Cataract surgery is a mature and straightforward procedure, with traditional methods almost always successful. Dr. Jason Brenner has undoubtedly performed many successful surgeries. However, this was my first time learning that Boston Vision offers "upgrade options," requiring patients to pay extra on top of insurance coverage. I do not understand why such a simple surgery needs these costly add-ons, yet I chose the laser option at $2,400 per eye. From the very first night after my surgery on January 6, I knew the lens measurement and design were wrong. I could not see anything clearly within 1.5 meters. I could not read, write, cook, see food while eating, , phone, or use a laptop. Even connecting my laptop to a large screen did not help. The blurriness disrupts my daily life and affects my brain function. According to the surgery contract, my vision should have been targeted at -1.55 to -1.65, but the actual result is -0.75. Instead of showing compassion, Dr. Jason Brenner blamed me for "signing the agreement." Yet it was his surgical design and operation that failed to achieve the agreed target. Before surgery, whenever I tried to confirm that I needed to read, write, and use phone and laptop comfortably, he was impatient and dismissive, repeating only that I would "be fine." He never disclosed the actual target numbers. After surgery, he insisted the outcome was acceptable and let me toward invasive second surgeries--removing and replacing the lens, implanting a second lens, or LASIK. These are all risky, invasive procedures. How could I trust him again? I asked for a refund of the failed surgery and for coverage of future corrective treatment at another practice. He refused. Instead, he hired three lawyers to pressure me into removing my online reviews. He even canceled my already scheduled appointment with another Boston Vision doctor, which was meant to measure my vision and plan next steps. Dr. Jason Brenner then declared that I was "discontinued" as a patient at Boston Vision altogether. But I was not a patient just with him at Boston Vision, I saw several other doctors before the surgery. What is the purpose of offering a before-surgery measurement if the doctor does not take responsibility if his measurement and operation failed? Under his logic, patients must simply accept poor outcomes, undergo more invasive surgeries, or wear glasses. In my case, glasses do not work because his incorrect design makes my two eyes unbalanced. Meanwhile, my right eye surgery--done at another practice five years ago with traditional methods--was entirely successful, covered by insurance, and required no expensive "options." Cataract surgery is supposed to be consistently successful, with rare failures. When failures do occur, doctors should help patients resolve the issue--not silence them. Dr. Jason Brenner shows no care for my suffering. Instead, he frames my complaints as "attacks" against him. Base on my personal experience from consultation to recovery: Consultation appt was done in Milford closer to home. Location was great, staffs were really friendly, wait time can be long as it seemed that they were trying to fit in as many patients as possible. Dr Patel was pleasant and the assistants were all helpful and friendly. However, I felt rushed by my appointment. The following up email from the lasik team was always very efficient and helpful guidance to what to expect, videos of the procedure, the dos and don'ts for recovery and other additional information were sent out by email. The lasik team was able to answer questions via email. I felt a bit more at ease knowing what to expect from the surgery. A month before the surgery date, I was informed that my doctor won't be doing my surgery. I have had to reschedule my surgery. It was a bit unexpected since I have already taken those dates off from my workplace. Anyhow, I was able to get my surgery done a week before my original appointment. It was done by Dr Brenner instead. On Monday of my surgery week, I received my surgery time and more details by email. Parking can be a pain especially there isn't any designated parking lot for Boston Vision. Meters are everywhere so you can park on the street. Upon arrival, there was a bit of waiting time. Then more testings done. Met with Dr Brenner after one or two testings. They finalized and corrected something important in the contract regarding of my right eye being the distance eye and left eye to be the eye for reading since I was doing mono vision lasik. Dr Brenner was nice and easy to talk to. Answered a couple of my concerns and questions. From then on, they asked me to sit in the waiting area and to be called in for surgery. Then an assistant came back and ask me to re do one of the eye exams coz they didn't get the results or right readings. Went back to re do the test then I was being asked to sit in the lounge room to be called for the surgery. Snacks and water or drinks were provided. As I walked into the surgical room, lots of bright lights above me. I laid down on a flat bed and immediately the assistants put some numbing eye drops on my eyes. Everything kind of just went really fast. One after an other. My left eye definitely needed more numbing drops as I asked. So they went to my right eye and started there first. I could see the whole procedure. Tool to open my eye lids and kept them open. I think they said it took about 12 mins for both eyes. But the most traumatic experience I had was with the left eye, I could feel the pressure pressing against my eye, the blurred vision as they lifted up the flap, the smoking or burning smell of the lasik when I stared at the green dots or light, the tool they adjust the flap back on.... I could feel it all. But the right eye not so much, just the huge pressure and the blurry vision. After the procedure was over, I was guided to the other room, and out the waiting room already. I was given written instructions to follow up the day of, the day after to a week of what to avoid and what to do for recovery process. Eye drop medication to apply, Artificial tear drops, eye shields and protection sunglasses too all including in the take home kit. The first night was the hardest, no face wash and avoid water in the eyes. Slept with the eye shield and applied eye medication. I would recommend to stick with everything that they told you! It's been finally a week, my vision is still a bit blurry but 20/20 vision according to Dr Patel (from the one week follow up appt). Needs to be patient with the healing process. Overall, I am glad I did it despite the discomfort and inconvenience for a couple of weeks or months. read more

