves me with two training sessions left. I have to get a cancer surgery and can't lift heavy for 6 months. Then Covid hits. Eighteen months go by. Nobody knows when anybody is open. I dread dealing with Sparkle but I decide to see if I can salvage the remaining training sessions. I have a receipt from them that records my balance forward of $310.00. I contact Sparkle to see if that can be used. I probably would have been fine to reduce it to one training session because of all the events that have happened. Nope. Nothing doing. She says, "that has expired" I say there is nothing on your statement that states an expiration date. You have nothing signed me that says you have informed me of your policy decisions. I have the same address and email that I originally gave you. She seems to make up the rules as she goes. She could care less. She has a grand sense of entitlement. Where else do you expect to get money for doing nothing? Look out! read more

Signed up on with boss barbell. This is a perfect weightlifter/bodybuilding gym. Lots of plates, lots of squat racks, deadlift areas, and other things that are critical to those communities. No matter what your experience level is, BBBC is an incredible place to workout and hangout with all the new friends you'll make there! Boss is like family. When I first came there I didn't really know what I was doing, and I definitely wasn't very strong. Everyone there is so helpful and very respectful, which is important to me as a girl. At normal gyms girls might get bothered by guys who are trying to impress them or correct their form but have no idea what they're doing...at Boss everyone is very experienced if you do want help, and I've always been treated as an equal and a friend. Plus, having Dan there for form correction and help is amazing! He's super nice The facilities are also fantastic! And the equipment is unbeatable. I've been to a few other gyms in the area (normal and powerlifting) and Boss is the nicest by a wide margin. If you want to check it out you definitely need to EMAIL THEM FIRST. I'm an Olympic lifter that just moved to the Bay Area and decided to try out BBBC after a friend recommended it to me. I purchased a one month trial membership, which has just ended. It was a nice experience but I don't plan on coming back. My thoughts: Pros: - more barbells and equipment for olympic and powerlifting than your average neighborhood gym - knowledge and expertise from Dan - plenty of parking - ability to borrow oly shoes, belts, wraps, and other misc. equipment Cons: - very busy at peak hours (around 5 - 8 pm) - unfriendly and unprofessional staff. - expensive (all plans are at least $100 per month) - small, ugly, and dilapidated facility shared with Mountain View Fitness (also owned by Dan) Overall, I think the main draw of BBBC is that it is owned by Dan and the fact that there are few gyms in the area with olypmic/power lifting equipment. If Dan decides to expand the gym and spend a little more money on renovating the gym and training the staff, I think I'd go back in a flash but for now it's just not worth the membership. read more

I was passing through the South Bay on training day and began that task of sifting through gym listings for my Starting Strength workout. I'm a novice so requirements are simple but essential: barbells, weights, a rack, and a shower for after. I called Boss Barbell from the road and one of the owners picked up right away and let me know they have an open gym-walk in pass available. The owners were onsite when I arrived a few hours later (with the most adorable 4 month old twins) and were very friendly and helpful. Check in was easy, bathrooms and showers were clean, and the gym was HUGE with everything lifters require for a solid workout. Everyone there was focused and friendly and I appreciate the no nonsense vibe. Thank you Boss Barbell - I look forward to seeing you next time! I walked out happy because I met my worksets and I pulled more than my body weight off the floor 3x in my deadlifts! read more

