Charged extra for sides, was told I could get 2 sides with my meal. But my receipt reflected a extra 2.50 for each side was (Later told, when I returned) to question the extra charges on my receipt that it depends on what sides you get, when ordering my plate she said what sides did I want nothing about extra charges. Collards Mac and Cheese you will be charged extra, Cashier "said they have been charging extra since the doors have been open". This type of practice is very deceptive, ordered Ribs was told it was a 1/2 rack 1 piece, more like a quarter of a rack for 14.50. I asked if the collards were fresh they tasted like canned. Boss Hogs NEVER disappoints! Deluxe Fried Chicken Dinner was delicious. I eat white meat. That chiClem breast dripped when I took a bite. Okra, Mac-n-cheese, and Collards We're absolutely amazing. Try their Chocolate Cake. It won't disappoint. The workers are ALWAYS sweet and kind. Y'all keep getting better and better! Great job! Came for lunch and was so disappointed. I had the pork with two sides. Nothing was up to temperature from the steam table. My lunch partner never even received her meal. She had asked about her meal twice while I was eating. Apparently there was some confusion regarding the order and was told it would be right up. When I finished, and we were ready to leave, she still hadn't received her food, the cashier refused to give her money back. The day manager said she had to call another manager to get approval to refund because we didn't get the receipt from the cashier when we paid. The cashier even remembered we paid and she even said so. He refused to approve the refund. Don't ever eat here. If they are that desperate for money that they can't refund money for a meal that was never provided to a customer, maybe they need to close the doors. I have NEVER experienced anything like this in my life. Two things I take away from this, always get your receipt even if your eating in and at this place the customer is not their priority. read more

Pulled in on the way to the beach after the wife remembered a coworking use to drive an hour to eat here back in the day. The food looked and tasted good. Unfortunately we had to eat in the car since the Rona was running Rampant across this great land! I had a simple BBQ sandwich so I wouldn't Grease up the rental car. Not thinking, the wife went with a full styrofoam tray of fried chicken, boiled potatoes and cabbage. The cabbage took away that new car smell from the rental unit. We are new to the Washington area and drove up on Boss Hog's and decided to give it a shot. We were pleased with our visit and the staff is super friendly. Just a few cons in my opinion: the AC needs to be replaced (it is definitely too warm in there to enjoy your meal), there needs to be more sides, and the hush puppies we got had no flavor. We really enjoyed the pulled pork and the cole slaw. I asked for the sauce on the side instead of on my sandwich in case I didn't like it. I LOVED it on the sandwich but by itself it tasted like sweet and sour sauce that you would get at a Chinese restaurant. Overall, we would keep coming back and would rather support local businesses over chains even if it does cost more. They ARE open on Sunday even though everywhere their hours are listed online say they are closed. read more

For openers, if you believe the best barbecue is usually found in the worse part of town, in a place with bars on the windows, and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this isn't it. What this is, is a squeaky clean, cutesy place that right away shouts out "Not going to be very good" and if you follow your instincts you'd be wrong and you'd miss some great barbecue. What this is, is Boss Hog's in Washington, North Carolina, stop number four on our almost annual Barbecue Tour. Get in line and tell one of the smiling faces what you hope to enjoy, and then be prepared to be surprised with at least two of the three main offerings and a handful of the sides. For someone who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read 110+ reviews of barbecue joints on Yelp), and if brisket is part of all that, then the brisket we enjoyed at Boss Hog's is right at the top. As good as any of the brisket we enjoyed in our Texas tour where everything barbecue is beef. Sliced to maybe an eighth or quarter of an inch, with a thin layer of flavor packed fat, it was not good brisket, but great. The chopped pork (ask for their homemade red vinegar sauce) was moist and with the flavor of hickory cooked low and slow coming through but not overwhelming.. Our only disappointment were the ribs. Over cooked, likely too long in a too hot warming oven, it was stew meat on a bone. The Brown Shoe Gourmet was, however, confused, however, by the sauces. The one they give you in little plastic cups reminded us of the sweet sauce you put on egg rolls at Chinese restaurants. Forget about that and make sure you ask for the red vinegar sauce for the pork and a thicker molasses based sauce (if you're so inclined) for the brisket that really doesn't need it. The sides? Some really good ones. The Brunswick Stew has large chunks of meat in a crowded cup of good taste. The corn niblets were fresh and sweet; they offer slices of apple in a nice thick, sweet sauce which were also good and the top hog's finely chopped slaw is better than the Colonel's back when KFC slaw was still really good. The bottom line to all this is that you can't always tell where you're going to find good barbecue... this place looked to be just another brightly lit little store trying to cash in on barbecue's popularity. What it turned out to be, was home to some great 'cue (the brisket and pork), sides that were exceptional and a squeaky clean place with a great history of family ownership, some 18 years of it, with Kim Stowe now in charge with son Holden doing a good job of welcoming folks, answering questions and sharing the history when Kim's not around. Four stars to the surprise we stumbled across in Greenville on our barbecue tour of the Carolinas. Five when you get the ribs up to the level of the brisket and do something about the sugar sweet Chinese dipping sauce. read more