She obviously didn't expect to be asked to do extra work. She rushed thru the exam and i knew I wouldn't use the prescription she gave me because I don't think she cared to do her very best. Dr. Vinnie Keshav was very pleasant and professional. Second visit was for a peripheral vision test. The tech couldn't find the right lens to put in so the yellow dot i was to concentrate on was blurry. She did the test anyway and stated she would put a note in my chart to that effect. I could barely see the flashing lights. I feel the results will be skewed because the test wasn't done properly. I did voice my concern knowing it was a very expensive test. I may not return for my six-month visit, depending on what ophthalmologists are available on my insurance for 2025. read more

I had the ICL procedure done in mid 2024. The preparation was fine and so were all of the on-site visits prior to the procedure. The procedure went well as well and the doctor was very nice. The issue is that the side effects did not go away within a few weeks or a few months as they said but took more than half a year. I was fine with that too, however, after 3-4 months after the procedure, I started getting eye styes. Initially I did not pay much attention, I started using some drops/creams, as I had these a long time ago. It became an issue when nothing helped anymore: no creams, no drops and no antibiotics. I had 2 eye surgeries to remove those styes (chalazion), but they keep coming back. Every day is a struggle now, as both of my eyes are swollen for over 1 year, swollen and red. And the only reason for this, based on my doctor's opinion, is the ICL. Now I have to decide to remove those lenses and go back to glasses, or keep leaving with chalazions on both eyes, which are very much visible, uncomfortable and itchy. read more

This is an update review. Please read my previous review as more detailed experience. So six years has past, I still feel great and see clearly. Still thankful and appreciate Boston Laser and Dr. Melki. Everyday I wake up and can see clearly, It reminded me to thank to Dr. Melki. and Boston Laser. I wish Dr. Melki and Boston Laser staffs will have a happy healthy life. And I hope all clients that goes to Boston Laser will have a great, and successful experience. I do understand that no matter how great or skill a person are, there are always a chance that will fail. Maybe it is 10%, maybe it is 5%, perhaps it is 1%, 0.1% or even success and complication later, everyone is different. The best we can do is do our research and find the best we can get and pick the best one (highest success rate one.) for our own. The reason I said best for you is because best for me doesn't mean it is best for you. All I can do is tell you my experience as detailed as possible and you be the judge. Because I do understand it is our eyes and our eyes are priceless and precious to us. I also do understand that we will be afraid and scare to put our sight's fate on another person's hand no matter how small the fail rate are. but that's life, during our life time we take all kind of risks everyday. It could be a small risk, it could be a big risk. So do your best, pick your doctor and have courage and faith. That is the best we can do. If you are a religious person you can pray, it will help you feel a bit better. If you are not, you can talk to more ppl and do as much research details as possible and it will also makes you feel better. I had the EVO implantable collamer lens (ICL) surgery with Dr. Jason Brenner in October 2023 and 9 months later, I am still seeing 20/15 in each eye, which is better than 20/20 vision. I had a high minus prescription prior to surgery and never was interested in LASIK. What made me feel more comfortable was that the ICL procedure is reversible... in that the lens is easily removable. The procedure itself took about 10 minutes total and my recovery was only a day. I initially saw glare and halos but over time they have disappeared. I'm really happy that I went forward with it. I highly recommend Boston Vision for refractive surgery! read more

