The web site is easy to use and ordering is easy. What prompted me to write this review is the excellent customer service I received. We had a mix up with the shipping, due to the shipper, not their fault. I was very impressed when I called on the weekend and a real person answered the phone. The promised they would document my situation and someone from corporate would get back with my Monday morning. Sure enough, Monday morning I received an email from someone in corporate. This place takes the cake!! Their cinnamon swirl walnut coffee cake is really good! Nice dense texture, buttery flavor, lots of crumbly topping, albeit a tad dry... it's yummy with a cup of coffee or tea! We received ours as a gift, and it came well packaged in a study box, in another sturdy box, and then in a tin. I recommend ordering the cake in the tin, as it helps the cake stay fresh and in tact during the shipping process. It's a couple more dollars, but worth every bite! This company offers other flavors (lemon, caramel apple, cranberry orange, blueberry, chocolate, & ginger spice to name a few) and desserts, such as mini Bundt cakes, Whoopie pies, brownies and cookies. They make a lovely edible gift, and are priced similar to one of their competitors "My Grandma's of New England". Personally, I prefer Grandma's cakes, their cakes have a richer, better flavor & have more nuts & cinnamon; and now they are available in my town so no more traveling to New England to purchase them!! However, these Boston Coffee cakes are good too and if you're a lover of sweets, you won't be disappointed. So pour of cup of joe, grab your newspaper (do people read those anymore?) and cut yourself a big slice of cinnamon cake and enjoy savoring the moment!! We received a walnut cinnamon coffee cake as a holiday gift. There was an issue with the shrink wrap and it was very dry when it arrived. I sent an email to customerservice@bostoncoffeecake.com 5 days ago. Crickets have been chirping far too long without a response, so I have decided to notify the sender (who sends us one every year, as well as to all of their business clients) to let them know how dissatisfied we were. I will ask that they not send us anything from this company in the future, and if we ever do receive another order, I will refuse it! Issues happen with mass quantity production, but refusal to respond to a complaint is unacceptable! read more

Customer service is abysmal. Hold times are extensive. Getting a representative that can help you is another story. We ordered several coffee cakes for family preceding the Christmas holidays. The ones ordered with regular shipping made it to the destination ok. They send a shipping notification for the other cakes but never included a tracking number. After calling numerous times - they finally shipped a cake after the conclusion of the holidays since the lower level agents couldn't contact management. I wouldn't recommend you spend your hard earned money at this company. Their cakes may be ok but their customer service is dismal. read more

BOSTON COFFEE CAKES SUCK! I'm giving Boston Coffee Cakes one star only because I have too. The cakes do not warrant the star. I too have listened to Gene Burns peddle these cakes for years, and, for years, I have said to myself, "self, you need to order one of these coffee cakes." This year, I finally ordered three. Simply put, there is no way in hell that a true foodie like Gene Burns would ever eat one of these cakes, much less honestly claim that they are delicious. Boston Coffee Cakes are barely more palatable than the Hostess coffee cakes you can pick up at the AM/PM mini mart (next to the smokeless tobacco and the condoms), but they are a lot more expensive, especially when you factor in the $26.00 two-day shipping charge!! Yes, that's right, we paid nearly thirty bucks to ship Hostess coffee cakes across the country. The smokeless tobacco would have been a tastier choice. I ordered the walnut cake - the cake Burns claims is as good as the one his mom used to bake. Frankly, If I were Mrs. Burns, I would bitch slap him for insulting me like that. And, P.S., I doubt that Mama Burns used artificial coloring, soybean oil, or GASP, SHUDDER, BARF -- PROPYLENE GLYCOL -- an ingredient used to make antifreeze and one I refuse to allow in the cosmetics I buy, much less in the food I eat-- to make her coffee cakes. Similarly, I do not believe that "Nana Cluck," the person who, is credited with developing the original coffee cake recipe, spiked her cakes with antifreeze. Can you say "total bullshit?" Sure you can. Notably, I could not find a "satisfaction" policy on the BCC website. Hmmmmmm. Could it be that, if they actually guaranteed satisfaction they would go belly up? Gene Burns just lost all credibility with me. Take my word for it -- buy the Entenmanns coffee cake and save yourself a bundle. Poor business practices and customer service. Accidentally placed two orders back to back due to never receiving my first email confirmation. Even though both orders were merely hours apart no one at Boston Coffee Cake thought it odd I was sending two separate packages of the same cake to the same place with the same gift message on each. Not to mention why not combine the two packages into one shipment. I guess it's all done by robots who can't stop to think something may need correcting or could be done better. When I asked customer service what could be done I received a rude and defensive email simply stating no they wouldn't refund one of the cakes nor did they make any kind of offer of a discount on future orders to makeup for it. Well there definitely won't be any future orders now. Basically, the cakes aren't worth the rudeness. read more