Ate lunch here on Friday (8/20/21) on the way into town. This is primarily a buffet place. Cattle chute line to order looking into a water pan filled glass case. If you know and love what traditional eastern NC bbq is, then don't eat here. The pork they had was a minced - mush product that was flavored with liquid smoke and swimming in grease....can you say "where's the antacid? I got a combo plate with grilled chicken, the dark meat chicken had a crunchy skin and was flavorful. Was the best part of the plate. The hush puppies were heavy, but hot ones had just been dumped onto the serving line, so there was that. The side of boiled potatoes seemed canned. Didn't eat but a bite of the coleslaw, because as I was taking that bite a big cockroach came scampering out from under an adjacent table. Looking around the sparse, tight dining room, the tables were nasty, greasy looking. Used paper products littered the floor. Salt and pepper shakers were dirty and sticky. After seeing the roach, I got up and threw everything in the garbage can on the way out the door. I won't go back, and would tell other folks to avoid the place at all costs. Stumbled on the place when driving 64 and boy, am I ever glad. We stopped a local on the way in, and asked what to order. We ordered the grilled dark meat chicken which was a little sweet and had a tiny, tiny bit of heat. The two sides we picked were boiled potatoes in butter and collard greens. The boiled potatoes were the nearest thing to my southern grandma's as I could get. Made me want to fry in delight. The collards were rich with Smoke flavor and cooked just right. They fade us hush puppies with our meal and we had sweet tea that was near perfection. I went up and thanked them for my meal and explained that I was on vacation with my mom who I didn't get to see as much as I wanted. This stop was on our way home from Emerald Island. So glad we stopped, the people are fabulous and super friendly. Hubby and I both had the bbq plate with collards, coleslaw, potato salad & hush puppies--all delicious. The bbq was traditional NC vinegar base add some Texas Pete and it was perfect. Yummy! Seasoned to perfection. Friendly staff, full of locals. We were passing through from Virginia Beach to Fayetteville NC (for three years now) and noticed the parking lot is always full. Glad we finally stopped. Ate the specials- granny's fried pork chops, with yams and brunswick stew for $8.99 including a drink, great price for the generous portions. I travel all over this country for work. I've literally have eaten in thousands of restaurants throughout this great country. I can honestly say I have never, in my 55 years, been talked to from an employee of any restaurant like I just did at your Washington, North Carolina location. I am glad to know your business is doing so well that your employees can rudely speak to customers therefore losing a few customers. As the older female just told me, "I can tell you some of the sides but not all of them, there's way too many and we are just too busy for that." I brought my small company of 25 employees up here for three months to do a job and Aurora North Carolina. I guess I should be happy that your employee just made our decision on where we shall eat every night a little easier by taking yiur restaurant off our list. Because after the way we were spoke to on the phone I can 100% guarantee that we will never step foot in this place. I heard the food was pretty good but I will never be able to verify that. Bad experience from ordering to pick up. Called in order to pick up at window. Took 9 calls to get through. 7 of them the line was busy. The 8th the call and answered then hung up. The 9th a young lady answered and asked the name for the order and then told me to hold It sounded like she was banging the receiver on something for a very long time. She came back on the line and I gave my which was the BBQ sandwich special. I said I wanted Pepsi to drink and she said I could not have that. Tea came with the special and there was no substitutions. I explained I always got Pepsi and she said not any more you won't. We have a new owner and you only get tea and hung up. I did not know if I actually had a order to pick up or not. My husband went to the drive up window. He said there were three ladies that worked there standing in the window talking and laughing. They kept looking over at him but ignored him for a very long time. We and other Caucasians feel discriminated against at this restaurant. read more

We visited the cape lookout last weekend and on our way back home my husband was craving BBQ. We decided to stop at Boos Hog's because to try it out. I live in the area and first ate at Boss Hog's shortly after the Captain D's closed and this place opened in the same location. I have been two or three times in total. The last time I visited was three weeks ago. There was noticeably less food than before and the prices are higher. Too high for the quality and quantity in my opinion. I've eaten a lot of Eastern NC BBQ. For those unfamiliar with the style it is always pork and the sauce is a spiced vinegar. If I had to choose one word to describe Boss Hog's, the word would be forgettable. In an area surrounded by great ENC BBQ places, this one doesn't hold its own. I'd like to have given at least three stars. Maybe I could have if I never ate Eastern NC barbecue anywhere else, but I have. Boss Hog's is the McDonald's of barbecue joints. You could eat it but It is simply nothing special in any way that I can see. If you have the time you can drive 45 min. to Ayden NC to the Skyline Inn for an award winning BBQ meal. The out-of-state reviews seem to like this barbeque. For a local in eastern NC, where we know good barbeque, I simply cannot agree. To me, it tastes like it came from a plastic tub in the processed meat section at Food Lion. Mealy, oily, too sweet for our style of que. The second star, though, if for the veggies. They are prepared country style - with lotsa grease. The collards and green beans have a nice shine to them so you know they are well-seasoned. So, next time I'm in there, I will be hitting the vegetable plate. I'll get just as much grease as the barbeque plate, but they will slide down nicely! read more

I come to the Washington area often for work and have driven by this place a few times, the parking lot is always packed. That is normally a good sign. I finally stopped in, and I'm I glad I did. Will definitely be coming back. I got the Boss Hog Trio plate, ribs, NC BBQ, and your choice of chicken....grilled,fried,or BBQ. Lots of sides to choice from. The homemade Mac & cheese was great. We stumbled across this place and stopped by because it looked like a pretty busy place so we figured it was probably good food. The staff was extremely friendly... prices were fair... food.. eh.. My husband ordered a BBQ sandwich but it was only pork.. no BBQ sauce at all. I ordered the white meat grilled chicken. It was fair but a little dry. The sweet potatoes, however were delicious and they offer a good variety of sides as well. While we would not likely choose this place again if we were in the area, it seemed popular with the locals. read more

If you are a diabetic I would recommend staying away from this place. They add to much sugar to foods that do not even need sweetener.
