Unique would be an understatement. We went here for our wedding anniversary and had lunch in the basement. This is truly an experience you won't find anywhere else. Everything about the experience was top notch. We enjoyed both the classic old world charm and the service we received. The Mr. and I ordered the suckling pig and the suckling lamb. Each were served with a simple boiled potato. We traded bites and both were delicious. We also ordered a pitcher of sangria. We'd drank a lot of sangria over the course of our almost three weeks in Spain. This was some of the best sangria we'd had on our trip. Finally, we ended our meal with a slice of cheesecake. O M Gee. This place is great! It is not every day that one gets to dine at the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the world. That and the many pictures of a roasted suckling pig would lead many to potentially believe this is a tourist trap... it is not. This place lives up to its hype. We were a party of 8 and ordered a whole suckling pig, presented to us at the table in all of its glory. It was wonderful. Tender juicy meat covered by crackling skin with just a hint of salt and pepper. No other seasoning is needed (or wanted) as the sweetness of the meat shines through in every bite. It is roasted just right to get that crackling consistency in every bite of the skin but leaving the meat succulent. It is the real deal and the star of the show. Come here for the suckling pig. The oldest restaurant in the World requires a visit while in Madrid. Located at the famous Arcos de Cuchilleros street near famous Plaza Mayor. The restaurant is famous for its Roasted Pig and Lamb meats. The building dates from the 18th Century. The kitchen can be seen from the first floor. We were seated across from the kitchen. Appetizers: Croquetas. A nice Bread Basket was placed on our table. A carafe of Sangria to sip. We ordered Cochinillo Asado and Camarones al Ajillo. The Cochinillo comes with Roasted Potatoes. The Cochinillo is delicate in taste not too much seasoning, mostly natural flavor with its crunchy skin. It's not cut with a knife but a Plate or a Spoon. It's that tender. The Potatoes were delicious. Gambas o Camarones on a rich garlic olive oil sauce. That is where the bread comes into play. To soak the sauce. Natilla Catalana capped off the meal. Memorable We are visiting Madrid from the US and had made reservations to this historic restaurant a month ago. It was a cool and beautiful evening as we waited outside until the restaurant opened at 8:00, the time of our reservation. They have a few different dining rooms, we were seated in one that was a nice open area with good lighting, servers in white jackets adding to the ambiance. We loved our server, cracking his professional veneer with our questions and my wife's attempt at speaking Spanish. We had what will turn out to be our best dining experience in Madrid. Known for their Suckling Pig, that's what we both ordered. With its crackling skin and very tender meat, it was a meal from a bygone time. It came with a couple of boiled potatoes. Friend got a reservation here and honestly, glad he pushed us to go because I went with very low expectations. Friend got a reservation, downstairs of course, for a late dinner. It was a group of four of us and it was the almost perfect size; I actually think it would have been better as a pair as this place is tiny! Yes, it's the oldest running restaurant in the world. Yes, you will have a ton of people taking photos of the facade while they continue along their walking tour. Yes, you will have a live band come through and sing/play for tip money. It's a part of the experience right? Everyone talks about the suckling pig and honestly, I felt like I needed something lighter as we were dining quite late. Let's start with the issue of people writing reviews without any knowledge of food and even less of the food from a specific country. El Botin might have the title of the "oldest continuously operating restaurant"; but that title does not guarantee anything. As it is the case of "el sobrino de Botin". The building is old as expected but there is no charm or even a feeling of an old structure. Its simply a bunch of rooms with tables stacked really close to each other. The service is boring and in no way takes advantage of its title. There are no historical elements other than the basement with an iron gate and you can pick at some old wine making equipment. Near the entrance there is a tiny door before the staircase that if you pick you can see where the little pigs are roasted. That, its pretty cool. We ordered an abundance of food for 4 people: roasted artichokes, red peppers with tuna, el Botin salad, roasted lamb, roasted pig, Baked fish, etc. To give a fair review to a restaurant a