I was recommended this "pain clinic" by a doctor. I called them twice, but it took them two months to get back to me. When I finally heard back, the person who answered was gruff. She barely let me say my name, when she demanded to know why I wanted to see them. She let me know, they no longer are a "full service" pain clinic. They do not do anything but injections. When I tried to inquire more, she already decided I was not a correct fit and told me to look elsewhere. I tried to even ask where they'd recommend I look. (Surely before they stopped all their treatment plans, they sent their patients somewhere?) Nope, nothing. Then hung up. So unless you just need a steroid injection and willing to wait a long time, check out somewhere else. read more

This review is for their services experienced right before Covid-19 and at that time I didn't care about sharing because no one was able to see them for a long time anyway. Summary: If you are looking for pain meds, expect to be considered a drug addit and be prepared to jump through hoops. If you need just injections, there are numerous other places. A senior male with vetted and documents chronic lower back pain (stenosis) and have tried all over the counter meds, injections, acupuncture, chiropractors, PT, Pot etc., and have used numerous pain management practices over the years. My goal here was to try another round of injections and if that failed get back my pain meds so at least I can work . I found these people to be aggravating. I experienced problems with their appointments scheduling and long wait times for many appointments. I had one set of back injections (pay to play) which didn't work. By the way, watch out for the $250.00 co-payment, I had Blue Cross. They perform the injections supposedly at a different location for insurance purposes but it's actually it's done in the same building down the hall. My other pain managements only charged me $30.00. To receive any type of pain meds you have to go through this circus of interviews. Doctor, Chiropractor, 2 LPN's, 2 urine tests and a phycologist. I was rejected by the phycologist for pain meds. My mistake was being too honest (tip: don't divulge anything you don't have to). This phycologist seemed to me a young millennial fresh out of graduate school with zero life experience. Asked if opioids actually worked for pain, I told him yes then followed up with a true story where my wife had literally ruptured a disc in her back and had received only ibuprofen from her surgeon for relief (Dr.s are scared to prescribe opioids nowadays). That night while she was crying in pain begged me to find her something for relief. Well, I did. I found her a 10 mg oxycodone . Big mistake on my part for telling him this story. I am a senior; I've been off and on opioids for years. I take it so I can work (out of my home), and I take it because I'm a care giver to my wife. It's too bad that the people who really need pain meds can't get them. Even worse, is having someone from the "entitlement generation" ruin your quality of life. I have had a mystery pain in my shoulder for over two years, and after visiting many different doctors, I was hopeful about a visit to Boston PainCare. Dr. Silk assured me that he would figure out what was going on, and he sent me for an MRI as a first step. The results were vague, and he sent me to physical therapy, assuming that would sort it out. When I called back to say physical therapy wasn't helping, I was told by a scheduler (not even the doctor himself!) that Dr. Silk couldn't do anything else for me. No "Let's see what else might be causing this," no "let's run some more tests," just goodbye. The co-pay for two visits, plus MRI and physical therapy, was a huge waste. Avoid this place at all costs. They're not really interested in diagnosing something that's going to take any work. read more

Sarah Smith is an amazing nurse practitioner who always has time for me, returns calls and makes sure that I get the care I need. The staff, nursing and mas on the surgery side especially are wonderful. I've recommended the practice many times and wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

Boston Pain Care Center is one of best run facilities of it's type. After almost 2 years of dealing with constant back and neck pain from a previous car accident I was referred here. All staff including receptionists, nurses, assistants and doctors are extremely pleasant, friendly and welcoming! I recently had back surgery there which you can imagine made me very nervous! From the moment I walked in everyone explained everything to me from the types of medicine I would be given and how it was given to me to the procedure itself -the entire process was explained to me in full. They sit you down in a semi-private room with a reclining chair as they go over everything with you before hand. Following the procedure they brought me back to the chair and fed me apple juice and goldfish crackers till I was coherent enough to be driven home :) I will also be attending Boston Pain Care for my physical therapy which they have on site as well. I am very much looking forward to this (as much as I could at least!) I would recommend this place to anyone. They seem to understand the pain you are in and are very empathetic to your needs. Doctors were incredibly up to date on procedures and knowledgeable in exactly what I needed within 30 min of my first initial visit. read more

I too, like several others who wrote reviews, had a horrible experience at Boston PainCare and will never go back there. I saw Dr. Silk, who within my first visit recommended a spinal cord implant for pain, which I wasn't interested in. I had 2 other brief contacts with the Pain clinic, and figured out that they're all about doing invasive procedures, as that's where the money is. If you don't need one, they send you off to do nothing for your pain, as they can't bill your insurance for procedures if they only do medical management. They tell you to "have your PCP" write your prescriptions, we don't do that here". So unless you're up for an invasive procedure, save your time, money and pain, for somewhere else. Although it's a beautiful facility, they can maintain it that way by making sure they do a procedure on everyone who walks in the door. read more

