Botín is more of a gimmick than a great restaurant. And that's fine. I don't mind paying for a gimmick. When you're going to a restaurant that advertises the fact that they hold the Guinness World Record for oldest continuously operated restaurant in the world (opening in 1725), then you know you're probably in for a bit of a song and dance. And sure enough, that's what we got. Hear me - the food is fine. The soups were terrific. The ice cream and chocolate sauce was excellent. The wine was fine. The bread was OK. The main courses weren't that great. A bit primitive, if you will. It was as if someone just roasted some meat and threw it on a plate. I got the suckling pig, and it was difficult to eat. Like, literally difficult. It was hard to get the meat off the bone. But I'll say, the skin was terrific. They ended up rolling out a traditional Spanish band to walk around the restaurant and sing. Guess if you're in Spain, this is one of the must try... Spain is known for their suckling pigs especially this place and the one is Segovia...but this one is well known being of the oldest restaurant The trick is to come here early and reserve a spot for dinner. If you want to skip the long wait, come during lunch before they close. I recommend after 14:30. We ordered 4 suckling pigs and it was more than enough. They charge for bread, butter, water, pretty much everything. Ask to sit downstairs, it's pretty cool. Don't forget to check out their wine cellar. A must have is the Cochinillo and Cordero asado which are the house specialities. This restaurant apparently is the oldest restaurant in the world since 1725! It serves traditional Madrid cuisine such as suckling pig. We didn't have reservations, but they were still able to accommodate us right away on their outdoor patio! I would recommend choosing the Botín Menu for around 48,50 euros served autumn until winter so you can try a little of everything. It's a perfect full course meal to share for two people even though they say it's for one person. The highlight of the whole meal was definitely the garlic soup with egg, perfect for scooping up with pieces of bread that they serve with the meal. The ice cream with melted chocolate was also deliciouso! Today we ate at the oldest operating restaurant in the world! It opened in 1725 and has never closed. We were told Goya was a waiter here and Hemingway ate here. It was a wonderful experience. They are known for their suckling pig. (My husband made a special request for the pig ears.). Since we live in South Florida we love our Cuban pork and were a little concerned but it was absolutely delicious! This is the OLDEST RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD according to Guinness World Records. It's hard for me to even wrap my mind around that, but it's true. There's a plaque outside to verify it as well. Located right out of the center of Madrid, this restaurant was founded in 1725 and is still serving up delicious food. World-famous artist Goya used to work here as a dishwasher and Hemingway dined here. You should too. You'll want a reservation to come here because it's a popular place. It's also probably the most expensive restaurant in Madrid, so be ready for that. Each person will be charged for bread, even if you don't touch it, so my tip would be to not ask for more (it's definitely not free!). This restaurant is known for their suckling pig (pigs brought from Segovia with delicious, crispy skin). If you're a vegetarian, this spot is not for you. We also got their other famous dish, the egg garlic soup, and it was delicious too. The atmosphere is great, with beautiful Spanish tiles on the walls, low ceilings, and dim light. The service is awesome, which is rare for Europe in general, but also means that there's usually a lot of tourists here. I docked a star for the price because there's delicious food for a third of the price eother places in Madrid, but this historic spot is too iconic not to visit at least once. In Madrid and had to try the legendary Botin. We were seat in the basement near the steps down to the wine cellar ( they have a tour where you get to go down there). You can feel the history in the place. Family of 4 We started with the Salad Botin- it's a salad, nothing too special. It had tomatoes (which apparently were really good as my kids asked for all of it) lettuce, artichokes, asparagus, olives, beets, small chunks of chicken, jamon, an egg. Then came the croquettes which were good. Hot and crispy. Next was Garlic Soup with an egg. It was an interesting dish, definitely not for everyone. My wife and I did enjoy it and finished the whole bowl. Botin clams- probably my favorite of the meal as the sauce was unexpected. Very flavorful and clams not overcooked. Suckling Pig - I think most people will think it's amazing. We all thought it was very good but we are Chinese and thought it tasted just like Chinese roasted pork. You gotta try it if you go. The cheesecake- My