I was in town for the night and heard of this place through Instagram. The staff was great. David showed me around the gym and was offering if I wanted any pre workout or post workout. Also, free equipment to use even though I had my own...that was awesome. It's definitely a strength focused gym with a lot of powerlifting equipment so I felt right at home. I was very fortunate to meet Mr. Dan Green two years ago.... But before I talk about Dan on the level, I have to tell you how I even came to know of him. Exactly 8 years ago I injured my back so bad that it put me in bed for 3 months. The Doctors said that surgery was highly recommended. Lifting great weights was always my way to deal with the problems of the world and it was taken from me. On and off I tried to make a come back but I always reinjured my back causing me to be so demoralized that I just became another one of the those guys that got injured during training and was put out to pasture. One day I was on YouTube and I looked up videos on deficit stiff leg deadlifts I was just curious what I didn't realize that this simple action would redirect the course of my life forever!!!!!! In my prime this is what I was known for back when I was at Worlds Gym in Burlingame Ca. These numbers are nowhere near as impressive as Dan's but here here is my top set with deficit stiff leg deadlift negatives was 445 Lbs 4 reps pausing in the hole with the bar touching the top of my feet for a two count. Funny thing is I never got injured doing these, my injury came from a weight much lighter pulled conventional off the floor. So getting back on track I observed an old school clip of this guy doing 585 same style but with little to no effort at all!!! I had to know who this was! After only a little research on the Internet I learned this man was Dan Green one of the best Powerlifters of our time. I had to meet this man and train at his gym. This was the most excited I had been in years! So I called Dan and somehow I got him on his personal line!!!!! This was a trip I got him on his personal line on my very first try!!!! I explained to Dan that I was an old school type lifter that had great gym etiquette...Dan said come on down. So I packed up that night and drove from Jacksonville Oregon to the BBBC in Mountain View Ca. I drove nonstop for 5 1/2 hours so I could get back to the Bay Area. The next morning after only sleeping for two hours I arrived at the BBBC! I met Dan and I was speechless! After only talking with this man for a very short time I came to realize this was one of the most powerful men I had ever met...but I don't just mean his physical strength it was his mental strength that put a lasting impression in my mind since 2 years ago when I had met him Dan was so humble, I've never met a man in my entire lifting career that was this powerful but also incredibly humble... a true sign of a good man's character. But even more impressive than this what I just explained to you about Dan was now dwarfed by the fact that he took 0 credit for his strength in every aspect, he told me that he got his strength by a Higher Authority I knew exactly what Dan meant because I too shared his beliefs once upon a time.....He quickly stated, "I'm not trying to preach I'm just sharing" I can't even began to describe at what level my respect was for this great man now! I told Dan I would pay whatever the cost was to join his gym and also guaranteed him he never would have any problems with me racking my weights or cleaning up after myself when I trained in his temple of strength. Dan and Sparkle accepted me into their gym with open arms... In only under a little less than a month I was pulling deficit stiff leg deadlifts again.... In the mid 300's for reps pausing in the hole!!!!!!! Please keep in mind this was just because of me being around him and his crew there at The BBBC, I never trained with him or his crew but the positive encouragement and support carried me farther than I could've ever imagined!! I was usually leaving the BBBC in the morning as Dan was coming in, I train early to start my day on a positive note. Dan despite his busy schedule always made time to pass down some words of encouragement and tips on training that I could never monetarily be able to make up to him ever basically priceless advice!! If you are looking for a positive place with positive and supportive fellow members you've found it at the BBBC. I will never be able to pay Dan back enough for what he has done for me... He gave me back my life thank you Dan and Sparkle... Dan and Sparkle don't care about membership quotas, They only care about empowering you in your life....good luck trying to find this with another gym. read more

Best gym in America. I came to Santa Clara for a vacation and needed a powerlifting gym to train. I spent a week here and on my first day I was welcomed so wonderfully by the members. All of the members and staff were so supportive and helpful. They cheered me on, were very friendly, and completely non-intimidating. BBBC has amazing hospitality and a very well kept, clean environment. The staff member that dealt with injuries offered to treat me and is helping me locate a place where I live to continue treatment. I am so sad that I had to leave this gym, I have never encountered such supportive and genuinely kind people. I will definitely come back next time I'm in town. read more

Dan is *amazing*. I've been training on and off with various trainers for like 10 years now. I found Dan last July. In six months (1) my nagging shoulder injury was gone (2) My deadlift was up from a number I was ashamed to something around 300+ 1RM. Dan said that by this year, I should hit 400 1RM (which I wont' because of my own fault - I have not been consistent this year with training). I have no doubt that if I had actually done what he suggested I'd have exceeded 400 for sure. And BTW, I'm no spring chicken, I started training with Dan when I was 39. It's not just the strength progression that is impressive - I had all sorts of shoulder problems and Dan knew exactly how to work around all that. He's far and away the best trainer I've seen, and I'm sure he's one of the best trainers in the US (or perhaps the world - he is in fact the powerlifting champion for 110kg class now) if you want to work with weights. More amazing: my wife did not like weight training. I got her to try training with Dan, now she's hooked on deadlifting and she's close to deadlifting her bodyweight in about 5-6 sessions. I think she's well on her way to lifting around twice her bodyweight over the next 4-5 months. Go Dan! read more
