Like Peak, TrainStation is a trainers gym and you need a personal trainer to work out here. I work out with George, who is extremely attentive and conscientious about form, strength training and my personal progression. I have had two major operations recently and George has been a big part of my recovery. In addition to typical strength training with weights, George mixes up my routine with high intensity work with sleds, battle ropes, Rhino pulls, assault bike, etc. The other staff and trainers at this gym are all Pros. Sam is the owner and head trainer and you can tell he has a great relationship with everyone in the place. The vibe in the gym is serious, but friendly - people are there to get their work in! Finally, the gym itself is really clean. The floors and machines are constantly wiped down and there's good natural light. The gym has also has four private showers, so you don't have to dress in an open locker room and even when it's crowded, you don't have to wait long to get on your way.

I mainly focus on mid-weight lifting and stretching, not a big cardio head. Having an open studio space is a plus too. Mid-city fulfills most of these criteria. The gym is location at a great location, albeit a bit busy due to tourists. The underground and dark nature will be a pro or con depending on the person; I find it nice as it mentally isolates one into the "gym mindset" without external distractions. Plenty of squat, deadlift, and bench press spots, and the typical strength training machines that other NYSC/Crunch gyms would have. NO studio space with is a downside for me, but otherwise is perfect for the price. They run constant promotions so don't be afraid to ask or go on instagram! Can get busy post work hours (5-7pm) as any NYC gym would. Great plus is that they are open quite late on weekdays.

I just moved into a building with a BellaVita-operated gym. The gym is only open for advance…read moresign-up in one-hour increments, with the last one each day starting at 5:30 pm. They claim this is for Covid protocols, but every other building in Manhattan has more normal and extensive operating hours in their gyms. I guess BellaVita feels cramming people into the gym during the work day somehow protects them from disease. If I do sign up in advance for a session at the gym during work hours, I get a message with 2 forms to fill out - the basic Covid form that's required once and I've already filled out and submitted twice, and an additional Covid form that must be filled out 24 hours prior to every gym visit. (I'm not clear on what problem would be caused by accepting a form filled out less than 24 hours in advance.) The reminder message from BellaVita clearly states that these forms are for the date and time of your previous gym visit. For instance, if you had been scheduled for a 5:30 gym visit on Monday, April 12, and have another visit upcoming on Thursday, April 15, your reminder that arrives on April 14 (a few hours before it's due) will state that it must be completed 24 hours in advance of your gym visit on April 12. Since that visit is past and the deadline therefore irrelevant, you might just ignore it and get back to work - thus ensuring that BellaVita cancels your April 15 visit.

By then, I had spent enough time in training spaces to recognize the difference between a stylish room and a genuinely well-run gym. The Great Jones Street location was exceptional, the space was immaculate, and the soundtrack was always on point. Its equipment was thoughtfully chosen, providing serious trainers with everything they needed in a compact, highly functional room. Clive was the main reason the gym became so meaningful to me. He was my personal trainer, one of my closest friends, and someone who could make a demanding session feel like the best part of the day. Rob and Steve (the owners of GJF) brought the same depth of experience, along with the authority that comes from decades spent shaping the neighborhood's fitness culture. The 3 of them were downtown fitness royalty in the most credible sense: deeply knowledgeable, widely respected, and still completely cool and approachable. Looking back, I feel as though we carried that chapter of New York life almost to its final moment before COVID changed the city. Great Jones Fitness holds memories of hard training, close friendship, and a version of downtown life that now feels especially vivid. I can still picture the music playing, Clive putting me through a workout, and Lafayette St post-workout, on our way to get a smoothie at Juice Generation. This private training studio in the East Village (Owners Rob Morea and Steve Lischin don't believe…read morein "NoHo") is a top-notch and well-planned place with amazingly personal attention. Both Rob and Steve know their stuff - they aren't "failed" athletes who thought it would be cool to be lifelong gym rats; these are people who are committed to being on top of what's happening in the fitness world, and sharing that with you. I've just started seeing Steve (he and Rob train here primarily, with occasional visiting trainers), and find the sessions to be great challenges, incredibly motivating, and kicking my sorry ass. Whether its TRX, kettlebells, biking, cross-fit craziness, or a million other techniques, Rob and Steve are going to work with you to learn about what you want to achieve, and then set out to help you achieve it. And gleefully help you suffer along the way. In other words, be prepared to work - and work hard. Sessions run more than what you pay with a training program at NYSC or other larger-scale membership gyms, but they're worth every penny, in my opinion, and my body seems to think so, too.