whole family (not me, I like cheesecake) said they don't like cheesecake when I mentioned that I saw a lot of reviews about it. Our waiter Alberto (more about him in a second) said it was really good so we ended up getting a slice. My daughter at half of it. My wife even admitted that it was exceptional. Get it, not too cheesy, it's really good. The sangria - my wife got the sangria, it's sangria, it's good. The service was exceptional, Alberto was very personable and we had a friendly banter going. We ordered 3 of the suckling pig (should have only gotten 2, too much food) and he brought it divided into for plates for everyone. He was joking with the kids as well. Highly recommend the tour! That building has seen so much! I won't ruin it for you but there's stories about old blue eyes and his gorgeous dame dancing on a table, Hemmingway escapades, and one of the most famous Spanish artists ever may have worked in the kitchen as a young art student. An example of this is when someone boasts about a wine that's been aging for years in their cellar. I actually enjoyed the little quirks about an older place like the fact that we were seated downstairs and had to walk through the kitchen to get there. The service was pretty good here. We did not have to wait that long for our wine to be brought over and for our food to be ready. The menu is very simple. Their specialties are the roast suckling pig and the roast baby lamb. I came more for the experience than the food and we did not do the tour. I settled on the gazpacho, which is a Spanish style cold tomato soup. It is refreshing on a warm day and I thought this was pretty good. They also have a decent sized wine list, so I got the house red. My friend got the roasted half chicken and she thought the food was pretty good as well. Neither of us was blown away. It was basic Spanish fare with none of the exciting flavor profiles from more modern tapas places. Although I will not be back here since it was lacking bravado I still had a pretty good experience. This is supposedly the oldest restaurant in the world and it was pretty good. They are known for suckling pig which we unfortunately did not get. I got the cod in tomato sauce which came absolutely drenched in sauce and was delicious. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was super yummy. Good portions of food all around. The rest of my family also really like what they ordered. A little expensive but I think it was pretty much worth it. Definitely a bit touristy but it's a cool dining experience with good food. For food we had to try the suckling pig. We also had the gazpacho. GAZPACHO IS AMAZING. So refreshing on a hot day after walking. The pig was so gamey though. I had never had pork that tasted gamey. Maybe it's my American palette.. maybe it truly was gamey.. but I could only eat the skin of which I'm not even typically a fan of.. and I'm Filipino. We love our pork skin. I took two bites, my fiancé took about 6 and we called it quits. *sad face* The service was typical for Spain. Very laxed, if you wanted something like a refill, you would have to physically stop the waiter and ask yourself. The ambiance was crazy different. As another yelper said, winding uneven stairs, it creaks like an old house, seemed as though there were barely any regulations and let this place stay open because it's the oldest restaurant. We were surprised to be seated immediately due to not being able to get a reservation online ahead of time. A unique experience to be at one of the oldest restaurants in the world. The walls are rich with history as well as the food. We have the suckling pig as was recommended to us and it truly melted in your mouth. The night we were there a local mariachi band from the university came to play which made us feel we were having an authentic Spanish experience. If you did not know, Botín is the oldest restaurant in the world. It was opened in 1725 and has only been owned by 2 families and passed down generation to generation. It has survived market crashes, war, civil wars, dictatorships, and more. All these hardship has teach the restaurant to mantain the amazing food and service through the years. I know many people think that paella is the most spanish dish, however, Botin does really bring a bit of alll of spain and serves it in its restaurant. The food is delicious. Starting for the fresh baked bread and the attentiveness of the staff. They do have a set menu that includes wine and three courses but since we had a discount with an app we order of the menu and it was more affordable. If not we would have chosen the Menu. ALL the dishes were tasteful and very authentic. Begining for the appetizers. I personally love the Blood Sausage or Morcilla but this morcilla was beyond delicious. The texture, the seasoning, the ratio of rice, quoting Tina Turner it was just "simply the best". The cochinillo is very well cooked. It could have a nicer side but I was