variety of dishes needs to be ordered, and if they have a specialty make sure you order that. As another reviewer pointed out the only thing that was sort of good was the Roasted lamb. All the other things we ordered were disappointing to say the least. The Roasted Pig was tasteless. There are many restaurants around the world that have great roasted pig. I particularly think that the best is in Argentina, Uruguay and Serbia. Think this Yelp list has the name wrong as it's actually called "El Sobrino de Botín" located in Madrid, Spain is the oldest restaurant in Europe dating back to 1795. When I last visited Madrid we had a special occasion to celebrate and when we asked hotel concierge they suggested el sobrino de botín as a very good restaurant and could be a memorable place to celebrate the occasion while in Madrid, Spain due to it's rich history and the ideal place to go. Being the weekend the concierge offered to call and make reservations since this place is always full and over booked on weekends. I heard them explain occasion and sure enough we had reservations for dinner at 8:00pm. We arrived at restaurant and it was packed, when we checked in with hostess they acknowledged our reservation and our special occasion and processed to give us a tour or restaurant including kitchen and proceeded to seat us in a more private area which was nice to be away from large crowd. Waiter was very friendly and helpful in our wine and dinner selection. Decoration was wood and classic as we could have imagined in old Madrid. Food and service was excellent and overall this place was a great selection and was very grateful for concierge recommendation. We got the suckling pig since that's what it's known for. This was the first place we visited in Madrid and the most expensive. Our expectations were way toooo high. The suckling pig tasted like pig boiled in water. No salt, no seasoning, nothing. There was hardly any meat, most of it was fat. It comes with two potatoes. I was very disappointed in this dish. We were given a time slot of 10:30 pm. Who eats dinner at 10:30 pm? We had to beg off as we were set on ordering the suckling pig. So we made a reservation for lunch (1 pm) on our last day in Madrid. There were 8 of us and we ordered the roasted whole suckling pig served on a humongous platter with roasted potatoes that is good for 6 people but asked the server to plate for 8 (25.40 euros x 6). We also ordered the tripe (callos Madrid style) and sautéed mushrooms with Iberian ham, bread basket and a bottle of their house red wine. We were worried the suckling pig wasn't going to be enough for 8 people, our trepidation was for nothing. There was more than enough, even had leftovers. The roasted suckling pig was good. Personally I still prefer the lechon, but that's just me. The 10% VAT was justified. It felt like we had our own wait staff. Honestly the food was great, as you can tell the cooks take pride is their cooking skills and oven. However the restaurant lacked customer service. I tell you we had two people wait on us. We arrived at 1:04 pm and because we're peasants - we did not know to make reservation. Which meat following the guy through the kitchen to a small dining table off the kitchen. There were 5 tables set up which only 5 parties regardless of size are seated (unlike restaurants in Italy where they shove as much people on one table as possible). You are greeted and seated by the rooms server, and given menus instantly. We ordered: Salad Botín, croquettes, and their specialty the roasted suckling pig with a 1/2 liter of Sangria. Salad Botín: different, but all fresh and good Croquettes: very good and flavorful. I just wish it was piping hot Suckling pig: skins perfectly crispy but not bubbled and a good portion of meat on each piece Sangria: arrives in a cute personalized pitcher. Not too sweet but very Tasty They do change a 10% service fee, and to justify it you have a gentleman watch you eat (lol) but he also serves the dishes into plates and refills your drinks promptly. This place is the oldest restaurant still in existence and it's a very charming place to visit.... That said.. we got a table outside immediately no wait around 8:30PM. Inside was packed! Our waiter was an older gentleman career type waiter with rush you out attitude not friendly no smile no laugh nothing.. The three of us only ordered hors d'oeuvre's croquette, mushroom and some tuna dish that were just ok nothing special and croquette should be served steaming hot in my opinion. I think if waiter was a bit more friendly and at least tried to entertain us i think we would of ordered entrees but he just was too dead. Glass of wine was good. Fantastic roasted pork- I absolutely agree. The hype of this place is understated if you're a local but overstated