Small but clean studio located in the city. Had a 20-minute phone consultation with Westley on pricing, assessments, and fitness goals. The transaction went smoothly and then he had me fill out a 2-part questionnaire and then sign my name. The assessment was $99 including a 1-minute tour of the studio, 40min talk therapy, 2 mins body scale/measurements, then a 10mins mini workout on an air bike, planks, squats, and stretching. My trainer was Brian, and he was great to work with but I felt some of the questions he was asking me about my goals were a repeat of what I have already filled out in the questionnaire. There were some questions that was slightly different but they seemed redundant. If I knew the assessment involved 40-minutes talk therapy I wouldn't have signed up! I have never heard of a place where they charge you for a trial. But I have also checked out other studio places where they don't even offer any trials and expect you to buy their package and pay upfront. No thanks. On a final note, even though it was a 10min mini workout, I actually left feeling sore (for sure!) for three days. So I give it 4 stars for a pretty good workout (or the soreness came from being out of shape for so long and leading a sedentary lifestyle) I would not have gotten if I went to a gym and did cardio. This place is expensive. Like two arms and a half a leg with some toes. Sadly this place wasn't for me, location and cost but maybe it is for you! Paul and Brian were excellent and extremely knowledgeable. If you're worried about going to the gym during covid- they're extremely clean. I've been going to UpFit since the beginning of 2022 and it's been an amazing journey. Originally I was introduced to Upfit to get ready for my wedding. But my experience with the team was so positive that I decided to continue going 2 times a week after my big occasion. UpFit is unique in that it is community oriented. All the trainers know your name and truly care about your well being. The exercises are intentional and the coaches try their best to help you meet your goals. Their nutritional advice was also extremely helpful when it came to figuring out a healthy lifestyle. I just tried kickboxing with Wes for the first time today and it was fantastic and most importantly so fun. UpFit is the most unique small training gym that I've ever been to. Hurting from other group classes or tired of running on the treadmill? Look no further. It's always so impressive to get so much out of a focused one hour class instead of jogging for hours in the past. Wes is one of two UpFit Training Academy founders. I've known Wes for almost 9 years now - he is the best trainer I know. If you are serious about your fitness goals, he is someone who will take you seriously too. How do I start...I've been wanting to write a review for months but didn't want to rush it because I had to do this one right. I met Wes when he was the head trainer at Crunch. I was in my late 20s, fit, attended classes regularly, was part of my highschool swim team, college diving team, danced competitively, didn't have any weight loss goals and certainly did not think I needed a trainer. Long story short, I was convinced to try personal training and met Wes. I was reluctant and skeptical. I ask a lot of questions and am quick to sense hesitation and lack of knowledge. I am one of those people! (This is how I ended up with Wes/HEAD trainer at Crunch and not the first trainer who I was assigned to, who failed my unintentional screening.) Meeting Wes changed my life. I was also one of those misinformed people, who didn't want to gain muscle because it would make me look "big" - in fact I got smaller and stronger. Who thought I would never in my lifetime do toe pushups - my second session with him I did 5. Who thought sugar was better than fat - I was so wrong. Everything up to now seemed to work fine for me, so why change. (I was 110lbs and 5'3''.) I had 10 sessions with him, once a week, used weights, and for the first time had a hint of abs where I never thought I would see them. Getting abs wasn't even a goal. I just wanted to be a better version of myself and I was in the best shape of my life! We've remained friends since. Not only was he a stellar trainer, keeping it creative and tailored to my needs, but I found he was a genuine individual; a truly caring and concerned listener. Positive and optimistic. Knowledgeable too (check out his qualifications!). Compassionate as well. I could tell he loves what he does, understands the body, and gave a killer stretch session after each workout. I've referred my cousins and close friends. Wes really sets the standard high for all other trainers after him - I have since left the U.S. but always make sure to pay him a visit each time I'm back. If Upfit is a translation of Wes' vision, you can't go wrong sticking with his program. I'm not saying it's all easy, in fact it's the hardest I had worked, but so it should be. I have since left regular "just for fun" gym classes (not saying they're bad), but go to HIIT classes and aim for strength building. I like to see results. Over the last decade I have watched him set goals for his own life and every step of the way he has reached them. It is amazing and inspiring. I am so excited that he now has Upfit. I am a fan from half way around the world! P.S. I also coach gym classes now, part time. I truly love this gym. I joined back in July and have truly enjoyed every minute. Each coach has their own style but they are all very knowledgeable and care about your continual improvement and form. The coaches create workout plans for you and follow up with you to see how you're progressing etc. additionally, they offer strategy calls where you can discuss your goals and how to achieve them. This gym is a little family - you start getting to know your classmates and the coaches and connect with them on a different level. The other members are incredibly supportive and encouraging. I cannot say how many times I was ready to give up on a set and I hear someone yell out that I got this and am doing great. That support is hard to come by. Also, the owners and staff strive to make it feel like a community - they get to know the members and create opportunities for members to get together and spend time with one another. We just had a holiday party which was super fun. They even gave out awards! It was an incredibly awesome way to round out the year. I've been gaining weight and dieting repeatedly all my life, and always struggled to keep working out regularly because I had poor forms and couldn't lift heavy weights without injuring myself. I decided it was time to get some professional help, and it has been a life changing experience training here with Wes, Paul, Regina and Brian for the past 3 months. I've already lost 2.5 inches off my waist and have gotten much stronger on all of my lifts. I plan to keep training with them for as long as I live in NYC. They individualize your training sessions according to your goals, and adjust them as you progress. TBH, the first 1-2 months were extremely brutal because I was so out of shape after a year of staying home due to the pandemic, but now my mental & physical toughness have improved so much that I somehow wake up at 5:30AM to go train with these guys at 6 AM 3 times a week and feel super energized afterwards (I've never considered myself a morning person before). They will keep increasing your workout intensity to make sure you continue improving, which means workouts will never get easy. But they push & support you the right way and you can get so much out of this place as long as you put in the work and keep communicating with them in terms of what you are working towards, what you are struggling with, etc. Small group dynamic is also nice b/c sometimes just having other people around you who are also pushing hard is enough to get you over the especially difficult sets. read more