What prompted me to write this is that today I got a call from Boston Vision, from a pleasant younger man, wanting to know if I wanted to book an appointment. That would be - no. After my original appointment I called to share my experience. And I canceled the appointment they had set up. Again, I shared that today on the phone - twice now - and this is why I decided to share it today. I was seen by Vinny Keshav, MD. in the Milford, Massachusetts location. This is my personal perception of that interaction as it pertained to my appointment. Prior I had seen an eye doctor in Westboro who told me I had ruptured the iris and had pigment floating in the back of my eye. I got another opinion and that eye doctor told me I had blepharitis and gave me an eye drop, eye ointment, and an antibiotic. To no avail it would get slightly better than worse and worse. It was really concerning. I saw Boston Vision had opened and researched it, called and spoke with someone, and was recommended Vinny Keshav. The office was nice. The staff seemed pleasant. The women on staff spoke well about Vinny Keshav and how charming and friendly he was. That was not my experience. He seemed off. Like he didn't really want to be there - in Milford - at that location. That was my initial impression. He was abrupt, not too interested. Concurred it was blepharitis and manipulated by eyes and lids and squeezed out puss. Being the patient I couldn't see what was happening. He then went on to hand me a pamphlet on a procedure that would heat my eye and allow for more inflection or puss to be squeezed out - not covered by insurance and that one would have to pay for it but there was no discussion of price. He called in a Z Pack - if I recall - or something similar and that was that. That was it. I checked out. Spoke with the two women at the front desk. And left. This summarizes my experience and what I now think of him and that office. I looked in the review mirror and my eyes were filled with puss. My vision was somewhat blurry - he said - that will clear up prior to my leaving. And there was puss on my lower lids - yellow sticky puss - that smeared when I tried to wipe it clean with a tissue. I had to return home to wash my face before going back out. Not he, nor the women at the desk - who had to see it... especially him - who or so it seems - couldn't be bothered to clean off what he squeezed out. Otherwise he would have. Now wouldn't have he. The women at the desk said nothing - maybe they were oblivious... but seriously. This is just my opinion and I wouldn't go back. I found him to be 'not wanting to be bothered,' as if it was beneath him. He's younger, specialized, apparently works out and may be a tad entitled, he seemed self absorbed - why wouldn't your doctor clean you off unless they just don't care. Just didn't want to be bothered because it was beneath him... at least that how he made me feel. I didn't matter. Other wise he would have at least cleaned the puss off my eyes - I couldn't see what was there. He may be a superior surgeon or specialist - many who are don't have the best bed side manners. Maybe he just didn't like something about me... BUT - on a human level, a professional level, or a compassionate level, when one takes on the responsibility to exam someone, they should at least leave them in the same condition they found them. And if they squeeze puss and infection out of one's eyes then - one would expect - they would at least clean or wash it off. Not just leave them to wander around like that. I personally have no use for any person who treats someone with a lack of dignity. read more