CAUTION!! BEWARE of this clinic! Hopefully that caught your attention and I can tell you why you SHOULD NOT become a patient at this pain clinic! The initial evaluation was great, pleasant doctors, clean facility, thorough as to going over a patients expectations! 3 hours later, I was done with my initial eval, and then was informed that they would be calling me within 2 months to either inform me I was accepted into the pain med management program, or was denied services. After being accepted, it was if I just signed my life away. Meaning totally taken advantage of, having to go in every 2 weeks to meet with NP, a BEHAVIOTILIST and forced to do a functioning class and workshops! I was lied to on account of actually putting me on paid medications, which was the reason for me going to a PAIN CLINIC! Long story short, this is such a SCAM of a place! Basically as a pain clinic they KNOW people with chronic and disabling pain come here, to hopefully get some kind of help theough medication! HENCE THE TERM... Being accepted into the Pain Med Management program!!! U are at their mercy for some happiness and they know it, and CAPITILIZE ON THIS!! Making the most money they can, with unneeded procedure, classes you have to attend, also drug testing that, we the patients are obligated to pay!! Bottom line I was a patient of Boston pain care for over 6 months!! And I was worse off then when I started, and thousands of dollars poorer! Every week kept getting a run around about medications, they kept postponing and postponing it at every visit! Just had the most discouraging encounter trying to simply get an appointment. 1. Was told I had to have my physicians notes forwarded before they would schedule ... to make sure I am a 'good match' and that they have the right treatment modalities available to treat my condition'. I was seeking treatment for Fibromyalgia, possibly osteoarthritis, and meds management, all of which they advertise on their web page ... what is to match?? When I told her that I'm not being treated by a pain specialist, only my GP, the screener was confused and frustrated that I just wouldn't forward 'all my notes'. 2. Was told they 'pretty much only treat Fibromyalgia as a secondary condition. This implies I could not have FM for 26 years as a primary condition and basically discredits my reality and/or means they cannot actually work with me on FM management unless you fall into the 15% of people who have it as a demonstrated secondary condition (Hint: Update your page). 3. She screened me for my insurance very early in the conversation (was pretty much the only thing the receptionist was positive about.) Totally discouraging that I can't even get in the door to talk to someone until I jump through hoops and pre-demonstrate the validity of my self-reported pain. THIS kind of practice is the reason that people with FM do not get adequately treated. Conclusion: This is a machine shop for pain management procedures. Don't go here unless you have a well defined source of your pain. I found them to be suspicious that I was a "drug seeker" and looking for meds as my nerve pain did not have a clear cause. Despite being subjected to several painful procedures, in the end they kicked me to the curb rather than prescribe pain meds that might actually help. Since then I've gone elsewhere and my pain is being managed properly. After being a patient there for over 3 years, I am no better than the day I went. I tried all of there treatments to no avail. Needless to say, I was on so much pain medication. To top it off they end up treating you like z drug addict. Forget it if you need to cancel an appointment,you would have to be dead if you don't follow their 3 day policy. Otherwise, you will have to pay a cancelation fee of 50.00 dollars. However, there have been times I observed a patients not be charged. There were instances were the patient showed up a day late and asked if he would have to pay the 50.00 misses appointment. They said don't worry about it. In the beginning, I was hopeful but that faded away. I find it outrageous that they charge almost 1000.00 dollars to have a urine sample. No wonder our insurance premiums are so high. I go to a new pain clinic and it only cost the insurance company approxmately 200.00. In my opinion I find the clinic a money making business. Oh and by the way, if you have a certificate to use medical marijuana they will kick you out of the program. Which, this is discrimination since it is legal in MA. read more