I started training with Wes a liitle bit more than a year ago and I must say that I am totally different person from then - in a good way of course :). In the past I had been exercising by myself (taking classes, jogging, etc) but have never results like this! I started weightlifting and he guided me through the process - he paid attention to every movement making sure I had the correct form so I didn't injure myself, after that increasing the weight or repetitions. Wes is one of the most knowledgeable and creative trainers with whom I have ever worked. As someone currently working in the Health Profession, I have met many trainers who can craft a good workout but lack a thorough understanding of body bio mechanics and what to do if your client has anatomical restrictions. Wes noticed my ROM issues right away and had no problem working with them. Wes' varied fitness background means that he has worked with all fitness levels and abilities. For example, I'm currently working to gain strength and am only able to train at a time when he has other clients present, clients who are significantly better conditioned than me. This would be a train wreck for a more novice trainer, but Wes is a pro and arranges the session so everyone reaches their peak training range. I don't know how he makes it work so smoothly, and I don't need to know. It's magic and it's working! read more

Paul and Westley are really dedicated trainers and really care about catering a specific program for each client so even though they're small group classes it basically feels like a personal training session. The instructors here are so knowledgeable, they can spot these minute, almost invisible details in your form, and give you tips on doing it more efficiently. I was blown away when I was told to bridge differently by activating certain muscles, and I was able to feel the increase in power immediately. The instructors are very mindful of all the members forms during each movement, and that is super helpful. Each workout is tailored specifically to the member! And they keep track of your progress so you know you are always improving. The facility is always spotless and well organized, and it's located near penn station which is very convenient for commuters. All the members I have met have been very welcoming and encouraging. Overall it's a great place to train, I can think of literally no reason to not come here and work your butt off! read more

Paul park was my personal trainer from 2009, I've been hooked on exercising and weight lifting ever since. He is extremely knowledgeable about weight lifting, dieting and overall health. I first met Wes in the gym, seeing him train other people. At the time, I was just running, never lifting weights and knew nothing about working out in general. About 9 months into training with Upfit, I can truly see what makes Wes and Paul's product so much different. Having worked with personal trainers before, I was expecting a similiar experience, with some gains up front, going through the motions with my usual excercises, avoiding weaker areas of my body and generally treating the gym as a chore. But from Day 1 with Upfit, it was clear Wes and Paul had a better plan. Like many guys in their mid 30s, who spend the day cramped over a desk and computer, I struggled with posture, leg and hip strength and flexibility, and tightness in my hamstrings and back.