if you're a YouTube foodie. Yes it is delicious and worth the visit but I don't see myself coming here as a regular. I think the reason is I'm not craving roasted pork every day. What was most interesting was the restaurant location and building itself. Rich with history and tales of famous patrons and the fact that it's the oldest in Madrid going back to the medieval is fascinating. This restaurant has bragging rights to being the oldest restaurant in the world (recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records). It first opened in 1725 and it was famously mentioned by Hemingway. It's a nice cozy restaurant right by the Plaza Mayor. Reservations are highly recommended. Unfortunately, as far as I'm concerned, this is where their bragging rights end. The service was mediocre at best. The table next to us got way more attention because the restaurant's manager was attending to guests so their service was top notch compared to what we received. Not saying it was bad but we had to keep asking to refills. Food was sub-standard. The calamares were tough so it was hardly eaten (the waiter was nice enough to remove this item from our bill). Their famous suckling pig lacked flavor. The clams botín and the garlic mushrooms on the other hand were delicious. It is worth the experience of eating at the oldest restaurant in the world. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 is because me, my dad, and my brother are all over 6'2 and the tables are all very close to each other. The waiters or leaving customers would bump into us just to get past. The food was amazing, we had the pig, the lamb, and the fillet mignon Bootín. They were all awesome and you can not beat the prices. Their suckling pig was insanely amazing! It was cooked in the oven that has been working since 1725. The skin was incredibly thin and crispy, like eating chips; inside meat was tender and juicy, I didn't add any salt. Even the potatoes were well cooked. They weren't the best I have had, but defintely good. The bread was excellent, little artisan loaves. A little dry, so butter or olive oil were excellent additions. The steak, awesome! Cooked to perfection. The suckling pig, their specialty, was huge disappointment. The skin was crispy and delicious, but the actual meat lacked flavor. The same could be said for the lamb (we did a family style tasting menu amongst my buddies). Finally the dessert, we had the chocolate cake, the Botín cream cake, and an assortment of ice cream & sorbet. It was an excellent ending! Oh the wine, who can forget the wine. Their house red is $19/ bottle and absolutely a steal! Would I go back? If I have a person new to Madrid, absolutely! If I'm back on my own, I'll probably explore some of Madrid's other excellent culinary options. You find yourself into a nice and cozy restaurant, with have a good server that gives good recommendations. Prop Tip every item in the menu that has a star is the specialty. To started with my appetizer I had the croquettes with were crispy and cheesy delicious a good option to share with friends. For my main course, I had one the cochinillo asado( roast pig), I have to say this is one best roast pig I had on a fancy restaurant very juicy, crispy very tender, good taste and the portion was big. I feel the need to patronize my hometown's beloved Casa Botín. It is known worldwide for being the most ancient restaurant ever, mentioned in 15th century ( if not earlier) literary works. It specializes in cochinillo (oven roasted piglet) and Cordero lechal (oven roasted lamb) and boasts to have had their centuries-old fire lit in their brick oven that working non-stop since the day it was founded back in ancient times. Whether that is True or partly true, one thing is certain: the flavor and crispness that the oven infuses into the meats are a culinary experience that one will hardly forget. It will make their trip to Madrid unforgettable and will Go down in the family history as part of the travel bucket list. Now, having said that- I have observed that Botin's cuisine's quality has been surpassed by nearby restaurants. The last time I went- summer of 2024- I saw that the portions have been reduced a tad bit and I felt the cooking had been either rushed or too early ready-made. We went at lunchtime and there were many , many tables being served , a lot of which were parties of 8 and above. My cousin and I were sat so close to the next table that our elbows almost touched! The servers were fantastic and kept their politeness and service A1 despite the busiest lunch time and the amount of orders coming and going. But I would have appreciated juicier and freshly- baked portions of meat. Maybe I was just overwhelmed w the busyness of it all. I still like Casa Botín though. Makes me feel at home .