They transfer you to voicemail, which then takes days to return your call, if they ever do. Same with email. The doctor seemed okay, not great. I had corrective vision (PRK) surgery at their Andover location with Dr. Keshav about 6 months ago, and I still regret it every day. Summary: This place is the definition of an assembly line, the doctor made a mistake during my surgery that caused delayed healing and tremendous pain (specifically, he put the healing lens on inside out on my freshly lazered eye, which caused a significant scratch), and they had the WRONG prescription in my records, so that I was "overcorrected" during surgery and now have worse vision than I did wearing lenses. My prescription has been -2.75 for nearly a decade, but their records started that I was -2.25. This mistake was confirmed by Dr. Brenner during my follow-up call with him. Shortly after my surgery, I brought my issues to the attention of the office manager, who was quite kind and told me that Dr. Keshav would be giving me a call to explain what had happened (it sounded as though I was on speaker phone, so I believe Dr. Keshav was listening to my concerns), and that I should also expect a call from Dr. Brenner. That call from Dr. Keshav never came, so I called Dr. Brenner, who didn't respond to my voicemail (when we did connect, he said he was at a conference when I left the voicemail, so he never got it.). Finally, when I called him again, he acted as though I was wasting his time, and his response to the mistakes made was something like "Well neither of those [mistakes] are that bad." Avoid this place at all costs, unless you're seeing Dr. Emily Nangle (who is the only one there that actually seems to care about her patients - I wish I could review her separately, but she is the outlier of that practice and is the only exception to this terrible place.) Details: - I was advised the morning of the procedure of a serious potential complication. They asked just before my surgery about my medical history and realized then that I was at an increased risk for a permanent and painful neurological complication. I considered leaving, as this felt like something I should have been advised of in advance and allowed to properly consider. But I was stranded without a car, had been saving for and considering this surgery for years, and the doctor assured me it would be fine. I hand-wrote that new detail in the terms, and I signed it. - I was given a small dose of oral Diazepam (Valium) 15 minutes before surgery. I take Valium on occasion for sciatica, so I know that it takes 45-60 minutes to set in. In other words, this medication is provided as theater and is more about relaxing you after the surgery than during it. - The surgery itself was like an assembly line of terror. You're hardly acknowledged as a person, as the doctor and assistants speak to each other like you're not fully conscious and petrified. You're advised to take Advil as soon as you get home, but I implore you to take some with you and take it as soon as surgery is over. I got caught in traffic, so the pain was already setting in when I got home. Again, if they cared at all about your pain, they would dispense this to all patients, but that is not the case. - At my follow-up the next day, I was in more pain than ever before (I'm no wimp, I played D1 field hockey in college and recently broke 3 bones in my back during an equestrian event - that pain didn't come close to this). Consistently throughout these visits, my pain was not acknowledged by the nurses and repeated back to me as "discomfort." The nurses kept saying things like "well, the surgery can be more painful for some people than others." Gas lighting at its finest. - I was told to expect a few days of discomfort, but I was in severe pain for 1 week, and couldn't see clearly for 2 weeks. For those first 2 weeks, I could hardly use the computer or my phone, which made it impossible to perform my job. Now, over 6 months later, I have significant sensitivity to bright light and dust, both of which I didn't have before my surgery here. read more

I scheduled an appointment back in Nov for a date in Jan. I picked the date so that my sister and I could get our surgeries done on the same day. The week before the appointment, my surgery was cancelled and rescheduled. I didn't receive an email validation of the cancellation/ rescheduling and they told me to call the office if the new time didn't work. I've called back a couple times and emailed but no response. Seems like this poor scheduling/ customer service matches past feedback (see Jon W.'s review from 11/2/2021). Still looking forward to the surgery. I am overall not thrilled with my results. I got my lasik in 2019. Immediately after the procedure I had perfect 20/20 vision. Within 3 months that regressed to 20/30 and it has stabilized there since. I now need glasses to actually see properly and it's frustrating because I chose lasik specifically so I wouldn't need to wear glasses. I am not eligible for a lasik touch up because my vision is "within the margin of error" for lasik and apparently my cornea is quite flat now. No one told me about this "margin of error" before my surgery. Also, touch up surgeries are generally PRK surgeries that come with additional risks and longer recovery times, another thing I was not told at the time of surgery. I assumed that touch ups would be a viable option but it seems like they really aren't. Immediately before my surgery I was presented with a form I needed to sign stating that I was at an increased risk of halos due to my large pupils. No one had told me this previously and it was minutes before my surgery. I chose to sign the form and thankfully I have never experienced halos but I found this unprofessional and in retrospect it was probably a red flag. At the time of booking, I was given a lot of brochures claiming 95% of people are happy with their results. But no one has ever asked me if I am happy with my results so I am skeptical of this statistic. Maybe I was just one of the unlucky ones, but I think many of these lasik offices make exaggerated claims about their surgeries. They make claims like "if you aren't happy with your results you can get free touch ups for life!" but then it's actually not recommended to get touch ups. If I could do it over, I probably would've waited a few more years. Lasik surgeries are getting better each year and it's unfortunate I'm stuck with this "margin of error" that can't be fixed. read more

