    My banh mi!
    Jess W.

How is it possible with inflation, the cost of living, and housing prices that you can still find a sandwich in the GTA for less than $5? @ Bot Chien Saigon, the banh mi here is either $4 for the signature of $4.50 for the rest. There is no tax added to the sandwich, so it really is under five bucks! I would give this place a higher rating, but I couldn't because of sanitary reasons. I saw the lady making the banh mi with gloves on and then collecting money and change WITH THOSE SAME GLOVES. I did not feel comfortable that she was stuffing my banh mi with the same gloves that she touched money. Maybe this is okay in Vietnam, but not in here in Canada with our health code. Also, the inside of the place was a bit warm, but I was surprised that the sandwich fillings was really cold--at least the food is kept in the right temperature. Overall... there are other banh mi places in the plaza and I'll probably check those ones out before coming back here. Sanitation is very important and I hope the owners would take this review seriously.

I was walking around the Sino Mall and my sweetie wanted to look inside this Chinese Vietnamese restaurant. Staff make and package sandwiches and other food treats onsite. The sandwiches menu was in Vietnamese so staff had to explain what the choices were. We selected the house special 12-inch sub for $3.50 which proved to be very tasty. The other two packaged items for $7.00 each were also good. Cash Only, was one of a few English signs.

And what's that sweetness in the rice? The small round potatoes were cooked well with a crispyish outside and warm inside. I also got some fava beans, which I seemingly have never had before but will again, and it had some meat with it and it was tangy and just great tasting.

I figured I'd keep it simple, so I went with the Classic Burger ("Two beef patties cooked-to-order, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, and of course, ketchup and mustard"). It was ready about ten minutes later and it's...fine. The various components are decent enough, although the tomato was far from ripe, but the burger itself was hardly cooked with care. It didn't really have a beefy flavor and it was totally lacking in texture. And with nothing really to cut through the fat, the whole thing ate really, really heavy. The whole thing was just so middle of the road. Honestly I would've rather been eating a Whopper. (At least that burger has that flame-grilled flavor going for it.) I doubt I'd order from Wayback again, although it's certainly possible they were just having an off night.

The broth was so flavourful, lots of lemongrass and lime flavour. It was loaded with beef, sausage slices, and pork blood so this was very worth it! 10/10! Service was typical of an Asian restaurant but must comment that the decor inside the restaurant is very beautiful. Lots of greenery and bamboo decorations which made the ambience very enjoyable for dining. Don't be fooled by the industrial appearance of the outside!

The menu unfurls with impressive breadth, moving well beyond expected pho into simmered specialties that reward the adventurous diner. Service throughout was attentive and unhurried, the sort of hospitality that turns newcomers into regulars. What lingers most is the room itself. Disco lighting fixtures and a tucked away stage lend the space an unexpected theatricality, as though it were built for celebration rather than mere sustenance. Despite the family's expansion into a sleeker downtown outpost, this original location retains a lived in charm no polished interior could replicate. The broth carries real depth and fragrance, the noodles handled with care, and the accompanying plates, from crisp spring rolls to grilled specialties, arrive with the consistency that keeps a neighborhood loyal for decades. If there is a critique to offer, it is only that the restaurant's understated exterior undersells the warmth and quality found within. This is Vietnamese cooking presented without pretense: generous, comforting, and utterly sincere. Pho Ngoc Yen earns its reputation through steady, quiet excellence, and it remains a destination worth returning to again and again.