These coffee cakes are WAY overrated! I ordered the cranberry walnut as a gift for my parents, and it completely crumbled apart - while the crumbs themselves were tasty, we could not get a SINGLE slice out of the cake that did not completely fall apart - very disappointing, especially because it cost a lot to ship it out to San Diego. Also, when I left this same review online at Boston Coffee Cake's website, they never posted it - I checked back a few weeks later to see if my comments made it to the site but they are not there - clearly they only post the five start reviews. At the same time that I ordered the cranberry walnut cake for my parents, I also ordered the caramel apple coffee cake for my brother and his family. BCC actually sent us the apple-licious coffee cake instead, and I could definitely taste a strong flavor of coconut oil throughout each bite. Like the other reviewer, I am disappointed by the chemicals that are noticeably used in these coffee cakes. They do not taste homemade at all - they taste mass-produced. And when you end up paying about $40 for a coffee cake by the time the shipping is added, you do want it to taste homemade. So I'm 0 for 2 with my first Boston Coffee Cake experience, definitely making it my last Boston Coffee Cake experience. read more

I purchased a coffee cake for my self after sending several as gifts and enjoying some myself that I was able to purchase at BigY. I loved the flavor of the cake but it was a bit crumbly. I was asked by the company to write a review which they posted on their site. In my review I mentioned the issue with texture. As someone who has owned a small business, I want accurate feedback so that is what they got. I had completely put the episode behind with every intention of sending more of them as gifts when today UPS delivered a 3lb Cinnamon Walnut Coffee Cake with a note apologizing for the first cake. WOW! That was impressive. If we as consumers got this kind of service all the time we would be all set. By the way, this cake is fantastic. Moist, great cinnamon flavor and crunchy walnuts. This cake does deserve 5 stars. Yes Nana Cluck did create the original cake with the ingredients in the original cake. The ingredients that are listed by someone who does not know what he is talking about are preservatives and can be found in everything other than organics. Your taste buds may be off a bit, because not one person hates this cake. This cake is all about family and goodness, it is a family owned business and is nothing but kind. In the winter months the owner opens his factory for walk-ins those walk-ins profits are all donated to charity's such as Harbor Schools and Women's Shelters. Can you get this through Hostess Coffee Cake, No I think not. My favorite cake is Golden Pumpkin. Their cakes are so moist I cant find that in any other store bought cake. There is nothing wrong with the yummy goodness of a Original Boston Coffee Cake. I am glad that Boston Coffee Cake has made its way to California and even that Gene Burns is talking about it. Not only is there cake talked about everywhere but restaurants are buying their lava cakes and using them as their deserts, even McDonald's wants to sell them, for a "bullshit cake" I don't think it would get as much business as it does. read more

Propylene Glycol is an organic compound and to say that it's inclusion in a food is akin to ingesting antifreeze is no different than saying that because salt is an ingredient in hydrochloric acid that therefore, if you eat a food with salt it's the same as ingesting hydrochloric acid. I've had the coffee cake and enjoyed it. d.m. should take a look at the hundreds of chemicals that are in an orange or any other food he/she eats every days. They all have scary names. Boston Coffee Cakes are the best!!! I just have to tell you a story about the Boston Coffee Cake Company. I ordered 9 cakes from them a few days ago for Christmas. I received what I thought was a mass email from Mark Forman, the founder of Boston Coffee Cakes. He said there was apparently a problem with the shipping date. I called this morning and was told by an operator that everything was fine ... then got another call three hours later saying the order was on hold for an unknown reason. I emailed Mark back and said there was a problem. And ... 10 minutes later ... I actually got a call from Mark Forman ... the founder of Boston Coffee Cakes!!!! He assured me personally that the order would be executed to my specifications, and promised that there would be no glitches in the future! When was the last time you got customer service like that? Not only are the cakes absolutely delicious (I've been buying them for years as presents and they are a hit). But to get a call at 9:37 p.m. from the founder of a company is unheard of.