Horrible, horrible practice. During my annual exam last year I swore I wouldn't come back and couldn't find another ophthalmologist with panel availability so got stuck coming here again. Appointments are never scheduled properly, staff including providers are incredibly rude and insensitive, and I have absolutely no confidence my medical records are ever sent to my PCP and other providers. Updating the review 11 months after surgery, as someone needing a enhancement/correction. I have close to a -1 prescription in one eye (the eye where I got lasik) and the team has been very helpful and accommodating in scheduling a correction for that eye. I need to move for a few months to be with family and they have been helpful in scheduling around that. I have a "lifetime warranty" thankfully. I have surgery scheduled very soon and will update the review as I hope it goes well! Also, PRK eye is gooddistance wise, 20/20. I do have halos/starbursts at night in both eyes, but nothing too bad. Once I knew I wanted LASIK, I actually went to 3 different clinics to do some research and actually chose Boston Laser based on their reviews, their financing options and how comfortable I felt in their office. Naturally all consultations take time, each place does different tests, but at a separate LASIK clinic location I was in their office for 3.5-4 hours and when I decided to leave without paying a guaranteed surgery day deposit because I wanted to discuss the finances with my husband, they were pushy. Boston Laser is the exact opposite. My consultation was quick, comfortable and informative. The staff at the Wellesley office, where my consultation was, is also very nice and not pushy at all. On the day of my LASIK, I had to go to their Brookline location. There is only street parking so leave time to find a spot and walk. The waiting room had food and coffee and was BUSY. I did end up waiting longer than I expected, but it was a Friday (surgery day) in December and it's right before year end so I'm sure lots of patients were using their HSAs. The procedure was surprisingly quick (less than 15 mins), almost completely painless and yes ODD. You can "see" it all happening. Dr. Brenner was great, comforting and kept me informed about what was going on the entire time. After going home, my eyes started burning and watering like crazy as the numbing drops wear off, but I still managed to squeeze in a 4 hour required nap. Woke up, had some dinner with my family, then went back to bed with my trusty plastic goggles taped on. The next day I woke up with really blood shot eyes but with perfect vision!! I followed the rules (avoid getting water or soaps in the eye) and actually avoided eye makeup for a whole week (recommended is only 2 days, but I didn't want to chance fudging up my new eyes!). I haven't had any issues with dry eye or halos or floaters. Now when I'm driving at night, headlights do have a starburst look to them, but nothing worse than my night blindness with an astigmatism before and nothing horribly distracting. All in all I'm incredibly happy with my results! I'm so glad I went through with LASIK and so happy with Boston Laser! read more