They diagnosed the problem correctly, which is more than Mass General did, but the treatment by Dr. Dhar was far too conservative. He was so adamant that neurosurgery should be a last resort that he failed to see when that time had come. Another doc there stopped his treatment and sent me to a neurosurgeon. Where to start. Took five phone calls to schedule an appointment. Each time I left a message on the machine (at 1:30 pm), the machine said "calls after 2:00 pm will be returned next day". Apparently, calls *before* 2:00 pm will be ignored completely. Now I know why. When I got to the front desk for my appointment, rather than greet clients, the woman at the front desk pointed towards the touch screen for check in. To literally type my name on this touch screen took 5 minutes because it's not calibrated. When woman #2 told first woman that there were messages on the machine, #1 yelled at her "that's not our job". Then they took people out of order of how they checked in (taking the person who decided the touch screen wasn't worth it because of his long name before me). While filling out the 400 pages of forms (why were my medical records sent over if I have to fill all this crap out, but whatever), I was taken to an office and after two minutes of talking to me, the person realized my records had been sent over and went to fetch them and the doctor. Doctor came in, never came within 4 feet of me, and rushed through a list of questions in rapid fire succession, barely breathing and not allowing me to either think or elaborate. Then he went through my record and quickly explained my condition (in a way I cannot reasonable or clearly repeat to my spouse), writing down some things on a piece of paper. He then took a piece of scrap paper and told me to buy one of these two machines, and then took all of the other paper away and ran out of the room and pointed me to the exit. No telling me where or how I should buy the machine, what to expect (other than pointing out an object across the room similar in size), and what I need to do once I get it. No giving me a chance to breathe and absorb any of the information. Basically, you've got this, get the fuck away from me, and see you in a month. I'm not looking forward to that. Do not go to the Boston Pain Care Center if you have moderate to severe pain! They are not prepared to deal with people who do not respond to their first line treatments. They did not offer me anything other than injection after injection. Then they told me they would not prescribe any medications for me because my case was too severe. They did not provide any other options or resources--they just cut me loose. I would never send anyone there, because it's just too chancy that they'd get any results, and why live through months of additional pain? I'm now struggling to find some other place that is truly interdisciplinary, and will actually do something for me. read more

My experience has been terrible! I suffer from trigeminal neuralgia as well as cluster headaches and far too many other serious health issues to list here, for example I've had a stroke, brain surgery etc. I'm in constsant debilitating pain. After at least three years of 'treatment' there I've received absolutely no relief and no response whenever I told them I was getting no relief. I am an honest, decent, law abiding citizen who just wants some pain relief, but I felt like I was always treated as a criminal there. Finally I have had enough of their terrible treatment and walked out mid appointment. For Heaven's sake, stay away from this place - It is horrible. I really think the state needs to investigate this place. You just don't treat people the way they do. read more

This place is amazing! Dr. Keene and his staff have taken great care of me. I was recently diagnosed with a serious pain condition and Dr. Keene has already given me 5 Stellate Ganglion blocks. I had my first Cervical Epidural today. There was one time when the sedation they use wasn't going in my I.V,. during a block. I brought this up to them during the procedure that I didn't feel sedated. They stopped what they were doing right away, and re-inserted my I.V. in another spot to ensure I recieved my sedation so I would be comfortable. Dr. Keene was the first Dr. out of 12 Doctors that I saw in eight months that listened to me. He is empathetic, genuinely cares about his patients. He even teared up with me a bit when I opened my hand for the first time in 8 months after a block. He is funny and cracks jokes in the surgical room, which I appreciate so much, it lessens the tension and stress. He is a great Dr. whom I can't say enough about. I cannot express how much I appreciate him and his staff at the Boston Pain Care Center in Waltham, Ma. I was told many times this was "all in my head" or I was :making it up" by Doctors who didn't want to deal with me. Come to find out it is a neurological, debillitating pain condition! Dr. Keene recognized this right away in the office the first time I saw him. I had a diagnosis that day. Without them I would be still seeing Doctors who are egotistical, don't want to help me or just don't care. If you have a pain condition and need treatment, I HIGHLY recommend him and his staff. I've had problems with pain since 2010, I've been to the "best" neurologists and specialists in the New England area. None of them could come close to a diagnosis. After many failed attempts my Primary Care doctor referred me to the Boston Pain Center. With a lot of doubt I went in early May 2015, let me tell you after a few minor tests they actually gave me a Diagnosis and a path to fix it!!! You don't just see a doctor you see a team, very caring team of experts. I might not get rid of all my pain, but I'm on the road to dealing with it and getting some quality of life back. If you don't fit the mold for their target market, I found it a waste of time. I'm actually worse than when I started. Their primary goal is to make money.. The team approach seemed so ideal that I went in with high expectations. They start off by mistrusting anything you've told them about your medication history. They jump to conclusions about treatment options and I've had so many procedures that have not helped one bit. The doctor who does trigger point injections doesn't really know enough about it. I've had very good treatment elsewhere, but it isn't covered by insurance so I was looking forward to injections covered by insurance. Ha, after 3 shots that did nothing I finally went back to the good place and paid the big bucks for treatment that produces relief. The only good thing is the functional rehabilitation which is what is getting me back to functioning, but that is slow for me and I'm afraid if I quit their medication management service I'll have to quit that too. Dr Counihan has been so understanding of my serious deconditioning after spending months in bed because the pain was so bad. They want to prescribe my pain meds at the level I took when I was only staying in bed. The problem is that's not enough to help me work to build my strength. My pain is not a constant thing that I can say take a pill every day, but they don't understand it and treat me like a drug seeking drug user. I have kept meticulous records of my pill taking for 2 years but they only seem to want you to take a certain amount every day. I try to take pills only when I absolutely need them. Some days I take none. I am being told I signed a contract agreeing to their methods. Yes, I did even though the doctor there said I might not be able to do that with my erratic need for meds. As I said they are there to make money and do unnecesary procedures and bill my insurance many times what they actually get paid. I just don't think they are what they say they are. read more