so full and please at the end that it did not really mattered. When it comes to the service, it was very attentive. From the manager being at the door welcoming the guests to the restaurant to the server being attentive and non intrusive. COVID wise there was space between the tables and all windows and doors were open which makes it much better and makes the air circulate and makes you feel safer. There was hand sanitizer in many places and it was a high quality product. I personally saw the staff cleaning all the chairs and handles as there were people leaving tables and using the stairs. I felt safe and was more than happy I do recommend Botin for you to experience the real taste of España when you visit Madrid. My mother and father visited this place over 50 years ago, and when my mom found out we were coming to Madrid she insisted we dine here. This is the oldest (recorded) restaurant in the world, dating back to 1725 and they still use the same wood-fired oven from all those years ago. The servers are all pros here, and our man took exceptional care of us throughout our dining experience. Because we were having heavy steaks and pork, our server helped my wife settle in on a delicious bottle of red wine. Before the meal, I also had a glass of local beer. A basket of fresh, crusty rolls appeared and we got started on the meal. My suckling pig came with several courses. The girls shared a lovely salad and I began to sip on a delicious tomato-based gazpacho soup with croutons and fresh diced veggies added on top, so refreshing! After those courses were completed, out came the main dish(es). My suckling pig was served with the crispiest skin of all time and had a great crunch and flavor. The meat was moist and flavorful from the wood oven, served with small roasted potatoes which was a great compliment to the dish. The girls all loved their meals as well...mushroom covered filet mignons (generously sized) and also a chicken fricassee. To finish, my meal came with a caramel ice cream topped with chocolate sauce and the girls shared a luscious crème brulee. After the meal, we wandered throughout the space, stopping to see the ancient oven and the cavernous dining spaces in the basement. What a special evening, one I will not soon forget. read more

So I will say our experience was a little frustrating. We stopped in, had a great meal and then ordered cheesecake. Our server informed us that they were out of cheesecake which to me was no big deal. Then when we got the check they had charged us for the cheesecake so when I went and asked the manager to remove it, he said they had cheesecake. At this point, I saw cheesecake go out to a guest and I returned my table assuming I was getting cheesecake. at this point, they informed us they were out of cheesecake even though I just seen some go out. Needless to say they adjusted our check and we did not get any cheesecake. The rest was absolutely amazing. We got the suckling, pig and the lamb honestly, I know the place is famous for the pig, but the lamb was the star of the show. The garlic soup was out of this world. My experience here was nothing short of sensational...an evening interlaced with magic, intrigue, and epicurean delights. Let's begin with the entrance. The grand entrance that transports you to another century...the 18th century to be exact. When I entered, I immediately felt hundreds of years of history emanating from the walls. As a solo diner, perhaps they wanted to reward my intrepid behavior by seating me in the basement. You see, the basement here requires you to hunch down and descend down a set of ancient creaking stairs. At the bottom, you find yourself in a dome shaped, brick walled room well suited to men wearing britches and powdered wigs. I felt at home. I was placed at a lovely table next to the wine cellar - a place only the most adventurous of culinary devotees dare enter. Alas, I was finally seated at my table. I ordered the melon and ham, a bread loaf with butter (the butter is integral to the experience), and clams to top it all off. The ham and melon portion was large - something I was very grateful for as a hungry traveler. The taste was spot on. The clams were bathed in a delightful and rich sauce. I almost drank the broth on its own, but opted for dipping the bread in. That alone was deserving of a chef's kiss! Then, something truly magical happened. The singing men dressed in antiquated clothing (fondly referred to as "tunas", descend those ancient creaking stairs, equipped with guitars in hand and vibrato in their voices. They began serenading the dining room in a variety of Spanish songs. I laughed, I gazed in awe. I smiled. I may have cried a bit too. Simply, delightful. The manager Antonio was equally delightful. He showed us around the restaurant, providing interesting stories and history lessons for every room, and every artifact in sight. What a treat. Perhaps he's the real treasure of the restaurant?