I got PRK on Friday. Today is Tuesday, so it's been four days. My vision is still blurry as expected, but it's getting better everyday. The assistants and doctor (Brenner) I interacted with were all great. The fellow has had a tired energy the two times I've interacted with her, but I think she's doing a fine job. It's easy to reach out to them if you have a question (they give you your doctor's cell as well as Dr. Melki's, though I didn't use them). There's an online patient portal that you can use to e-mail your questions; I used this once after my evaluation to ask Dr. Brenner a question, and he responded the next day. It's not like they provide a very personal service; it feels like a place where they try to do as many procedures as they can since it brings in money, but not to the point that they will be careless with your care. I think they did a good job with my eyes; I'm not fully healed, but I'm healing more and progressing everyday. My PRK procedure ended up costing $4900 ($1000-off promotion for the start of the year) with an optional $450 lifetime insurance, which I was told that 70% of people opt to get. Only 3% of people need touch-ups, which is included in the initial cost. Their website has a good Q&A section where Dr. Melki has answered lots of questions. They also give you some reading material at your free evaluation. I appreciate that they try to educate their patients. On the day of my procedure, they gave me written instructions for my eye drops (which I couldn't read too well for two days afterward - just a heads-up to plan ahead), a pair of sunglasses (ill-fitting, but I think most people already own sunglasses they can use), and a Boston Laser t-shirt. During the procedure, I was given a choice of holding an elephant or a sloth stuffed animal (I chose both!). The procedure lasted about 12 minutes. It's not cheap, but paying a lot of money makes me feel like I'm using a quality service?? They're also affiliated with MEEI and have fellows working there, so it's in their interest to provide good service and protect their reputation. I've had a good (albeit short) experience with them so far! Disclosure: I have an extra incentive to leave a review because when you write a review, you get entered into a drawing to win $150 toward a pair of sunglasses (which I don't have because I've always worn eyeglasses, so I didn't really wear sunglasses over them). Update on previous review: I stopped by to request my medical records so I could go and get a REAL exam elsewhere. I was told it "could take up to two weeks"; even though the records are 12 feet away, the doctor "needs to sign off". Whatever. I filled out the form (and no one asked me for ID... weird) and said to call. Two weeks went by... no call. Went back yesterday to DEMAND my records - no one had ever acted on my request, and they couldn't even find it. Finally got my 20 yrs (20 years!!!) worth of records and left, never to return. read more

My son had an appointment here in August 2022. He had an eye exam and received a prescription for both eye glasses and contact lenses. Let me emphasize he did NOT have a contact lens fitting as they claim and billing us for one. He's had contacts for a few years now and had his ONE AND ONLY contact lens fitting YEARS ago when Dr. Dunker was at Arrigg Eye & Ear. We have been trying to get a bill taken care of for this FRAUDULENT charge for a "contact fitting" that NEVER HAPPENED. NOT ONCE did my son sit down with someone to show he could put contacts in his eyes and remove them. The office is stating this is for the contact prescription! THAT MAKES ZERO SENSE! I This is FRAUD, they were paid by the insurance company for the office visit and keep billing my son $125 for a non-existent contact lens fitting. Not a single person in this damn office can get their story straight or have the appropriate person contact us to fix this issue. Not to mention their phones are horrendous and just ring & ring. It's been a month and this is still not fixed. It's a shame Arrigg merged with this awful company. My son has been seeing Dr. Dunker for years but after this nonsense, we will be looking elsewhere and warning everyone of their fraudulent billing scams. read more

Used QualSight to set up a consult in April 2013. I had to wait 6 weeks during which I couldn't wear my contact lenses. My consult was on a Tuesday, and my surgery (Instralase Custom LASIK) was scheduled for 3 days later! The staff was helpful and friendly, and Dr. Melki was professional and also funny. IRC, my eyesight for the first month was 20/10, and later settled at 20/20. The procedure itself was quick, but for someone like me, it was a bit uncomfortable. I'm glad I didn't watch any LASIK videos on YouTube beforehand. I opted for the "lifetime" guarantee (free "touch-ups" as needed) for an additional $400 or so, but haven't had to use it yet. Saved a bunch of money using QualSight, but LASIK is still a luxury expense! I'm glad I treated myself :) read more

Appointments are scheduled every 5 minutes, no lie as stated by the doctors assistant and I observed on the scheduling screen. This is worse than a meat market. As I sat in the holding area the doctor had seen 4 patients in 10 minutes, absolutely true as I observed. I told the assistant, who took my eye pressure and eye sight test, what was wrong with my eye and she typed it into the computer. Now comes the doctor flying in like he's at a race against time. Never even looks at the notes and starts asking me about my issue but thinks it's the other eye. So I got my 3 minute appointment and some meds. Two weeks later eye is still hurting. I went back, same issue, now as doctor flies in he's trying to prescribe me what he prescribed me last time. Never even looked at records to see that I had been there 2 weeks prior. This place is a money making joke. I feel sorry for the physicians that are forced to work at this pace. Quality time is not given. read more