My primary pain doctor decided to join their practice in November, so I followed him over. In the beginning things were great. I felt the staff was wonderful and the care I was getting, incredible. After only 1 month, they knew me by name and addressed me by it. It was very nice. Then suddenly after 1 month of treatments, I get a phone call out of the blue. They told me that they DO NOT take my insurance and they are cancelling all future appointments that I had scheduled which included a Trigger Point Injection visit, a second part of a Sleep Study visit, a visit with the pain nurse practitioner for my first full month of pain meds for pain management and an Epidural for my Sciatica. They left me high and dry!!!! I only had less than 2 weeks of pain medication, but was okay with muscle relaxants refills. I immediately called my Primary Care and luckily he was able to help me with the medication issue and gave me some advice. He was astonished that this clinic did this to me in this manner!!! He felt it was irresponsible and unprofessional! He also stated that if I get any bills, don't pay them, due to this lack of responsibility!!! Now I have to wait until the end of April to see a new pain doctor for my pain management needs, no thanks to this clinic! If you need to get into a pain management program, find somewhere else if you can. Avoid this clinic at all costs!!! read more

This place turned out to be a joke. I was referred their by my primary care doctor and my back doctor. Both wanting me to have long term pain management. I went through their process and was never informed of their decision. Not until I called was I informed that there's "nothing" they could do for me. I've been on pain management in CA for 7 years without a problem. I move to MA and nobody wants to step up and give a script for needed pain meds. They took the check from the insurance company though. I wouldn't tell anyone to go there. They're a scam preying upon victims who really do need help. read more

I can't say enough about the Facility. The most important part to me is they treat me with Respect and they do..... They are positive & friendly from the time you walk in to when you leave. Best Part they helped. I have had experience with the Med Management, Physical Therapy, Sleep Center and Surgery Center.....plus many of the Drs, Nurses and support Staff. I Have NO Complaints. They truly do care. They take as much time as needed to make sure you understand Anything they say. Only issue is they are Not closer to me :) but I am happy to travel almost an hour. If I could give 10 stars I would. I almost cancelled my first appointment because some of the reviews here scared me. Thank goodness I was desperate enough to try. I figured I could always just go to the first appointment and not go back. I had my initial appointment with Dr Giblin and 2 procedures after that with Dr Bajwa for nerve pain in my face and head from the shingles 2 years ago. Everyone, and I mean every single person was kind, compassionate, and caring. No one ever made me feel rushed or that I was asking too many questions. At the first appointment I knew I was in the right place. When the doctor told me she felt they could help I cried. I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. The day of the first procedure, I told Dr. Bajwa that if I get to a 2 on the pain scale I would consider that a home run. He looked at me and told me that's great but he is shooting for a 0. I am grateful that I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. It isn't an overnight fix - its a process and it takes time and I'm okay with that. For the first time in 2 years I feel hope that I can begin to live my life again. Thank you Boston Pain Care - you are all amazing. read more

this place is really experienced with everything they do. they have a sleep study center, physical therapy area, and like a surgical area where they can give you trigger point injections.i like the people and think there nice but i feel like they just want to give me as many medications as possible. i have a hard time taking pills and i take alot. there giving it to me for the benefit of the drug, but i told them from the beginning i would rather have natural remedies. they did find out in my sleep study i have RLS but now im in debt $930 just to find out something i knew i already had. it is expensive even with my insurance but they know what there doing, and its for your health so i cant complain.. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone. The nursing staff are bullies. When the condition became too complicated, they ended my treatment without any attention to continuity of care. The physician who provided injections was knowledgeable but the nursing support was horrible making this place a terrible experience. read more

While I have to admit the doctors here seem much more competent than the pain clinic I was previously going to at St Elizabeth's it takes forever to actually get treatment here. After ending up in the ER due to severe pain from the arthritis in my spine my doctor at boston pain care recommended facet joint injections. However it took him 2 weeks to submit the request to my insurance company and now 3 weeks later I am still waiting because the Dr. didn't send all the information that the insurance company needs. Also when I first started going there I was told to get an EMG since they thought I had nerve damage. It turns out I do have nerve damage but no one told me how horrible the EMG was going to be and only after I had it done I was told that the results of the EMG wouldn't have changed my treatment plan anyway. And despite having the nerve damage and arthritis in my spine I have not been able to get pain medication even though I have been going there for almost 5 months. I am now out of work due to the pain since they have not been helpful at all. I've had to spend so much on co-pays telling doctors the same thing over and over again and nothing ever gets done. I am starting to feel like it's a scam. They just want me to keep coming in and make me do tests but refuse any actual treatment so I wont get any better. **Updated to add: they never bothered to fax my insurance company the paperwork they needed so my insurance denied the request for the treatment I need. I have been in severe pain for months and now have lost my job since I was not able to go back to work when the doctor said I should have been able to work again. I also don't know why they refuse to prescribe me any medication. They know I have nerve damage and arthritis and have had several surgeries. They act like I broke my spine intentionally just to get drugs. read more

This place is awesome; my doctor recommended it when physical therapy and massage didn't help my neck pain. Most of the staff are super friendly and attentive and the doctors are really knowledgeable. Love the interdisciplinary approach; they will try different treatments until you are as pain free as possible. I felt like I had my own team of doctors. My insurance covered everything on the surgery center side and I paid copays only for PT and trigger point injections. They also have a sleep center. It would be hard to find all of those services under one roof anywhere else. read more

I was under the care of DR. ZAHID BAJWA for my cluster headaches from 2002, when he was at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, to 2013, when we left Boston. When Dr. Bajwa left Beth Israel to become the director of the Headache Institute (Boston PainCare), I followed him there. Before I came under Dr. Bajwa's care, I used to regularly get absolutely awful cluster headaches (often referred to as "suicide headaches" for their terrible intensity, considered by many pain doctors to be the "worst possible pain"), and the previous doctors just gave me narcotics, with all their attendant complications, and I found the pain debilitating enough to jeopardize my commitments to my job and family. Dr. Bajwa patiently worked with me regularly to adjust my treatments to a) prevent my headaches and b) manage the acute incidents -- he also set me up with a biofeedback expert DR. JOSHUA WOOTTON, who taught me meditation and other relaxation techniques. As a result of all these efforts, the frequency of my cluster headaches is now quite low, and I am able to manage the occasional outbreaks without any narcotics! I also love the fact that he is very humble and very respectful -- even though he is a leading expert on headaches (he has literally "written the book" on headaches!), he would always tell me (and I presume his other patients as well): "This is your body, so you are the expert, not me." Finally, he is a phenomenally kind person -- for example, he even set my wife up with her OB-GYN (DR. USHA SARMA) who delivered our now eight year old daughter. This is one of the only clean and upstanding pain facilities I have been to with warm and caring staff. The medication program takes a while to get into because you have to "apply" but the coordinator (Janelle) took the time to answer all of my questions and went out of her way to keep me updated and keep lines open with my primary care. I walked out of my first appointment with a hand full of recommendations and feeling comforted that I was going to be taken care of, and I have been. read more

This place is not a good choice for long term pain care. They are more concerned with getting you into as many appointments as they can, and regardless if you need it or not they force you to take PT sessions. They approach people who require opiate medication as possible criminals. Go elsewhere if you want to feel anything other than a burden to these people. read more

Be sure you have EXCELLENT, and I mean EXCELLENT insurance before going here. They charge you 800 dollars for a urine drug test and they require one AT EVERY VISIT. To demonstrate how ridiculous that pricing is, my insurance company, BCBS paid them SIX dollars for the test. I went thru the entire testing and after that and three thousand dollars they told me I was denied into their program because my symptoms were "psychiatric". Well guess what- I wee to a different doctor and I had a ruptured meniscus in my knee. These people upset me greatly telling me my pain was psychologically but it was really a soft tissue injury that was undiagnosed for two years. This practice is only there to run up the evaluation bill then decline patients. Oh but wait - they refuse to give me pain medicine BUT they wanted me to come back repeatedly for psychological counseling sessions. As one person said run away, if u can. They need to re-read the Hippocratic oath and have it tattooed on their arm because they clearly are not practicing it. I reported them to my insurance company as potential fraud because at my first appointment they said I was a good candidate for their program then they did an about face when they realized I was not one who needed to come every month for the urine test, exam, group sessions, PT, etc. I was rejected because I would not of been a high revenue producing patient. read more
